Question about fork brace materials (steel vs aluminum)
Hello all,
I'm making a custom fork brace for a gs500. The default one is a pretty flimsy piece of sheet metal, I figured this would be a good quick project to add to my portfolio while I have access to the schools CNC machines.
Most aftermarket braces are aluminum. My understanding of materials is that aluminum turns brittle over time/moisture, and is more likely to snap than to flex.
Steel is obviously heavier, but is stronger, would bend rather than tear, and would provide the same rigidity I want (going for a 1mm thick to 5mm thick brace is probably more than enough strength regardless of material.
The goal is to have better handling, reduce chances of wobble at speeds, in general just stiffer front forks. Is there something I'm missing for why everyone prefers aluminum over steel for this application? Is it just material costs or is there some performance benefits for aluminum I'm ignorant of?
I'd love to hear the experience of anyone with more experience fabricating custom bike parts!
