Wanted to show yall my girl Nightmare.

She certainly does look like a nightmare, since she is missing her upper lip (it’s hard to see since she is darker).

I don’t know how she lost it, but I assume it’s a defect she was born with and I never realized it right away (since she is very dark).

Which is also a reminder to be careful when buying fish online because you can’t see them in person and you never really know what you get.

She’s a healthy, spicy girl and eats just fine despite her differences.

I got my sweeet lil Godfrey for free cuz the people at Petco didn’t think he would make it (my plants look like junk I know, hopefully I’m bringing them back but if they don’t bounce back I’m getting new ones)

Discussion So your worst nightmare, jumping Bettas.

So last night I woke up to pee, as you do, around 4am. When I put my feet on the rug there was a long black shape, which I thought was a slight g because they often invade our house in damage weather. But my guts said, check it out, and my iPhone light showed me it was a fairly dried out Betta. I immediately scooped him up and put him in the nearest tank - he was sticky with crunchy fin edges - then I realised I’d put him in another male’s tank, so the poor guy had to be netted and moved to safety. I didn’t have much hope as he was sticky and warm to the touch ( I live on the Mediterranean so it’s still warm here) but this morning he was looking almost his old self again. I don’t know if he’ll be OK but at least he has a chance.

So if you find a dry and sticky Betta on your floor, always give him a chance and put him back in his tank!

Discussion The hardest part of fish keeping…

Hitting the place order button to buy the product that will inevitably end your pet’s life is heartbreaking but opening the package and holding it in your hand as you look them in the eyes is unbearable. In my heart I know that his quality of life is shitty. He doesn’t swim hardly at all all he does is eat and poop. And even eating has become a struggle as I basically have to hold a pipette right in front of his lips and watch as he consumes 30% of the brine shrimp that float in front of him. He lays on his side all day everyday. I know in my heart I tried everything (feeding kanaplex, doing Epsom salt baths, Maracyn 2, and 4 days of Jessie’s method) but It’s still so heartbreaking to let them go. It feels like I failed him :(

Am I the only one who feels like cleaning the glass would be a betrayal of aquariums balance? Besides, I suspect that having the glass be slightly less than perfectly clear might actually help reduce stress for the fish. Maybe

Picture (almost) one year together!!

I got him last November so it's almost been one whole year with this guy! It's been smooth sailing so far, and I'm hoping for many more years, but I've heard that betta fish don't live as long as they used to due to over/poor breeding, so I'm not sure what to expect? What tends to be the average life expectancy these days?

Please ignore my neglected helanthium. It turns out plant maintenance is NOT my passion (the fish and shrimp love it though).

I adopted him from a friend who raised him as a fry for the first year and a quarter but due to living arrangements had to be rid of the tank so I took him in and hes been here the past near 6 months and my friend said not once did he make a nest until now.

Discussion Beware of Zoo Med Betta flow filter

Hey guys. I am a new Betta dad. Have my first female and she is doing great. Although I recently had a male set up and was using a Zoo Med Betta Flow filter. Me being an idiot assumed since it’s marketed towards Betta Fish it would be gentle, but I was wrong. It’s basically a rebranded version of their turtle filter. I came home today to feed him and he was stuck under the big ass filter. He died. I can’t tell if the current sucked him down there or if he squeezed himself behind it. Either way I am devastated. Avoid this filter either way, I should have swapped it sooner so it’s my fault.

Help Is this tank big enough for a long fin betta temporarily?

Post image
4 Upvotes

I’m Looking to jailbreak a betta from my local fish store but unsure if I should wait for my larger tank to arrive before doing so in order to not cause unnecessary stress. Tank was originally planned to be only snails and neo shrimp but geez the sad bettas in my local make be depressed. This is 16L, planning to get 30L square. (Have done much much research on the do’s and don’ts of bettas, mainly just trying to see if this is okay as a temporary tank?)

Help Is this fin rot or something else?

Thumbnail

Hi everyone! I'm a first-time fishkeeper and would really appreciate some advice about my betta's fins.

I've had him for almost 3 weeks now, and I've noticed these tiny transparent, pinhole-like spots on his tail. They're not really holes, more like little areas where the fin membrane looks see-through.

He actually already had some of these spots at the pet shop, but they weren't very noticeable under the store lighting. I noticed them properly once I brought him home. Since then, I feel like there might be more of them, although the edges of his fins don't seem to be getting noticeably worse.

Some background:

- He's currently housed alone in a 30L planted aquarium (30 × 30 × 35 cm), with a filter and heater.

- The tank was cycled before I introduced him, and ammonia and nitrite were both at 0 ppm.

- Idid have some nitrite spikes about a week ago, which I addressed with daily water changes (sometimes twice a day, depending on the readings) and Seachem Prime.

- I've checked the decorations and haven't found anything sharp that could tear his fins.

- The filter flow seems gentle and doesn't appear to bother him.

- He's otherwise behaving completely normally, swimming around, exploring, and eating well.

I've added catappa leaves and ordered Seachem StressGuard, which I'm currently waiting for.

I know my current aquarium is a little on the taller side, so I've also recently bought a second aquarium that's only 25 cm tall. I'm considering moving him there once it's fully cycled, as I figured a shallower tank might be more comfortable for him with his long fins. I'm not planning to rush the move, though.

I've also been considering salt baths using pure, additive-free salt since I don't have access to aquarium salt, but I haven't tried anything yet because I'm unsure whether it would actually help or just cause unnecessary stress.

I'm mainly wondering whether these transparent spots could be early fin rot, physical damage, or something else. What confuses me is that the outer edges of his fins seem relatively stable, but the transparent areas within the fin appear to be increasing.

I’d really appreciate any advice or experiences with something similar. Thank you! 🫶
