I want to start a shrimp tank but I have no idea where to begin

I have no experience with keeping shrimp or any fish for that matter but I am looking for a new hobby and shrimp keeping has intrigued me. Is there a step by step how to because I have no clue on where to begin. I've looked at the side bar but still I have no idea.

Mod Poll: Should We Ban Ai Use Altogether On This Sub.

It seems a lot of people, possibly the majority, want to see an absolute ban of Ai on this sub, whether in post or comment. So, we wanted to let the community decide. Thanks for your input! - Shrimptank Mod Team

Why did I come home with another tank today? I already bought a second one for the 'shrimp overflow'... but that has turned into is own thing with just red shrimp... and that one is overrun with snails too.. and my mystery snails are ginormous in there, plus it needs a rescape already...wtf is happening?!

Discussion I haven’t done a water change since May

Post image
13 Upvotes

I have my shrimp in a heavily planted aquarium, and I haven’t done any water changes since I got them in May. Just top offs with treated distilled water and fertilizer (once in a while a potassium dose) and adding an almond leaf once the last one is gone.

They have been constantly berried and quite a few of the shrimplets survive. Now I have over 50 when I started with around 20.

I don’t feed them too often, maybe 2 times a week since they have plenty of biofilm in the tank.

They seem to be thriving, but should I do a water change? Since they haven’t had one before, I’m worried about shocking them with new tap water (treated ofc)

How often do you guys do water changes for your shrimp?

I have 6 neo shrimps in this pot currently and the microfauna is getting out of control .
Earlier I had 2 guppies in this pot too and I guess that was the reason microfauna didn’t exist back then.
It’s been 2 weeks since I moved my guppies due to tank size and as I heard shrimps won’t mate in a tank with a predator.
One of my cherry shrimp is berried now , I don’t wanna bring back guppies . How do I control this situation?

Help: Algae & Pests NEED PLANARIA URGENTLY (Dugesia tigrina)

Hey! I am participating in an experimental design competition, and need to source some planarian worms, specifically Dugesia tigrina, within vancouver in the next few days. If anyone knows anyone with planaria within vancouver canada, please let us know, its urgent and very cool stuff we're doing...🙏

was told to post here since they can be a common aquarium pest

(sorry if it’s too off topic but we are desperate, bless up shrimp community )

Discussion What snails does everyone recommend for their shrimp tank?

Post image
14 Upvotes

I have a 10 gallon Neocaridina shrimp tank that’s heavily planted and has 9 shrimp (hopefully more once I figure out getting them to breed) and a decent amount of bladder snails. I want to get a snail buddy or buddies to benefit the tank and help keep beneficial bacteria alive. I’ve been debating getting Malaysian Trumpet Snails to help clean my dirty substrate but I’ve also been told to absolutely avoid them. Then I was thinking of getting a mystery snail cause they’re good for shrimp tanks but I’ve learned they can eat live shrimp and destroy tanks so now I’m torn. Wondering what everyone has in their tank and recommends, or any snails they have and wish they didn’t get? Thanks in advance!

I have a 5 gallon planted Caridina Tank, I have barely checked this tank in weeks. About 2 month ago I noticed that 2 of my shrimps had eggs, this was when I was over feeding them in hopes of getting shrimplets but eventually the eggs disappeared without a trace of shrimplets, I won’t lie I was quite disappointed and stopped paying as much attention as I was previously. Today when I was out buying cat food I noticed a good deal for Neon Tetras and although the recommended tank size is 10-20 gallons, my tank is about 16 inches wide than it is tall and my parameters are extremely stable for it’s size. Seeing as they only grow to 1.5 inches, I figured what’s the risk, if any problems I have a 55 gallon tank on standby that I bought months ago for an amazing deal (owner thought it was 40 gallons, but still sold it for the listed price.) I haven’t bothered using it since my tanks ecosystem is not that large (13 shrimps and way too many horn snails), upon finishing drip acclimating and checking on my tetras though I noticed 3 baby shrimplets! Which was quite surprising considering my tanks ecosystem has been evaporating to a point of being about 3 gallons at this point. I won’t lie I am extremely excited, ignoring the small tank size (again can’t stress enough I constantly read 0 ammonia even with evaporation so parameters are not a concern) I love that my Caridina tank is so stable that I can go months without interference. Now that I am aware of the shrimplets and with the addition of the 4 tetras (will eventually acquire more) I think it’s time to begin preparations for a sizeable upgrade.

I suspect this is a result of a molt, as she's looking particularly radiant this morning, but this shrimp had so many eggs yesterday, and today she just seems to have the 3 - is this something to be worried about? She's our first berried female and my daughter's absolute favourite (it took the poor guy at the store a LONG time to catch this particular shrimp, now named Dot)

Wasn't sure what flair to use. This guy started out black and blue, then started developing this coppery color that's spreading. I couldn't find anything that looked like this online.

Ammonia .25ppm, nitrites 0ppm, pH 7.0, temperature ~70F

Discussion Do amano shrimp eat black beard algae?

I've been told many times that they don't but I added about 10 for algae control in my 40 gallon breeder and as you can see they have eaten back the algae down to the surface. This driftwood was absolutely covered thick about 3 weeks ago. They may not get the style points that cherry shrimp get but I'm not sure there is a better cleanup crew.
