Discussion Best Guitar playing?

• Upvotes

For me its Something (it's my favourite Beatles song and the guitar solo and smooth guitar is a highlight), Taxman (the solo is electrifying) and Get Back (Lennon playing a rare lead and absolutely killing it).

Opinion it’s crazy how ahead of the times the last 4 songs are to varying extents on Sgt Peppers

• Upvotes

like the outro to lovely rita, with the piano’s & no real vocals sounds so fresh. you could play just that & say it came from any decade since & id believe you. it especially sounds like something some alt rappers would be rapping on in the 90s. like de la or beastie boys lol.

then good morning good morning the whole song to me feels so ironic & almost shit post-y that again i could believe it came out anytime. if it came out this year id imagine it’d just be a semi retro throwback ironic song you know.

then the drum solo at the beginning of sgt peppers reprise sounds so fresh. i can so hear it being sampled and looped on anyone’s track from rakim to wu tang to doom to kendrick. its some of my favourite drumming in their discography. so fresh so clean. the rest of it isn’t as modern but their drums woo.

& then what more do i need to say about a day in the life? some of the best production in the discography. i think its the best sounding non abbey road song in their discography. beautiful, ethereal, chaotic. so ahead of the times there are bands that’d struggle to make something sound this good nowadays. thank god for george martin.

Question Question about the "catchiness test" thing

I have seen this claim about the "catchiness test" in Beatles's songwriting method for many times. Basically if they remember the song, they would record it, if they didn't, they wouldn't because it was not good enough to record.

But geniunely I have never seen Beatles biographical authors or Beatles themselves talk about it. Is this story legitimate?

Discussion Ringo is underrated because people keep confusing flashy drumming with good drumming

I honestly think Ringo gets underestimated because people judge drummers by how technically impressive their parts sound instead of how well they serve the music.

His drumming rarely feels like he's trying to steal attention from the song. He finds the groove, supports the melody, and adds little rhythmic details that make the recordings feel distinctive. That kind of restraint is a skill in itself, and it's harder to appreciate when you're only looking for complicated fills or flashy solos.

I also think his personality is a huge part of why the Beatles worked so well as a group. You can argue about who was the most technically gifted musician, but the band wasn't successful because all four members were trying to outshine one another on every track.

Ringo didn't need to be the most technically impressive drummer in the world to be the right drummer for the Beatles. His feel, timing, and musical instincts were exactly what those songs needed.

People can have their favorite Beatle, but dismissing Ringo as the least important member seriously underestimates what he brought to the band.

Question Does anyone know if this is George?

Post image
134 Upvotes

With his head in Jane’s lap (I think that’s where it is? It’s pretty crowded so it’s hard to tell.) I’ve always thought this picture was adorable (they all look so happy!) and I’m pretty sure that’s George, but I’m not positive. Does anyone have any information on the picture or anything? I guess an added bonus to this post is even if no one knows I still get to share one of my favorite photos of them in India, lol. Sorry if this is dumb, but not being 100% sure has been nagging at me. (Side note: posted this like a minute ago but the picture was being weird so I deleted. Hopefully it works this time.)

Opinion George Harrison’s songwriting gets better the more you listen to it

I feel like George’s songs are the kind that hit differently the more time you spend with them. The Beatles had so many iconic Lennon-McCartney tracks that it’s easy to overlook just how much George brought to the band.

Songs like “Something,” “While My Guitar Gently Weeps,” and “Here Comes the Sun” are obvious classics, but even his lesser-known songs have something special about them. There’s a warmth and honesty in his songwriting that makes them feel timeless.

And then you get into his solo work, and there’s a whole other side of him to discover.

Discussion Is this the most under appreciated Beatles album-If not what is for you?

Post image
45 Upvotes

It’s obviously hard to say any Beatles album is “under-appreciated” as they’ve been listened to and dissected for more than 6 decades. However if there was an album from them I say doesn’t get as much recognition as it should- it’s A hard days night. Obviously their first album written solely by the band, for me this album is ridiculously fun and enjoyable from back to front. More upbeat songs like I should’ve known better and I’m happy just to dance pair so well with the more slow songs such as and I love her, as-well as I’ll be back and if I fell. For you personally what album do you think doesn’t get enough recognition in their catalogue, as I’d put this quite comfortably in their top 5

Discussion Something I’ve noticed in Beatles albums

Post image
16 Upvotes

I’ve noticed in a lot of Beatles albums, where one of them may generally perform better on the album than the other 3, one of those other 3 will have a stand out song on the album.

To try and explain my point, take a look at Abbey Road. I don’t think it’s a very controversial take that generally Paul or George performs the best on that album, the whole medley makes the album which was Paul’s idea and George’s best work with the group is on that album, however John’s songs stand out among the rest. While what I said is still true, you could just as easily argue that Come Together, I Want You or even Because are the best songs on that album.

It’s the same with Sgt Pepper’s, the whole album is Paul’s first masterpiece but in my opinion Lucy In The Sky and specifically John’s parts in A Day In The Life are the standouts, or on the white album where Paul and John are more or less equal yet out of George’s songs two of them (Piggies and Savoy Truffle) are arguably the more forgettable songs on the album, While My Guitar Gently Weeps could easily be argued is the best song on that album. Even some of their earlier albums like A Hard Day’s Night or Help! where John almost definitely has the general better songs, most people will come away remembering And I Love Her or Yesterday, both Paul songs.

I think on the albums I haven’t mentioned all the main songwriters (sorry Ringo) perform at a similar level to each other so it’s not really worth mentioning, but if anyone has any other examples I’d like to hear

Opinion I slept on George Harrison's songs for way too long

For the longest time, when I listened to the Beatles, I mostly paid attention to John and Paul. George's songs were just kind of there for me.

Then I started listening to All Things Must Pass and went back to his Beatles songs, and honestly, I don't know what took me so long.

Something and While My Guitar Gently Weeps are obviously great, but even songs like Long, Long, Long have really grown on me.

It's funny how you can listen to the same band for years and suddenly realize you've been overlooking a whole part of what made them special.

Anyone else have a similar experience with George's songwriting?
