Community Identifying a record or seeing how much it's worth? Use DISCOGS.COM

https://www.discogs.com/

Some people have asked for a post like this to be stickied in the sub because we constantly get people asking what a record is worth or what version they have.

You need to match the matrix information. Which is the part of the record between the music/grooves and the label. There will be etched and/or stamped letters, symbols and numbers. You can just do a search for the artist and album name with the matrix info typed in. After searching, it should pull up all albums that match. If there’s more than one, you will have to figure out which it is by checking under the barcode and other identifiers section.

You also may need to look at info on the vinyl label and the sleeve. There will sometimes be additional info under the notes section.

Please check out r/discogs if you need more help searching but READ THEIR RULES.

Question Does anyone know if this is George?

Post image
56 Upvotes

With his head in Jane’s lap (I think that’s where it is? It’s pretty crowded so it’s hard to tell.) I’ve always thought this picture was adorable (they all look so happy!) and I’m pretty sure that’s George, but I’m not positive. Does anyone have any information on the picture or anything? I guess an added bonus to this post is even if no one knows I still get to share one of my favorite photos of them in India, lol. Sorry if this is dumb, but not being 100% sure has been nagging at me. (Side note: posted this like a minute ago but the picture was being weird so I deleted. Hopefully it works this time.)

Discussion LOVE version of I Am The Walrus is the absolute best

Post image

The 2023 mix lacks crucial parts of the song (sound effects, orchestral outro), and the 2009 remaster comes with weird panning and the instruments are too quiet. The LOVE mix fixes all of these problems, it only has a 2 second different intro/outro. Anyone who still hasn't listened to this is truly missing out

Discussion Is this the most under appreciated Beatles album-If not what is for you?

It’s obviously hard to say any Beatles album is “under-appreciated” as they’ve been listened to and dissected for more than 6 decades. However if there was an album from them I say doesn’t get as much recognition as it should- it’s A hard days night. Obviously their first album written solely by the band, for me this album is ridiculously fun and enjoyable from back to front. More upbeat songs like I should’ve known better and I’m happy just to dance pair so well with the more slow songs such as and I love her, as-well as I’ll be back and if I fell. For you personally what album do you think doesn’t get enough recognition in their catalogue, as I’d put this quite comfortably in their top 5

Opinion I slept on George Harrison's songs for way too long

For the longest time, when I listened to the Beatles, I mostly paid attention to John and Paul. George's songs were just kind of there for me.

Then I started listening to All Things Must Pass and went back to his Beatles songs, and honestly, I don't know what took me so long.

Something and While My Guitar Gently Weeps are obviously great, but even songs like Long, Long, Long have really grown on me.

It's funny how you can listen to the same band for years and suddenly realize you've been overlooking a whole part of what made them special.

Anyone else have a similar experience with George's songwriting?

Opinion George Harrison’s songwriting gets better the more you listen to it

I feel like George’s songs are the kind that hit differently the more time you spend with them. The Beatles had so many iconic Lennon-McCartney tracks that it’s easy to overlook just how much George brought to the band.

Songs like “Something,” “While My Guitar Gently Weeps,” and “Here Comes the Sun” are obvious classics, but even his lesser-known songs have something special about them. There’s a warmth and honesty in his songwriting that makes them feel timeless.

And then you get into his solo work, and there’s a whole other side of him to discover.

Other Joe Satriani Says George Is The Most Underrated Guitarist Of All Time

I first read this quote from Joe Satriani a few years ago - he is animated that George is the most underrated guitarist of all time, and goes on to extol George's musical virtues.

Discussion Something I’ve noticed in Beatles albums

Post image
11 Upvotes

I’ve noticed in a lot of Beatles albums, where one of them may generally perform better on the album than the other 3, one of those other 3 will have a stand out song on the album.

To try and explain my point, take a look at Abbey Road. I don’t think it’s a very controversial take that generally Paul or George performs the best on that album, the whole medley makes the album which was Paul’s idea and George’s best work with the group is on that album, however John’s songs stand out among the rest. While what I said is still true, you could just as easily argue that Come Together, I Want You or even Because are the best songs on that album.

It’s the same with Sgt Pepper’s, the whole album is Paul’s first masterpiece but in my opinion Lucy In The Sky and specifically John’s parts in A Day In The Life are the standouts, or on the white album where Paul and John are more or less equal yet out of George’s songs two of them (Piggies and Savoy Truffle) are arguably the more forgettable songs on the album, While My Guitar Gently Weeps could easily be argued is the best song on that album. Even some of their earlier albums like A Hard Day’s Night or Help! where John almost definitely has the general better songs, most people will come away remembering And I Love Her or Yesterday, both Paul songs.

I think on the albums I haven’t mentioned all the main songwriters (sorry Ringo) perform at a similar level to each other so it’s not really worth mentioning, but if anyone has any other examples I’d like to hear

Question Was there any sort of reaction from Beatles fans when Meet the Residents came out in 1974, and if so, what was it?

A few years ago, I listened to the album Meet the Residents. The album cover is essentially a cartoonish defacement of the Meet the Beatles! album cover (one of those American compilations Capitol Records released), and that is the main reason I listened to it. What I heard was probably the single most shocking and unsettling album I have ever listened to, and certainly very un-Beatlesesque despite the album cover. The album is close to unlistenable, though so much so that it comes across as intentionally amateurish. The Residents of course ended up becoming a "band" with a small but not non-existent fanbase, although I personally don't like their music very much.

How did Beatles fans react when Meet the Residents was initially released? To be clear, I am not quite sure how much exposure, if really any, this album actually had in 1974. But I can kind of imagine a Beatles fan seeing the album cover and buying the album to hear what was in it, and being shocked and unsettled by what they heard. I also think I read somewhere that there were Klaatu-like rumors among some fans that The Residents were in fact either The Beatles or a member or two, but I am not sure if this these rumors actually occurred or how common they were if this was the case.

Discussion Good Morning Good Morning

Hey everyone I just wanted to know what the sub generally thinks of this particular song? The reason I ask is because I’ve always noticed in Beatles fan spaces online people seem to generally either dislike it or at least consider it weak/the weakest track on Sgt. Pepper and honestly…

I couldn’t disagree more. Sometimes I feel alone in really liking the song. I love when the Beatles get weird in their psychedelic era and I think this track is a great example of that with the time signature shifts, sound effects, the big loud horns. The main melody itself sounds a little strange but in a great way in my opinion. Catchy while also sounding a little bit off in a way. It’s not my favorite track on the album (I personally don’t think it has any weak tracks) but it’s one I really like and was always surprised by how many people seem to not like it
