  • Is it a good idea to move?
  • Is X salary good enough?
  • How is Austin for my background?
  • Generic should I move there?
  • Do I need a car?
  • Is X or Y transport sufficient?

Over the last year, we have seen a major uptick in prices in the area, along with a steady flow of new people coming into Austin. Use this weekly post to ask your questions, try to get advice, etc on an upcoming move or questions about real estate in Austin.

Many apartment questions have always been removed on here, and we always suggest people to contact an apartment locator. Those rules still stand. But, you are welcome to ask those questions on here if you still feel the need for it.

Along with that, any new open ended question on Austin properties and real estate will be removed and asked to move to here (based on mod discretion). Many of the questions being asked have been asked many times before, which is why we would rather compile these posts into one place for people to ask and get their answers.

If you are having issues as a tenant in Austin, we highly recommend reaching out to the Austin Tenants Council here: https://www.trla.org/atc/. They may be able to help you resolve issues related to renting property in Austin.

We also recommend searching older "Weekly Real Estate" posts as well, to find answers on previous week's questions.

As always, there is a whole section on moving to Austin in our FAQ page:

I narced on someone today and feel good about it

Big ass dog in a shopping cart being pushed into HEB as I came up. Saw an officer working as security and let him know. He nodded and said ok, thanks.

Impressively, they did something about it as I saw them carrying the big ass dog out to leave soon after. They didn’t even have a leash for this dog and this wasn’t a small size carry around doggie.

Of course I saw another smaller one in the store while shopping and as I got into the elevator to leave I saw a woman hopping out of another elevator with her leashed dog.

I felt like going back up on a mission to help end this battle of inconsiderate assholes bringing dogs in the store, but I settled for my one bounty.

Ask Austin I’ve lived in Austin for nearly 10 years and don’t know what to do with myself anymore

I (32F) usually try to be extremely thorough and well structured when I post something like this but it’s 1:09am and I just want to be vulnerable with you strangers tonight.

I’ve lived in Texas for 99% of my life and graduated from TXST so I was always nearby or coming to Austin. After a year away, I officially moved to Austin in 2018. I was 24. I’ve done all the Austin musts— ACL, trail of lights, art pop-ups, farmers markets, COTA, rooftops, clubbing, … you get the point. Along the way I’ve made plenty of friends, a handful of them I can call my best friends. And of course, I’ve dated through multiple channels— meeting in person, the apps, dating events, all of that. And now that I’m 32, 33 in March, I feel like there’s almost nothing left for me here.

I hate feeling this way. I love living here. My career is here, my friends are here. I’ve been blessed to be able to watch the city grow both in ways I love and ways I absolutely loathe. It is home. But somewhere and somehow it lost its shine for me. I no longer feel like I live in a small city with tons of possibilities and lots of opportunity to build community.

I often feel like I’m living in a college town with adult fraternities and sororities made of transplants with less than 3 years of Austin under their belt. And I feel like to be part of any circle I have to be super fit and hot, know someone first or I’m required to have something to offer as a transaction— and I do have benefits to offer, but that’s not what I want as a foundation for any type of relationship.

I’m successful, confident and attractive. I’m a one income household, I’m active in the gym, I’m outdoorsy, I love to game (board and PC), I love coffee, going out to eat, hiking, etc. and yet it feels like there’s no community for me here?? Just one-on-one to small group friendships. These days I often keep to myself if I’m not with one or a few friends. I like being at home, at peace, on Discord with friends around the country.

*I admit the Discord piece might be a detriment to my IRL social life because it can fulfill the need for socialization, but it truly has provided me with a community I wasn’t expecting to find. My goal is to find the balance.*

Equally, I haven’t been on a date in a year. I had an eventful year and took a break to address messes from my 20s and stabilize myself financially. Now that I *have* more stability in my life, I have some time to invest in a potential partner. But I absolutely refuse to get back on the apps bc it feels like everyone just recycles each other from them. Not to mention how dangerous they can be for women.

In an ideal world, I will be taking steps to join extra cirriculars and indulging in hobbies that place me around the right people. But do these spaces exist where I don’t need to be the Austin Tour & Lore Guide™️ for people who moved here during the boom?

And how do you do it when you have a job that drains your social battery, a dog at home, a gym routine, etc?? I just don’t understand how people have the energy or make the time.

I think all of this boils down to: I’m feeling fatigued with my current life in Austin and I need help bringing it back to life. I used to be a social butterfly and now I feel quite the opposite.

I’m hoping some of you will guide me and those of you who have been here for 5+ years can give me hope that just because my life in Austin is starting to look different, doesn’t mean there’s nothing left for me. I can handle a little tough love because I know some of this is due to lack of effort on my part. I just don’t want to waste my time in the wrong places.

Thank you so much for reading.

Blurry quality, but i thought it was interesting as it's daytime performers rather than headliners (I'm not sure who the performers are)

I already voted, so now this is where my mind goes. Saw several of these today and realized the double negative implication of putting the circle and line over Doge.

The end of my random Tuesday night thoughts.

In a city where affordability has long been a sticking point, Austin renters now have a reason to celebrate: Living alone may be more attainable here than in any other major U.S. metro.

Austin topped a new Apartments.com ranking of the nation's most affordable metros for renters looking to ditch the roommates.

Ask Austin What was the first sign Austin was changing? (question for long time Austinites)

For fellow Austinites that have been here for a long time, what do you remember as the turning point for Austin going from a smaller government/college town to the city it has become today? For me, it was when the Frost Bank Tower was built. At the time, there was a city ordinance that no building could be taller than the Capitol. Frost Bank Tower was the first building to get an exemption to build taller than the Capitol. The skyline forever changed after that and city growth was more noticeable.

Scammers pretending to Travis County Sheriffs

There’s scammers calling pretending that they are Travis County Sheriff’s saying that they have a warrant for your arrest for not appearing for jury duty for federal court.
They will do their best to keep you on the line to put you under duress. Do your best to hang up and call the Travis county sheriff’s directly to confirm the information.
I almost was victim of being scammed out of $3k cash at the threat of being arrested until I texted friends to do more research while I was held hostage on my phone line.

Austin's apartment complexes need their own trick-or-treat routes

Last Halloween I sat in my North Austin apartment with a giant bag of candy and a plastic pumpkin outside my door.

Not one knock. I ended up eating mini Snickers for approximately two weeks.

The funny thing is, there are kids everywhere in this complex. The courtyard looks like a scooter dealership most afternoons. But half the walkways are behind key-fob doors, the buildings are separated by parking lots, and outside the gates there's a busy road with no safe walking route to the next residential block.

How are kids supposed to go door to door when most of the doors aren't accessible?

I don't blame parents for driving to Mueller or another neighborhood with actual sidewalks and houses close together. I'd probably do the same. But every year I see people wondering why nobody trick-or-treats in their neighborhood anymore, and I wonder how much of that is because so many Austin families now live in places where it's practically impossible.

Two neighbors and I have been talking about setting up a little candy walk in our courtyard this Saturday. Just a row of folding tables, some decorations and whoever wants to participate. We're checking with management about using the space.

Nothing elaborate. I just think it'd be nice for the kids here to have a Halloween that doesn't start with getting strapped into a car seat.

Has anyone lived in an Austin apartment complex that actually pulled this off? I'm especially curious how you got enough people involved to make it fun for the kids.

Ask Austin Concussion Specialists near Jonestown/Cedar Park

• Upvotes

Not in getting them - I have that piece tied down.

I’ve had post concussion syndrome for years.

I’ve managed to…you guessed it, concuss myself again.

Looking for treatment recommendations.

Currently based in Jonestown, so closer to there would be great, and preferably take Aetna.

Programs to have someone visit with a senior

Does anyone have a good recommendation for a program/service that will match a volunteer with a senior who is just looking for some company? I know someone who would like someone to come by once or twice a week to chat, play a game or do a puzzle, maybe occasionally help with a bit of meal prep or run light errands.

She has arthritis and cancer and is sometimes a bit tired but is otherwise very capable - just isolated. I think more than anything she’s just trying not to be alone as much now that she is doing the cancer treatment, which she just began last week. Not looking for healthcare services.

I’ve found familyeldercare.org and driveasenior.org but wanted to see if anyone had any other recs. Or if anyone has used those services and has any feedback on them.

Ask Austin Anyone know of Austin volunteer gigs that actually require technical/problem-solving or more in-depth involvement? (Not just scooping soup or moving boxes)

I get two weeks off at a time and want to get involved locally, but every directory (Do512, volunteeratx, etc.) has a low barrier of entry and I find it hard to connect with people my age. Paddleboarding and picking up trash on the lake was a good one but people show up with their friends and just go in their own direction. I am currently looking at Austin Habitat for Humanity because it seems like they will do home building and repair.

Because of my time off, I can do concentrated 30–40 hour projects instead of 2 hours every Tuesday. I guess I'm being a choosy beggar but I want to get more involved in the community and find something that I can be excited about.

Where do folks with technical, engineering, or trades skills actually plug in around Austin without getting stuck in zero barrier of entry busywork? Any scrappy org recommendations? Bonus points if I can upskill while volunteering.
