Ask Austin What was the first sign Austin was changing? (question for long time Austinites)

For fellow Austinites that have been here for a long time, what do you remember as the turning point for Austin going from a smaller government/college town to the city it has become today? For me, it was when the Frost Bank Tower was built. At the time, there was a city ordinance that no building could be taller than the Capitol. Frost Bank Tower was the first building to get an exemption to build taller than the Capitol. The skyline forever changed after that and city growth was more noticeable.

Ask Austin What is with all the negativity surrounding major events in Austin?

I get that various aspects can always be improved and feedback is important, but Austin you are privileged to have these events in your backyard. The boosts to the local economy for the inconvenience of extra traffic for a few weekends seems like a no brainer to me.
BE GLAD YOU ARE NOT HOUSTON! Literally nothing of note outside of the Rodeo anymore.

What is this? Rotating S-shaped aircraft over South Austin?

Saw facing south from South Austin, flying east to west. About 6:43pm on Oct 27th.

UAP jokes aside… what kind of aircraft is this? It looks S-shaped and it was rotating. Sounded like a normal plane flying over. Looked pretty high up.

Ask Austin Doctors allowing shadowing in Austin!!

Hello! I’m a senior undergraduate Human Biology major at UT Austin looking for shadowing or clinical experience opportunities in the Austin area. I’m interested in surgery, but I’d be grateful for an opportunity in any specialty or clinical setting.
I’ve reached out to several doctors by email but haven’t had much luck. If you know a physician who allows students to shadow or have any advice on finding opportunities, please send me a DM or leave a comment. Thank you!

Allergy Looking for a good chronic illness / mold-informed doctor in the Austin area

• Upvotes

I’m looking for recommendations for a really good doctor.

I’m hoping to find a doctor who is knowledgeable about things like:

Mold exposure and potential related health effects !!! ( Really Important for me )
Chronic fatigue and complex chronic illness
Lyme disease and other tick-borne illnesses, when clinically indicated
Mycotoxins and environmental exposures
Dysautonomia, POTS, and other possible causes of exercise and heat intolerance
Nutritional deficiencies and other underlying contributors

I’m open to a conventional, integrative, or functional medicine doctor, as long as they take a thorough, evidence-based approach and genuinely want to help figure out what’s going on. Ideally, they would accept health insurance, since I want to find someone I can continue seeing without spending thousands of dollars out of pocket.

If you’ve personally had a good experience with someone who helped you navigate a complicated chronic illness, I would really appreciate your recommendations! Please share their name, specialty, location, and whether they accept insurance. Thank you! ❤️

Also open to Dallas, Houston and San Antonio doctors!!

Hi all, I was in a collision today (Tuesday, Oct 27) around 2:40 PM at Parmer Ln & Amberglen Blvd.

A black VW Jetta and a silver VW Tiguan collided in the intersection while the Tiguan was turning left. Williamson County Sheriff responded.

If you saw it or have dashcam footage, please DM me. Even a short clip helps. Thank you!

Austin Gastro and Provider Transfer

I am currently a patient at Austin Gastroenterology being treated for gastritis and Barrett's esophagus. I’m looking to switch providers within the practice because I’m not comfortable with my current doctor based on my location and online patient feedback .

My research led me to Dr. Kenneth Ellis and Dr. Andy Tau. However, Dr. Ellis isn't accepting new patients right now, and for Dr. Tau, the office asked me to submit a formal transfer request.

Has anyone here gone through the internal transfer process at Austin Gastro? Also, does anyone know if there’s a way or alternative path to get an appointment with Dr. Ellis despite him being booked/closed to new patients? Thanks in advance!

Date ideas like Trivia or Escape Rooms?

Looking for something unique and a fun date idea. Similiar to Trivia or Escape rooms but not trivia or escape rooms. Something fun, interactive and unique?

Thanks

I know what they're going for, but doesn't this sign really say "Don't don't Doge our Austin"....or said differently, Doge Our Austin!

I already voted, so now this is where my mind goes. Saw several of these today and realized the double negative implication of putting the circle and line over Doge.

The end of my random Tuesday night thoughts.

Ask Austin Where can I go on Halloween with my friends without having a claustrophobic experience?

We went on Dirty 6 last year (horrible decision, I know), then tried to do 4th Street. We couldn't get in anywhere... We tried for maybe 3 hours.

Not trying to have this experience again. We're in our early 30s and the spooky part of Halloween is now the drunk early 20-year-olds. However, we still want to have fun and pretend we still have it in us for one night. What are our realistic options to have a good time?

Project Hail Mary tickets for tonight’s 7PM show

Hi everyone, a while ago I bought tickets for tonight’s project Hail Mary showing at the Bullock IMAX, but due to an emergency I can no longer go. Very last minute, but I want to transfer them to someone who can make it. Not looking to make money on these, will give them away to the first person who DMs with their favorite PHM quote!

The showing is tonight at 7PM, doors at 6, you’d probably need to get in line ASAP for good seats.

My car was stolen out of my driveway in South Austin (sweet water glen) sometime after midnight but before noon Sunday morning the 25th. It’s a White 2017 Audi q5 LP# SPW 1731, it has a roof rack otherwise no decals or stickers. The windshield sticker went out in 2024. If anyone by chance sees it or has any leads please reach out. I’ve made a police report and the now waiting with no answers in sight is utterly devastating.

Scammers pretending to Travis County Sheriffs

There’s scammers calling pretending that they are Travis County Sheriff’s saying that they have a warrant for your arrest for not appearing for jury duty for federal court.
They will do their best to keep you on the line to put you under duress. Do your best to hang up and call the Travis county sheriff’s directly to confirm the information.
I almost was victim of being scammed out of $3k cash at the threat of being arrested until I texted friends to do more research while I was held hostage on my phone line.

Did you see that Apple Maps added the Congress Ave bats and kayakers to its Austin map? Also heard something about a UFO but haven't found that yet. Kind of cool easter egg (or should I say Halloween egg)

Ask Austin I’ve lived in Austin for nearly 10 years and don’t know what to do with myself anymore

I (32F) usually try to be extremely thorough and well structured when I post something like this but it’s 1:09am and I just want to be vulnerable with you strangers tonight.

I’ve lived in Texas for 99% of my life and graduated from TXST so I was always nearby or coming to Austin. After a year away, I officially moved to Austin in 2018. I was 24. I’ve done all the Austin musts— ACL, trail of lights, art pop-ups, farmers markets, COTA, rooftops, clubbing, … you get the point. Along the way I’ve made plenty of friends, a handful of them I can call my best friends. And of course, I’ve dated through multiple channels— meeting in person, the apps, dating events, all of that. And now that I’m 32, 33 in March, I feel like there’s almost nothing left for me here.

I hate feeling this way. I love living here. My career is here, my friends are here. I’ve been blessed to be able to watch the city grow both in ways I love and ways I absolutely loathe. It is home. But somewhere and somehow it lost its shine for me. I no longer feel like I live in a small city with tons of possibilities and lots of opportunity to build community.

I often feel like I’m living in a college town with adult fraternities and sororities made of transplants with less than 3 years of Austin under their belt. And I feel like to be part of any circle I have to be super fit and hot, know someone first or I’m required to have something to offer as a transaction— and I do have benefits to offer, but that’s not what I want as a foundation for any type of relationship.

I’m successful, confident and attractive. I’m a one income household, I’m active in the gym, I’m outdoorsy, I love to game (board and PC), I love coffee, going out to eat, hiking, etc. and yet it feels like there’s no community for me here?? Just one-on-one to small group friendships. These days I often keep to myself if I’m not with one or a few friends. I like being at home, at peace, on Discord with friends around the country.

*I admit the Discord piece might be a detriment to my IRL social life because it can fulfill the need for socialization, but it truly has provided me with a community I wasn’t expecting to find. My goal is to find the balance.*

Equally, I haven’t been on a date in a year. I had an eventful year and took a break to address messes from my 20s and stabilize myself financially. Now that I *have* more stability in my life, I have some time to invest in a potential partner. But I absolutely refuse to get back on the apps bc it feels like everyone just recycles each other from them. Not to mention how dangerous they can be for women.

In an ideal world, I will be taking steps to join extra cirriculars and indulging in hobbies that place me around the right people. But do these spaces exist where I don’t need to be the Austin Tour & Lore Guide™️ for people who moved here during the boom?

And how do you do it when you have a job that drains your social battery, a dog at home, a gym routine, etc?? I just don’t understand how people have the energy or make the time.

I think all of this boils down to: I’m feeling fatigued with my current life in Austin and I need help bringing it back to life. I used to be a social butterfly and now I feel quite the opposite.

I’m hoping some of you will guide me and those of you who have been here for 5+ years can give me hope that just because my life in Austin is starting to look different, doesn’t mean there’s nothing left for me. I can handle a little tough love because I know some of this is due to lack of effort on my part. I just don’t want to waste my time in the wrong places.

Thank you so much for reading.

Austin's apartment complexes need their own trick-or-treat routes

Last Halloween I sat in my North Austin apartment with a giant bag of candy and a plastic pumpkin outside my door.

Not one knock. I ended up eating mini Snickers for approximately two weeks.

The funny thing is, there are kids everywhere in this complex. The courtyard looks like a scooter dealership most afternoons. But half the walkways are behind key-fob doors, the buildings are separated by parking lots, and outside the gates there's a busy road with no safe walking route to the next residential block.

How are kids supposed to go door to door when most of the doors aren't accessible?

I don't blame parents for driving to Mueller or another neighborhood with actual sidewalks and houses close together. I'd probably do the same. But every year I see people wondering why nobody trick-or-treats in their neighborhood anymore, and I wonder how much of that is because so many Austin families now live in places where it's practically impossible.

Two neighbors and I have been talking about setting up a little candy walk in our courtyard this Saturday. Just a row of folding tables, some decorations and whoever wants to participate. We're checking with management about using the space.

Nothing elaborate. I just think it'd be nice for the kids here to have a Halloween that doesn't start with getting strapped into a car seat.

Has anyone lived in an Austin apartment complex that actually pulled this off? I'm especially curious how you got enough people involved to make it fun for the kids.
