Latin American Politics Brazilians who supported/voted for Bolsonaro: How do you view his departure from Brazil and his legal troubles?

Context: For those who are not following the latest news, Bolsonaro is reportedly leaving/flying out to the US despite having his passport canceled and being under a travel ban by the Supreme Court

However, leaving the country right before the transition made him look like he was running away from ongoing investigations and corruption allegations rather than standing his ground.

For those of you who voted for him: How do you interpret this move? Do you see it as a tactical retreat or as an act of cowardice and abandonment of his base?

How is small talk like in Latin America, broadly speaking?

In lots of European places which would famously include Germans and Dutch people, there’s a good chance the person isn’t a fan of chit chat or small talk, or sometimes really blunt and it’ll be so easy for you to notice that he doesn’t care. How is that like in Latin America? More open to small talks and random interactions?

Is enmeshment a concept in Latin America?

My husband is enmeshed with his mother who lives in Mexico. She is very demanding and throws a fit when she doesn’t come #1 in his life over his own wife and son. I have had to cut contact with her because it has practically led to my divorce. If I say the dynamics is enmeshment will she understand that term?

Latin American Politics Why do Brazilian right wingers say the Brazilian election was a fraud for extending the voting hours?

Regardless if it was wrong or right (in my opinion it's right), why would it benefit either candidate in particular if it was nationwide and not controversially in some regions. Are there any other reasons for the "fraud" excuse? If anything I feel like it's a Freudian slip, because some mayors restricted public transport and saying that it was a fraud for extending hours is kinda a way of telling on themselves.

Food Food recomendation

What foods and products would you recommend for a traveler? I hope you can avoid the obvious ones like feijoada/coxinha in Brazil, empanadas/medialunas/milanesas in Argentina, ceviche/pisco in Chile, etc.

My recommendation as a Brazilian is arroz carreteiro (rice with meats from a barbecue), frango com quiabo (chicken with okra), bolo mané pelado (a cassava cake), bombocado (a coconut sweet), cajuína (a drink made from the cashew fruit), guaraná antártica, moqueca (fish stew in coconut milk, there are two versions: the capixaba one that uses annatto and the bahiana one that uses palm oil) and vaca atolada (a stew of beef and cassava).

Latin American Politics On what level do our Latin neighbours put Lula da Silva??

With Lula’s historic turn yesterday, I saw many of our neighbours on Twitter saying that Lula was the greatest figure of the 21st century, others saying that he is among the greatest Latinos of all time, that he sits together with Allende, Perón, Zapata...

What is your country’s general perception of Lula? Is he already seen as a historical figure in your country?

And just to contextualise for those who don’t understand what he did yesterday. The big tech’s were clearly favouring the right in the elections, their posts made 200 million views without any effort, the left tried much harder, took to the streets and took the narrative for her again and the turn came, I already consider the most historic election in our country, Lula reached another level yesterday.

Latin American Politics Why did Lula win the election?

This is more a personal view than a question, but I welcome your own contributions. How come Lula lost the first round of the Brazilian elections, to then come and win the second round? (And by a bigger margin).

There are a few factors:

  1. A huge digital presence

For the first time, the Brazilian left decided to compete in the digital forums (whatsapp, Facebook, Twitter, even reddit I guess), with Lula's media manager Janones, creating the WhatsApp channel 'Lula's Army's to give missions to followers, like circulating videos and posts in social media.

  1. Presence in the streets

With a bigger digital presence, there was a bigger organization for streets presence, manifestations and public acts became huge and more frequent. There were at least three nation wide protests during this month, calling the attention of the traditional media.

  1. Presidential debates

After denying participation in the presidential debates, Lula came around and decided to debate Bolsonaro in the second round. Although the debates were generally seen as negative, Lula came around as more prepared and experienced, while Flávio Bolsonaro came around as arrogant, offensive, and generally a flip-flopper.

Tldr: the presence in social media was seen as something Lula could not afford to lose, the base was super charged, and he got ten more million votes than in the first round.

Looking for soul-gushing, heartbreaking songs, whether they’re sad, romantic, or make you reflect on life. The kind of music that makes you feel everything deep down in your soul.

Latin American Politics Argies who vividly remember the 1998-2002 crisis and the ''Argentinazo'', how did you live it?

In 2001 Argentina was going through a crisis that started in 1998 and lasted until 2002, this led to protests all over the country, with the biggest ones being in Buenos Aires and Rosario, in 2001 in response to what is known as the ''corralito'', a government imposition made by economic minister at the moment, Domingo Cavallo which made people unable to withdraw cash from banks.

This would later affect Uruguay as well in 2002.

I'm sure there are some older folks in here who can answer the question.

Musicalizing with (in my opinion) a Latin American anthem, Sr. Cobranza.

Latin American Politics How might Lula’s victory affect Brazil’s relationship with the U.S. and the political direction of Latin America?

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has won reelection, defeating Flávio Bolsonaro with 51.8% of the vote to 48.2%, according to reported results. The victory comes amid a broader shift toward conservative leadership in parts of Latin America and tensions with U.S. President Donald Trump over tariffs and regional influence.

Flávio Bolsonaro has rejected the result and called for the election to be annulled following a controversial extension of voting hours.

How might Lula’s victory affect Brazil’s relationship with the United States and the political direction of Latin America?

Latin American Politics Do you think Lula's victory signifies the "End" of the rise of the far right on the continent?

Well, first of all, congratulations to the Brazilians. I read that many people were scared about the possibility of Bolsonaro winning the presidency.

Second, I think Lula's victory (a left-leaning leader) will set a tremendous precedent in Latin America, especially since next year are the Argentine elections and the odds of Milei's victory are 50/50 (there's still no clear rival for Milei, and that's worrying).

Megathread 2026 Brazilian Election: Voting Extension Controversy & Live Results Megathread

Well, election day took an unexpected turn.

Supreme Court Justice Cristiano Zanin ordered voting to be extended nationwide until 7 PM Brasília time, following reports of public transportation problems affecting voters.

The decision came just as polling stations were closing, causing confusion across the country. It was later clarified that the extension only applies to polling stations that hadn't already closed.

The vote count was temporarily paused as a result.

We're opening this new thread to discuss the decision, how effectively it was implemented, and whether it actually helped affected voters.

We'll also use it to follow the presidential results as they come in.

As always, keep things civil.

Tourism Traveling from one country to another by land. Is there a separate line for LATAM nationalities and non-LATAM nationalities?

How easy is this? Is it easier than flying? Also how safe is this?

Which countries are safe? How about Brazil, Paraguay, and Argentina? I'm thinking of skipping Colombia and Ecuador

Is there an entry and exit border in all countries? Is it different if you go by land and fly? I'm asking because I was confused when I was in another country where there was no entry border.

Moving to Latin America Most Welcoming Places for New Friendships

Hello All,

Are there any Latin American countries or areas within them that are more welcoming and easier for foreigners to establish friendships with natives? I am in the process of learning Spanish now (plan to be conversational/B2 level by the end of next summer). I want to move to a Spanish-speaking area where I can culturally immerse myself, absent of few, if any, Americans. I assume my pursuits are easier in some countries and areas more than others, so I would like to learn of other people’s experiences.
