Official Important: Please read before requesting an identification or creating a post.
Important! Everyone should understand the argument against the transportation and rearing of exotics. I will urge everyone to read about it here: https://www.tapatalk.com/groups/antfarm/consequences-of-rearing-of-exotic-ant-species-t7500.html
━━━━━━━━━━ ∘◦ Discord ◦∘ ━━━━━━━━━━
For questions about ants, and identification, please ask in our discord server as response times may be quicker. We're always happy to help!: discord.gg/c7qCmfYqYZ
━━━━━━━━━━ ∘◦ Identification ◦∘ ━━━━━━━━━━
How to request an identification:
If possible, clearly focus pictures of the head, side, and top of the body to make identifying easier. What follows is the important information we need to know to help us to identify your ant.
FIRST-Where was it collected? Country and nearest city or town on a map (include location in the thread title), elevation if in a very mountainous area such as the Rockies, Alps, Himalayas, Andes.
SECOND-Habitat of collection, including nesting medium (wood, soil, leaves tied together with silk, etc.) and type of vegetation (forest, grassland, park/lawn/garden, desert).
THIRD-Coloration, hue, and pattern? Uniform?, Head darker? Gaster darker? Legs lighter or darker? Any spots? Also, shininess, dullness.
FOURTH-Distinguishing characteristics, such as one or two segments in waist; location, length, and orientation of any spines or bumps on the mid-portion of the body or waist; head shape, etc.
FIFTH-Length in millimeters. (Width is also helpful.) NO guessing! Stretch out a dead or chilled individual or several individuals of different sizes along with a millimeter rule. 16ths of an inch will do as a poor second to millimeters.
SIXTH-Anything else distinctive, such as odor, behavior, etc.
Tip #1: If you can take clear photographs of the ants up close, then please post them. This would help a lot.
Tip #2: For those who write anting journals, please put the exact location and dates in the thread titles like: Palm Spring, CA (4/10/2004).
Tip #3: If using videos, then please make sure that they are clear, close up, and stable (no shaky camera). Otherwise, they are useless.
Now, you can post your identification request in a new thread (not this one).

ID(entification)/Sightings/Showcase Found this 12 mm ant in Tenerife, Canary Islands. Any idea what species it might be and whether it's a dealate queen?
Hey everyone! I found this ant earlier tonight, around midnight, walking alone on the ground at a gas station in southern Tenerife, Canary Islands.
It rained yesterday, and today has been pretty humid with almost no wind, so I thought it might be a good time for nuptial flights. She's about 12 mm long, with a reddish head and thorax and a darker, almost black abdomen. I noticed a few marks on her thorax that look like they could be wing scars, but I'm not really sure.
I'm hoping she's a queen, but I could be completely wrong. Does anyone recognize the species or know if she's actually a queen?

News New resident in the Garden of Ants!
She came. She crawled. She dreamed of becoming a butterfly. Unfortunately, the ants had other plans :) 🐜
A little update from Garden of Ants, the ant colony RTS/sim we are working on.
Does the way she crawls look natural to you? What kind of caterpillar would you like to see in a game about ants?

ID(entification)/Sightings/Showcase super active red harvester ant nest
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
One of the biggest and most active nests I’ve seen, I think, ever. The nest was about 10 feet wide, and they were gathering from about 110 feet away. One thing I thought was really cool though, was just how they were drinking from the sprinkler, so they basically just have endless water right at their nest

ID(entification)/Sightings/Showcase Trying to build a year-round, worldwide nuptial flight map from keeper reports. Want to help?
Every season, the same questions come up: "Are Camponotus flying yet?" "Did anyone see Lasius go up today?" The answers are scattered across Discord channels, old threads and word of mouth, so they're gone by next year.
I'm a keeper building ANTS (ants.arcosants.com), and one piece of it is a nuptial flight map. The goal is simple: keepers everywhere log the flights they see, and over time we get a real, shared record of when and where each genus flies, all year and in both hemispheres.
How it works:
- You report a flight with the genus (species if you know it), the date and time, and the weather if you noticed.
- Locations are coarse. Pins show a rough area, never your exact spot, and sharing is opt-in.
- Reports are reviewed before they show up, so the map stays trustworthy.
Why it matters: with enough reports, we can see patterns for each region, like the weeks Pheidole flies in Florida versus Texas, or how a warm spring shifts things. That helps new keepers know when to look, and it builds a dataset that doesn't exist yet in one place.
It only works if lots of people contribute, so even one report helps. I'd love feedback too: what would make you actually log a flight? What info would you want to see on the map?

Chat/General Myrmecocystus mexicanus keepers
Hi!!! what do you wish you’d known starting out? Hey! My queen just arrived with around 20–30 eggs. I’d love some advice from people who’ve raised this species: feeding during founding, temperature, moisture, and how often to check on her. What worked for you, and what mistakes should I avoid? I’d love to hear your experiences, including anything that went wrong!
