PSA A Reminder About Our Community Rules

Hello /r/Yukon,

Lately, we’ve noticed an increase in heated arguments, trolling, and disrespectful comments in discussions, particularly regarding First Nations issues. As your moderators, we believe it's important to ensure that this community remains a welcoming and respectful space for everyone while encouraging thoughtful and meaningful discussion.

We’ve already issued numerous warnings and bans recently, and while we want to encourage open dialogue, users who continue to post inflammatory or disrespectful content will be banned without further notice.

Let’s revisit Rule 1: Be Respectful:
Our goal is to foster thoughtful, constructive discussions. This means:

  • No personal attacks: Engage with ideas, not individuals.
  • No insults or bigotry: Racism, sexism, and hate speech will result in immediate comment removal and a permanent ban.
  • No trolling: This includes deliberately inflammatory or disruptive behavior.
  • No threats: Zero tolerance for threats or intimidation.

Racist comments, in particular, have no place here. This subreddit is for all Yukoners, and it is our collective responsibility to treat each other with dignity and civility.

If you see comments or posts that violate these rules, please report them using the report function or message the mods. Let’s work together to keep this space constructive and supportive.

Thank you,
The /r/Yukon Moderation Team

Question December Activity Suggestions?

• Upvotes

My fiancé and I have recently booked a six-day and five night trip to Whitehorse. We will be up there right after Christmas Day.

We weren’t able to get every night booked for some Aurora viewing because two of the nights were already full.

Does anyone have any suggestions of what we could do on the two nights when we’re not outside? We do love the outdoors, photography, and exploring cultural experiences.

We are from the Metro Vancouver area. But we’ve been getting that feeling that once we retire in less than 10 years from now, we want to live north.

Thanks! 🙏

Question Whitehorse - selling vehicle for parts/repair

Anyone know of any mechanics/individuals who buy cars for parts/repairs? Not having much luck trying to sell my 2009 Subaru forester on fb (failed a compression test, won't start). Leaving Whitehorse in a week - needs to get gone!

Discussion Is it time to ban trophy hunting in the Yukon?

Thumbnail

"The proliferation of guided trophy hunting in the Yukon has reached a critical tipping point. Across countless online videos, we see outfitters bringing in out-of-territory hunters to target “trophy” animals, specifically the largest, genetically superior moose in our herds. This is not just about sport; it is a systematic removal of the best genetics from our wilderness. When the strongest bulls are gone, the health and size of the entire population collapse".

- Norm Boisvert

And beware the tired rhetoric (greenwashing) that "trophy hunting is killing to conserve" -

https://therevelator.org/trophy-hunting-greenwashing/

"Trophy hunting is an act of violence that stands as a tragic symbol of our fractured relationship with nature".

https://bantrophyhunting.org

And, as Norm correctly observed in his letter, & is reiterated in this petition -

"The removal of the largest, strongest, & biologically fittest individuals is particularly concerning. These possess important traits that have aided in their species’ survival during the course of evolution. They are now more important than ever in our rapidly changing environment".

And you know what other problem we'd fix if we banned trophy hunting in the Yukon?

Our Donald Trump Jr. problem -

Question air north schedule

I (unfortunately) book a lot of last minute travel for work. ten years ago, this was never a problem and there were always air north flights available. This year, I have tried to book flights multiple times and there are no available seats on air north flights for days and days at a time. I know the answer is to book earlier, but sometimes it's not possible. Is this because the territory is growing rapidly? mine workers taking up all the space on the flights, or has the flight schedule changed? any ideas?

Discussion Leaving the Yukon and coming back

I am looking to hear from people who have left the Yukon and come back (and maybe multiple times). I am originally from BC, went to the Yukon for two years from 2017-2018, then came home due to family reasons but then came back to Whitehorse in early 2022. Recently left again and immediately regret it. This past winter was hard in the Yukon and I don’t have any family (but do have close friends) in Whitehorse. Does anyone else have similar stories? Am I crazy for wanting to go back?

News Electricity rates could rise 53 per cent without federal investment, minister warns

Thumbnail
yukon-news.com

"Yukon Energy, Mines and Resources minister warns that, without federal investment, families could face a further 53 per cent electricity-rate increase as the territory tackles aging infrastructure and rising demand with a small ratepayer base" -

----------------------------------

Yukoners are feeling reality bite. Some Whitehorse residents have had ATCO bills that exceeded their monthly mortgage payments. Two of my neighbours have just put in wood stoves. We are also mulling it, as a backup. Even though we dislike the pollution these stoves cause, inside and out.

All while the Yukon Government and ATCO continue to pass the buck. To us. Something isn't passing the sniff test.

Winter is coming and the outlook is grim.

Even back in 2023, it was clear that -

"...the profit motive of a privatized energy company [based in in Alberta] is hurting [Yukon] consumers":

https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/north/atco-yukon-energy-public-hearing-1.7045837

And Yukoners have now had enough of being fobbed off and exploited by duplicitous billing practices excused as a "new" (actually 3 year old) billing system with "hiccups" -

https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/north/after-months-of-customer-complaints-yukon-utilities-admit-billing-system-problems-dating-back-to-2023-9.7233630

Yukoners are trying to mobilize around the issue. There is a Facebook group of 370 (and counting) disgruntled consumers, the so called Little People grown wise to the self-serving arithmetic of the 1% -

If you feel so inclined, you can join a Yukon Facebook group called "I've had issues with ATCO":

https://www.facebook.com/share/g/1B2oWNMC3A/?mibextid=wwXIfr

We've been told not to worry because there's going to be an "independent" third-party review of ATCO's billing system, paid for by the company being reviewed. (Yes, ATCO) -

https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/north/atco-electric-yukon-says-it-will-hire-independent-auditor-to-look-into-its-billing-system-9.7319115

Updated: 👉 Now pair our rocketing heating bills with today's bad news from the Yukon Bureau of Statistics, that -

"The bureau’s September 2026 report shows the Consumer Price Index climbed 6.1 per cent year-over-year, outpacing every single province and territorial capital across the entire country. That 6.1 per cent jump is three full percentage points higher than the national average of 3.1 per cent".

Moreover, electricity is indicated as one of the main drivers behind this increase in the Yukon CPI -

"ELECTRICITY has steadily become a familiar cost pressure for local residents. Utility price increases began affecting household budgets back in July 2025 and have continued to influence the territory’s inflation numbers through the current year":

https://yukon-news.com/2026/10/21/whitehorse-inflation-jumps-to-6-1-leading-canada-in-september/

Consider this -

"It is clear that making the utility system a business instead of a universal public service makes the investments for the grid the most expensive they can be, instead of affordable for everyone":

https://climateandcommunity.org/research/overcharged/

"...The corporations who own the grid will not, by design, put our needs before their profits".

And who owns ATCO?

https://www.atco.com/en-ca/about-us/history.html

▶️ ATCO Electric Yukon (formerly the Yukon Electrical Company Limited) is a private, investor-owned utility operating in the territory;
▶️ It is a subsidiary of the ATCO Group, a publicly traded global corporation rooted in #Alberta;
▶️ and originally founded by the Southern family of Calgary.

Question:
Which Yukon political party presided over the Yukon Government when this dubious decision was made?

Answer:
The Yukon Party, the same party back in power, now passing the buck. To us -

https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/north/yukon-atco-discussed-co-owning-yukon-energy-document-shows-1.812264

What can we do? Immediately, not a lot, unfortunately. Although identifying the root of the problem helps.

And "Maybe, if enough people start doing this, the powers that be ...are just going to have to sit up. and take notice, and actually drag themselves into the 21st century and accommodate multiple distributed sources of energy on the Yukon grid":

Question Getting to Eclipse Hot Springs without a car

Hello! I saw a similar post asking the same question about a month back and am finding myself in a similar position now. I’m currently visiting Whitehorse with my mom and we would love to check out the hot springs, but don’t have a car.

Would anyone be up for an afternoon or evening soak with their entry covered by us, in exchange for a ride? Kind of a shot in the dark but I figured it doesn’t hurt to try and maybe we’d make a friend in the process!
