With one week left until Election Day and five days remaining of early voting, I wanted to update the community on some general info.
To start, I thought I'd address a complaint I've been seeing a LOT on social media about the sheer volume of campaign text messages and phone calls. Yes, they're super annoying, and the people on the other end don't really want to be chasing after prospective voters either. Each of the campaigns work independently, however they're (typically) drawing from the same list of people who have yet to vote. Want to get off that list? GO VOTE.
We've entered the stage where essentially any time of day at any of the five voting locations, you'll get in and out quickly. The quietest EV site is the MLK Community Center at 401 S 8th St downtown. Take your ID and, if you'd like, your sample ballot for a little assistance. Don't worry though - there'll be plenty of volunteers at any of the sites tripping over themselves to hand you a conservative or a blue ballot. I'm calling them 'conservative' and 'blue' rather than R or D because that's the way I've been hearing volunteers on both sides talk about their own sample ballots.
Folks under 40 really need to step it up. Over 21,000 people 65+ have already voted in New Hanover County, while only 6,382 people under 40 have done the same. The last opportunity to vote early over the weekend, which may be easiest for working families/students, is this Saturday from 8a-3:00. That's also the LAST OPPORTUNITY to register to vote if you're at all concerned your registration may have an issue (you've moved, you've been inactive, whatever). You will not be able to register to vote on Election Day.
Speaking of Election Day, which is Tuesday, November 3rd from 6:30a to 7:30p, you must vote at your local precinct site regardless of what may be convenient to you in the moment. You can find your precinct polling site here. For a variety of reasons - from marking it off your to-do list to getting off the call lists to being able to check that your ballot was accepted - it's best to vote early.
I'm not an elections official, but I am a local activist and have been working closely with campaigns this cycle. I understand other people aren't as plugged in as I am, so I hope this has been helpful and I'd be happy to answer questions/direct anyone to helpful resources.
GO VOTE!
