Meta Update to the Video Rule

Hey Seraphs!

First off, happy holidays!

The devs and I took some time to review the subreddit rules to see if there was anything we wanted to adjust or clarify. One that stuck out was the "No videos or streams" rule.

The "no videos" rule was one of the first ones implemented. At the time, the subreddit was being flooded with videos, lets plays, etc. and this ended up drowning out any actual discussion that was going on. At the time a blanket rule made sense. Times change though, and it makes sense to reconsider the rules from time to time.

So we're going to make an adjustment to the video rule and see how it goes, and take it from there.

Below are some examples of what is and isn't allowed. While we can't account for every occasion, we'll do our best to enforce the spirit of whats outlined below.

What's allowed:

  • A new lets play series kicks off? Fine to share!
  • A base or server tour hosted on youtube? Fine to share!
  • A one off video, say deep diving into the lore? Fine to share!
  • A big creator or streamer is trying Vintage Story and want to get excited and give them their flowers? Fine to share!

What's not allowed/should be posted on r/VintageStoryVideos:

  • Videos not directly related to Vintage Story
  • every episode of a 'lets play' series
  • when you start your livestream on twitch, youtube, etc.

Again, we are going to try this out, see how it goes, and make additional adjustments over time.

If you have any concerns, feedback, etc. please let us know.

Thanks!

As someone into foraging and wild-crafting it makes me so pleased how well VS replicates the real-world experience

Here's what wild cranberries look like - ripe and ready to harvest. The low-growing habit, the patchy way they grow, the way the plants blend in and are hard to spot - until you get used to what they look like and then you kind of get a sixth sense for them. It's all so reminiscent of the in-game experience.

Ruined Windmill!

Started a new world, and found a ruined windmill immediately. Found aome cool stuff, and everything i needed for early ages was nearby, so I set up my jammed earth hut nearby.

Come nightfall, my sanity starts plummeting! I had to run away until sunrise. Broke down the hut, moves another 50 blocks away, thought I was good. NOPE! Next night, same thing. Do ruins normally do this?! How far away do I have to be?

Modding Mod request/idea: drying mushrooms and wild plant seasonality

I cant code but the fact that no one has made this yet is driving me nuts, so I'm hoping someone might pick this up.

I collect mushrooms in real life and one of the best ways to store them long term is to clean them and string them up in garlands to dry somewhere with good airflow. Dehydrators are faster and easier but this is how I was taught.

The mushrooms in vintage story are strangely long lived in storage anyways, I'd just like to have to actually clean my finds and store them correctly to make the most out of my foraged foods. Also garlands of drying mushrooms would look great in any autumnnal kitchen.

This could be expanded into sun drying foods on mats or baskets and having to worry about scavengers and bad weather. Jerky, stock fish, dried fruit... The possibilities are there.

Secondly, I would really like it if there was a way to make certain plants only available in specific times of the year. Some form of fresh green in spring, to ward off winters malnutrition, berries and fruit in summer, mushrooms, nuts roots in autumn. This would make preserving what you can horde much more important. It has always bothered me a little that hunger is basically solved halfway through your first year. Let me roleplay a struggling subsistence farmer, damn it!

If anyone picks this up, please let me know! Also, what ways of food preservation are common in your neck of the woods that you would like to see added?

Mod [Repost] The wait, is almost over!

(Deleted last post because I suddenly could no longer see comments. EruTheTeapot was also seeing comments no longer load. As an apology, here's a peak at a new station!)

As you all know, ive been descending into the madness of chiseling. No, I am not just chiseling my life away. I am chiseling my life essence away!

Running on 4hrs of sleep a day, caffeine, cheeze-itz, and probably other things I dont remember; I have almost brought my new chisel mod to a full 1.0.x. This has been tested in creative and survival with a friend, and is now being tested on a server.

While myself and EruTheTeapot work on modeling of tools and utilities, I want you all to know that I am VERY excited to bring this to you guys! I have been holding out on an early release because there was many bugs, and incorrect actions to intentions. But now, I feel confident that this is just about ready for release.

(Final preparations include: recipe crafting, utility additions, and compatibility building.)

Soon, we can ALL descend into the madness that is my chiseling. Maybe, JUST MAYBE, there'll be some secrets on a later release that will lead you on a journey for more materials. Intense sleepless staring

To answer a question from the previous post, this is compatible with chisel tools. Ill have a handbook guide and information about this compatibility posted on the ModDB.

Question How do I pick up a filled trap?

I’m a very new player and I can’t figure out how to pick this up. It has a rooster in it. I have empty item spots but when I walk over it nothing happens. I can’t seem to click or interact with it at all. I dug the blocks under it and it just fell down. Still can’t get it

Mod VSPT Arrives on Linux! 0.3.0 adds Volumetric Clouds, Rainfall, Rainbows, Performance Improvements, and lots more Bug Fixes!

What's new in 0.3.0

VSPT is on Linux!

This is the first Linux release. It runs natively, not through Wine, with:

  • HDR on Wayland, with the path traced view shown straight to your display.
  • DLSS Ray Reconstruction through NVIDIA's own Linux libraries.
  • The same setup and updates as Windows: install the mod, click Set up and restart, and it downloads what it needs. Linux players get VSPT: Runtime (Linux) in place of the Windows runtime, picked automatically.
  • Oh, and it runs like 30% faster than Windows. What the heck Windows.

I have tested on a fresh Bazzite install. I am a Linux noob. I am sure there will be lots of issues given everyone's different Linux setups, but I am also quite confident Linux users are good at solving problems!

Issues go here: https://github.com/unfocused-mods/vspt-issues

Volumetric clouds - due to popular demand!

  • Set the game's own Clouds setting to Volumetric and VSPT now draws real volumetric clouds, shaped to roughly align with the game's own cloud coverage.
  • They look cool, and they even run faster than the classic style clouds!
  • New Cloud quality and Cloud style settings to tune them.
  • Haze and fog now fade the clouds into the sky, and the scene's fog sits properly in front of them.

Rainfall and rainbows

With Volumetric clouds on, rain now falls from the clouds themselves, in curtains you can watch from miles away:

  • Rain hangs from the cloud it falls from, and moves with it. It leans with the wind, and snow, falling slower, leans further.
  • It sits in the world's fog like the land does, so distant rain fades into the haze, and it reaches all the way down to the sea.
  • Rain clouds are dark underneath, darker still in a thunderstorm, and a curtain with the sun behind it glows at the edges. At dusk, the low sun comes in under the cloud base from far away.
  • Rainbows appear where physics puts them. The curtains scatter sunlight the way real raindrops do: stand with the sun behind you, look at the rain, and you'll see the primary bow at about 42° from the point opposite the sun, with the fainter secondary bow outside it at about 51°, its colours reversed. The sky inside the primary bow is brighter, as in real life. Snow makes no rainbows. Catch one in the late afternoon, with a storm passing on the other side of the sky from the sun.

Light

  • Creatures and players that glow now light their surroundings. The glow after you respawn, a burning creature, or a skill like XSkills' Luminiferous now lights the area around you, softly from your upper body, and it stays on while you hold a torch.
  • Salty's Immersive Lanterns: the swinging lanterns from this mod now give off light like placed ones.
  • New setting: Light distance sets how far from you the renderer looks for lamps to light the scene. It's useful in big builds with lots of lights.

Fixes

  • Flickering while knapping, clay forming, forging fixed!
  • A creature you hit flashes red again, as in the base game.
  • Whitecaps no longer repeat in a visible tiled pattern.
  • Crash fixed: a crash after translocating or travelling far with Extended debug info on.
  • Safer crashes: if the game crashes in a world, your single player world is now saved before it closes.
  • Finder: found blocks no longer follow you around the world.
  • Setup no longer fails on a mismatched engine debug file, which tripped some players updating to 0.2.7.
  • Place on Slabs mod placement has been corrected.
  • Disappearing entities in heavily modded setups fixed - dynamic vertex budget

Performance

Faster bounce light, from NVIDIA's RTX Path Tracing 1.9

NVIDIA's latest RTX Path Tracing SDK (1.9) introduced a neat trick: trace the expensive bounce light at only some of the pixels each frame, and let the denoiser fill in the rest. VSPT now does the same, with a new Bounces traced setting (Advanced page):

  • Every pixel, three in four, or one in two. The pixels are chosen in a scrambled pattern that moves every frame, so each pixel still gets its bounce within a frame or two, and DLSS Ray Reconstruction blends it seamlessly.
  • Direct light, lamp light and everything DLSS needs are still traced at every pixel. Only the bounces after the first surface are thinned out.
  • On High, three in four pixels saves about 9% of the trace, for no difference I can see in game. Low and Medium use one in two, and Ultra keeps every pixel.

Default settings changes

If you use a quality preset (Low, Medium, High or Ultra), you'll pick these up automatically when you update. If you're on Custom, your settings are left as they are.

  • Bounces traced now depends on the preset: one in two on Low and Medium, three in four on High, every pixel on Ultra. This is where most of the speed-up on High comes from.
  • Cloud quality (new) depends on the preset too: Low, Medium, High or Ultra to match.
  • Cloud style (new) is Smooth. Crisp is there if you like sharper, wispier clouds.
  • Light distance (new) is 64 blocks, the same as before it was a setting.
  • Rain curtains are on, with Volumetric clouds.
  • Unchanged: your game's own Clouds setting. Volumetric clouds stay opt-in: set the game's Clouds to Volumetric to see them, and the rain and rainbows with them.

As always, bugs go here: https://github.com/unfocused-mods/vspt-issues

Question I made a bunch of leather, what can I use it for?

Over my first winter I got really focused on making leather and now I have more than 3 stacks of it. I've made myself some leather armour but then ran into the issue of having no idea how to use the rest of the leather.

Question (Poll) What items are in biggest demand, no matter how far you've progressed?

• Upvotes

Hello folks, I am nearing completion of a horror mod for the almost here holiday.

I am in need of some feedback on one aspect of the game. The rewards that come with a risk.

What category of items or specific items continue to be in high demand throughout your playthroughs?

What motivates you the most to venture into a dangerous cave or outside during a temporal storm?

If your answer is not on the poll, do feel free to share in the comments instead.

"And if you don't wanna?"

Well, have a nice Halloween.

Discussion How many play on 'pathetic' graphics, and why do I love it so much!

To put it bluntly, my computer is shit. 5gb and gets very loud and angry at anything even remotely decent. So to enjoy the game without much sacrifice to the mods I use (not alot, just some to help with a bad wrist) , turns down to pathethic graphics. And y'know what, I actually really like it this way. It has a very old school, crunchy 2000s computer game energy going for it. Plus the game now runs like a charm. Give it a try if you don't care for graphics!

Modding [Modding] What is the radius around the player in which the game spawns animals using 'runtime' (not worldgen)? - Even if view distance is set to max (1500)

I can't find definitively what the radius is. ChatGPT swears its 384, google AI said something different. 384 seems to be somewhat accurate but I can't prove it.
