I’m a barista and I really like my job, but today has totally made me reconsider my plan to move onto something new.
(Will be using they/them to refer to my coworker to maintain anonymity)
Today’s tuesday, which is usually means a slow shift, barring anything unusual happening. And it was pretty chill for the first half, I actually *finished* cleaning the espresso machine and washed all of our cups an hour early! It was shaping up to be a pretty good shift…
I must’ve jinxed it, because when 6 o’clock hit we got a trickle of customers coming in for drinks and sandwiches. It wouldn’t have been so bad if not for the fact my coworker handed me a note (they took an order over the phone) and did not communicate clearly what the customer ordered, so I made 1 strawberry banana smoothie when the customer wanted 1 strawberry *and* 1 banana, and unfortunately remaking that order set me back only 4-5 min, but it set me so far I got buried under tickets while my coworker was in the back making sandwiches.
I really wished we had another person on shift here :(
When my coworker finished with the sandwiches they came to the front to help me and immediately jumped into making drinks, thank god. But, when I finished correcting my smoothie order, I asked them where they were at (so I didn’t duplicate on accident) and they said, “just work on the next one” WHAT DO YOU MEAN NEXT ONE I DON’T KNOW WHAT YOU’RE MAKING
So I ask if they had made the first ticket on the left (there were like, 5+ tickets on the counter, there were more but I stab my tickets when I complete them so it’s not as though I was sitting on my butt doing nothing), and they were like “you didn’t make these?” NO I DID NOT MAKE THEM I WAS WORKING ON THE SMOOTHIE ORDER YOU BOTCHED
And it was right that moment a customer asked if her drink was forgotten because she’d been waiting awhile and I said I was working on it right then!! (I literally just started it) I felt really bad when I handed her her order and thanked her for waiting, but she gave me a sorta displeased face in response.
I also saw one of my favorite regulars walk through the door and after scanning the crowd decided to dip and leave ;_; It was probably for the best, but I hate to deprive him on what is his usual coffee order for the day (he works night shift)
I thought the storm had passed once we finished serving the last customer, so I immediately grab the next appliance I needed to clean and went to the kitchen to do so. I assume this will be the end of terrible string of fate I’ve found myself tangled in, but of course I’m wrong.
I get a pair of friends that are speaking another language with one another but order in english. One orders a hot latte, the other orders an iced one. One goes to the bathroom (single stall) and then their friend goes in while they pick up their order. The second one comes up to me and says she ordered an iced latte, and here is where I think the miscommunication happened. English is clearly not her first language, and I’m trying to tell her, yes there is one iced and one hot latte, but the friend who ordered the hot latte DRANK *their* iced latte leaving their hot one on the counter. I don’t know why the friend would order hot and drink cold when I had explicitly asked “hot or cold” when taking the order.
The customer could tell I was overwhelmed (I had my hands on my face and I was stressin’) and gave me a moment to collect my thoughts while I tried to explain the mix up. I don’t think she understood what I was trying to say, but clearly weren’t getting anywhere and more or less conceded the interaction and accepted the hot drink. Later as I was cleaning up I could hear the both of them make that noise you make when you finally understand something, so I can only hope they realized what was wrong. Right before they left she asked me a question and I thought she was going to apologize for being wrong, but instead one of them asked when the kitchen closed, I answered, and that was that. She did smile at me however, so I don’t think she was too upset about the earlier miscommunication.
I also had a customer come up to me after ordering on the kiosk and ask if it was possible to sub one leafy green for another and I point blank said no. But the puppy dog eyes she gave me won, and I said I would ask. I tell my coworker the customer wants arugula instead of lettuce, I look at them directly in the eye, but I honest to god don’t know if they internalized what I said. I walked back out and the customer looked at me expectantly and I said “yes” on reflex. I probably should’ve doubled down and said no earlier to save myself the trouble, but at this point I can only hope my coworker understood me and put arugula on that damn sandwich.
I’m starting to get a better gist of my coworker. They’re fast and clean well, but their communication SUCKS. Like PLEASE TALK TO ME. They keep to themself and are pretty quiet but when it comes to it LOOK ME IN THE EYES AND ANSWER ME jesus christ…
On top of this trainwreck, their partner hates me (has actually told me they hate me to my face), and I just know they’re gonna talk to their partner about the day we just had. Their partner is just an absolutely miserable person but after today I can see they’re made for each other. And that’s such a mean thing to say, but I just can’t see how you can work nearly a decade at this job with a personality like that unless you’re cut from the same cloth.
I love my job but I hate it here. My best friend says I should tell someone, but the problem is that my work bestie has a good relationship with both these people (she has mentioned the partner had pissed her off once tho and you don’t normally say that about friends, but ppl ur friendly with? maybe), my other coworker can keep her mouth shut and is definitely on my side, but she’s so young I don’t want to burden her with it, and the reason I work with these two problem ppl are because she’s no longer able to work her shifts with me. My manger is someone I trust, but I’m like 99.8% sure she has beef with the partner, and I don’t want to make this into a big thing.
Maybe I’ll bring it up to my other coworker who’s manger adjacent. She likes working with me and I’m fond of her too. My only worry about escalating this is that refusing to work with these two ppl means someone else has to take their shifts, and the default person who takes shifts is my work bestie, and she already works way over 40+ hours, it’s not really fair to her to have to pick up the slack.
That’s also the reason why I was postponing my job search. I was originally planning to leave earlier this year but didn’t because in this economy? But now that I’m a better place and have more confidence in myself as a person, I was thinking of moving on, only for the owner of the cafe to ask if I can take on more hours, because he’s opening up a new location. Management did hire three new ppl, but they all decided coffee wasn’t for them, so we’re stuck with the current pool of employees… and a good chunk of them left this past spring due to graduating high school.
I just need to get through tomorrow, my last shift of the week. I’m dreading the conversation my coworker’s partner is going to have with me. They’re always nitpicking and criticizing me. Like sorry I know I’m not perfect but your standards are WAY too high :( That’s a whole other can of worms, but I think I’ve run out of steam for this vent.
Cheers :/
