Mod Post Making the best of the snap election call as a community

From what I've seen, the election call is going over like a cactus colonoscopy. But I've been thinking about how we, a community of 40,000+ British Columbians (and perhaps a legion or two of bots not yet identified) can come together and be heard during this seemingly frivolous provincial election. We can either complain about this being an opportunistic, bad faith election call and/or that there are no candidates we truly support. Or we can view this as an opportunity and take advantage to advocate for meaningful change and make the candidates earn our support.

Every candidate should be earning our votes and campaign support by running on platforms that meaningfully address our core concerns. Obviously, we all face many urgent concerns right now and gaining a consensus over what they are and how to approach them might be in the same vein as the prickly proctology exam noted above.

Here is what I propose, since we have 1 month before the elections (final day is Oct. 24):

  • The community provides their feedback in a dedicated thread on their #1 election issue (assuming this approach is adopted)
  • We leave the thread open until this Sunday, September 27th
  • Top 3 to 5 most upvoted comments will be the key issues we will seek remedies for as a community (keeping in mind only so many questions can be asked and candidate time will be limited)
  • We will then develop questions and follow up questions to ensure the issues are meaningfully addressed (i.e., no avoidance/skirting the isssue/giving non-answers)

In parallel, I will reach out to representatives from all parties (from this list, once they register) and invite them to appear in r/VancouverJobs for separate individual AMAs where we as a community will ask them questions about how they will address our top 3 issues. I am also open to interviewing them directly (via video call) with questions posed by the community, if that is preferred (or another approach the community decides on).

We will then create a consolidated post with all the AMAs/interviews and sticky them in r/VancouverJobs until the election is done.

Yes, I recognize we have rule #3 about no politics. However, if we stay focused on issues, use a fair and democratic process to identify the most impactful, and invite candidates from all parties to appear here in the interest of collective job seeker advocacy, I think that's a valuable use of our power and influence as a community.

If you don't like the approach I'm proposing, please propose an alternative. Keep the discussion around this respectful and constructive. All constructive suggestions and feedback are welcome.

I believe we will have immense power as a community, if we can align on the objectives, outcomes, and approach in relatively short order.

Drop your constructive feedback below.

New Community Rule - No AI Training / Data Annotation Roles

The TL;DR of this rule is that r/VancouverJobs is a place of advocacy for Canadian job seekers. We will not support any efforts to further disrupt the job market or where exploitative worker practices are commonplace.

There needs to be more evidence of policies that will support the Canadian workforce as AI models become more advanced and disruptive across industries and protect digital workers from known exploitative practices.

If Canadian workers are training AI models under exploitative or predatory practices in the short-term only to replace them and others in the long-term, then it's time to go back to the drawing board. This is why we are drawing a line in the sand and boycotting AI training and data annotation roles.

If you have personally worked in one of these roles and have a story to share with the community, please share your first-hand experience below to raise awareness.

  • When there are many candidates who pass the initial screening, the People, Equity, and Culture team may conduct 15-30 minute phone screening calls.
  • The hiring committee will conduct first round interviews with selected candidates. Candidates will be sent the interview questions 48 hours in advance of their scheduled interview. Candidates are welcome, but not expected or required, to send any questions they have for the hiring committee in advance of the interview. These interviews usually occur 1-2 weeks after the application deadline.
  • The hiring committee may conduct a second round of interviews, which may include an assignment.
  • The People, Equity, and Culture team will conduct reference checks for the candidate to whom they intend to extend an offer. This process usually takes about 1 week.
  • The People, Equity, and Culture team will initiate a background check. This is intended to safeguard Equality Fund employees, grantees, and the organization. We recognize that some communities experience systemic over-policing. As such, only findings related to harassment, exploitation, coercion, sexual exploitation, fraud, abuse, or other findings specifically relevant to the duties of the role will be considered in relation to one’s eligibility for employment.
  • The People, Equity, and Culture team will send the selected candidate an Employment Agreement, which the candidate will have time to review and return.

Though we work to respond to all applicants, at times we may only be able to follow-up with those selected for an interview.

Advice for Structural Engineers Transitioning to Practice in Canada

Hi everyone,

I recently moved to Greater Vancouver from Mumbai, India, and I’m looking to establish my career in the local structural engineering industry.

I have nearly 10 years of experience in structural design, working on residential, commercial, institutional, and high-rise reinforced concrete buildings. My background includes structural analysis and design using ETABS, SAFE, and STAAD.Pro, foundation design, reinforcement detailing, construction drawings, structural assessments, and coordination with architects and contractors.

I’m currently pursuing my Engineer-in-Training (EIT) registration with Engineers and Geoscientists BC (EGBC) and am eager to learn Canadian codes, standards, and local engineering practices.

I’m open to opportunities such as Junior Structural Designer, Structural Designer, Structural EIT, or other suitable entry-level roles where I can contribute my existing technical experience while gaining exposure to Canadian projects. I’m also happy to connect with structural engineers, recruiters, and engineering firms in the Lower Mainland.

If you know of any firms hiring, have advice for internationally trained engineers entering the local market, or would be open to connecting, I’d really appreciate hearing from you.

Thank you!for sharing your experiences and insights!

We are looking for a design-minded, organized student to join our small team as a Junior Rhino Designer & Studio Assistant. This is primarily a Rhino and design-support role for someone interested in furniture, product design, interiors, architecture, or digital fabrication.

You will support our design workflow by preparing client proofs, making revisions to existing Rhino files, organizing project files, creating simple renders, and helping prepare production-ready documentation. You will also provide occasional hands-on shop support during busy production periods.

Schedule

This role is expected to be approximately 20–27 hours per week, with Monday to Thursday.

  • Experience with Illustrator, Photoshop, V-Ray, KeyShot, Fusion 360, Aspire, or similar software is an asset, but not required

Important to know

This is a junior design-support position. You will work with established templates, product systems, and guidance from our team. You will not be expected to independently solve complex custom furniture design, joinery, CNC programming, or final production decisions at the start.

Pre-Employment Criminal Background Checks

Is getting a background check with VPD the best/only local option (in Vancouver)?

Is "mybackcheck.com" a safe/secure/reliable online option? This is what the employer usually uses. Does anyone have experience with that website or know how much they charge?

Thank you

New HCA graduating end of November – open to relocating anywhere in BC for the right opportunity!

Hey everyone!
I'm about a month away from finishing my HCA certificate and I'm starting to look into job opportunities. I'm currently completing my clinicals, which wrap up by the end of November.
My preferred setting is assisted living, but I'm open to other environments as well. I know most places tend to start new HCAs on a casual basis, and I'm completely fine with that — I'm just eager to get my foot in the door and start gaining real-world experience.
I'm currently based in Vancouver, BC, but I'm willing to relocate to any town in BC for a good opportunity. So if you know of a facility in a smaller community or anywhere else in the province that's hiring, I'd love to hear about it!
If anyone has leads on openings, advice on where to apply, or can point me in the right direction, I'd really appreciate it.
Thanks in advance! 😊

How much should a beginner cleaner expect to make? And also if I’m afraid of spiders should I not take the job?

I potentially might be offered a job as a cleaner for a cleaning company in a residential buildings. But there’s two things I’m wondering. Debating if I should take the job if I’m afraid, but cleaning will be done in pairs always so. And also wondering how much should I expect to start for a wage as a beginner?

How does one get into tech sales?

I’ve been told you need to start as a SDR/BDR (development representative), but I don’t know where to find these roles, especially ones that hire entry level/no sales experience. I’ve looked on Indeed and very few jobs come up and everything on LinkedIn is just ghost jobs or jobs that have been reposted from weeks ago, with a ton of applicants already.

Does anyone know any companies that will train you? I’m willing to start at the bottom.

Thoughts on City Auxillary positions

Hello, looking to get some insights on picking an Auxillary role for the city. Currently, I am on a fixed term role till February with no hopes of getting anything else soon. Is it worth to quit and pick aux role instead? Any feedbacks from fellow applicants who have taken such roles would be much appreciated. Thanks

Help a near high-school graduate with future planning

Hello everyone, I am a Grade 12 student living in Surrey with a study visa. I plan to go to post-secondary but I don't even know anymore, a lot of adults who have a lot of experience in the work-force have told that the job market is totally shitfaced right now, is there a career path that I can take that is not only open with atleast a stable job outlook that is open for international students?

The search has been so hard for me, since a lot of a health pathways have been automatically blocked for me since I am an international student, I would appreciate any advice. My mind is open to any kind of work, I am okay physically and 88% avg student, I am open to any kind of work blue-collar, white-collar.. I have gotten so desperate looking for answers..

Especially since it is really late for me, I started my search since I was grade 9 (that was when I first moved here, people advised it would be hard as an immigrant). But things keep on changing and with the elections, I don't know what will change for me as an immigrant, I get so much stress and anxiety thinking about the future.

Please any help would be appreciated!
