news Ubuntu 26.10 Stonking Stingray officially released!

Thumbnail discourse.ubuntu.com
167 Upvotes

Ubuntu 26.10, codenamed “Stonking Stingray”, has now arrived. Building
on the foundations of Ubuntu 26.04 LTS, this release continues to
advance security, performance, and hardware support while introducing
new capabilities that look towards the future of Ubuntu. As always, these
improvements are the result of close collaboration between the Ubuntu
team, our community, and our partners. A huge thank you to all who
contributed.

Ubuntu 26.10 brings significant progress for security, and strengthens
the platform with the full adoption of Rust-based coreutils,
post-quantum-ready package signing, and expanded TPM-backed full-disk
encryption support. Enterprise authentication gains deeper integration
with Microsoft Entra ID, including password and multi-factor
authentication. Linux kernel 7.3 extends support for the latest hardware,
alongside new RISC-V desktop images and optimized amd64v3 installation
images.

On the desktop, GNOME 51 brings improvements to responsiveness,
accessibility, and usability, complemented by more consistent software
management and greater resilience under memory pressure. Ubuntu 26.10 also
introduces Myna, an opt-in, locally processed speech-to-text solution that
marks the first step towards a more natural, context-aware desktop
experience. With updated developer toolchains and expanded support for
accelerated AI workloads, Ubuntu 26.10 continues to evolve Ubuntu as a
secure, capable, and forward-looking open source platform.

news [AMA] Meet the Canonical Academy team on 17th September 2026 at 3:30 PM UTC

Hi r/Ubuntu!

On Thursday 17 September, we’ll be hosting Canonical’s first ever Ask Me Anything (AMA) session live to answer your questions about our new certification platform, Canonical Academy.

We’ll be here to discuss:

  • The behind-the-scenes of creating an exam
  • What does it take to be a Canonical Qualified SysAdmin?
  • How you can contribute as a Subject Matter Expert (SME), exam tester, and from the community

About the team:

  • Ishani is a Product Manager at Canonical, leading Canonical Academy and initiatives for Ubuntu Pro. Over the past two years, she has focused on shaping product strategy across enterprise software and open source learning initiatives, supported by her background in software engineering and management. Ishani has presented talks focused on Canonical Academy at the Ubuntu Summit, and remains dedicated to breaking down barriers in education, making technical exams more accessible to everyone.
  • Mauricio is the Curriculum Manager for Canonical Academy. From his technical foundation in aerospace engineering, he spent the last ten years as an instructional designer, building impactful learning and assessment experiences across numerous educational institutions and community spaces. He is driven by a passion for self-guided and informal learning, access to education, and strengthening the open source community. At Canonical, he leads the design, development, and improvement of exam content, collaborating closely with cross-functional engineering teams and SMEs to ensure that exams accurately measure industry-relevant skills.
  • As Academy Team Lead at Canonical, Adrianna directs program strategy, technical roadmaps, and psychometric standards for official Canonical Qualifications. A frequent open source speaker at industry events like SCaLE and the Ubuntu Summit, she brings deep technical experience from years spent in network engineering and infrastructure, as well as her work as an educator and curriculum architect. Adrianna is passionate about creating rigorous, accessible credentialing frameworks that enable self-taught practitioners and tech professionals worldwide to validate real-world skills and advance their careers.

Share your questions below and we’ll be answering them live during the AMA.

See you in the comments!

news Ubuntu 26.04, nautilus (Files) random crashes fixed.

Hi, all!

If you are using Ubuntu 26.04 LTS, and experiencing random Files app crashes (window disappears while you are trying to go into a subdirectory), and you are using double-click to open directories.

You are:

  • using double-click to open folders in Files app
  • on 26.04

Check out the fix for gtk4, which eliminates memory corruption. I triaged a heisenbug and drove it to a fix in Ubuntu 26.04; it is now available in resolute-updates.

sudo apt update && sudo apt install libgtk-4-1

The fixed version is 4.22.4+ds-0ubuntu0.1

EDIT 2: You may have the Files app already opened, but poisoned by memory corruption. To ensure you are free from crashes, you can reboot, or as an alternative, while not copying/moving files, run killall nautilus after the update of libgtk to exit all running instances.

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nautilus/+bug/2150297

P.S.: Not alone, but with a great part of the work of both GNOME and Ubuntu folks.
