Hi everyone,
I'm looking for some help diagnosing a strange and frustrating issue with my PC. I've been experiencing random black screens and system crashes, and I haven't been able to identify the cause.
My PC specs:
- GPU: ASUS ROG Astral GeForce RTX 5090 OC
- CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D
- Motherboard: ASUS ROG Crosshair X870E Hero (BIOS 2402)
- PSU: ASUS ROG Strix 1200W Platinum
- RAM: G.Skill Trident Z5 Neo 64GB (2×32GB) DDR5-6000 CL30
- SSD: Samsung 9100 PRO 4TB
- CPU Cooler: ASUS ROG Ryujin III 360 ARGB Extreme
- Case: Lian Li O11 Dynamic EVO XL
- Fans: Lian Li UNI FAN TL Wireless / TL LCD Wireless (120mm and 140mm)
- Fan Controller: Lian Li L-Wireless Controller
- Other components: Lian Li 8.8" Universal Screen, Lian Li Strimer Wireless 24-pin RGB cable, NZXT Internal USB Hub Gen 3
- Monitor: ASUS ROG Swift PG27AQWP-W (DisplayPort)
The problem
At random times, my monitor suddenly goes black and displays "DisplayPort No Signal". The PC becomes unresponsive and sometimes eventually reboots.
The really strange part is the timing:
- The issue often occurs once or several times shortly after turning on the PC.
- After a few crashes or restarts, the system can run perfectly fine for 15–20 hours straight, even during extended use.
- There doesn't seem to be a clear connection to GPU load or temperature.
Most important detail: it also happens in BIOS
I can turn on the PC, enter the ASUS UEFI BIOS, and simply leave it sitting there without booting into Windows.
The exact same black-screen issue can still occur while I'm in BIOS.
This makes me suspect a hardware, power delivery, or PCIe-related problem rather than Windows, NVIDIA drivers, or Armoury Crate.
Windows errors
When the issue occurs in Windows, Event Viewer reports:
nvlddmkm – Event ID 14
nvlddmkm – Event ID 153
GpuRcReset TDR occurred on GPUID:100
LiveKernelEvent 141
VIDEO_TDR_FAILURE (0x116)
Current configuration
The entire system is running at stock/default settings:
- No CPU or GPU overclocking
- EXPO disabled
- PBO disabled
- No custom voltage or frequency adjustments
- Motherboard BIOS updated to version 2402
- NVIDIA drivers clean-installed
The problem persists.
My questions
Has anyone experienced something similar with an ASUS ROG Astral RTX 5090, particularly on an ASUS X870E motherboard?
Could this be caused by a faulty GPU, an unstable 12V-2x6 power connection, the ASUS ROG Strix 1200W PSU, or a PCIe compatibility issue?
I'm particularly interested in hearing from anyone who experienced black screens even while sitting in BIOS, or crashes shortly after a cold boot followed by many hours of complete stability.
Has anyone actually identified the root cause or found a permanent fix?
I'd really appreciate any advice, troubleshooting suggestions, or experiences with similar hardware.
Thanks in advance!
