I understand this is an absolutely terrible job, and the colors don’t match the standard, the issue is, the standard fails the cable tester, I tried matching the colors and the counting was out of order, when they do match the order, one pattern that works for one cable doesn’t work for the other (these wires are almost 20 years old so they’ve faded a bit, even a foot above they’re faded) it’s incredibly frustrating as someone new to this, the wires are stiff too. I have cat5e wired all throughout the house, and the original electrician never finished the job, and terminated the cables incorrectly as well. There are keystone jacks are in every room though. The one in my bedroom will just randomly disconnect. I really despise doing this, im considering paying someone to do this but I am a bit ashamed of having to pay someone money to do what should’ve been a basic DIY job.

Yeah, im new at this, but it works!
About a month ago i finally had enough with my DECO mesh garbage system and bought a used Unifi gateway and some AP's. Im adding all the time, so its gonna be a mess for a while. Im hardwiring what i can, and learning a ton.
Currently working on a home assistant/media server setup with an old laptop. this is a deep rabbithole.
Somethings i learned right away that werent obvious to a noob:

Looking to run some cat6 around the house for PoE camera setup and I am absolutely dreading having to run the cable from the soffit and in to the attic. The pitch of my roof is pretty low, which means the interior space around the edges is tiny. Crawling around the interior is not fun. I ran some romex down an exterior wall last year and it damn near killed me.
Any tips for getting this cable pushed far enough in to where I could actually reach it?

A friend bought 2 of these cameras.. I'm assuming from Temu. There are no brand markings or qr code no manualor anything. it's completely blank with just a reset button and SD card slot. But when I put it into the light socket there are no voice prompts just a ding afterafewseconds, it has its own unlocked wifi network but no connection.. so with Not knowing which app is designated for these cameras are they a waste of time or

Hello, not sure if this is the right place, so apologies if not.
I have set up a DNS sinkhole for my mum's network using AdGuard Home on a Pi. Today i noticed some worrying traffic which has been going on for about 6 days. There are a LOT of requests from external (internet) clients all asking to resolve a single site - xxx [dot] heimaoip [dot] com - about 5.5million requests in 6 days. See the pic.
I noticed that I neglected to whitelist only the internal clients, which i'll admit was a mistake, but i assumed the ISP (Virgin Media) router's own firewall would be blocking all inbound traffic. I checked and the ISP firewall is apparently turned on, but there is no way to see any detail.
My assumption (and i'm really hoping) is that the ISP has seen a DNS server, and has opened UDP/53 to allow requests though, OR that it was always open, and some probing bot has found it and has redirected traffic to the AdGuard. Either way, this is VERY shit but i kind of expect it from Virgin Media.
Needless to say, I have now whitelisted only LAN clients and firewalled every device using their own OS firewalls
What do you think? could my assumption be correct, or has something been compromised?
Cheers

I am get 1GB fiber soon and I’m just curious on what to use for ethernet to go from house to garage underground. It is just under 200 feet and I’ve read fiber is a better option than copper for lightning and fire hazards or something. It will more than likely be in conduit. What is needed to then in the garage have multiple devices connected? Can the devices in the garage be ran off a normal copper ethernet or do those have to be fiber as well if I do fiber? Thanks

Hi all,
I’m moving to a new place that is wired for Ethernet and has two closets where many Ethernet cables come together. Upstairs and downstairs.
In the downstairs closet there are two Ethernet cables both labeled “TO DEMARC”. I believe i can trace them up to the upstairs where they are labeled “TO DOWNSTAIRS CABINET”.
I’m trying to figure out where the FIOS modem should go. I think the previous owners had comcast cable internet. There is only coax cable in the upstairs closet.
Does this all point to that I should install my FIOS modem upstairs? Does “TO DEMARC” downstairs mean that the other end of this cable is outside? Not that THIs end of the cable is?
The Ethernet routing is a mess and not labeled so I want to keep things as close to how they were as I can.

I'm new to using a punch down jack. Just terminated my first cable and need to do a bunch more. Before I'm too far down the path, could you please check if my work looks okay?
I'm certainly not an expert, but have only terminated to regular connectors before in a pass through patch panel.
Many thanks.

Hello Reddit, so this is a post because I'm trying to get some information on how to set up my home network.
So, to give you some information, this is a five person household. Two of the people download and play video games. Everybody streams and usually three or four people on it at a time. While I know my setup might still be overkill for what I need, I have a close to 3,000 square foot house that's three stories with a basement and upstairs as well as an outdoor area that gets low connection. I also operate a home lab, eventually with pihole, but currently with jellyfin (and 20 something other services)
I was thinking about getting like a ubiquity or unify setup (not sure if it is overkill, but its what i have gathered from other reddits) where I have three wired access points in the house, and one wireless access point outside.
Are there recommendations for me, as to what i should get, that keep latency down and ensure little to no speed degradation (aside from the outdoor AP)
I also saw that I would want a network switch with power over ethernet, so i only have to run 1 wire to each of my wired APs. (So recs for this would be greatly appreciated too)
Thank you all in advance!

We live in a rural location in the UK, and – to our disbelief when we were purchasing – fortunately have FTTP! This is great, 99.9% of the time, however when it is not, our rural location (in particular being at the bottom of a narrow valley) means when there are issues nearby (fallen trees, in this latest case a car which crashed into a utility pole) we have no mobile signal in the house either.
I am looking for something that (ideally) integrates with our existing system, and can – inexpensively – be used as a stop-gap for reasonably fast speeds (I work from home, also streaming services) when we do need it. Currently I have to wander up out of our valley, and perch on a bench at the top of our land and then tether to my phone for somewhat useful 5G.
Our current network setup is using Deco Mesh routers, with ethernet backhaul which works fantastically, we installed this because we have thick stone walls but there was already ethernet to every room installed by the previous homeowner. My initial thought was getting their 5G-enabled router, but I don't think there is anywhere I can put it that has both sensible access to power, and enough signal to actually work, and it is also not rated for use outdoors. I have also heard good things about Starlink, but I don't wish to put any more money in Musk's grubby little hands, and it's also significantly pricier than our FTTP (and slower).
So I have questions, with the caveat that it is not worth us spending thousands on this issue.
It's obviously not the end of the world to be without for a few days, but our concern is that with the government's warnings of potential storm damage this winter we may be without any form of communication, or means of working for weeks!

Hello, failry new to the networking stuff and living in a new place. I have an Asus RT-AX86U-Pro router that works with the provided Modem from Quantum Fiber. I got the VLAN settings correct. however at random points in the day it loses connection to the internet. I cant tell if its an IP change or something else. I tried to setup an automatic restart but that has not helped me much. Restarting the router manually fixes this issue every time.
Is there a config im missing to accomadate an IP change or is this possibly something else? I had been using this router at my previous home on Pulse *(local Fiber company) and never had much issue with its relaibility.

So i have had 3 Tivo Bridge Plus hooked up in my house working wonderful for 6 years now.
I upgraded my Fiber to 5g, so I figured I could upgrade my moca for faster net.
My main box has a splitter (Adoreen 4-Way Coaxial Cable Splitter, 10-2602MHz Mini Bi-Directional Digital Signal RG6/RG59 Coax Indoor&Outdoor for CATV, Satellite, Antenna, MoCA, Internet, Modem + Screwdriver-1 in 4 Out Ports)
With a POE (MoCA Filter with Weather Seal – Coaxial Point of Entry (PoE) Filter for Secure MoCA Network and Signal Isolation – Waterproof Outdoor Compatible – Supports MoCA 2.5, Cable TV & Internet) attached, The splitter (which is outside the house) runs to the living room, my room and my partners.
The main MOCA is attached in the living room with the ATT Fiber router.
I just swapped out the MOCAs to ScreenBeam ECB7250, upgraded the splitter and POE to the above.
All of them have flashing COAX light and drop the internet to our PC every few minutes.
Where did I go wrong?

I read another post from three months ago where someone had a similar issue, although it was closed, so there weren't that many comments. The last comment said most of this community would be able to solve the issue if OP would have posted their site.
So here's mine: www.localclientsnow.com
Situation: it seems to only open on certain phones or when you're on a VPN.
- I can open it on my phone with no VPN.
- But I can't open it on my computer unless I have the VPN on.
I've never had this issue where it says it can't connect. Claude keeps telling me my ISP has my site blocked. It wasn't blocked like an hour and a half ago, though.
----------------------------
What I did leading up to this:
1. A little context of what happened prior to this. I was working with Claude like I always do, except I'm at 99% of my weekly limit, so I switched over to Codex in the terminal.
2. I thought Codex was about to make some simple changes and push and merge it live.
3. I went to load my site, and ever since then, it's had a connection error.
* Although I don't really relate it to Codex at all because my friend could not open it earlier today from the same error. We thought that his VPN or security system was blocking our site.
I just bought this domain from Porkbun in the last 48 hours, so I'm thinking maybe it's because of that. Although I own over 50 domains and I've built over a hundred client websites and never had this happen once.
ANY HELP IS APPRECIATED!

First of all, not a techy person, but my IT guy at work used to tell me I knew just enough to be dangerous.
Are any of the wires/cords shown in the pic an internet/fiber connection? This is in our basement and I’m almost positive we had a modem connected there when we moved in 19 years ago. We have Brightspeed fiber now with an older Eero mesh system. Our modem/router is on the first floor but I hate the location! I just upgraded to Eero Pro 6E and would love to move the main modem/router to the basement when I upgrade the mesh. Is this possible?
Sorry if this is a dumb question and thanks in advance for any help you can offer!

So I had a new fiber installation in my flat. We had a fiber-to-apartment connection, recieved the internet via twisted cables to the modem and it was all working fine. Then our ISP decided we needed an ONT connector and direct fiber into the flat and they installed it. But for some reason I get ping spikes all the time. Before and after I used the same ethernet cable, same PC and even the same software. I ran a "ping -t" on the background while I was gaming and I got the spike on both the game and "ping -t" command at the same time. I even get ping spikes early in the morning. Could it be this installation of fiber-to-ONT causing the ping spikes? Do I need to call the technician to reinstall it? Or is it probably an ISP related crowding issue?
TLDR: Could this install in the pic be the source of the ping spikes after fiber installation?

Hello! I have a TP Link RE450 - then wired to my PC, I get roughly 150mb to my pc, but my plan is 1gb.
I am not in a position to wire through my house.
But I would like to upgrade, am I better off to get a stronger tp link or upgrade my router ? My router is the standard Zyxel router that came from my provider.
Thanks !

Over the last 3 days or so I've noticed a lot of lag spikes across counter strike and wardogs. I've updated my Lan driver, used sfc and dism tools on windows and now I'm wondering if it could be my home network. i getting D and C ratings on stabilitytest.io and I'm just wondering if this is about average or if i should be aiming higher.

Hello everyone,
I’ve taken up a project to install a local surveillance system at my own home.
The plan is to install three PoE cameras and link them to an NVR.
These are reolink cameras, which have dangling ethernet jacks.
After some initial research, I determined that I needed to distinguish between Ethernet cable that’s used for running in walls and Ethernet cable for short distances (patch cable).
so, i got some tooless jack connectors, a spool of Ethernet, a bunch of patch cables, and a wall plate and mount.
I cut a length of Ethernet for a run from my front door to my office where the network equipment lives.
on one end of the run, i added a jack connector that’ll fit into the wall plate nicely. from there, a patch cable will link it to the NVR.
here’s where I’m confused: how am i supposed to connect the wall Ethernet to the camera (female)?
should i add another tooless jack connector to the opposite end of the run and then use a patch cable to unite it with the camera?
The run from the front door is meant to go down into crawlspace (attached to ceiling) then come up the wall in the office.
I guess what’s throwing me is this notion that patch cable down doesn’t belong in the wall.
Any advice would be appreciated.
Thank you!
Edit: thank you all for your input. Trying to respond to everyone. Really appreciate it. Need a little time to make sense of it.

My wife and I have been having internet connectivity issues.
We had an Eero Mesh network set up in our 2 bedroom townhome, which was working amazing.
My parents have a much larger home and I decide to switch our mesh network with theirs, as they have the Nighthawk mesh routers with ethernet plug-in ports.
When we set it up, we noticed that there have spikes, regardless of us being plugged in directly to the routers or on wifi only, which is awkward because before this, with our eero setup, we never dropped in quality.
Performed some speed tests and we get so much more down/upload speed it's baffling, more than we did with the eero setup. But the spikes in ping/latency are so random that I just don't know what to do. Can anyone provide me with any advice?
Edit: Models are;
Nighthawk AX3000 Dual-Band Mesh Wi-Fi System (Model: MK73S-200NAS)
eero 6 Dual-band Mesh Wi-Fi 6 System (Model: M110311)
