Discussion An update from the 44-year-old SF6 beginner —135 tracked matches later, I'm still here!
Hey everyone!
A while ago, I posted here as a 44-year-old beginner wondering whether I should really give Street Fighter 6 a serious try.
A lot of you encouraged me to go for it, shared advice, and reminded me that age doesn't have to stop anyone from learning a fighting game.
Well... I listened. 😄
And I thought it was time for a little update.
I'm still playing Ryu, Classic Controls, and I've made it from Rookie to Bronze.
I've also started keeping proper records of my Ranked matches. Here are my current numbers:
135 tracked matches
- 67 wins
- 67 losses
- 1 draw
- 175 rounds won / 167 lost
Just to be clear, these are the matches I've tracked since I started recording my progress, not every match I've ever played.
And the funny thing is, my latest session perfectly describes my experience so far.
I started with two wins, then lost four matches in a row. For a moment, it felt like I'd forgotten everything I'd learned.
Then somehow I managed to finish with four consecutive wins.
Two wins. Four losses. Four wins.
Welcome to Street Fighter, I guess. 😂
I'm still making plenty of mistakes. My reactions aren't always great, I sometimes panic under pressure, and I definitely have a lot to learn about defending against certain characters.
But I'm beginning to recognize situations that would have completely confused me a few weeks ago. And every now and then, something I've been practicing actually works in a real match.
That feeling is pretty addictive.
My long-term dream is still to reach Master with Ryu. I know I'm nowhere near that level yet, and I have no idea how long it will take.
But I'm not in a hurry.
I'm enjoying the process, including the losses.
So I mainly wanted to say thank you to everyone who encouraged me in my original post. You helped convince me to give this game a real chance, and I'm glad I did.
And to anyone else starting fighting games in their 30s, 40s, 50s or beyond: don't let your age be the reason you never try.
See you in Ranked! 👊

Highlight (in-game) Noticed my opponent's habits, and decided to bait with a shimmy, it's simple but I'm proud of myself for it.

Highlight (in-game) 1 year of Terry only: Gold 3 → Platinum 1. Platinum is humbling me
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Title says it all. A year ago I posted here when I first picked up Terry: Me as terry a year ago Back then I was Gold 3. Since then I’ve stuck with him exclusively, learned a lot of the game’s fundamentals, and made it to Platinum 1. I’m at around 100 hours now, playing on and off over the past year.
Since it’s a mirror match: I’m the Terry in the DriveTech Wear outfit (player name Xernoba, on the left side).
Loving the game so far, but I’m not gonna lie, Platinum has been a real wall. Getting here took a while, and it’s getting tough to keep improving.

Highlight (in-game) When you're too stubborn to quit in the battlehub...
This is the result of me playing 9 games with a 1843 MR player as a 1450 MR. Unsurprisingly, I lost all them (except 1)
Ngl it is kinda crazy the gap in skill between each MR rank, some games it felt like I couldnt do anything, Ive won sets again 1600s and it felt pretty even for the most part, but 1800 and above is just crazy with how amazing the playera are

Discussion I LOVE using E Honda !!
- Ryu Main
- Slowly getting the entire cast to Master Rank
- I reluctantly thought to myself "I should just get it over with and get E Honda out of the way......"
* Now E Honda might be my favorite character to use. He's a good balance between skill, degeneracy, and playful gimmicks.
* I never feel like I'm at a disadvantage against 90% of the cast when using E Honda aside from playing against Guile and Zangeif
* For some reason my skill set translates the best to E Honda and I have gotten my highest MR using him ( 1790 MR )

Rank UP! Finally Made it to Platinum After placement matches [FULL STORY]
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
This is a repost of my earlier post to where I had a screenshot but I didn’t fully explain what happened, or in my case, it was a low-effort post, so I brought proof
So, as stated, I’ve been playing SF6 for three years, right? Beforehand, my old main character used to be Ryu for a long time since the SFIV days, on the 360.
Fast forward to 2023, when the game came up, I used to pick so many characters, but I was never deep into ranked until about a year later, which was when I decided to sink some hours in. And so, for what felt like an eternity, I was a Bronze-Level player at best, with Ken being the closest choice since he’s similar to Ryu in a way, and I’ve been hardstuck for about a year now with the dude. However, I managed to get to Silver which was my highest rank at one point with Alex and Yasmine when they first came out, through placement matches.
Okay, getting a bit off track here, sorry…long story short, my main account carries that yellow card for a while, to where I could barely get matches, and even if I did, they were against Modern players from overseas, due to the lag on my end. But thankfully I moved so the connection isn’t terrible this time. However, this forced me to pivot to my alt account, to where I switched the button layout, picked Ryu last night and got to work at the lab.
In short, all I managed to do was to pick up on timing, where the opponent tries to go for an air attack, and I’d hit ‘em with a HADOUKEN (though I’m still learning the Shoryuken anti-air, and that alone is tricky considering my inputs), then I’ve began to do more throw escapes frequently, guessing high-low frame mixups, while adding in some High Blade Kick counters without relying too much on accidentally spamming the Shin Shoryukens to finish them off.
And so, after 9 quick yet close placement sets, I came across this Viper player who was at a Gold rank, and we went toe-to-toe, hitting anti-airs, throw escapes, Drive Impacts, you name it. At one point, I slowly figured out her pattern, which is why I’ve been learning on the fly (yes, I’m that kind of player these days) on how to counter some of her stuff. So, after some extra patience, timing and damage, there it was, that Platinum rank badge popping up at my screen, despite losing the set (I believe it was 1-2), and mind you, the rank up was during my first loss against her in the second match, and that player managed to win the set soon after, I was feeling that hyper rush of adrenaline or whatever, even though I tried not to let it get to me, but it did, and I dropped back to Gold-5. Still a nice feat though, since I’ve never made it to Gold either.
And there you go, my entire story of how it all happened.

Help / Question Is this a guaranteed KO or am I missing something? I believe I covered all options, and jump doesn't escape either (see explaination in the post body)

Edit: 2MP > DI is throwable. I found another route, see my comment!
Original post:
On the first combo I go for the DRc because if I go for H.Dima>DR>4HP>H.Gladius I cannot find a killing combo after the heavy stun with the usual safe heavy stun sequence (DR>5LK>DRc>2MP>DI). Maybe I could if I went for the same DR>5MP>2MP>DI as in the video, but if that worked, it would be another guaranteed kill anyway so it doesn't invalidate this one.
Here I go for DR>5MP instead of DR>5LK>DRc>2MP>DI because I have not enough drive for that. At worst it leads to a trade hit that I can follow up with 6HK>DI. If he blocks 5MP, then 2MP is a space trap so I'll always be able to DI. And if I were in CA range, I could go for the less drive costly first combo and then guarantee the kill with the safe heavy stun combo.
Am I missing something? I'm not very confident that I actually covered all gaps.

Discussion Ken and Ryu (SF 2026 versions) Spoiler
I enjoyed the new movie way more than I thought I would. The Ken/Ryu relationship was the heart of the film and easily my favorite part.
I noticed one thing I found interesting. In the beginning of the film, they say Akuma was jealous of his brother Gouken and that he turned to Dark Hado in order to be stronger than him.
At the end of the film it's revealed that Ryu sabotaged his own brother (Ken) out of jealousy as well, and turned to the Dark Hado to gain the power needed to win the first tournament.
This is some really interesting stuff to me. It feels kinda like Star Wars jedi lore in a way, with generations echoing each other but with slight variations.
Usually in game lore Ryu is the more powerful of the two because he's dedicated and focused. I sometimes think he suffers from boring perfect game protagonist syndrome (see also: Liu Kang) but the new film adds some layers to his character (and Ken's).
In this movie universe, is Ken potentially the stronger of the two when there's no Dark Hado around and no sabotaging or mind games? Is Ryu stronger like in the games? Or are they actually just equals who can't see past their own insecurities?
What do you guys think?

Help / Question Watched the movie today and I have a question.
There was this guy who had blond trapezium shape haircut and he was the air force commander I believe, so this guy calls someone and asks them to do something. Who did he call to? and I didn't see anything related to what he said later in the movie.
Disclaimer- I don't know a thing about street fighters series but I know it's a game.

Help / Question Is there some trick to timing oki setups consistently?
For example; Blanka's Coward Crouch into Wild Lift (launcher) in the corner into Blanka Chan bomb.If timed correctly, Blanka will be at a maximum of +5, but you can easily be slower and get +3-+5.
I have tried practicing this in match and training mode as I have played Blanka over a couple of months, I can only really get the perfect +5 maybe 75% of the time.
+5 is really important because of his 9F 4Mk. If you get any less than +5 you will lose to wake up 4F instead of getting a trade combo.
Wild lift is interesting because I believe the buffer window starts exactly when Blanka's feet touch the ground, you even hear a noise when this happens, but I think a big problem is that the Blanka chan input is down, down + punch. It's awkward because you have to press and release the same button with the same finger quickly, and you cannot time it by piano'ing between two fingers like you can with other inputs.
I was also wondering if anyone knows of a trick to test my inputs when buffering out of the blanka chan, if I get a +5 chan correctly, but screw up my buffered 4MK, I can't tell because the frames in training mode disappear when you do a new move.
Something annoying/amusing about this Blanka setup specifically is blanka visually looks like he should be super negative when doing this setup, so if the opponent doesn't know I should be +5, they pretty often spam wakeup jab, which will lead to me losing way more often due to me misstiming it.
