Megathread Subreddit Rules Update/Clarifications and Feedback Megathread

Hi all,

We've updated our subreddit rules to expand on our "no genAI" position, and (more significantly) have created a wiki page with clarifications and guidance.

Please use this megathread to give feedback or ask questions on these rule updates.

The actual changes are all relatively minor, but the explanations are not things we've formally elaborated on like this before outside of a few rare instances (like how we wanted to handle Pathfinder2e content in this subreddit).

Reddit enforces a character limit on the actual rules, so they are inherently brief. I think generally folks here understand that rules text will always require a lot of judgement calls. Discussions are complicated. The hope is that that these clarifications and guidelines are a useful reference for all involved; people posting/commenting, people reporting violations, and our moderating team can all look at the guidance and work from a shared understanding regarding the intent of a rule.

A few things were explicitly changed, though, either in the rules text or as part of drafting clarifications:

  1. The "no generative AI" rule has been promoted from just being part of the broader "Rule 5: Post content of quality" into its own rule and now clearly calls out software built with genAI code/art. This part is consistent with how we've enforced the no AI rule, so it's really not a change in policy, just in clarity. What is new is that we're also explicitly banning posts or discussions advocating for, instructing on, or primarily about the use of AI. It's explained in the clarifications, so I won't go into all that here, but we won't enforce it on this specific post for the purposes of letting people freely give feedback on this change (as it is hard to construct an argument that we have gone too far in banning AI discussions without also defending AI use, to some degree, in the process).
  2. The guidance on art posts brings some new restrictions where things weren't often clear, and enforcement will be tighter here than previously. Hero Forge/generic tool art is not allowed. Art credits must be clear. Art posts must not directly reference or solicit commissions in the post title or body (but may link to information in a follow-up comment). Additional clarification on the required applicable information tying it to the game (particularly for non-character art, like maps) is now provided. Explanations regarding how art rules overlap with other rules restrictions (no genAI, no nudity/explicit/gory art) has now been provided under the art clarification.

Edit:
To clarify, the art rule clarification changes aren't intended to be retroactive - if it was posted before today, we don't need to go back and remove them.

Edit2:

Please read the clarifications for more. The above is very much a summary, and rule 9 has over 1000 words of clarifications/guidance on what constitutes genAI content for the subreddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/Starfinder2e/wiki/rules/#wiki_rule_9.3A_no_generative_ai

I'll check back on this thread later. I appreciate the feedback! At least one additional point of clarification that will likely go into an update with wording based on these discussions (here and in r/Pathfinder2e's version of this post) around the definitions of how far back in the chain of tools/workflows before it gets to the "content" for a post, particularly for software: It's really about the creation of the direct software product (or the product itself, if it has genAI features). Similarly, just because Photoshop or your development IDE has genAI features you didn't use doesn't mean it's suddenly genAI content. It's about your workflow for creation.

Edit3:
I've removed a bunch of comments (both pro and anti-AI) for violating rule 2. Please be constructive in your feedback and skip the personal attacks, thanks.

Discussion What if Golarion is still there?

I had a thought the other day while reading the Gap Touched heritage in Galactic Ancestries. It’s shown from that heritage, and from the gap touched Witchwarper that the Gap isn’t just an event that happened in the past and is now over. It’s a continuous effect that’s still altering everyone in the galaxy’s perception of reality.

Individuals touched by the gap become hard for normal people to perceive. Records about them are mysteriously erased or lost, and many times even their friends or family forget they ever existed Some people, like Gap touched Witchwarpers, can weaponise this effect to become effectively invisible, and to write themselves out of their enemy’s memory and sight. Kind of like the Silent from Dr Who.

So what if that same perception filter is happening to the entire planet of Golarion? What if it’s still exactly where it always ways, but impossible for anyone offworld to see or remember?

Player Builds Breaking the ghost curior

• Upvotes

Going back over it's feats, it seems to be a strength/wis build (leading to athletics and survival/iniative). It builds on you being a tactical positioner, rather than damage boosting.

The Adrenaline rush "Danger gives you a rush. For 1 minute, you ignore the encumbered condition and gain a +2 circumstance bonus to your Athletics checks. While you are not encumbered, you gain a +5-foot circumstance bonus to your Speed for the duration."

Adds speed and a lovely bonus to athletics checks. The route for that seems to me to be an Armor Storm Soldier, who gets to be toting around a heavy gun (or two handed cc/weapon), and doing the athletics checks without a free hand.

Soldiers are already pretty tanky, and being able to use 'treasure on my heart' to shunt damage into any bulky object you are carrying (and boy can you carry a lot of them) seems great.

Discussion Comfortmoji vs Repairative Nanites (or why is Divine worse at healing)

Both level 1 spells. But in comparison, Comfortmoji is flat out superior.

name Comfortmoji Repairative Nanites
tradition Occult, Primal Divine, Primal
range 60 30
duration 1 minute 1 minute
target 1 creature 1 creature
effect fast healing 2 fast healing 1
heighten (1) fast healing +2 fast healing +1
special transfer to another creature none

So, other than a Primal caster being foolish to pick the nanites, Divine just get the flat out worse healing option. Is this intentional to have the class based difference or are you just paying a healing tax for having a spell that doesn't look silly?

Advice Fabrication Lab, Fabricator feat and Creator Capsules questions

I'm very new to Starfinder 2e, and Pathfinder in general. I'm currently playing a Mechanic that I want to be good at repairing/crafting things, but I have some questions:

  1. In the Fabrication Lab entry, it says "A crew member using this expansion bay can Craft and Repair items on board their starship without having to spend time to set up". Does this mean you do not need to spend the "2 days of work setting up, or 1 day if you have the item's formula" listed in the Craft activity, or is it merely flavor text that actually refers to the use of Creator Capsules?

  2. Since it says "A fabrication lab includes commercial creator capsules", does this mean these are always stocked (and you therefore don't have to buy them, since expansion bays aren't bought)?

  3. In the Fabricator feat, it says "reducing the materials used based on the result of your Crafting check". I can't find any reference to reducing the materials used anywhere else. As far as I can see it's always the full price of the items in UPBs. Or is this simply referring to the fact that if you're not successful, you're also not expending the UPBs/Creator Capsules?

  4. The Commercial Creator Capsule says it takes "24 hours of work" to set up and complete. Does this mean it actually takes longer than a normal Crafting check, since it's listed in "hours of work" rather than 1 day (and you have to sleep/rest in between)?

  5. Even if the Commercial Creator Capsules only take 1 day, what is the advantage over regular crafting? Regular crafting takes just as long when you have the formula (which you must also have for using Creator Capsules) at the same price. Is the advantage supposed to be that you can use UPBs and are therefore not reliant on being in a settlement with the right materials?

Discussion starship Heading and Rotate Armament

Similar to vehicles, you track which direction each starship is facing, called its heading. However, because the sensor map is a 1D line, there's only two options. Now here's what heading does:

A starship is off-guard to attacks made from the opposite direction of the starship’s heading. Starships in the same zone always treat each other as being in the direction of their heading. Specific rules and actions might have different results depending on starships’ headings.

That's it. (There's a whole paragraph about your starting heading when an encounter begins, but it's just "use common sense and GM discretion".) The basic actions while helming a pilot's console --specifically Boost Thrusters and Change Heading-- clearly mention that you move in the direction of your heading and change that heading separately.

i couldn't really find anywhere else heading comes up, but the ordinance hinges upgrade for gunneries lets you attack "in any direction, ignoring the starship’s heading" ...when neither starship weapons nor the gunnery itself mention heading at all. Ordinance hinges have no other benefit. And using a starship weapon isn't even a special station action, the gunnery just passively grants regular attacks the station trait (if you helm the gunnery and use starship weapons installed on it, oc).

(Rotate Armament (the action ordinance hinges gives you) is also just kinda odd since it lasts a single turn, i guess you're then forced to rotate back as a free action. idk why artillery would snap back.)

TLDR / My questions for you: Did i just miss the RAW for "you can only fire forwards"? Would you allow some weapons to be mounted backwards by default? How would you track firing arcs in tactical starship combat? Do you just not bother, and delete ordinance hinges?

Hi Everyone,
Hephaistos is an online digital toolset for Starfinder (both 1E and 2E). The Starfinder 1E version has been actively developed and maintained for the last five years. Hephaistos for Starfinder 2E, or just Hephaistos 2E for short, is built from the ground up to support the second edition of the game. The website has a new release every fortnight, and today Hephaistos 2E has been updated with the following improvements and fixes:

  • Added archetypes, armor, shields, weapons, grenades and upgrades from Tech Core.
  • Added and updated Animal Companions, Robot Companions, Customizations and Familiar abilities from Tech Core.
  • Fixed skill modifiers for familiars being calculated incorrectly as 3 + level + spellcasting attribute modifier, of the larger of 3 + level or spellcasting attribute + level.
  • Fixed innate spells granted by the Verdant Psychic Lashunta ancestry feat being shown as having -1 uses per day.

Advice Best class to utilize Fan Dancer in Starfinder environment

I was searching for a way to use two fighting fan for fan dancer then I remember that Starfinder also have a fan weapon, Thermal Dynafan. Which is a lot better than regular fighting fan, higher damage dice, fire and cold damage and twin trait which is perfect for fan dancer. The downside is it’s an advance weapon.

This got me thinking, what class combo would go well using fan dancer? The no brainer option would be striker operative, you get expert in thermal dynafan and surprisingly a lot of option to get up close and personal. I wonder if there’s any other class that would go well with thermal dynafan and fan dancer?

Table Talk I finished GMing my first 1-20 SF2E campaign tonight. Here's the party.

Ran from October 11th, 2025 to October 24th, 2026. The group started with Guilt of the Grave World and went through homebrew for levels 6-20. It was a wild ride. Tech Core released right as they hit level 20 so 95% of the campaign relied solely on content from Player Core & Galaxy Guide (some gear from Absalom Station near the end too).

Feel free to ask me whatever. It was certainly an interesting experience running a full campaign when the system is so new.

Also, the art for Sanhesia was done by MoonThighz, and the art for Valyenn/Elrick was done by mo-the-half.

(Update): Thanks for all the questions folks. Just woke up and will be AFK for a few hours but will jump on this evening to answer questions.

Arts & Crafts [OC Art] Double Feature: Hot Pocket - Ysoki Mine Mechanic and Dr. Pennybun - fungus leshy-possessed Mi-go Technomancer

Hot pocket was my 1st Starfinder character back in 1st edition, while Pennybun was thought up due to mi-go falling under the fungus family.

Mine exocortex fits really well with Hot Pocket's theme, while Pennybun temporarily alters allies with her magic as a form of advertising for her more permanent surgical procedures (she has release waivers now!).

Discussion Aerial Hologram + Roly-Polygon

What happens?

  1. No Stride. Stuck floating in the air, because you can't "roll".

  2. Stride, but counts as normal movement without hover trait. (since it's never said that it adds the trait)

  3. Stride and you have hover trait.

  4. Fly, even though Fly is different than Stride.

Player Builds Technomancer Subclass help

So, I'm making a SRO Technomancer.

I'm designing them to be semi healing, using a Waspslicer for some injections on teammates.

My question is, should I go DPS++ or Vyper. DPS++ will let me make healing shots from very far away, as well as dish out damage when no one needs any healing. Vyper let's me temp craft healing spell gems, which have much, much better healing than Medikits.

Free Archetype is enabled, so I was considering Pharmacologist dedication for those temp medikits.

For reference, my party consists of Melee Soldier, Bombard Soldier, Melee Solarian, Guns Blazing Envoy, and Precog Witchwarper

What do you all think?

Advice Overwhelming Strike and Subordinate Actions Rules?

I'm currently building a melee Operative for a mini campaign. and I'm wondering whether something like Weakning Shot would work with Overwhelming Strike. My initial though was no, since it calls out a capital S Strike and this conflicts with my understanding of the subordinate action rules, but most of my party members and even the GM are pretty sure it would work.

We are all actually pretty experienced with the system, but has us at an impasse, so uhh Chat, Help!

EDIT: Thank you all, resolved.

Discussion How do the planes react to the first ones?

If the first ones are destroying realities how are the denizens of the planes reacting to that?

Also, do we know if each reality has its own copy of the planes or are the planes unique per reality/timeline?

Advice Khefak Biogenetics Info

Do we have anything from paizo written on Khefak Biogenetics? I am writing a mission for my group with ties to a biogen company and reading the write up on the Khefak sounds like an option to tie a monster into the storyline.

Discussion Gubbin and other creatures to summon for range 1-4 level play

Currently building a Servoshell Technomancer and in looking at the Summon spells and what creatures I can use in encounters, I have found the Gubbin to be among the most interesting... it has a frightening aura with a decent DC, all of its strike can potentially make enemies sickened or glitching 1 and a decent hp pool. Compared to other summons, its damage is not the best of them all, but pretty good nonetheless (1d4+2!). Shotout to the Assembly Ooze and to the Hardlight Scamp for being another good options for the same level range.

Love how the creatures in sf2e are more exciting to summon compared to pf2e, even the undead options are not all perma slowed 2! Take a look at the Necrolinked Wight and the Noquasar Spark for example.

In terms of fey, personal favorites are Clangit and Botnib

Advice Enchanted Cigarettes

I want my soldier to have a permanent cigarette jammed in, or floating just in front of, their mouth.

Under any and all, circumstances. Just woken up. Inside their space helmet, floating off to one side while they eat, somehow sizzling away as they dive through the submerged basement of the Temple o'Tentacles Calamari Shack.

Obviously, gm fait can allow it. But anything I could use to really wind my GM up?

Player Builds Full Build Friday - Burnice White [Human Kineticist]

BURNICE WHITE

SOURCE Zenless Zone Zero

BUILD GOALS

o    Burnice is the mysterious mixologist of the Sons of Calydon biker gang, she fuels its members organic and mechanic and is known for her enthusiasm and optimism

o    She fights with a pair of flamethrowers that she has named Mixer and Shaker and can unleash short blasts with them or surround herself in flames with her Mixed Flame Blend

o    Her special attack lets her unleash flames in a cone from one of her flamethrowers though she can also unleash both in certain circumstances

o    These attacks Scorch enemies, causing her allies to deal fire damage to them and apply fire anomaly. Doing so lets her enter the Emberflow state

o    When she enters the field in Emberflow state, she dashes through an enemy and blasts them with flame

o    Her ult is a Glorious Inferno where she dashes forward, leaps into the air, and continuously sprays flames in a wide area. This triggers a quick assist

o    Through her Mindscape Cinema, she can increase the penetration of her allies’ attacks, let her fire her throwers longer, and trigger even more fire damage

o    The Flamemaker Shaker W-Engine increases her energy regen and her damage while off-field

Summary of Goals: Burnice is all about setting things ablaze and spreading fire in all sorts of areas. She has a bit of a line or a cone with her special attack, an emanation with her Mixed Flame Blend, and even short-ranged blasts between her Emberflow entrance and Glorious Inferno. Outside of all her fire stuff that she’s able to inflict, she’s the gang’s chemist and mixologist, pretty nimble, and her demo shows that she’s quite the dancer, so that might suggest some skills to look into.

BUILD CONCLUSION

Burnice White is a pioneer human pyrokineticist with a background as a bartender that fits with her role as the mixologist of the Sons of Calydon, which is further explored through an Alchemist Dedication. She can unleash bursts of fire with Elemental Blasts or through the Area Fire of a flamethrower. It takes a while to get there, but All Shall End in Flames lets Burnice surround herself in swirling blaze, per her Mixed Flame Blend. The cone of her special attack works through the flamethrower but can alternatively be explored through the Blazing Wave impulse. Rather than using two flamethrowers for her Double Shot special attack, she can just use Run Hot to fire it off twice and then use her impulses while that's cooling down. An Acrobatics investment will help her dash through enemies, per her Emberflow entrance, though Volcanic Escape or Shot on the Run could fit the leap and blast of it. For Burnice’s Glorious Inferno, I think the burst of All Shall End in Flames or Solar Detonation should be a good stand-in for it though she misses out on the quick assist feature. However, she can increase her allies’ ability to apply fire and flame anomaly through Kindle Inner Flames with the bonus fire damage and eventual flaming runes it applies. She can apply her own fire anomaly through the critical blast kineticist junction. As to her mindscapes, she can actually demonstrate her penetration increase a bit through the aura junction of the fire element as it leaves foes with a weakness to fire damage while her base impulse junction amps up the base damage of her fire impulses. The energy regen of her W-Engine is a little hard to translate over, but Kinetic Pinnacle and her final gate feature gives her a free action that can be used to Channel Elements, so even after she’s used up all her energy for a big overflow effect, she can get right back into it.

Whether behind the bar or on the battlefield, this bubbly blonde brings bolstering brews to her buds and brutal blazes to bitter bete noirs.

I'm about to go on a little vacation where I won't be posting any Monster Mondays or Full Build Fridays, so with the weather cooling down, I thought I'd leave you with a build to help keep you warm! This was a lot of fun to build even if I changed it halfway through, but if you want to see the design details, you can check out the free Patreon post or the YT video. Have a fantastic Friday and a happy Halloween!

Discussion hephaistos 2 docs/help

I can't find a better place to ask this, so I'll try here. Does anyone know about making house rules in hephaistos2e?

Specifically, how do you have a feat ask for choice to be made (like pick one skill)? I've read through https://sf2e.hephaistos.online/docs/guides/dragonscript/, but I just don't see a prompt or field anywhere. I know it works from Assurance, but I just can't figure out how to do it in a house rule.

Discussion Omnilore+ via Nuar with 1st and 13th level ancestry feats

FYI, for those who haven't aid much attention to the (uncommon, so ask your GM nicely about adoption) Nuar ancestry in the Abasalom Station book, it has a couple of feats that effectively give you a late game omnilore with a +1 bonus over the usual trained/expert you would have from something like Bardic Knowledge.

MAZE LOST, NUAR, FEAT 1

You constantly wander the maze of life, moving from one interest to the next; as a result, it’s easy to forget past passions while delving into others. You gain the Additional Lore feat, as well as the benefits of Unmistakable Lore (Player Core 230) for that Lore subcategory, even if you don’t meet the prerequisites. You can retrain Maze Lost to a different Lore skill subcategory with 1 day of downtime.

Unmistakeable Lore upgrades crit fails to fails, and gives additional info/context on a crit success.

SEEMINGLY RANDOM STUDY, NUAR, FEAT 13

Prerequisites Maze Lost Who says topics can’t be randomly connected? Whenever you attempt a check to Recall Knowledge, you can roll the Lore skill you gained from Maze Lost with a –3 circumstance penalty instead of rolling with a normally applicable skill.

When you get this you're a Master, and so recall at +3 vs the +2 trained bonus a normal omnilore would get. At 15th level you go legendary, reduced to +5 vs a potential +4 expert on an omnilore.

This pair of feats also combo well with an Akashic Lens magic item to cast Akashic Download up to every 10 minutes, giving you a +1-2 item bonus, a +1 status bonus, and upgrading your successes to crit successes - only failures don't get an upgrade at this point.

And because there's a -3 circumstance penalty, you have some modest interest in taking Assurance and Automatic Knowledge to try a free Recall Knowledge on all lower level enemies regardless of type with your legendary proficiency.

There's also a few other lore related feats. The ones I can imagine using for this sort of build are Personal Legend (5th) allows you to Make an Impression or Create a Diversion, usually at a -2 penalty, using Lore, New Path (9th) allows you once per day to retrain your Maze Lost lore to something else in 10 minutes (probably train out at 13th).

Arts & Crafts [Ship Map] | Mother of Invention, Habitation & Hangar Decks | Ship Sheet

Thumbnail
gallery
24 Upvotes

About a month ago I posted the image of the Mother of Inventions command deck. I thought I'd update it to include the lower (habitation/shuttle bay) deck, and it's upper (mostly exterior) deck.

The elevators line up correctly, with the left elevator on the command and exterior decks being for launching drones and small vehicles.

The upper deck is designed to allow docking of the SFS Helvetios (although I fucked up the measurements, and it really can't actually fit the Helvetios). Also, damn it's been nine months since I made the Helvetios, huh?

My players landed on this ship sheet, and we've been through one (very very easy) starship combat!

I'm really enjoying the Tactical Starship Rules, and it was great making this with my friends! Feel free to use this map as you like, same with any of the stuff I post. The exterior map is also designed to be easily readable from the size it'd be on a tactical starship map, which is how we use it on our Foundry game.

There's a few things I'm not quite happy with on both of these maps, but I think I'll be calling it done here!
