Discussion If Battlefront 3 wasn't worth making in 2021, what changed, and what's the catch?
EA reportedly rejected a Battlefront 3 pitch in 2021, partly due to licensing costs. Now we're hearing rumors about DICE and Respawn potentially bringing the franchise back.
So what changed? And what's the catch?
With all the layoffs, studio closures and cancelled projects across the industry, I can't imagine EA considering another Battlefront without a solid business case.
A few possibilities come to mind:
- Monetization: Paid expansions (BF 2015), free updates + cosmetics (BFII 2017), Battle Passes, or something entirely new?
- Development costs: Smaller teams, AI-assisted development, cheaper content production?
- Live-service strategy: One game supported for 5–10 years, or multiple sequels like 04/05 and 15/17.
- Licensing: A more favorable deal between EA and Lucasfilm?
As someone who's played Battlefront since 2004, this is easily my all-time favorite franchise. I'm incredibly hyped about these rumors and genuinely hope they're true.
But we've seen Battlefront III cancelled, BFII's controversial launch and live-service support ending earlier than many of us hoped.
What if the very thing that makes Battlefront 3 possible is also what we should be most worried about?
I'm not questioning whether the developers can make an incredible game. I'm wondering what business decisions are being made behind the scenes.
What do you think has changed since 2021, and what kind of long-term strategy is EA betting on?
