The Indian fusion restaurant idea was always a bit of a stretch for a historic diner....but the prices are what made me think the new owners were nuts.

The Green Line Shutdown on Halloween is a major Safety concern

The MBTA’s Green Line will have service suspensions on several branches next Saturday and Sunday for underground signal upgrades, affecting stops near Boston College, Boston University, Berklee College of Music, Boston Architectural College, Suffolk University, Emerson College, Northeastern University, New England Conservatory of Music, Simmons University, Massachusetts College of Art and Design, Wentworth Institute of Technology, Hult International Business School and Tufts University. 14 colleges and universities (and I'm sure I've missed some).

Boston has three major drinking holidays each year: St. Patrick's Day, Independence Day and Halloween. This year, The MBTA has picked this upcoming Halloween weekend to cut off public transportation on the route with the most college kids AND anyone else who is drinking and enjoying the holiday. This is a Public Safety issue.

Shuttle buses are confusing and inefficient (30+ mins additional time to get where you're going) and drunk people won't use them. Uber and Lyft will be astronomically expensive due to surge pricing. Driving under the influence will be a consequence to this decision putting Trick or Treating kids and other drivers in harms way.

When you make getting to a destination more difficult, people will choose the easiest option. We should be making sure every possible avenue of safe transit is open and available during times known for drinking. Make the right choices easier, not harder.

I'm not willing to put kids (babies or college age) in danger because of a clearly poorly thought out decision being made by the MBTA. I'm calling and emailing the people below to try and stop this. So far, the response I've received is "you're the first person to call about this". Please call and add your voice.

Where to find postcards?

My niece is just starting to learn how to write, and has been sending people in my family letters as a way of practicing her writing. Since I moved to MA (she's a few states further south) I don't get to see her as often as I used to. I thought that it'd be cool to send her postcards to keep her interested in writing to me.

Now, my problem is, I've been having a hellish time trying to find postcards! It took me an hour and a half the other weekend to find a place that sold postcards in Boston proper. I managed to grab her a few Boston ones, but I'm wondering if there's a place that sells Somerville ones? I'd like to find a bunch of cool places to send her postcards of. I know that there's a place near Davis Square that sells them (from a different quest for postcards when I was contemplating a move up here) but I can't remember the name of it. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Local Recommendation Condo Property Management Recommendations

Hey everyone!

I have a small 1 bed 1 bath condo I may potentially be looking to rent soon. I was unhappy with my last management company after they seemingly grew too quickly. They became very unresponsive to requests from both tenants and myself and raised monthly maintenance rates quite aggressively.

Thanks!

Local Recommendation Recommendations for Framing Store?

Hello,
I have some art I would like framed (both prints and paintings) and would like to have it done by a local business. I've gotten prints framed at the Michaels in Porter before and they were ok, but I was not overawed by the quality. Does anyone have any recommendations? Thanks!

Public Safety Creep following me for the second time on Highland Ave

Edit: please dm me directly to request the picture. Unfortunately Reddit is restricting my account from starting new chats right now because it's new, so I can't message you first.

Posting from a throwaway in case said creep looks at this sub. This weird guy has followed me twice now on Highland Ave. He watches me from a short distance and then alters his direction or side of the street to force a "surprise" crossing of paths with me. He does it repeatedly, like he's enjoying the discomfort he's causing, but this time I took a recording of him for my police report.

I think he had been planning on playing that weird little stalking game again but once it was clear that I was recording what he was doing I didn't see him again. But that is exactly how people who behave this way end up getting away with doing things like this, they just move on to someone else once their target is clearly not going to cooperate.

I wanted to give the heads up to other women. I'm willing to share the picture I have, but you will have to dm me.

Artist looking for porch to “borrow” in a high foot traffic zone!

Hi! I’m an upcycle textile artist looking to have my next pop up! I love saving clothes from landfills and giving them a bright new fun colorful life. I recently had my first “pop up shop” in a friend’s driveway and it was a HUGE success! I’m looking for my next porch/driveway to hang out in for a few hours on a weekend AM

Would consist of 2 small clothing racks and insane vibes (like some of the best pop up vibes you’ve ever seen!).

Ty!!!!

Were you up early this morning? I was. The full moon was hovering in the pink and purple sky, framed by the bare branches of trees. It was a peaceful scene that I just enjoyed instead of capturing with a camera. This week there's no writing, just some photos of lovely nature I snapped last week.

But while I've got your attention: have you voted yet? Call five friends and relatives and make sure THEY voted or have a plan to vote. Also, deep breaths, loosen your shoulders, drink a big glass of water, and spend five minutes looking at something in nature every day, even if it's just a houseplant.

Be smart, be safe, be curious, be kind. Take care of each other.

Free plastic hangers

There's a huge bucket of free plastic hangers up for grabs at my curb. Located on the odd numbered side of Quincy Street between Capen St and Osgood St - technically in Medford but close to the Somerville line. Not far from Teele Square and Tufts. Comes from a clean home!

Anyone wanna jam some rock music?

I (24M) moved here pretty recently was looking to play some rock and/or heavier music and meet some new people! Maybe all that want to suggest a song or two that we practice beforehand then play together? I'm thinking we could get away with playing in my basement or my porch if we are without drummer (I live in Foss Park). I'm chill with it being lowkey, as I am beginner/intermediate on guitar, but I'd love to end up playing in porchfest next year. Comment if you are interested!

Oped: Somerville improved Community Path safety...it's our turn to do better - CS Indie

Thumbnail
csindie.com

Somerville government has shown up and made quick-build changes on the Community Path. Now, it’s on us to be better neighbors and users.

I want to applaud the city for installing calming measures, better signs and road treatments along the path, especially near School Street. As a triweekly runner, I appreciate it. More importantly, as a four-times-a-week Bluebike user, I acknowledge the importance.

For folks who are on the path a lot, we did not need a well-organized statistical analysis to tell us what we see: There are bicycle and e-bike users who just go way too fast and create danger for more vulnerable users. I’m talking about walkers and pedestrians. I’m also talking about commuters and students.

When we speed by on wheels, we should use empathy and try to understand the impact of riding so fast within 2 feet of someone who’s moving more slowly. We should understand that our legs, which do burn or get tired from the ups and downs of the path, are not as important as the safety of those around us. Don’t get me wrong, there’s nothing like riding a bike and feeling 15 mph air flowing by. That being said, is my commute or my workout, at speed, more important than my neighbors?

The city didn’t take full ownership and responsibility of the path until a year or two after the MBTA green line extension opened in 2023. By then, some of the intersections, including School Street, we’re already designed by state architects and designers that didn’t understand the local focus. So it’s taken time to get to this point.

Now that the city is in charge and community members and city councilors are on the case, improvements can be made conscious of a largely unspoken truth: There are no police on the path – and I’m certainly not advocating for their presence; What I am advocating is holding each other accountable. And being nice to one another.

Mayor Jake Wilson declared this the year of the neighbor. I couldn’t think of a more apt application than as a starting point to share the Community Path in a better way. I know I can improve when I’m on a bike, and my fellow riders can too.
