Fan Content Kudos to the design team. I want to point out some very specific details about one document that you may have missed!
Hey Severance fans! I'm the guy who made this:
https://www.valencygraphics.com/severance
These are resources that I've re-made based on design we've seen in the show. I have the keycards and ID cards en route, currently re-making the Senior Refiner Morning Checklist, based on the wonderful shots that u/ymcameron took here. In the process, I wanted to point out things that I think are taken for granted in the design of this show, but stand out to me as a designer!
To start, there's a fantastic interview with Teddy Blanks, the designer of the logo, who talks about how the logo itself is a custom font. This is to give Severance the appearance of Helvetica and Aksidenz-Grotesk, but it's a combination of many aspects and quirks of the off-shoot fonts that have come since that emulate a similar feel to both of these. This also gives (from a design perspective) an uncanny feel. When I recreated this logo, I couldn't properly identify the font itself due to these differences. As a recreator, this is both amazing and infuriating. Infuriating because it's not a font I can easily get, but amazing that they cared so much about this detail.
With the Senior Refiner Morning Checklist, they're using Forma DJR as their base font, but they have interspersed Helvetica and Aksidenz-Grotesk every so often in the documents I've seen to keep you on your toes, which is such a niche detail. I like that it's a toss-up how they use it because it makes it a bit unsettling for me as a designer to see differences in their written materials, but it's so refreshing to see a show this meticulously designed! I think Teddy says it best:
"... I got to work closely with Ben. I was – and remain – so impressed by his thoughtfulness and attention to detail. I’d imagine not a lot of directors have the clout to hire a separate “fonts person” when they’ve already engaged someone else to create an elaborate animated title sequence but I’m lucky that Ben is one of them."
Every line in the main body text, in the checklist has been intentionally double-spaced between each word. I am just barely old enough to remember typewriters before my family had a computer. My mom's documents all had double spaces after every period being a typist. This translated to every Word document having two spaces after each sentence she wrote, because that was the standard she was used to. Those were frustrating to edit out when I would do stuff for school or try to work on one of her documents until I discovered the Find/Replace tool. But given the world of Severance, it is interesting to me that the designers have made the intentional choices to make something so simple, both give an aesthetic (nicely spaced words for emphasis of lined items), but also indicate the routine and monotony of Lumon's designed world. These spaces, if typed manually, put so much more effort into even a simple document, an exercise in patience and perseverance (see what I did there?). I can imagine the quote from Kier himself:
"The spoken word is only given life through breath. So shall the written word be given life through expressed breadth."
You get the idea. :D
There are so many more like this, I'm sure, but I love that I'm getting to find these myself, just wanted to share them with you guys!
