The Petey twist was interesting...didn't think they would show us an unsevered person so quickly. Wonder how much he knows...
125
u/AngelChu Feb 20 '22
Apparently there's only 9 eps for season one
62
Feb 21 '22
I hope this doesn’t become another servant where we get three seasons in and have no answers.
40
u/AngelChu Feb 22 '22
Servant's planned to have 4 seasons I believe, not sure about this one, but I don't think it's as much of a slow burn since it's more of a thriller?
15
Feb 22 '22
I think servant is four or five seasons and it’s definitely much slower than severance. I’m just hoping for a real conclusion.

u/username_error1 Apr 16 '22
I’m always looking for a new mysterious type show. Is Servant worth checking out? What exactly is it about? I googled it but didn’t quite understand the synopsis.
1
u/feverpitch3 Apr 24 '22
Just finished season 3 servant and season 1 of severance. Seems like some decent writers were brought in for season 3 of servant to salvage the damage done in S1 and S2. Much more confident in severance writers.
10
u/narvolicious Feb 22 '22
Omg. I bailed from Servant to start watching Severance. Funny how they kinda sound the same.
I’d started it not long ago and was at S2E9. It was starting to open up a little bit, but there were just too many unanswered questions I had—I’m usually into slow-burny dark stuff and even like most of Shyamalan’s work, but this was just too trying on my patience.
I might revisit it, but I’m totally hooked on Severance right now. I dig Adam Scott and the ambiance and premise is far out.
32
Feb 21 '22
How? Did he get unsevered? Why is he not seeking help or brain surgery?
You have to be of sound mind to get Severance … but after is one of sound mind?
Severance reduces sex drive.
28
u/Risengarde Feb 21 '22
Did he get unsevered?
He did get unsevered (he told Mark when he cornered him in the bar) but he had 'help'.
but after is one of sound mind
We don't know yet but he was suffering from side effects of his re-integration
20
u/Equiatl Feb 23 '22
I beg 2 differ. Consciously choosing to spilt your personality is a pretty heavy thing. One's mind would already need 2b compromised somehow imo--meaning, the participant is running from a trauma that is difficult to process, kinda like Mark.
5
u/feverpitch3 Apr 24 '22 edited Apr 24 '22
It did seem too quick to show an unsevered person. Could have been delayed to better effect.
273
u/AngelChu Feb 19 '22
they probably screen their workers beforehand to make sure their personal lifestyle wouldn't affect their worklives (though you can see a bit of adam scott's character drinking to deal with the loss of his wife?), but my first thought was "man it'd be really messed up if you somehow got pregnant"
114
u/mugwump Feb 19 '22
Oof, I didn’t even think of that. I hope we get to see it in the show.
62
u/AngelChu Feb 19 '22
I know maternity leave is a thing but that's usually after you have the baby, feels like something they wouldn't allow, unless their surgery/brainwashing/etc was powerful enough to where the work self AND everyone else somehow literally "can't" see a pregnant belly (I mean most women can work during a pregnancy but it'd be more of an issue when it's later towards the due date or a complication happens in between, not sure how good their medics is, that one note lied to Mark about him hitting his head as opposed to Helly throwing something at him)
44
u/mugwump Feb 19 '22
Sure. Their job is sitting around staring at a computer screen. You can probably do that till you’re almost ready to give birth. I can only guess how your office mates would react, having this intrusion into their work each day.
14
14
u/PepperStanwyck Mar 27 '22
I’m sure they can implant something to prevent conception along with your severance chip.
4
u/Horror_Platypus Feb 23 '22
Or if something went wrong during the pregnancy at work? Also makes me wonder if someone quits, like Carol, who’s outtie left them a thank you video, and if she did actually quit, and remains living, what happens then? I’m assuming your brain wouldn’t do the switch off that happens in the elevator, so you would just continue to live as your outtie, your time being at Lumon, erased? And the chip still in place in your brain
7
u/AngelChu Feb 23 '22
Apparently miscarriages still happen even if you're a 'healthy' person/are careful, though IDK how the company would explain it to you (or imagine, what if they give you someone else's baby to raise as an experiment or so). Though I'm not sure how often 'outies' would let their inner selves quit since they go into the procedure knowing its permanent and having a job (wonder if the older employees closer to the retirement age would have side effects with the chip), it's possible that the ppl giving 'goodbye' vids were never severed to begin with and occasionally show those vids to comfort the innies? I'm sure there'll be more theories after the next ep premieres, one of the preview clips mentions a 'coup' for some reason...

Feb 21 '22
Mark is now going to find a way to leave with Hella so they wake up together … and become lovers .. and broken in the break room.
The big guy gets rewarded with food…he’ll be asked to spy on Mark and Hella and get a jar full of vending coins as a reward.
49
Feb 19 '22
The old guy is falling asleep at his desk. Clearly he’s not getting enough sleep. He looked liked he had stuff under his fingernails? Smoker? Drugs? Idk..
129
u/Maskatron Feb 21 '22
I know I'd be like "Fuck it, I'm staying up all night, let that other guy deal with the consequences."
I know this because I've done it many times even without being severed.
37
u/Thegreylady13 Apr 13 '22
This is no time to worry about Morning Me.
4
u/bonzaivenus Apr 22 '22
That was my night shift self when I couldn’t sleep during the day. Just counting down to end of shift saying you’re fucked but it’s time to go …
19
64
u/hawkeyetlse Feb 20 '22
Or paint? Maybe he’s the one who paints some of their weird art, like that freaky whipping painting. “It’s calming” lol 😂
11
21
u/AngelChu Feb 19 '22
(I kinda assumed it was b/c of his age tbh, tho i did know someone in one of my classes that was able to fall asleep with their eyes open) Yeah the hallucination does seem like something that might be something exacerbated post surgery/severance. And quite sinister that you can't pass notes/messages to yourself, seems like some innocent notes would be helpful like "refill gas, sleep earlier tonight" or so (but overall given this concept i'd expect the companies to do some kinda baseline psychology test or background check to make sure the personal selves/'outies' are fairly responsible before hiring them)
18
u/professorbadtrip Feb 19 '22
If not what tenclubber guessed, then Irivng's narcolepsy might indicayr a side effect of the process (since he's been in that pd the longest).
17
u/TheBossMan5000 Feb 25 '22
They commented on it before it happened, the other pudgy guy coworker made a quip about him falling asleep before, and he said "It's not my fault I was hired older than the rest of you", but I bet the real reason is his outie doing stuff late at night
16
12
Feb 20 '22
My thoughts were what if he wasn't really sleeping but waking up from the fake work lives that they are in? His mind was waking up but then came back to. And maybe the guy that led him out to the wellness area just told him he had fallen asleep to make him believe what he was seeing was just a dream.
8
u/AngelChu Feb 20 '22
seems very matrixy/like inception? Well i didn't really remember much from those but i'm sure some parts are meant to be confusing and such. Although it would be a bit weird if it was /super/ scifi as opposed to just more of a psychological thing and the melty black slime stuff /was/ real from some kinda alien monster or so and their brains ignore it b/c of the surgery but IDK how plot twisty/complicated they're gonna get
36
17
Feb 21 '22
I think he’s intentionally not getting enough sleep. Memories and sleep are intrinsically tied. Your brain essentially stores short term memory into Lon g term memory during sleep. Severance probably breaks this connection but not sleeping probably does some weird shit with it. Just my theory.
8
11
9
43
u/drawing-maker Feb 19 '22
It would be messed up mainly because you would know you have a child but you would never meet it.
20
u/thrillhouse83 Feb 19 '22
Unless you gave birth at lumon
10
u/AngelChu Feb 19 '22
well i assume they couldn't let you keep a kid at work unless there's some kinda daycare facility but i don't think they have traditional 'breaks'
14
2
11
u/AngelChu Feb 19 '22
I'd think it'd be impossible to separate your personal life from your worklife if you have kids versus just being married b/c I'd assume most parents keep their phone on standby at all time in case of emergency calls, though it would be interesting to see an older father/son relationship where they work in the same building without realizing it, if that's not already a thing in the company.
20
Feb 21 '22
Could you imagine if mark and helly hooked up and she got pregnant as an innie? No clue how they would handle that.
23
u/Illustrious-Pizza-50 Feb 24 '22
Before I realized the prominence of the Petey storyline I thought the main plot would be that mark and helly fell in love both in and out of the lumon universe and worked together to unite themselves lol
9
u/AngelChu Feb 22 '22
I assume office relationships wouldn't really be allowed but I can see that kinda being a plot point if they do have some kinda romance arc (tho I think he's still grieving his wife, unless he gets drunk at a bar and does a 'one night stand' without realizing)
13
Feb 22 '22
Yeah his outie is grieving his wife and his innie is probably sad but doesn’t know why.
Office romances are most likely not allowed but I can se that being a plot point.
Either way I’m mad this show is released once a week.
6
u/AustralopithecineHat Feb 21 '22
My thought as well. Maybe they make the women use an IUD or something.
4
6
Feb 21 '22
5
u/AngelChu Feb 22 '22
Yeah considering ppl are keeping an eye on them I'm sure it'd be hard to sneak in any kinda thing, so I'm surprised Petey wasn't wearing a hoodie or attempting to disguise his face a bit more when meeting Mark in the diner

Those 2 first episodes would be great black mirror episodes. Very excited about the rest of the season.
126
u/alisonrose1992 Feb 18 '22
Right? If we can’t have Black Mirror, at least we have this. This is basically 1 Black Mirror episode as it’s own series.
45
Feb 19 '22
I think almost every black mirror episode could have its own series! Glad we have this in the meantime.

u/redditisnowtwitter Feb 20 '22
White Christmas vibes 100%
12
u/kappakai May 06 '22
Very much so. These guys remind me of cookies.
That episode fucked me up for a while lol.
35
u/divinediana Feb 20 '22
Yes, I was thinking back to the USS Callister episode! They have separate work selves that are stuck in another world, and little/no ability to communicate to their other self.
27
10
8
u/Illustrious-Pizza-50 Feb 24 '22
That’s how I’ve described it to everyone I’m trying to convince to watch lol similar to Black Mirror with a little dry comedy mixed in
241
u/thrillhouse83 Feb 19 '22 edited Feb 20 '22
It’s a great start but I just don’t see how the innies can tolerate working 24/7. Sure they feel the effects of sleep but they never get to. They live in complete tedium. I don’t understand why they seem so content with the smallest things like a waffle party instead of just lying around depressed and wanting to kill themselves. Are they being fed serotonin or something?
158
u/professorbadtrip Feb 19 '22
Probably something in the snacks; they can only eat food provided by the company while at work.
140
Feb 21 '22
They tolerate it because they have nothing outside of work and the grind culture - so pretty much like real life.
59
u/thrillhouse83 Feb 21 '22
I said tolerate but that’s not even the right word, they seem to enjoy it and are unfazed by the tedium. Again, I suppose it’ll be explained that they’re also being drugged by the snacks
82
u/Equiatl Feb 21 '22
the psychological depth of this show is insane. They deny the horrors 2 mentally cope & survive. They sever like most people do. We just call it denial, compartmentalization, or passive aggression
45
u/Ph0X May 03 '22
It's about baseline. Do you, your life outside of work is likely more enjoyable, so work seems like the bad part of your day. To them, that's their baseline, so even a small finger trap brings happiness.
It's similar to how someone living in a 3rd world country can still be happy, hell studies often find that the people who are super wealthy are often more depressed.
The higher your baseline, the harder it is to find happiness. Happiness is basically going over the baseline, so when the baseline is super low, any small thing brings happiness.
2
u/j_gumby Jan 29 '25
I have a concept I call "My favorite equation". It's H = R - E, or how much Happiness you have about something (an event, your life, etc.) is equal to how good the thing in Reality is, minus your Expectations about it. In order to maximize happiness, you can either increase how good reality is, or you can decrease your expectations (or do both). Since we don't always have control over reality, our best chance is at lowering expectations.
51
u/RoachedCoach Feb 21 '22
Yeah, I'm struggling to see what motivates them. They essentially have nothing to live for.
50
u/Equiatl Feb 21 '22
Uh only their perceived existence lol. Don't think they would just willingly d*e because of their situation
35
3
Apr 28 '22
It’s a stretch, but maybe the experience of jazz is brand new to them, so it’s a seratonin boost for a very bored repressed brain.
It’s so giving me The Lobster lite (in a good way)
35
u/Horror_Platypus Feb 23 '22
I agree. The “perks” just aren’t motivating enough, which is probably on purpose, I think it’s more of a negative reinforcement policy here, no one wants the ‘break room,’ so they find solace in “melon bars” and “waffle parties.”
22
u/Equiatl Feb 21 '22
I think of this concept a lot...but I believe their minds cope or they'll go insane. I mean it's similar 2 real life BS jobs...a culture develops in it where to deny the tedium they mentally cope & get excited about very mundane things
18
u/pugofthewildfrontier Jan 28 '23
Ever been at an office job where employees legit get excited for Friday casual wear day?
16
u/myfaveRae Feb 27 '22
Same. All innies know is tedium. Without anything to look forward to, not even sleep. It would be worse than Groundhog Day. I strongly doubt if a drug exists that could prevent me from going full psychotic from that kind of existence.

u/BrainPossible Apr 28 '22 edited Apr 28 '22
This is a really good point. It would seem like the whole ritual of leaving the office would be meaningless as five o’clock rolled around. I could see myself trying to stay late and sleeping in the office just to give my innie some actual downtime. It would be horrifying/ hellish to walk to the elevator at the end of day knowing you’re going to be facing another 9 hour workday immediately.
2
u/williamkey123 Apr 08 '22
Mmm well turns out waffle parties are (episode 7 or 8 spoiler)
orgies so that makes it more interesting2
Apr 11 '22
There’s an acceptable level of unrealistic responses from the characters initially because it’s a satire I guess
145
u/petielvrrr Feb 23 '22
Okay a couple more thoughts:
-
When Mark gets to work the parking lot is completely full (as well as the lobby). When he leaves there’s like 2 cars. Does Lumen stagger all of their employees? Or just the severed ones? Is it possible that most people in the building are severed? I would assume so, but they make a point of saying “severed floor”.
-
Why is incentivizing creamer, but not finger traps, weird? Again, WHAT IS GOING ON WITH THE FOOD. I just honestly can’t make sense of it.
-
The handshake feels….. significant. Like why did Mark have to think about it and why did his boss look surprised when he asked for it?
59
u/memecut Feb 25 '22
2. They probably drug the food.. they have so many measures to keep the sheep compliant, wouldn't surprise me if the food is part of that.
3. Youre offered to shake hands with the boss.. you take a moment to consider which option is best.. weigh the pros and cons.. think what each actions says about you as a person.... Would they like it? Would I like it? What would they think about me if I do it, or don't? Do I want to, why do I want to?
Mark outside of work is a very reserved person.. given the choice, shaking hands is more of an extroverted choice than an introverted one.. Marks outside personality screams introverted, but thats because of his loss (death of his daughter).. but inside, he is free from his memories of her death, which means this personality is more like the one he used to have before he got severed. The boss has only known him after the death, as the death was his reason to get severed - so she has only known him as this reserved introvert. Which is why its surprising to her to see him make the extroverted choice.
I could be wrong of course.

u/BurnsRedit Feb 19 '22
Can’t wait for the office Christmas party episode.
27
Feb 21 '22
This is dishing out some serious existential vibes of office life.
Those paper awards that get passed around each quarter - mandatory award ceremonies, cashless awards, meaningless work, $20 sheet cakes with super unhealthy frosting.
You had your fun, now get back to work.
10

u/BrainPossible Apr 28 '22
Do innies even know the current date? Does innie Mark’s watch have a date on it? Doesn’t look like it.
120
u/gsm3ed Feb 19 '22
Why is the technology so out dated. What year was this supposed to be
109
u/orion_black Feb 19 '22
For outies is more or less modern day. Mark uses a smartphone, and they have flat screens in the operation room. Although, I kinda recall all cars looking old.
59
u/29erforthewin Feb 20 '22 edited Feb 20 '22
Mark’s car is a 1998 Volvo S70. In the parking lot, it was actually the newest car there, there was a wide mix of cars dating back as far as the 60s. We do see the bottom of the smartphone when he puts it in the drawer. It’s just a large thin black screen in a clear case. It’s definitely a modern phone, or even a more futuristic model, because a thin, flat all-screen design is probably where phones are going to stay for awhile. It’s thinner and wider than a 13 pro max, and the edges aren’t rounded like the galaxy note.
19
Feb 20 '22 edited Feb 20 '22
It’s definitely an iPhone lol. If you haven’t noticed, all Apple TV+ originals feature iPhones prominently. You can even tell by the ringtones usually.Edit: It’s not an iPhone. You can see when he gets a call at Pip’s. I was recently watching Servant and the product placement there was so obvious. Must have gotten the shows mixed up in my head.
8
u/29erforthewin Feb 20 '22 edited Feb 20 '22
Here’s the only clear shot of the smartphone, you don’t see the rest of it clearly when he puts it in the drawer. Take a look at that side button, the Sony Xperia has something like that.
3
u/Thegreylady13 Apr 14 '22
I’ll never believe that the product placement in Servant is not there 98% as a joke. I know that it fits some scenarios because they very rarely leave the house, but I think they’ve just been challenging themselves for the entire run of the show to see how much they can overdo it. I say this as someone who really, really enjoys loves that show.
6

50
Feb 22 '22
I assumed that the “work” the severed are doing at Lumon is really just fake / busy work which is why they are using such old technology. They’re really just test subjects.
49
u/memecut Feb 25 '22
Its an alternate reality.. its fiction.. and they have their own aesthetic. Basically, it looks the way it looks because of the vibe it gives you.
11
u/sogothimdead Jul 15 '22
Sorry to necropost but I think too it makes the setting seem more timeless since the tech is already outdated and not just following modern trends
9
29
u/Barnhard Apr 11 '22
Late to the party here, but I assume it’s a mixture of aesthetic choice for the show, and also technology that cannot access the internet, so the innies can’t see anything on the outside.
16
u/MacOgrady1984 Feb 19 '22
I caught this too. I think this will have a major part in the age of the Organization. The monitors remind me of the first Macs, and DOS like OS, looked late 80s. When he rebooted the computer they showed all the boot code for a few seconds. Probably a good tell if you understood that stuff.

Reminds me of the TVA in Loki. But in that case I guess it was because the TVA really had been around forever. But the orientation videos/ literature, with a cute little evil mascot cheerfully telling you what’s happening to you, it really gave me the same vibes.
117
u/Hungover52 Feb 21 '22
Does Adam Scott look significantly different now? I don't know if it's time, makeup, or something else happened, but everytime I see his face it feels slanted, like it's not quite real.
86
u/petielvrrr Feb 21 '22
I noticed that too, and I watched a podcast/YouTube show he went on like 3 weeks ago (like he was there 3 weeks ago and I watched it a day after it was filmed/recorded) and he even looks significantly different from that, so I think it’s makeup. I also noticed a slight difference in his “innie” vs “outie” appearance.
28
u/Hungover52 Feb 21 '22
Cheers. It threw me a bit, glad it's just regular hollywood 'magic' rather than something else.
62
Apr 21 '22
I just watched this and don't know if you found out already or not, but everything inside the office has a different camera lens than outside, the change is visible during the elevator ride. I liked it and how it shows the clear divide between the workplace and the outside and helps with the uncanniness of it
5
u/SpeakItLoud Mar 05 '23
But what specifically is the difference? I can tell that the visual changes in the elevator but I can't identify the change.

u/blankspacejrr Dec 13 '24
noticed it to.
I think a contributing factor is the harsh overhead office lighting
and i’ve noticed they film him from slightly below head level. and I think(?) they film outtie mark as more above head. he has a large jaw so it really makes a difference

Interesting show - the visuals are really cool. Brings up so many thoughts about how much of work affects your outside life. Questions/thoughts:
-
Anyone constantly thinking belly buttons? (outtie/innie)
-
Why did he switch his watch when he came in?
-
The whole point of Mark wanting to sever to forget his wife doesn't really make sense bc he isn't experiencing the time that he's at work. So he's just remembering his wife in a truncated time span, right?
-
That whole non dinner party was so unnerving. I get such a creepy sense of what the world must be like
-
I thought it was cool how Mark's temperament and mood slowly changed as he walked through all the aisles at work. And that was before you really knew what was going on.
-
Is his neighbor/boss severed? I'm assuming she's not and is there spying but just wanted to check.
50
Feb 24 '22
Yes and I hate it lol
I think because his outie had on a watch with writing and numbers (switched to comply with code detectors)
Perhaps he thought it would be easier to get through his workdays not thinking about his loss
I agree and I cannot wait to see what’s going on with the food situation in the world
I wonder if that’s due to the conditioning of the place? So far it seems they’re heavily brainwashed to behave in a very non emotional way
I am leaning towards her not being severed but I’m not 100%
I tried to answer all of your questions equally and not show preference for one over the other…pretty sure I lost some points though

The office building reminds me of the video game Control that came out a few years ago, the retro tech and imposing architecture.
I would never last a dinner party like that, it's like those people have completely disappeared up their own arses.

Okay so I am very much hooked. But it’s been a few days and I finally found this sub today, so my thoughts are boiling over:
-
If this severed thing was in real life, you can bet that I would be asking for a 6 figure salary MINIMUM, with a 20-30 hour work week. My outie only gets to experience the tired parts of Mon-Fri & the weekends? Nah. That’s not enough “work-life balance” for me. Also, finger traps and pie parties are not going to cut it as incentives.
-
WHATS GOING ON WITH THE FOOD. They apparently have it at the restaurant, they have really good looking sandwiches after the dinner party, but they don’t have dinner at the dinner party?
(The rest is me asking hypothetical questions about life as a severed person and how weird the whole thing would be)
3. I’m just imagining what it would be like to go through a body change like pregnancy or weight loss while working at Lumen on the severed floor. Like if I’m trying to lose weight, but I don’t know how to tell “innie” me what’s going on, and “outie” me doesn’t know if “innie” me is even following the rules. That sounds maddening.
4. Vacations for the “innie” person sound…. Confusing. You take a week off (or hell, take maternity leave) then come back to see that the dude next to you grew a beard in 5 minutes.
5. What happens if you have kids and your kid has an emergency in the middle of the day? Pretty sure it would be illegal to refuse to employ parents to avoid this issue, so I’m just wondering what that implies for the show.

I wonder if there's any significance to Mark and Petey both being sick: was Mark just sniffling and clearing his throat because he'd been crying, and that was a hint that Petey had been crying before work the day before? Or is there something else to it?

Petey’s not just sick, I think his brain is going to start leaking out of his nose.

I'm hooked. Can't wait to see where this goes. The not a dinner dinner scene absolutely enraged me with how pretentious they all were, though!
