Megathread Seattle Protests Resource Megathread
Hello /r/Seattle, I hope you're all staying safe and healthy!
This thread is temporarily replacing the weekly stickied events thread, and will serve as a single source of information about the current protests. We won't be forcing all posts to this thread (except for links to Facebook livestreams, which aren't typically allowed on reddit for privacy reasons), but this should at least reduce the repeated requests for the same information. Please add any resources or current protest information you want to share in the comments below.

Suggestion: can the post be edited to change the tiktok link in the general section of this post regarding how to stay safe during a tear gas attack, for the YouTube link which is more accessible.
Here it is: https://youtu.be/37rjkr2pHz0.
I wasn't able to see more than the introduction on tik tok because I don't have the tik tok app. No apps required with the YouTube link.

Looks like Sawant may have a key, and she let them in to have their own Town Hall. It's live on Woke right now.

What is the purpose of r/seattlewa and why does it seem that it’s way more right-leaning than this sub?
8
u/czarinna Jun 11 '20
A long time ago in a galaxy far far away, there was a mod who did things the users didn't like and banned people for what was deemed by many to be insufficient cause. Lots of users got real mad and made their own clubhouse and went over there. Eventually he was convinced to step down, and a few of us users (including me) were brought in to help replace him. Then there was no more beef, but the two clubhouses exist to this day, although one seems to be more conservative than the other.
The end.

A long time ago the head mod here was an asshole and banned people over really stupid shit. Bunch of people left and started r/SeattleWA . Then that sub's head mod let all the Trumpkins break their subs "rules" and do whatever they wanted without consequence. So bunch of people went and founded r/SeaWA.

I wrote up a list of what to wear/bring if that's okay to post?
If you are planning on joining the protests:
- A CAT (Combat Application Tourniquet) or a clotting gauze like QuikClot is the best way to stop bleeding from bullet wounds. If you have nothing else, tampons can be used as a last resort.
- If someone is bleeding, stay calm. Get them to safety as quickly as possible and then use a clean cloth or clothing to apply steady pressure. Seek medical attention.
- If someone is pepper sprayed or tear gassed and it is in their eyes/on their face, have them lean far forward and pour water down their face so it drips off onto the ground. If they’re upright and you pour water on their face to flush out their eyes, it will run down their forehead and into their eyes. Don't rub your eyes - it will rub more acid in.
- A 50% Maalox (magnesium hydroxide) and 50% water mix, in a spray bottle, can help with the pain from getting sprayed or gassed. Do NOT get the mint Maalox - it will hurt worse. Do not pour milk into your eyes (not sterile). Saline works best for flushing the eyes, then water. You can make your own saline solution at home:
o 4 cups of distilled or boiled water (boil for at least 20 minutes to sterilize the water)
o 2 teaspoons of non iodized salt. Do not use sea salt.
o Airtight storage container with a lid, like a spray bottle or water bottle/thermos.
o If you are sprayed or gassed, throw out the bottle that may have been contaminated. You don’t want to accidentally pour or touch pepper spray that’s on the outside of the bottle.- Wear clothes that are fitted (harder to grab) but not too tight. Wear long sleeves and pants to cover as much skin as possible. Wear multiple layers – you can take a layer off if you get sprayed/gassed. Or bring a change of clothes in a garbage bag. When taking off clothes that have pepper spray or tear gas on them, do not let the outside of the clothing touch your face/eyes – lift the clothes away from your face as you remove them.
- If you have FaceID on your phone, turn it off. Turn off fingerprints. Have your phone on a PIN or swipe lock only. Biometrics (facial recognition and fingerprints) can sometimes be used by police to access your phone.
- If you are taking video/pictures, have it automatically upload to the cloud.
- If you are not using your phone, turn it off. Even on airplane mode the GPS will still track your location, which can be used against you to prove you were at the protest. If possible, buy a burner phone.- In sharpie, write your emergency contact’s phone number and a phone number for legal help on your upper arm, stomach, or leg. If you are arrested and all your belongings are taken, you will still be able to contact your people.
Look up the National Lawyers Guild who can represent you if you are arrested; they have local numbers staffed by volunteers. Their Seattle number is 206-658-7963- Wear a bag or backpack with your supplies:
o Change of clothes including socks and underwear
o Umbrella
o Extra gloves and face mask. Hand sanitizer if you can get it
o Water, several bottles
o Snacks (trail mix, granola bars, protein bars)
o Bandages or clean towels/cloths
o A form of picture ID – the ACLU recommends you do keep your ID on you
o At least $50 cash if possible. In case you need to buy food, get a taxi, buy supplies.- On your body you should have:
o Face mask, the larger the covering the better. Remember that COVID is still very active.
o Bandanna around your neck to provide extra protection from tear gas.
o Goggles or eye shields. DO NOT WEAR CONTACT LENSES – this will trap tear gas underneath. Wear glasses instead.
o Helmet or head covering. Protect your head; a rubber bullet CAN be fatal if it hits you in the skull.
o Hair ties if you have long hair – put your hair up or under your helmet/hat so it can’t be grabbed.
o Gloves to protect your hands. Tear gas canisters are HOT.
o Sturdy shoes, preferably waterproof, something you can run in. You can use duct tape to cover up non waterproof shoes. If you get sprayed/gassed and rinse with water, it may run down your body and soak into your socks or shoes.6

Also wool socks are clutch for if your feet do end up getting wet inside your shoes. Wool dries faster than cotton or synthetics and will also prevent you from rubbing blisters.

This is an Instagram account of general protest tips and guides. Some of the topics are: COVID-19 and protesting, what to do if an officer asks you questions, tear gas treatment, etc. Nothing groundbreaking, but it's nice that all the info is collected into the same place.

Seattle City Council President recommendation and resource link to get CoViD-19 testing free. Applicable especially for any people with numerous close physical contacts. Protestors welcomed to ask for a test.

Given that nobody is social distancing at these things and it will likely lead to deaths of people who aren't involved in any way .....
I'd say that you have an onus to put some disclaimer there about COVID-19.
1
u/czarinna Jun 05 '20
I would say that everyone going out and participating has made their own risk analysis, and decided that not staying silent on policy brutality is more important to them than the risk of COVID. I do agree that it should be mentioned though, and have added an article to the General Resources section.

Are white people “allowed” in the Chop today? Rumors are abound...

u/czarinna Jun 19 '20
CHOP organizers have asked that white allies guard the perimeter and allow the space inside to be for black people from 8am-8pm for Juneteenth.

LMAO I can't believe there's an article titled: " Before you check in on your black friend, read this"
White liberal always need to feel like a savior to minorities like we're incapable of wiping our own asses without them. Just shows that white liberals are the real racists who look down on minorities as helpless and incompetent. We don't need you to give us and hug and tell us its going to be okay.
7
u/czarinna Jul 07 '20
Whether or not that's true, the point of the article is to encourage white people to do their own research rather than demanding their black friends educate them.

Would it be helpful to set up a network of scanner transcribers? I could transcribe sometimes but I'm still in school so I can't do it all the time. I've seen people do it in Twitter hashtags but it's not very organized. Let me know if you want to transcribe or if there are already people doing this, I wanna help!
20
u/ohsureguy Jun 04 '20
I’m in the exact same position, finishing up the quarter for school. I’m on Twitter and the scanners, but I’m not nearly as involved or engaged in the community as some of these other people (some groups work in shifts, etc).
But I’ve seen a need for people like you and me to listen to the scanner, AND LIKE AND RETWEET INFORMATION THAT YOU HEARD TOO. Throw weight behind information that you can PERSONALLY VERIFY. There are misinformation accounts. Call them out. Look into post histories. Report suspicious accounts.
They’re working fast so sometimes there are errors or they mishear. Reply and politely correct. I’m overly aware of my tone as people are already tense enough.
It feels incredibly small, but then someone on the ground calls out the scanner people and it’s like “oh, shit. Ok this is actually helping them!!”
8
u/93daysofsummer Jun 04 '20
Thanks for replying! I haven't done this before but I have experience in transcription in general. It sounds like there's a small community already that could use some organization. People could fill roles of rough transcription, transcription checking/formatting, and disinformation management. Could even develop a schedule so that people aren't overworked or trying to find info from too many sources.
I'm not part of this community at the moment, but I'd love to make a website, or help however you need it. Same goes for you u/LiedAboutKnowingMe

hey, i'm not from seattle just lurking here for news on the chaz. anyway, if you're doing any kind of organizing i would not recommend discord as it is not encrypted. i'd recommend looking into keybase, which is like an encrypted version. or signal if your group is not very big. also, for anyone getting a network of people together, consider using and contributing to scanmaps, a new mapping site to keep track of police movements and other things. cheers

I just got a $12 settlement from some insurance class action that I barely remember dropped into my pay pal. I just put it in the Seattle bail fund. I felt really good. You should do it too. Fuck the police

Premera blue cross. They had all of their information stolen - social security numbers, credit cards etc. it was basically equifax. I got mine too.
12 dollars for potential identify theft for life. Awesome.

u/ThetaMeBitch Jun 12 '20
''Fuck the police'' he says. Having donated $12. ''Fuck the police.''
I am all for protesting and civil liberties.
But jesus christ the number of good cops out weights bad 1000 to 1.
How you can actually say ''fuck the police'' is beyond me.
9
u/beefbabie Jun 13 '20
You are either delusional or completely ignorant if your truly believe that there are that many good cops. Myself and thousands of others have NEVER felt safe around cops. Never. We say fuck the police because even the “good cops” are not good. They are only “good” by comparison to the sack of shits that murder members of society and get away with it. They do not try to stop police brutality. They might say “they shouldn’t have done that” but they do not report them or take a stand. The “good cops” are trained to believe that everything they are doing is right, that their violence is “necessary.” So even when a cop is not obviously racist or abusive with their power, they still DO NOT acknowledge their hidden biases. The standard for a good cop should not be so low that all they have to do is not murder someone.
FUCK THE POLICE.

I pulled together this guide!

- A CAT (Combat Application Tourniquet) or a clotting gauze like QuikClot is the best way to stop bleeding from bullet wounds. If you have nothing else, tampons can be used as a last resort.

[anything but water] can help with the pain from getting sprayed or gassed.
NO
Only use saline/water to treat Riot Control Agents.
Liquid antacid does not belong in the eyes, and although rare, ingredients in antacids may cause an allergic reaction. Research on pain relief provided by topical application of antacid is mixed.
- riotmedicine.orgAlthough, as an addendum to that:
Some medics swear by this treatment and are going to use it regardless of what this book says. The following two tips will make its use safer. The antacid should be free of flavor and color additives. The only ingredients should be magnesium hydroxide, aluminum hydroxide, and magnesium-aluminum hydroxide.

"bullet wounds" why would you ever in a million years lead with that tip, let alone put it in? The cops aren't shooting anyone and for you to imply that's a likely scenario will do nothing but scare people who might have showed up away

Bring ID, cash. Leave all your cards at home. Bring extra contacts or wear glasses, and layers of clothes, a rain coat. There's a ton of supplies like water and food being distributed but keeping yourself comfortable should be your main priority. Wear insoles or other comfortable shoes for walking/standing for long periods of time.
Keep an eye on the people around you, if anyone looks nervous talk with them and help de-escalate. Watch to make sure no one is throwing stuff. Have fun, connect and help create change. :)
Bonus round: If you are in a marginalized community, or worried you may be targeted, use signal to communicate or another similar app. Turn off your phone when out or leave it at home.
6
u/creativelyuncreative Jun 04 '20
Do NOT wear contact lenses, this can trap tear gas underneath and worsen irritation. Not to mention that you can't exactly remove the contacts if your hands are covered in pepper spray or tear gas. Wear glasses instead, under goggles if you can.

u/DrDabington Jun 04 '20
if anyone looks nervous talk with them and help de-escalate
Don't bother people if they're nervous, you're likely to make them more nervous. Everyone protests in their own way. Being nervous is not "escalating"

Plain clothes cops in crowd
Just got back home from protest on cap hill. I didn't intend to stay long, just to drop off supplies. Then I saw some guys who struck me as out of place. A few white guys. The didn't join in with the cheers. They all stood like in a power pose. All wearing ballcaps. I started to think they were cops, so I watched them for quite a while. One or two would do a little patrol and then come back to the same spot, middle of street on Pine about 50 feet behind the crowd.
Update: descriptions
One guy has red shoes green vest black hat. He actually has two cell phones and checks both. I figure one is for work and the other is personal. Blue mask.. I think. 5'11 I'd say. White guy. When he took off hat I noticed a buzz cut.
Another guy is also white. Very little dude. Red bandana over face. Also has a cap but didn't always wear it. Short haircut as well.
I observed him and the other guy stand like 10 feet from each other, never said a word. Then at same time took two different routes to rendezvous with third guy.
Third guy is a bit taller. Maybe 6'2. White. I didnt watch him much.
Update2: sorry I didn't have a chance to take pics. Phone was dead. I did point these guys out to some folks who were filming/streaming. Most were appreciative and agreed the three guys were a bit fishy. I also told some other kids (white kids) and they told me to fuck off. Not sure why they wouldn't want a heads up. Of course I could be completely wrong about these three straight laced white dudes who didn't join in any of the chants and kept wandering through the crowds and coming back and chatting it up. <Shrug> Oh yeah, they were also regularly looking around, over their shoulders and stuff.

u/shittydiks Jun 04 '20

It sounds like you’re talking about my brother. He’s in the National Guard and was ordered to go support the lines. He and a couple of other guys decided to join the protests beforehand because they support the cause.
Not everyone who looks military/official and decides to be on our side of the fence is an enemy.

I just got back from the march and I have to say it was one of the most positive demonstrations I have ever been to. I was shocked to see the police did not follow us as we left. This was my first night out since this all started but I've been to many past demonstrations in Seattle and this is the first time I've seen the police leave us completely alone. It was amazing to not have that feeling of being corralled, or told where to go. It was completely up to the organizers. Overall very positive. Hope it stays that way the rest of the night. Keep it up everybody. Stay safe. Black lives matter.
