Mod Post Community Guidelines & Advisory System

Hi all! As many may have noticed, the subreddit has more than doubled in the last year, with a lot of growth in just the last couple months.

In order to participate in this subreddit- there is a requirement to both be kind to other members and to scorpions as a whole. Identification and help threads have recently had an uptick in "joke" identifications/advice that can be exceptionally risky when dealing with potentially medically significant animals. We have updated our rules to be more clear, we will be more focused on ensuring that folks remain civil and kind, and now, we are rolling out an advisory system.

We are currently rolling out the Qualified Advisor system. Qualified Advisors (QAs) are folks that have a solid handle on the hobby, and are focused on evidence based care and advisories. They will be responsible for giving critical and accurate advice within the "help" and "identification" flairs. There will be restrictions and guidelines for partaking in these flairs from hereon.

These responsibilities should also fall onto members partaking in animal care advice within this sub; because of that, we will be enforcing a disclaimer system for all non QAs. On every "help" and "identification" thread this will be explained, and is explained below.

If you wish to give advice or share information on this sub as a non QA, you will be required to preface your comments/advice in the "help" and "identification" flaired posts with a disclaimer; such as, "Not QA, NQA, IME (in my experience), IMO (in my opinion), I believe, Question, NA (not advice)". If you do not preface your commentary for these flairs, the comment will be deleted and you will be prompted to repost it with the appropriate preface. Posts related to medical or veterinary advice are not permitted and will be removed per this post.

If you have any questions about the new advisory system- please send us a modmail, do not use other unrelated posts as a platform for those concerns or questions. If you would like to apply for QA, feel free to reach out to us via modmail

EDIT: This is now fully live as of 7/11 on Help and Identification threads.

Stopped eating weeks before disappearing and also plugged up burrow so likely moulting however she didn’t seem plump at all and also a month is a long time for a moult I think so what’s the deal here. What should I do bc I’m worried she’s trapped or died in the burrow.

Help! Is this normal behavior?

Post image

For some reason he’s tucked into the corner instead of in a hide. Humidity is good and it’s 80°f currently. He has 2 hides to choose from, one tighter cork bark hide and a bigger coconut shell hide. This is my first scorpion so this could be normal behavior but this strikes me as odd, like he looks uncomfortable?

I mist the enclosure (not heavily) every 6-8 days, and drop a cricket in every week. The feigning death beetles end up eating the body after it dries up. Just wondering when I should start to worry about my scorpion. I don’t see any obvious burrows but there’s multiple hides in the enclosure that go into the ground so he could have a hidden burrow.

Help! Quick questions about my L3/L4 Gigantometrus swammerdami (Asian Giant Forest Scorpion) - newbie

Hey guys, I’ve got an L3/L4 Gigantometrus swammerdami (molted about 3 weeks ago). He’s been hiding in his burrow for a few days now and I haven’t seen him out at all.

Just had a few quick questions:

  1. Feeding: I started leaving pre-killed crickets right outside his burrow so he learns to come out to eat. Is this the best approach for a shy youngster, or should I be doing something else?
  2. Springtails: My bioactive setup has a solid springtail population. Will they compete for the pre-killed feeder or bother the scorpion if the population gets too high?
  3. Hydration: I know they get most of their water from prey and high humidity, but do you guys actually see your young Gigantometrus drinking directly from a shallow water dish?

Parameters & Setup:

  • Substrate: A mix of tarantula soil and coco fiber.
  • Humidity: Around 78–95%.
  • Temperature & Enclosure: The little guy is in a typical small faunarium box sitting inside his future adult enclosure. It rests in the warmer half of the main tank, with just the end of the box reaching the boundary between the warm and cool zones. I measure the main enclosure using two probes: a soil probe in the warm zone showing 27–28.5°C, and a sensor on the side wall in the cool zone hovering between 23 and 25.8°C.

Any tips or experience with this species at this stage would be awesome i can add some photos, but last time i did it my post got deleted by reddit filters (might be because of skull inside of the main enclosure).

Help! I need help with my Hadrurus Arizonensis.

This is the best picture I have of him (black light was used because I didn’t want to flashbang him with my cameras flash). I’ve had him for a little over a month, he’s been eating fine (once every 5-7 days), and has dug a decently sized burrow (4 inch substrate). As of tonight his behavior has changed, he’s started to try and climb the corners of his tank and he won’t stop, only momentarily going back into his burrow to dig a little more before repeating, with the way it looks, he might be stressed about something or unfamiliar with something. I do know that my little brother, when he was watching him for a few days, let a mealworm escape, so there is likely a mealworm in his tank somewhere I just don’t want to break his tunnels searching for it, any advice would be GREATLY appreciated, I love this guy too much to let him stress himself to death

Help! Emperor scorpion questions

Hi guys! I have an emperor scorpion, I got him August 18. He's maybe 1-1.5in, hasn't molted (I don't think) since I got him. He eats pretty good, I feed him a mealworm/cricket 1-2x a week. Is he too fat? Is his growth rate normal? I haven't found a lot of in depth information on their growth rate online. He's in a 6x4x4 approx. with 3" of substrate. I have half his enclosure on top of one of my LED lights which gets warm, not hot, maybe 85f. Pictured is him now, his enclosure, and when I got him (he was in a smaller enclosure that I've since upgraded). He also never goes outside of his little tunnel under the cork bark that I know of. Any advice would be helpful!

Casual Seeking advice from other people who have raised desert hairies

I got my first scorpion today, a juvenile h arizonensis, and have done lots of research and found a lot of information, often contradictory. From it though I ended up giving her a 10 gallon tank, with about 6 1/2 inches of substrate, a mix of sand and eco earth. Recognizing that they’re a desert species, but their molting issues seems to stem from lack of moisture, I’m giving her a moist corner of the enclosure alongside a water bowl, hopefully to prevent those issues. Just hoping this all seems right, thank you.

My desert hairy unknown age has been agitated lately. I think she ate the 3 dubia roaches I gave her ~10-14 days ago but since she was agitated I didn’t feed anymore. Her tank has been consistently >70°F and humidity <55%. She is about 3-3.5” in length and has been in this position on the warmer side of my tank for >24 hours. She has been twitching and moving her tail around slightly at the what seems to be about the same energy level. I don’t see any cracks in the exoskeleton but it’s also hard to see. I don’t know what is happening and I don’t know what to do.

“Gordy” - a Florida Bark Scorpion I kept as a pet for a few years. I was thinking about him because my family recently bought a house, and I have removed three scorpions in three months. I’d keep one as a pet, but I would be too worried of an accident with the small children. But, I sure enjoy watching them.

Hi everyone! This fella was found in Caracas, Venezuela, next to my husband's night stand. Thankfully, we were not stung. It was caught alive and handed to the Venezuelan Institute for Scientific Research to get the antidote. They are very common in the area, so I just wanted to know what kind they are and whether they are poisonous. Thank you!

Help! My Florida bark stung me is she ok?

Post image

(Pic of her is from a while ago not at all recent to when she stung me which was today)

My Florida bark scorpion stung me just a few minutes ago and I’m worried that it stressed her out. What happened thinking back on it now was really stupid on my part. When I mist her enclosure sometimes she is sitting on top of her hide and whenever I mist her she runs back into her hide and I think she really doesn’t like it so today I saw she was out and thought maybe if I cover her I won’t get her wet and covered her with my hand ( it wasn’t like on top of her it was like a good 3 inches above her but she stung me anyways. In the future I’ll try and use something else to cover her because what was I thinking using my hand but still I want to make sure she’s ok.
