I'm Georgian, a solo Android dev and a student in the EU. I learned English from zero just by watching anime with subtitles for 4 years, so this year I built an app that teaches Chinese the same way: real videos, and you tap any word you don't know.
While building it I realized I wanted to make the country I was born in proud. Georgian has its own alphabet and its own language family, and there's still no Duolingo for it. So I built one for Georgian. It's called Kakhi, after my grandpa, a proud Georgian.
In the app he's the one teaching you: a cartoon grandpa who pulls up a chair and says gaumarjos when you hit your goals (the video is his intro).
How it works:
- 550+ short videos from Georgian YouTubers: cooking, markets, travel, everyday talk
- Georgian subtitles with romanization over every word and English under every line
- tap any word: what it means in that sentence, its dictionary form, and what the ending does (-แจแ = in)
- Kakhi says every word out loud, slowly too
- watching is free, no account (there's an optional Premium for unlimited look-ups and flashcards)
It's on Google Play as "Kakhi: Learn Georgian" (Android).
Honest bits: Android only for now, and the app itself is in English. I'm sure you'll find mistakes in the subtitles; tell me and I'll fix them. And if one of the videos is yours and you'd rather it wasn't in the app, say so and it's gone.
๏ปฟI honestly don't know how many people want to learn Georgian, but I'm proud of this one. Any comments are welcome, especially from native speakers. The mods kindly said it's OK to share the link, so here it is (it only went live today, so Google Play search doesn't show it yet): https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.kakhi.app
