I'm going to create mods to legal stages to try out at some small locals, and I'm looking for ideas and thoughts on what would be good to try. I'm also emphasizing mods that could, in theory, be run at a bigger tournament without Nintendo throwing a fuss. But this is mostly just for fun and to mix things up.

What I have so far:

• Pokémon stadium transformation probabilities change: 90% grass, 8% water, 1% rock and fire
• Fountain of dreams platforms vanish (and stay vanished) as quickly as possible
• Fountain of dreams platforms vanish rise to max height (and stay there) as quickly as possible
• Fountain of dreams typical movements, but fixed to move at predetermined times in a set pattern

The above FoD mods could be individually toggled in-game.

More controversial things we could try:

• Change the collision box on Battlefield's ledge to purely vertical, so that you no longer "get battlefielded"
• Remove all of the invisible lips that stop you running in a straight line during Pokémon stadium transformations

You don't know how to play the character, you just have a punish flowchart.

You don't have any reads, you just run an algorithm in certain situations. If falco (yes) > is enemy about to tech in corner (yes) > wavedash back (always).

You also don't have any ledge trap reads, your opponent just can't execute any meaningful mixups.

What you call pressure is just flinging yourself at the opponent, you even try to hit your opponents shield which entirely misses the point.

Just because you beat people with a mid-low tier, doesn't mean you're good at the game. They just don't know the situations and frame data to punish you.

You don't play positions, you play, 'can I hit my opponent'.

You don't have a style, you just run down the list of greediest options until one of them works.

You don't have a neutral game, you just cycle through the same options over and over.

These days, joining a local Discord community is the best way to find local events and people to play with. Once you have a Discord account, Google "[your city/state/province/region] + Melee discord" or see if your region has a Discord group listed here on melee.tv/discord

It can seem daunting at first to join a Discord group you don't know, but this is currently the easiest and most accessible way to find out about tournaments, fests, and netplay matchmaking. Your local scene will be happy to have you :)

Netplay is hard! Is there a place for me to find new players?

Yes. Melee Newbie Netplay is a discord server specifically for new players. It also has tournaments based on how long you've been playing, free coaching, and other stuff. If you're a bit more experienced but still want a discord server for players around your level, we recommend the Melee Online discord.

How can I set up Unclepunch's Training Mode?

At the time of posting, the latest major release is here. Download the file, then extract everything in the folder and follow the instructions in the README file. You'll need to bring a valid Melee ISO (NTSC 1.02). If you want to check for the absolute latest release, you can see them listed [here](The latest releases are listed here.

How does one learn Melee?

There are tons of resources out there, so it can be overwhelming to start. First check out the SSBM Tutorials youtube channel. Then go to the Melee Library and search for whatever you're interested in.

I know the decomp was completed recently which opened up some new modding possibilities. Now I keep seeing screenshots/allusions to all these cool looking new mods (e.g. native PC port, 3D melee, etc). Where do you guys find this stuff? Is there a discord or something?

Yoshi's already has a chaotic element with Randall (which I love, shoutouts to Randall). The stage has more than enough identity with its unique platforms, slanted ledge, close blastzones, walls to jump off, etc.

Shyguys are a huge nerf to characters that depend on combos to keep up with the meta, like peach and luigi. Random amounts of shyguys on a random timer, which randomly cause up to a full second of hitlag, with the number of SDI inputs being wildly inconsistent depending on the direction and fluctuation of the shyguy wave, which changes the trajectory opponents are launched in bizarre ways. It's like releasing pokemon in a competitive match.

Meanwhile Fox doesn't give a shit about almost any of that because he can blow past a shyguy wall and do a frame 1 shine the moment he's past them. Or he can just throw out a hitbox after he rapidly positions himself inside the character he wants to hit so it overlaps and the extra hitlag becomes inconsequential. If he hits a shyguy on the way down, it doesn't matter because his fastfall and vertical jumps are incredibly fast. Meanwhile any character that relies on a swinging arc like falcons upair just get reversaled for trying to tech chase on this stage due to complete randomness.

In before "they're Fly Guys, not Shy Guys". They are shy guys with a propeller hat. Wearing a hat doesn't make you a different character or change your name.

I've been trying to make a custom melee build adding the MK Characters and probably Steve too, using ACE 2.0.0 as a base since it has a lot of cool characters, but when i load the mex project files it just forces it to be 1.0.0 without adding the new characters, and it doest include them in the files in any way, even if i try to export it as an ISO with the MK Characters the loading bar just stays frozen, any step am i missing or am i doing something wrong?

Whenever I try to load up a game of unranked, I get stuck on the “connecting to opponent” prompt for around 20 seconds, then changes to “searching for opponent.” These two prompts cycle and I’m never able to actually get into a match. I recently moved into a new apartment and have 5G internet. I tried to bypass this with a vpn, but still no luck. Any solutions?

With some tournaments this year having 1k viewers not watching the main stream, I’ve been pondering this lately. I’m curious if there are any streamers/TOs on this subreddit willing to share thoughts?

I have this recollection that back in the day, broadcasters cracked down harder on watch party streams, and it really helped viewership be centralized to one big tournament stream.

Did it actually used to be that way, or am I just misremembering, and watch parties have always been around in the same capacity? (or there weren’t as many streamers anyway)

I will not have access to melee for about 3 months, but I will have access to a PS5. I have always wanted to learn a traditional fighting game, so I figure now is as good a time as any.

Does anyone have any recommendations for PS5 as someone who has been playing melee for 13 years (geez) and has never seriously touched any other FGs? I do already own Guilty Gear Strive, but if there is something else that people swear by (decent community size, easy to learn, etc.) I am happy to spend some cashola.

Also, any tips in general in adjusting to the differences between Melee and FGs?

Hey, not sure if this is allowed but basically I’d be willing to spend like I don’t know 50-100 bucks on a modded controller or whatever. I main Luigi so I don’t think notches would be necessary, but I also play Fox so may as well.

Basically, I play like once a week, so I don’t need to go all out or anything, but it’s frustrating when I get punished for light shielding when I press Z instead of grabbing like every game. I feel like a modded controller would fix that. For reference, I’m using the same controller I’ve been using for 20 years.

I’ve heard pro players say that it’s basically impossible to play with a shitty controller, and I’m wondering how much better I would be with like a decent controller. I also don’t even know all the kinds of mods aside from something with the trigger and notches, which is why I want to just buy a controller where someone else did all the work buffing it up.

I bought a JP 2008 whiteshell like 5 years ago and I dont remember the controller having too many issues, but as I've picked the game back up and dusted off the rust I am noticing incredibly consistent input problems that just dont make sense to me.

I am doing sidesmashes and constantly end up doing down smashes, I am constantly attacking in the wrong direction, I am constantly hitting shorthop only for nothing to happen.

Usually I'll blame the misinput on myself, but it is happening WAY too frequently for me to think its just misinputs on my end. Just the other day I side smashed and 6 different times and it did a down smash every time. I have literally been playing this game since I was in diapers, 20+ years of playing and I have never had problems like the ones I am having right now.

In any other game I can very clearly tell when I misinput, in tekken or rocket league I always tell exactly what wrong button I pressed or how I titled the stick wrong and understand why it didnt work but recently in melee I am left incredibly frustrated trying to gauge is it me or is the controller?

I'm at the point where I'm about to buy a b0xx just so I know without a doubt every inconsistency is on me and not the controller. Is there some sort of diagnostic tools where I can say just repeatedly do the same input and it can tell me clearly if there is snapback or other similar issues?

Hey so ive have been using my B0XX for about two months now, and at a local I went to yesterday, my controller stopped working on the Wii setups; after taking a look at it, I ordered a new cable which arrived today, but it still doesn't work. What i find weird is that it works fine on my PC through a USB-C to USB-C cable, but both my old and new GameCube to USB-C cables don't seem to work. Yall have any suggestions?

I liked this one it had that style I loved seeing the pros do back in the day, even remember Toph saying he loves the Ken combos where the kind of pass them with the Fair but then drift back with the djDair.
