At UC Riverside Conference, Latino Storytellers Challenge Hollywood to go Beyond Representation

After a screening of the 1994’s “...y no se lo trago la tierra,” a movie about a migrant family and their struggles as farmworkers through the eyes of a child, I was left wondering when the Latinx community will stop being fruit pickers on the big screen.

These types of films capture the struggle of the first generation of the Latinx experience in the States. But, who is the voice of the second generation? What’s the best film or television series that captures the Latinx experience of the children of those farmworkers, or even the generation after that?

Before the film, Severo Perez, the film’s director and screenwriter, had a conversation with Luis Valdez, a playwright and screenwriter, about being a Latinx creator within the limits of Hollywood. It was the 38th annual Tomás Rivera Conference, a public forum that reflects on the contributions of the Latinx community across the arts at the University of California, Riverside.

I don’t think anyone has truly captured the angst, the struggle and the emotional distress that have come from being the children of immigrants, and it is not a representation problem, Valdez said.

I just found out only three Wigwam Villages are still standing in the whole country, and one is on Foothill Boulevard

I just found out only three Wigwam Villages are still standing in the whole country, and one of them is on Foothill Boulevard.

Frank Redford came up with the Wigwam Village idea, and he built this one himself. Seven villages were built in all. Two of the three survivors sit on Route 66, and this is one of them. Nineteen wigwams stand on the lot, it straddles the line between Rialto and San Bernardino, and it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

It's one of those places that looks like a movie set until you realize people sleep there.

Have you ever spent a night in one, or only driven past and wondered?

Community Ichi sushi?

Trying to plan a first date, something more casual for dinner. I saw ichi has new ownership and looks nicer on the interior but they don’t have many reviews posted still. Any recommendations? Otherwise maybe a solid Thai or Korean or Vietnamese spot? Gal pal has some gluten sensitivities but doesn’t have celiac so she can tolerate in small amounts. Thanks in advance!!

Arlington Flag Football Falls to Santa Fe in Historic CIF Home Game

A crowd of classmates, friends and family packed the stands at Arlington High School on Tuesday night as the girls flag football team played its first CIF game in program history. Trailing 6-0 after Santa Fe scored a touchdown before halftime, Arlington remained within striking distance for the rest of the game.

Coach Michael Zaremba relied on his All-League players as the Lions attempted a comeback. Sophomore Cadence McKee was a constant target of the quarterback, senior Phoenix Martinez ran the ball up the field, and Isabella Ortiz contributed at quarterback and safety. Unfortunately, the offense just couldn’t get past the red zone.

The Lions fell to the Sentinels, 6-0, in front of a rambunctious home crowd led by the Arlington boys baseball team.

“I’m really proud of the way that the girls came out,” Zaremba said. “They played with heart and intensity the entire game. We had our opportunities on both sides of the field.”

Does anyone remember the metal band Buttermaker Click from Riverside? They played the 'nu-metal' style during the early 2000s and released a few CDs. I'm searching for those CDs to get them properly archived. Did anyone here have any of them or know where I could find them? I've talked to band members who are all out. Thank you. Anything helps.

Tuesday’s home game against Santa Fe at 5 p.m. marks the first CIF playoff appearance in program history, a milestone senior Phoenix Martinez said the team has worked hard to achieve.

“I think we deserve it,” she said.

Martinez has seen the program grow since her freshman year, when it was first introduced. Even after finishing her season with 1,217 rushing yards, 1,047 receiving yards and 18 touchdowns, she still can’t believe how far they’ve come.

“We’ve come a long way and definitely improved a lot since I joined the team,” she said.

Everyone should show up and support these girls on their first CIF game!

Hello, I recently grabbed this table left out for free on a curb. When cleaning it, I flipped it over and noticed it has a wood brand that looks like it’s supposed to say riverside, and sole numbers. Anyone have any ideas on what these could be for?
