Politics Can someone explain why the RI Fraternal Order of Police would endorse a J6 insurrectionist who stormed the capitol, and participated in the beating of cops, for RI Senate?

Discussion Thomas Jefferson’s opinion of Rhode Island

I’m reading Six Frigates - The Epic History of the founding of the US Navy, by Ian Toll. It’s an excellent read so far. But then I got to this passage about Thomas Jefferson, who had absolutely gutted and dismantled the navy that John Adams had built during the previous presidency. He was talking about our lil state! I felt a tad betrayed to be fair, as I drive down Jefferson Blvd every day and always assumed he liked us 😂

Here’s the passage:
Jefferson believed America’s destiny lay in the west, in the settlement and cultivation of the interior. If foreign trade had to be tolerated, it was to be tolerated only as a necessary evil. He distrusted the merchants of the northern seaports, thought them inherently less patriotic than many of their countrymen, and was determined to reduce their influence in politics. “Merchants have no country,” he later wrote. “The mere spot they stand on does not constitute so strong an attachment as that from which they draw their gains.” When living in Paris in 1786, Jefferson had been asked to assist the editors of the Encyclopédie méthodique in preparing the entries on the American states. His comments on Rhode Island had been uncharacteristically blunt, possibly because he feared any ambiguity would be lost in translation:
The cultivators of the earth are the most virtuous citizens and possess most of the amor patriae [love of country]. Merchants are the least virtuous, and possess the least of the amor patriae. The latter reside principally in the seaport towns; the former in the interior country. Now it happened that of the territory constituting Rhode Island and Connecticut, the part containing useful seaports was erected into a state by itself and called Rhode Island, and that containing the interior country was erected into another State called Connecticut, for though it has a little seacoast, there are no good ports in it. Hence it happens that there is scarcely one merchant in the whole state of Connecticut, while there is not a single man in Rhode Island who is not a merchant of some sort. Because it was not much more than 1,000 square miles and had hardly any agriculture, Jefferson added, Rhode Island did not deserve the status of a state. He predicted that it would eventually be expelled from the Union or merged into Connecticut.

Discussion I-295 South Mile Marker 5

• Upvotes

The slowdown the happens every morning on 295 south at mile marker 5 because of the sun going over the hill is absurd. It’s like it’s someone’s first time seeing the sun, instead of using their sun visor these morons just get flash-banged by the sun and slam on their brakes to slowdown to 20mph. The amount of helpless morons on our highways is infuriating.

Question / Suggestion Seeking Sewing Scissor sharpening

I’m looking for a place to get my sewing scissors sharpened now that Joann’s is closed. I checked with my local Ace (that does sharpening) they only do knives.

Can anyone recommend someone or a store in the area? I’m only seeing one result on yelp and that person has very mixed reviews. Thanks :)

Question / Suggestion Tenant rights when landlord is selling

Hi! Does anyone know the specific rules in RI for right of entry when a landlord puts your building on the market? I’m month-to-month, so guessing I don’t have much room to negotiate, but I really hate having buyers walking through my apartment on the weekends and evenings. It also makes me uneasy that it’s just the realtor and no one who works for the landlord supervising. My understanding is they have to give 48 hours notice but is there a limit to when or how often they can come in? Does my landlord or his employee have to be present? Can I make private spaces off limits?

Question / Suggestion Is there anywhere I can get non-frozen very thin shaved steak or pork belly or whatever, for hot pot? The only ones we can find are frozen and chewy

I checked a place called sandy lane meat market and they didn’t have any, I also checked at stop and shop to see if the meat people could do it but they couldn’t and they did have some but it was frozen, and the Asian market I know of (I think it’s called good fortune or something) has a good selection but it’s all frozen rock solid and tastes super chewy. We have really good hot pot soup bases to use but no good meat to put in it.

I tried to cut up some beef from a roast or something once myself making it as thin as possible but my knives are cheap and bad and I couldn’t quite get a technique down so it was kind of sad and pathetic.

Discussion RI driving PSA

  1. The left lane is for passing only. If you're not actively passing someone, move over. Visual cues: if someone is behind you and there is no one in front of you, plus you're not passing another vehicle, move over.

  2. Follow the rules of the road (Right of Way). Do not stop to let someone go, or wave someone out if you are driving straight. Just drive. It's dangerous and is causing more stop and go traffic. Do not stop unless you have a stop sign, red light, a vehicle stopped in front of you, a school bus, an animal crossing, a hazard, or are stopping for a pedestrian to cross.

  3. Do not wave cars on at a 4-way-stop. Whoever arrived at the intersection and stopped first goes first. If you arrive at the same time, the vehicle to the right goes first.

  4. Slow down, use caution, and be prepared to stop with a yield sign. Yield signs are not stop signs nor are they green arrows.

  5. Stop texting and driving. But if you are too selfish and unwilling to stop, at least get out of the left lane.

What did I miss? Add your own in the comments.

Discussion RI pprty mngt Brady Sullivan Reviews

**Problems at 75 Pocasset Mill (Brady Sullivan Properties), Johnston, RI**

From the outside, 75 Pocasset Mill looks great. Inside, it's a different story.

- **Mold:** Several units have what appears to be mold, and one unit we know of has tested positive. Management's response was a basic surface cleaning and painting over the moisture in the walls, without fixing the source.

- **Pests:** Multiple units have cockroach infestations, and the rats around the property are alarmingly large.

- **Rules not enforced:** Management doesn't enforce property rules or lease terms. Parking in particular is a mess.

- **Front office:** In my experience, the front desk staff member and their supervisor are a major reason residents here are unhappy. Their lack of professionalism has to be seen to be believed. They chose to let certain units do what they want. It's clearly stated in the lease that there's no subletting but certain units are allowed to sublet, but it's on the DL between the front desk and the unit. But if another unit inquires about subletting they get immediately rejected. I recently heard that when individuals go into the office to odge a complaint or discuss something, they're immediately removed from the office. Recently, I heard that somebody was banned from the office and from talking to any employees of Brady Sullivan while they're living in their property.

In my view, the root of these problems is management, and I suspect this isn't limited to this one property.

If you live here or at another Brady Sullivan property, I'd like to hear about your experience.

What the actual hell is up with Providence parking. It’s either extremely expensive or you park on the streets and it’s dirt cheap. No offense but I’m not paying $40 to park in a shady lot.

Question / Suggestion oil prices? should i ditch Petro?

Bought our house last fall and was signed up with Petro for auto delivery for oil to heat the house. Went fine last year.

We’re expecting a refill this week and it just struck me that I should probably shop around for prices. I’m sure they’re all super high right now though 😅 but I saw an old thread saying Petro consistently charges higher than other places

Who do you use? Should I ditch or stick with Petro?

I’m in south county if that matters.
