Spotting/Bleeding: "Is this normal" or "am I having a miscarriage"

Hi all,

We have noticed an influx of posts (including pictures) of bleeding/spotting at various points of pregnancy, often asking "is this normal" or "am I having a a miscarriage"

Obviously pregnancy is a time just full of anxiety and unknowns. However we want to be very careful not to slip into medical advice. We would hate for someone to be unnecessarily worried or reassured based on advice given on this sub.

As a general rule OP will be signposted to this post.

  1. Nobody is able to tell you if you are having a miscarriage. Unfortunately spotting (and bleeding) can be a feature of both normal pregnancies and miscarriage.

https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC11806467/

https://www.babycenter.com/pregnancy/your-body/vaginal-bleeding-or-spotting-during-pregnancy_3081

  1. Bleeding in pregnancy can be due to changes in the vasculature of the uterus and cervix, or due to hormonal cases. https://www.nhs.uk/pregnancy/common-symptoms/vaginal-bleeding/

https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/symptoms/22044-bleeding-during-pregnancy

  1. In the majority of cases, especially in early (<12 week) pregnancy, there is nothing that can be done about a threatened miscarriage***. You may get medical advice to "wait it out" at home, which may be cruel but may also be your only option. Unfortunately some providers seem to be more empathetic than others :(

*** NHS and tommy's guideline state that if you have an intrauterine pregnancy and history of at least 1 previous miscarriage (early miscarriage including chemical) and you are bleeding in current pregnancy, then you should be prescribed progesterone pessaries as they might reduce the chance of miscarriage.

https://www.tommys.org/baby-loss-support/miscarriage-information-and-support/pregnancy-after-miscarriage/taking-progesterone-early-pregnancy

"If you have had 1 or 2 miscarriages, taking progesterone in early pregnancy may increase your chances of having a successful pregnancy by 5%. If you have had 3 or more miscarriages (recurrent miscarriage), taking progesterone in early pregnancy may increase your chances of having a successful pregnancy by 15%."

https://www.bmj.com/content/375/bmj.n2896

"Progesterone should be offered to women who experience bleeding in early pregnancy and have previously had a miscarriage, the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) has recommended"

If you should be eligible for progesterone please try advocate for yourself (or ask your partner to) and ask for EPU referral and progesterone.

  1. If you are worried about abnormal bleeding, please:

* Call your midwife

* Call your maternity triage

* Contact your GP

* Call 111 for advice

* Visit your local EPU (early pregnancy unit). They may have rules on who they can or can't see (for example, you may have to be over 12 weeks, or they only see people on weekdays).

A&E is a bit hit and miss depending on your trust, some hospitals are very dedicated whilst others will tell you to come back another time, or tell you that you need to be seen by maternity in a week, for example

  1. Red flags that mean you need attention now:

"You're pregnant and bleeding and:

*You have severe pain in your tummy (you cannot focus on TV, read a book or do daily tasks because of the pain)

*you have pain in your shoulder

*you feel sick, faint, dizzy or lose consciousness

the bleeding is heavy (soaking a period pad soon after putting it on)"

https://www.nhs.uk/pregnancy/common-symptoms/vaginal-bleeding/

CALL 999

  1. Please know that in the case of an early miscarriage: it is not your fault. In the vast majority of cases miscarriage is due to random chance caused by some genetic error in early development. There is nothing you did, or nothing you could have done to prevent it. Please seek therapy or counselling if you are struggling 🫶

We will be closely monitoring any posts, especially those with pictures, and making sure nobody is receiving comments that could be construed as medical advice.

Edit: other subs that count be useful: r/cautiousBB r/AskDocs

Please NSFW your mucus/discharge photos!

Hello all, we have seen a recent influx in mucus plugs/discharge posts. Just a reminder to mark as NSFW all photos containing any bodily fluids. Not nice to see for those just scrolling by! Please report to mods any not marked. Also, to signpost resources for frequently asked questions:

I have increased discharge, is this normal?

"Yes. It is normal to have more vaginal discharge in pregnancy. This helps prevent any infections travelling up from the vagina to the womb. Towards the end of pregnancy, the amount of discharge increases further. In the last week or so of pregnancy, it may contain streaks of sticky, jelly-like pink mucus." https://www.nhs.uk/pregnancy/related-conditions/common-symptoms/vaginal-discharge/

Is my discharge normal?

Google images can be helpful here, but in general

"Contact your midwife if

  • it smells unpleasant or strange
  • It is green or yellow
  • you feel itchy or sore around your vagina
  • you have pain when you pee"

https://www.nhs.uk/pregnancy/related-conditions/common-symptoms/vaginal-discharge/

Is this my mucus plug?

Again, Google images can help you identify what you are looking at. Baby Centre UK has a great resource:

https://www.babycentre.co.uk/l25008775/what-a-mucus-plug-looks-like-photos

Please try to find the answer yourself before posting pictures. Also please do not rely on Reddit strangers to accurately identify your bodily fluids. Always contact your midwife/healthcare team if you are concerned.

I'm only 28/33/35 weeks, and I think I've lost my mucus plug.

This is usually not a reason to worry, unless accompanied by other symptoms.

"You can lose a piece or part of your mucus plug at any time during your pregnancy, but it may regenerate. So, before getting too worried that yours has dislodged, consider that what you’re seeing may be other discharge." https://www.healthline.com/health/pregnancy/mucus-plug-early-pregnancy#losing-it-early

Always contact your midwife/healthcare team if you are concerned.

Thank you!

Advice Wanted Partner plans to be away for a month while I am 8 months pregnant

I’m due on 12 May 2027 with my first baby and I am 38, and my boyfriend wants to go to his home country for the whole of April.

Originally, he was planning to go in May, but after finding out the due date, he moved the trip to April instead. I do appreciate that he’s made that adjustment without me asking, and I don’t want to dismiss the fact that he’s tried to meet be there.

I tried to be okay with it, but the more I thought about it, the more I didn’t feel okay with it. I did bring it up to him by asking him what if I go into labour, he said that’s not going to happen as he was overdue. I told him I was born premature. šŸ¤·šŸ»ā€ā™€ļø I asked if he would come back if I went to labour and he said ā€œI’ll tryā€.

April will be the final month of my pregnancy. I’ll be around 34 to 38 weeks pregnant, getting increasingly uncomfortable, preparing for the birth and potentially going into labour before my due date. I’m in the UK, and his family is a 13ish hour flight away, so this isn’t a trip where he could easily come back in a couple of hours if something happened.

His main reason for going is to help his mum travel, as she is deaf in one ear and in her 60s, which I do understand and don't want to be insensitive about. I appreciate that family is important to him, and I know he's moved the trip from May to April as a compromise. The trip is for his mom to take care of his grandma who is in her 90s. However, I'm struggling with the fact that he'll still be away for an entire month, during the final weeks of my first pregnancy. I feel torn between understanding his reasons and wishing he would prioritise being here with me during such an important and unpredictable time in our lives. He said my parents will be around, whereas his mom only has him. I also suggested airline assistance, but he said he’s worried about outside of the airport. At the same time, I went back with him earlier this year and his relatives picked us up and dropped us off from the airport. But maybe he doesn’t want to hassle others in the next trip.

I tried to suggest compromises of travelling together as a family when the baby is 3 months old, but he said it’s not possible since it will be so bad for the baby’s health. I asked if he could come back earlier by 2 weeks, and he said he can’t because he will buy the tickets together and they need to come back together. If he does come back earlier he will need to buy separate flights.

This is my first pregnancy, and I honestly don’t know how I’ll feel physically or emotionally at that stage. We had a miscarriage in June and in the last month I have had bleeding, not spotting, but dripping down my leg and clots. I don’t know how anxious, exhausted I will be, whether I will need more support than I currently realise, or simply want my partner nearby because the birth is getting close.

I tried to continue the conversation/argument and his worry was that he would be sitting here in England while his mom needed him or something happened. I asked him if he had thought about that for me, he said no, he hadn’t. I asked how he would feel if something does happen to me, and he told me I was emotionally blackmailing him. He asked me what difference 2 weeks would make and I said a big difference and he asked me what’s the big difference? Honestly I was crying and having a panic attack so maybe I wasn’t coherent or emotionally there.

I also feel torn because, technically, he has compromised. Part of me feels I should acknowledge that and accept April as a reasonable alternative to May. Another part of me feels that being away for an entire month immediately before your baby’s due date is a big ask, regardless of which month he goes. The prospect of potentially navigating the final weeks of pregnancy without him has brought up some uncomfortable feelings about what our life as parents might look like.

There are obviously other things that were said, both sides but I just want to know, am I being unreasonable? I understand his mom will always be a priority since she only has him, but I’m not asking him to pick dinner with me over her, it’s something much bigger? The trip was planned since last year and before I got pregnant, before we even met. He said ā€œif you want me to not go just TELL MEā€ but that’s not what I want? I just want to be taken in to consideration.

It’s also made me think about the birth itself. If I’m going to be on my own for much of the final month anyway, should I emotionally and practically prepare to do more of this independently?

We live separately currently and we planned to move in together, and he told me that 1-2 nights a week he will need to go back home to his mom (she works evenings, and he walks her to work as it’s late/raining/etc.) which I understand and I said that’s totally fine. A part of me appreciates that he takes care of his family/mom so fiercely. I don’t want to compete with his mom or put him in a position where he has to. I’m just adding this to say that I really tried to be understanding and want him to be there for his mom too.

I left his home on Saturday night and he hasn’t contacted me since. Usually after a fight I would reach out, no matter who is wrong. I just hate arguing with him, but this time I just..I’m so tired. We have our first official scan (not from the emergency clinic/NIPT appointment) this Friday.

There really isn’t a good ending for this is there? If he stays, he will resent me, either their trip is cancelled or his mom goes alone and he will just always remember how I stopped him from going. If he goes, I’m not sure I can come back from it emotionally, mentally. But right now my mind is just wanting him to go on his trip, I don’t really feel sure I want him there, and weirdly I don’t want my mom there either. I just want to be alone.

I’m not even sure why I’m writing this, maybe those that have done it alone, or been in similar situation can chime in? Maybe I’m just super hurt that he hasn’t reached out at all in 4 days to check if the baby or I am okay. I don’t know.

First Trimester When did everybody have their 12 week scan?

I’m 12 weeks now and haven’t heard anything. Last week I rang up and was told ā€œpeople are more pregnant than you and need them first you’ll hear soonā€.
I understand the window for the scan I just don’t like the uncertainty and want to know when it is as need to sort not being off work and same for my husband! Also the first trimester is just a really weird time!
When have people had their scans and how much notice did you get?

Edit - I self referred at 5w3d and had my booking appoint just before 8 weeks but seems like where I am the hospital book the scan separately to the midwife/book appt. I think I’ll call again today.

Advice Wanted How to cope with partners mother being "nice" 6 months into pregnancy

Hi all

This woman has never liked me. I was baffled by it. Probably as I'm older, 35, and I've been married for a decade, and I had a good exMIL.

At first I tried to win her over but I won't lie, I gave up as I felt very humiliated by her behaviour.

Throughout the pregnancy, her behaviour continued. That was until I hit almost 6 months. She's tried to get my phone number, meet more often, offered to buy the pram, and has become a wonderful human.

I am furious, so furious. Has anyone dealt with this? She's clearly panicking at the fact we have no relationship, and if things continue the way they are, she will see her only grandchild less than 12 times a year.

I don't plan on letting her in, I refused the pram, and I've increased the next visit gap to 6 weeks - just out of pure resentment.

She genuinely gives me the ick, I'm just grateful I have boundaries in place, but why do these women think they can treat the mother of their grandchild like crap and then get access? It's ridiculous.

Sensitive Subject Matter - Handle with care Potential Heart Anomaly - 20 week Scan

• Upvotes

Hi everyone šŸ’™ I'm wondering if anyone has had a similar experience at their 20-week scan and wouldn't mind sharing what happened afterwards.

I had my 20-week anomaly scan this week and was told that the sonographer hadn't been able to get completely typical views of my little boy's heart. The report says ā€œatypical RVOT and 3VT viewsā€, and we've been referred for a specialist fetal cardiac scan next week.

During the scan, I overheard the sonographers mentioning that some of the blood vessels looked enlarged or dilated, but when I asked for clarification, I was told it was ā€œjust not textbookā€. We weren't really given much more information, so we've come away feeling quite anxious and unsure what it might mean.

The sonographer did have difficulty getting the views because of his position, so I'm also wondering whether anyone has had an inconclusive or unusual-looking heart view at their anomaly scan that turned out to be completely normal when checked again.

Has anyone been told their baby's RVOT or 3VT views were atypical, or had concerns raised about the pulmonary artery or aorta looking enlarged? Did you have a fetal echocardiogram or specialist scan afterwards, and were you given any answers?

I'd be really grateful to hear about your experiences and what the eventual outcome was, whether everything turned out to be fine or further investigation was needed. I know every pregnancy and every baby's situation is different, and I'm not looking for a diagnosis — it would just be reassuring to hear from anyone who's been through something similar.

Thank you so much ā¤ļø

Getting Ready for Baby Reached 35w today

FTM, 35w. I woke up feeling like my body has entered a whole new level of aches and pains. Lower back pain, pelvic pressure, lower stomach pressure, increased d1scharge, tailbone/ bum pain, increasingly numb hands and feet, and getting out of breath after doing the bare minimum.

Is this the sign to finally get the last bits done? Starting iced raspberry leaf tea, eating dates, pineapples?, filling my nappy and postpartum caddies, and maybe packing my hospital bag?!

We’ve already build the next2me, travel system, car seat etc. so it’s just small tasks left like packing bags, caddies, putting bassinet sheets on etc.

I have this feeling baby might make an early appearance, although I’d love for baby to bake until 40w.

Thoughts?

Advice Wanted Am I overreacting, or is my family already starting to overstep boundaries?

Hi everyone, I’m hoping someone can relate to this or offer some advice on how to deal with family members getting too involved in our pregnancy.

I’m currently 20 weeks pregnant, and my partner and I told our parents when I was 16 weeks. The only reason we told them that early was because both sets of parents needed physical help with things (one was moving house), and I had to explain why I wouldn’t be able to help.

When we told them, we made it clear that we were sharing the news with them privately, but we wouldn’t be telling anyone else until after our 20-week scan. This was a decision we made together as a couple, and it was what we felt comfortable with.

However, almost immediately, we started getting pressure to tell other family members. We were told things like, ā€œYou need to ring your nan because she’ll be so upset if she finds out we knew before her,ā€ and ā€œYou have to tell your brother because he’s immediate family.ā€

My mum even started asking when I was going to tell my dad, insisting that I had to call him and that I couldn’t tell certain people before him. For context, my parents have been divorced for 24 years, I don’t have a particularly good relationship with my dad, and he lives three hours away. I’m therefore not in any rush to tell him, and I honestly don’t understand why my mum feels she has a say in when or how I tell him.

On top of this, my mum has already started making comments about the baby’s name, saying things like, ā€œWe’ve got plenty of time to name the baby,ā€ and sending me loads of name suggestions everyday! I know she’s probably excited, but it’s starting to feel like she’s involving herself in decisions that are ultimately ours to make as parents.

Since telling our parents, we’ve also received multiple messages asking whether we’ve told various family members yet. Even though we’ve explained multiple times why we won’t be doing that. They’re just not listening or respecting our answer.

Maybe I’m overreacting, and perhaps some of this is just excitement, but I can’t shake the feeling that this is the beginning of our boundaries being crossed. I’m only 20 weeks pregnant, and already I feel pressured about who we should tell, when we should tell them, and even the decisions surrounding the baby.

I don’t want to cause unnecessary family drama or stop anyone from being excited about the baby. I just want us to be able to enjoy our pregnancy, make our own decisions, and share things in our own time without feeling pressured, guilty or constantly questioned.

Has anyone else experienced this during pregnancy, and how did you handle it before it became a bigger issue? Or am I really overreacting and pregnancy hormones are making me extra sensitive šŸ˜…

Advice Wanted ECV tomorrow - what do I take?

• Upvotes

Just a quick question and an ask for some positive advise on an ECV. I’m 36 weeks and my baby is breech and we’ve been offered an ECV.

Could I please have some advice (outside of what the guidelines already suggest) on what to take with us?
I’m thinking a like to go bag and then mine and baby’s full birthing bags in the car just in case.

Also any positive stories? Everything else with baby is great and no other risks but I just need a good news story to go in with the right mindset!

TIA xx

Advice Wanted Struggling with sciatica/bulg disc/nerve pain in pregnancy

Hi all, long time lurker and first time posting! I actually graduated 4 weeks ago when my beautiful baby girl was born and I’ve been so grateful for all of the support and advice in this group throughout.

Now I’m posting on behalf of my friend who is 15 weeks pregnant with her second and really struggling with pain to the point that her mental health has plummeted as she’s not been able to work or care for her son properly for almost the whole of her pregnancy so far, even struggling to walk more than a few minutes without pain. She’s usually very physically active, healthy and positive but this experience has massively knocked her and she’s had suicidal thoughts, seeing no end in sight at the moment. She says she can’t face every day knowing it will be another of trying to manage or distract herself from this never ending pain.

She doesn’t use Reddit but I said it might be worth me sharing something in case anyone has any experience, solidarity or advice - she’s of course tried everything but being pregnant, there doesn’t seem to be any help for the pain and she’s just told they don’t know why it’s happening. One midwife even suggested to her that she might not really want the pregnancy and this is her body’s reaction to that, which isn’t true and she was left feeling unheard and hopeless after that appointment.

Here’s her message:
Hello,

Has anyone had servere sciatica/ bulg disc/ nerve pain that causes the leg to go numb and intense pain in the lower back while pregnant?
Im being told I cant have any imaging done and the only safe painkiller is paracetamol which doesn't have any affect.

Pregnancy Complications Health anxiety

• Upvotes

Hi All!

I’m currently 38 weeks and 5 days pregnant with diagnosed health OCD and clinical white coat hypertension.

It’s been difficult throughout my pregnancy but I have been extremely lucky to have had the support from the midwives regarding my struggles with my health anxiety.

One of the biggest things is taking control and allowing me to take my bp at home (still do it in the hospital but it is always ridiculously high like 140/110) so they take the at home readings as bible as they are always around 110-70 / 80.

I went to take my blood pressure at home (should I state I’ve recently moved homes so currently not my ā€œsafe space as of yet still adjustingā€) so it’s been a bit of a struggle to take myself out of the panic mindset when taking readings. But they have been fine other than that. I took my blood pressure last night and it made me panic!!! At home where it should be normal it was 144/101. I waited around 15 minutes tried to distract myself and it went down to 125/91 then I FaceTimed my mum and another 15 minutes later it went down to 114/84.

Although it went down I still contacted the L&D (MAU in UK) and informed them. They didn’t seem too concerned as no other symptoms and the fact it went down - I also had a midwife appt booked in the day after (today)

Today I went to my midwife appointment as normal. Before hand took an at home reading. Because of my OCD I was working myself up first reading was 130/95 10 minutes later 123/82 then another 10 minutes was 119/78.

My urine sample today had some Leukocytes she didn’t say how many, some Ketones (I hadn’t ate before the appointment) and she said a tiny bit of protein so sent off my urine for further testing. She didn’t say much I’m lucky enough to have a specialised mental health midwife for my OCD and health anxiety so I guess she’s trained in dealing with stuff like this in a certain way. I really appreciated it but my OCD thinks it’s a trained Dr.

Obviously knew if it came back means I could have pre-eclampsia which I am terrified of. She didn’t mention anything about it directly but I knew she was hinting at it.
Due to me having raised BP in hospital settings (my phobia) they have planned for me to have an induction by 40 weeks. So she basically said to me if it comes back positive they’ll send me for further blood tests to check and then go from there and most likely induce me asap.

I also want to note after my midwife appointment I had a general doctors appointment because I’ve had a very heavy chesty cough brining up green mucus after a cold turns out I have a chest infection so have been given antibiotics for that. My health OCD is on overdrive as I’ve had headaches ish but they go away after paracetamol or resting (I think it’s because of my constant cough)

Not looks for answers obviously know that these things happen and my situation is crazy.

Any one have any advice regarding being induced?
Potential pre-eclampsia diagnosis?
Know if the protein in urine could be to do with the chest infection? (This was before antibiotics were prescribed)

My OCD needs to just know before hand so any advice is good advice

Thank you xx

Getting Ready for Baby Do I wait for black Friday?! 34 weeks currently

I have a fair few more bits to get for the baby, more like gadgets then essentials (I have pram, car seat, furniture, next2me and moses basket). More things like white noise machines, the Tommee Tippe egg thing, bath chair, the newborn baby highchair, thermometers etc! Then products for the baby etc.

I am a bit unorganised haven't packed hospital bag yet, so will also need all the postpartum bits, but I guess deffo don't wait to see deals then as ideally needs to be packed in next week or so?

I guess baby products can wait as it is a little while until you use them (a good few weeks??). But the others, I am wondering do I just buy now on pay day and know that everything is sorted and put away. Or do I wait another 3 weeks or so when I will be 37-38 weeks to hopefully get some deals on Amazon for black friday?

Part of me wants to be organised have everything away and not be stressing thinking about stuff I haven't got if she comes early. And also if the savings overall will be like idk £30+ then probably not worthwhile waiting? But also knowing it is Amazon I know I can get most things next day delivery if she comes early and I NEED something?

Thanks

Second Trimester Is it cruel or is it fun?

So I'm currently 13 weeks, but look a lot further on due to bloat and a natural beer belly. I've not told anyone at work yet (apart from my direct manager) because I've not had my screening results back for chromosomal disorders back yet. But today I've noticed a few people looking at my belly, and one male manager from another team was brave/reckless enough to give his congratulations. I initially tried to play it off like 'congratulations for what? Omg you cheeky bastard, I'm just fat' and seeing him panic was very entertaining (I did put him out his misery in the end, but told him not to tell anyone).

I was going to tell people once I get confirmation that there is little risk of Edwards or pataus. But I really enjoyed the awkwardness of that interaction and now I'm thinking it would be a very interesting/entertaining social experiment to not tell anyone at work and see who feels brave enough to confront the elephant in the room. Is that cruel to experiment on my colleagues?

Advice Wanted Baby’s heart rate high

I went in for my 36 week midwife appointment yday (at 36+5) and she said the baby’s heart rate was running high (in the 170s). She checked for 3 minutes and baby hadn’t moved during that time. And therefore she referred me to the day assessment unit (DAU). Funnily enough, we’d had a scan just that morning with the fetal medicine unit (due to slightly elevated levels of fluid in baby’s kidney, but FMU dismissed us), and her heart rate and growth etc was all fine during that.

Got to the DAU and she passed the monitoring in the allocated 25 mins, but was moving a lot (I think reacting to the monitor being on her) and so kept having a heart rate in the 170s-180s, but with a baseline in the 140s so they kept me on for the hour. They asked if it was her normal movement at that time of day, and I said no but she could be reacting to the monitor and perhaps also the scan that morning. The midwife still wasn’t happy so wanted us to do an extra hour, but then it was a shift change and the new midwife said it was probably fine but they’d like to see baby settle down a bit, so I should go for a walk for 10-20 mins and come back and do the monitoring again. But then the doctor came by so the midwife asked him, and he said it was fine due to the base level and I should just leave.

They also asked when my next appt is, so baby’s heart rate can be checked again, but I don’t have any more until my c section now (which is in 2 weeks and 4 days), so they said just keep an eye on movements.

Baby has felt fine to me and is moving normally, but I have no way of knowing what her heart rate is and I’m feeling a bit concerned in case there was/is an issue. Has anyone had anything similar, and was it fine?

Advice Wanted Tips for colostrum collecting for large breasts

I had my first attempt last night, during and after a bath, and I know it can take a few goes, but I found it impossible to know where the ā€œshelfā€ / milk ducts are in these giant breasts (32J during pregnancy). Any useful tips?

Advice Wanted How do people do it stressed?

How do people actually do it?

I’m currently 10 weeks pregnant and work a normal 9–5 job. I earn Ā£30k a year and my partner earns Ā£26k, so we’re both on fairly average wages. The thing that’s worrying me is maternity leave. You only get 6 weeks of full pay, and after that, your income drops significantly to Statutory Maternity Pay. When you’ve still got a mortgage and bills to pay, it’s a massive adjustment. We split our household bills, and that alone comes to around Ā£750 per person each a month. I’d love to take the full 12 months of maternity leave, but the thought of managing financially on so little for that long is scary. Then there’s the next hurdle of figuring out childcare once I return to work, especially as we don’t have any family nearby who can help with childcare.

We wanted a baby, and we’re so happy to be having one, but I honestly didn’t realise just how financially challenging it could be for women to have a baby, take time off to recover and bond with their child, and then return to work while still trying to maintain a normal life without constantly worrying about money. Ive managed to saved 9K but that this will literally cover my share of the bills for 12 months while on mat leave not even counting in a baby!

I know there’s Child Benefit and potentially Universal Credit, but I’m not sure what we’d be eligible for on our combined wages. I’d genuinely love to hear from other mums and mums-to-be who were in a similar position. What did you do? Did you take the full year off? How did you manage financially, and what did you do about childcare when you returned to work?

I’m not looking for judgement, just some real-life experiences and advice from parents who’ve been through it. ā¤ļø

Advice Wanted Not getting any colostrum

Pretty much what the title says.

Currently 38 weeks and have tried multiple times since 36 weeks (approved by my midwife).

I’ve done all the things like having warm showers and baths, using hot compresses and hot water bottles, massaging. I did manage to get some droplets of something from one side but nothing from the other.

A couple of things on my mind that I’d love some advice/ insight on:

- I have large breasts (have gone up to a J cup in pregnancy) and so the techniques we were taught in our antenatal class and I see online aren’t always super easy to replicate. Any advice from larger chested women?

- My nipples seem to invert. Has anyone else had this issue and if you have did you do anything that helped with colostrum like a nipple everter etc?

- How often should I be trying? I’ve been trying every couple of days as I don’t want to overdo it (think I went too hard the first time I tried and it was a bit painful afterwards) but maybe I need to try more often.

- I’ve had a terrible cold for the last two weeks and also was on antibiotics last week for a suspected infection. Could this have made a difference?

- What happens if I can’t collect any pre-birth? I plan to breastfeed but have some pre-made infant formula for the hospital. Will this be enough?

Thanks all - I know colostrum isn’t completely necessary and it doesn’t have any bearing on whether you can breastfeed or not but hard not to get into one’s head about it.

Work and Parental Leave When to tell my new employer that I am due in May (I started 2 weeks ago)

I am in a bit of a pickle and I really do not know what to do.
I have a 14 month old and found out shortly after their 1st birthday that I am expecting again (unexpected conception!) I will be 12 weeks this Friday.
I was part way through working my 3-month notice when I found I was pregnant again. I considered asking to keep my old job but I wanted this opportunity, the hours were better for my (now suddenly growing!) family, and I was unhappy with my treatment returning from maternity leave.
I have left behind 6 months of full pay mat leave šŸ’” and due to the timing, I do not qualify for SMP and will have to claim maternity allowance.
I will be on probation until mid-January (3 months) and will be leaving at the very end of April (due second week of May.
I’m looking for advice on when to tell my employer, what kind of reactions I should be prepared for, and whether I need to do anything in the short term to secure my future? I am worried that they will find a reason to let me go…

My thoughts are:
- Wait until I have enough feedback to evidence I am good at my job and an asset to the team. I want at least 2 positive probation review meetings which would mean the earliest I’d share the news is just before Christmas/in the first week of Jan. I would also have my Mat B 1 form.
- I feel guilty leaving it until this point! It would give them around 3 months to find maternity cover which is possibly unfair, but I also feel like I need to protect myself…
- I also would like to wait until the anatomy scan results to share the news widely. I feel more anxious this pregnancy for a couple of reasons, and I am under consultant care, and I just want to be sure that we’re both okay before I open up to new colleagues.
- It also seems important to mention that I will be requesting 11 months of maternity. A full 12 months of maternity leave is a ā€˜Day 1’ right, and I need to return after 1st April to qualify for the funded nursery hours. If I return to work earlier, childcare will cost more than my salary.
- I work part time and my company have a policy that part time employers should arrange all appointments on their non-working days where possible. I have been able to do this so far but I am worried it won’t be possible for every appointment…

There’s probably more that I need to say and I am forgetting to mention… the bottom line is I need to tell them at some point, and I don’t want them to let me go or feel like I have deceived them… which feels inevitable but I’m also hoping for the best and expecting the worst? Idk, please help me!

Third Trimester Braxton hicks or contracts ??

Hey all I’m a ftm and I was wondering how u guys told the difference or if it’s worth me ringing triage ?

I’m currently 34+4 weeks and had a healthy pregnancy, no issues , I think I started getting Braxton hicks about 2 weeks ago but today it’s rlly bad , like I’ve got bad pains in the front lower half of my belly ? Like to the pain where I’m in a lot of pain and I understand you uterus stretches and stuff at this stage so maybe it’s just that ? But I just wanted to know what you would do she’s moving fine and all so I think it’s just Braxton hicks but I know she’s quite low at the moment .

TIA xx

Work and Parental Leave When to tell people at work re pregnancy

I I work in a fast-paced and sometimes demanding work environment. I’m currently 14 weeks pregnant and am planning to inform my employer when I’m around 20 weeks, which would be around 9 December.

My main concern is that I oversee several clients, and I’ll need to discuss goals and set expectations for Q1 next year by end of this week. However, I’m planning to start my maternity leave in the third week of March 2028.

Would giving my employer notice on 9 December be enough time to plan for my absence, considering I’ll be going on maternity leave in mid-March?

At the moment, I’m doing okay physically and can still manage my workload. My concern is more about what might happen later in my pregnancy, particularly during my third trimester, if work becomes more stressful or demanding.

I want to be fair to my employer and give them enough time to plan, but I also wanted to wait until I felt ready to share the news.

For those who have been in a similar situation, when did you tell your employer about your pregnancy? Do you think giving around 4 months’ notice before maternity leave is reasonable, especially in a client-facing role?

Work and Parental Leave Telling work about my pregnancy

I’ve waited until 20w to tell work. I have to do it tomorrow. I feel sick with anxiety. I’ve been back to work 18 months since my last one but I feel so guilty. I’ve never known anyone in my workplace take two maternity leaves so I feel really guilty about it. I know it’s crazy. Please send me words of wisdom and positive thoughts.

First Trimester I can’t cope with this anymore

I am 9+4 weeks and I’ve been in bed now constantly since 6+3, I feel so unwell ALL THE TIME, peak nausea, vomiting 3-5 times a day… I’ve tried multiple anti sickness and the gp has told me to try gaviscon for the heartburn as well as Xonvea which has minimal benefits. They’ll review it with me again on Monday.

I’ve already decided I’m not doing this more than once, I have no quality of life and I can’t even watch tv. People say ā€˜you don’t have to struggle’ but it feels like I literally do. I don’t know when this will end, I’m scared of it not getting better until 20 weeks like some people say.

I’ve been signed off work now for nearly 3 weeks. Is anyone else in the same boat? It’s putting a strain on my relationship because he has to do everything because I just can’t. Everyone else I talk to seems to have had it not this bad. I can’t cope :(

Work and Parental Leave Being made to feel guilty to not leave work early

I’m 34 weeks pregnant and planned to work until 38 weeks. As I’m approaching I’m thinking of finishing at 37 weeks I just feel like that extra week will allow me to do the bits i still need to do (quite behind with everything!).

My boss asked me today when is my last day. I said oh well i planned for this but im thinking of bringing it forward a week.

I wouldn’t say she was pissed off but she was like oh no why would you want to do that we need you blah blah blah. I said i’m getting tired and lots to do. Well you’ll be working at home and have the evenings…

Normally she is extremely fair but just feel like i’m being guilt tripped into staying.

I know what the answers from you all will be!! But wondered how I should approach it, I don’t want to be rude or direct
