I’ve been playing Pokémon UNITE since it first launched back in 2021, and with the end of service approaching, I figured I’d share some thoughts.
Back when the game first came out, I played almost daily. Eventually, I got into the habit of just reaching Master rank every season and then not touching the game again until the next one.
I ended up skipping a couple of seasons around the time they started changing how players obtained licenses. I remember thinking back then, “Well, this might be the beginning of the end.”
About a week ago, I decided to jump back in and see how things were going. I noticed the license situation had gotten even worse, although it seemed to mostly affect newer players rather than someone like me who already had most of the roster unlocked.
So I thought, why not make one last push to Masters? Maybe find a team, participate in a tournament, and call it a season.
Then I noticed the ranked system had changed. Climbing felt harder without the consecutive win bonuses we used to get. But I eventually reached Masters, only to realize that wasn’t the end of the climb anymore. There was Legend rank now.
So naturally, I decided to go for it, and wow, what a pain lol.
Losing 40 points while gaining around 80 for a win makes the climb feel pretty rough, especially without the old bonuses. I guess the idea was to make the higher ranks more competitive and improve the quality of matches? I’m not entirely sure.
I still ran into plenty of AFK players and people intentionally feeding, although I will say the automatic reporting system seemed to do a pretty good job catching them. So I’m not really sure what the harder climb was supposed to accomplish.
But despite all that, coming back reminded me why I enjoyed this game so much in the first place.
There’s just something about being able to jump into a 10-minute match and experience some genuinely intense battles. Even after all these years, the gameplay still feels great, and I really hope another company eventually makes something similar.
I also used to participate in quite a few tournaments back in 2021, and honestly, that’s one of the things I’ll miss the most. It’s sad knowing I probably won’t get to experience that again before the servers shut down.
Anyway, I recently cleared out my friends list, so if anyone wants to add me, I’ll be playing most days until EoS. And if there’s a team looking for someone to join a tournament before then, I’d absolutely love to participate.
Not really sure what the point of this post was, other than reminiscing a little and sharing my experience coming back to the game.
But yeah, despite its flaws, Pokémon UNITE was genuinely a fun game, and I’m glad I got to experience it.
