Kute grew up behind his father’s church in Ghana. His dad was known as “the miracle man of Africa,” and Kute watched him heal the sick in front of crowds of a thousand people. At 14, Kute was ordained to inherit all of it. Over 300 churches and hundreds of thousands of followers.
At 18, he said no.
He packed two suitcases, took $800 from his mother, and moved to Los Angeles knowing nobody. No plan, no safety net.
It didn’t go the way you’d hope. He spent two years broke and homeless. He chased a talk show deal with the same managers who represented Michael Jackson and Mariah Carey, then turned it down on a gut feeling he couldn’t even explain. That one took guts, and honestly, it made me think about a few of my own “obvious” opportunities that weren’t.
The part that stuck with me most was how he talked about money. For years he unconsciously pushed it away, because his father had chosen money over family. In his mind, staying broke was staying pure. That belief nearly kept him broke for good.
He also broke down why goals don’t manifest, and it wasn’t the usual stuff. Timing. Lessons we haven’t learned yet. And the counter-intentions running quietly underneath the thing we say we want.
His big takeaway is that real change starts with telling yourself the truth, before you take any action at all. Most of us spend our time editing the story instead.
Here’s what I keep asking myself since this conversation: what’s the thing you’ve been trying to fix for years that might not be a strategy problem at all?
Have you ever caught yourself holding a belief that was quietly working against what you said you wanted? Curious what it was and how you spotted it.
