What are your options?

Welcome to [r/PlanBs](r/PlanBs)! This community is designed for those who need any sort of advice or information regarding emergency contraceptives. Below is a small guide to various emergency contraceptives along with a short description and a few sources to help you answer any of your questions. Feel free to post if you have any other questions or concerns.

Plan B One-Step: 1.5mg Levonorgestrel

The most commonly known EC on the market! Also goes by the names My Way or Take Action. Plan B is a pretty large dose of a synthetic form of progesterone, Levonorgestrel. It works by delaying ovulation (the release of an egg) long enough so that any sperm present in the fallopian tubes die before ovulation can occur, preventing any potential pregnancy.

Plan B and similar levonorgestrel EC's can be taken up to 120h after sex, but is most effective within the first 24-72h. According to the Plan B website: "if you take it within 24 hours of unprotected sex, it is 95% effective. If you take it between 48 and 72 hours of unprotected sex, the efficacy rate is 61%."

One of the most common misconceptions is that Plan B prevents fertilization by affecting cervical mucus and implantation by altering the uterine lining. Recent research shows that this is, in fact, false. The FDA has recently updated their product labeling to specify this: "Evidence does not support that the drug affects implantation or maintenance of a pregnancy after implantation, therefore it does not terminate a pregnancy."

However, if you are not tracking ovulation using a valid fertility awareness method, there is no way to accurately predict when you may ovulate. If a mistake happens and you do not want to risk pregnancy, it is ALWAYS better to get a Plan B than to not.

EllaOne: 30 mg Ulipristal Acetate

Ella is another very commonly known EC. Ella is ultimately the opposite of Plan B, as it is a selective progesterone receptor modulator and works by blocking progesterone receptors. This in turn delays ovulation and ultimately, prevents a potential pregnancy.

According to Planned Parenthood: "Ella lowers your chances of getting pregnant by 85 percent if you take it within 5 days after unprotected sex — but the sooner you take it, the better. Ella is the most effective type of morning-after pill you can get."

According to Ellas FAQs, Ella also does not work if ovulation has already occurred. Meaning it also, like Plan B, does not prevent events occurring post ovulation like fertilization or implantation. But as I've mentioned before, unless you know when you ovulated, it is always better to take it than to not take it.

DO NOT TAKE ELLA ONE IF YOU HAVE ALREADY TAKEN A PLAN B WITHIN THE PAST 5 DAYS. Plan B is essentially a large dose of progesterone and Ella is a progesterone receptor blocker, so if those receptors are blocked, Plan B cannot do its job.

DO NOT TAKE ELLA IF YOU ARE ON HORMONAL BIRTH CONTROL.

Hormonal and Non-Hormonal Intrauterine Devices (IUDs) as EC

An IUD as an EC is the most effective type of EC you can get. They work up to 5 days after unprotected sex and can continue to prevent pregnancy for years, depending on the one that you get. Mirena and Liletta are approved hormonal IUDs that can act as ECs as well as the Paragard, which is a Copper IUD. https://www.plannedparenthood.org/learn/morning-after-pill-emergency-contraception/how-do-iuds-work-emergency-contraception

ECPs can usually be accessed by calling your local Planned Parenthood or sold on shelves in any local pharmacy. Oftentimes PP can give you a discount (Plan B is upwards of $40-$50 where I reside) and let you know where to get one. Appointments for IUDs can also be set up by your local PP as well. In the US, most major retailers will have Plan B and it’s generic versions. You can also buy cheaper generic versions off Amazon.

Yuzpe Method

Sometimes oral birth control can be used as an EC. This is a common practice in countries where ECPs like Plan B or Ella are banned. This method requires you take two doses of 4-5 pills (depending on the brand), 12 hours apart. This DOES NOT work with every brand of birth control and it is your responsibility to make sure that the brand you are using can be used for this method. This link, this link and this link39372-0/pdf) talks about this method in more detail and this link lists all the brands of birth control pills that work with this method along with which pills and how many of them need to be taken. If you are unsure, please speak to your doctor or pharmacist. You do need a prescription for oral birth control.

If I have missed anything or edits are needed, please let me know and I will update when I can.

Frequently Asked Questions! Please read this before posting.

1. I’m over the weight limit for Plan B, should I take two?

If you weigh over 165lbs, levonorgestrel based ECs may not work for you. This includes Plan B, My Way, Take Action, etc. Taking two will not help with this either, it’ll only dose you more with hormones and may still not work. In this case, EllaOne is a better option as the weight limit is higher.

If you weigh more than 195lbs, ECPs may not work for you at all and your other option will be getting an emergency IUD, as these do not depend on your weight and will work as long as it’s inserted within 5 days. https://www.plannedparenthood.org/learn/ask-experts/whats-the-weight-limit-for-plan-b

If you don’t have access to an IUD, taking something is better than taking nothing.

2. How long will Plan B/Yuzpe delay my period?

There is no way to tell how long certain ECs can delay your period. Some report getting their periods on time as expected while others report irregularities in their cycle that last up to months afterwards.

3. Experienced bleeding earlier than expected after taking an emergency contraceptive, is this my period/implantation bleeding?

One of the most commonly reported side effects of ECPs is bleeding within a week of taking them. This is due to the sudden hormone change that occurs once your body filters out the medication and it’s hormones. This is NOT your period. However, it can be very difficult to tell these bleeds apart from your period as it can mimic a menstrual bleed so the only way to know for sure is to wait it out and see when your next bleed comes.

Implantation bleeding is a misnomer as there is no solid scientific evidence that proves implantation causes bleeding. If you are bleeding after taking an ECP, it is likely due to the ECP.

Only a test can tell you whether you’re pregnant or not, so take a test when appropriate to know for sure. A test is accurate 14 days after sex and definitive after 21 days.

4. How long do the side effects of Plan B/Yuzpe last?

Much like with Q2, there is no way to know long the side effects of EC can last. It can be from a few days to a few months, it all just depends on the person.

5. Should I take a Plan B?

Emergency contraceptives are meant to be used in emergencies, meaning your Plan A failed. Whether that’s a condom broke, you missed a pill or a shot etc. in cases like these where you’re at risk is when a Plan B is necessary. However, Plan B is NOT birth control and it is not meant to be taken regularly as a contraceptive, which is why it’s crucial to have a reliable Plan A.

If you engaged in a sexual activity and are unsure whether or not there is a risk of pregnancy, then these two links can help outline what poses a risk. Typically things like outercourse do not present a risk high enough to require a Plan B. Unprotected penetration, on the other hand, does.

https://www.scarleteen.com/article/bodies/youre_not_pregnant_why_do_you_think_you_are

http://www.scarleteen.com/article/bodies/can_i_get_pregnant_or_get_or_pass_on_an_sti_from_that

Also, if you’re wondering as to whether or not you messed up your birth control, feel free to post on [r/birthcontrol](r/birthcontrol)! This link helps outline what counts as a missed pill very clearly.

6. Does the Plan B bleed mean I am not pregnant?

No, the bleed that is a side effect of Plan B is not indicative that you’re not pregnant. Only a pregnancy test 14-21 days after sex can tell you whether you’re pregnant or not.

7. What are the potential side effects of Plan B?

Please refer to the pamphlet that comes with your pill. Here is a PDF of the pamphlet in the case that you have discarded of it. Below are a few of the most common side effects:

  • Irregular Bleeding
  • Nausea
  • Abdominal pain
  • Fatigue
  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Breast tenderness
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea

This is not an exhaustive list, therefore there are other side effects you may experiences that are not specified. Side effects can last much longer than said, lasting up to months after medicating.

Plan B (Levonorgestrel) Pill Plan b - Symptoms day by day - Please share your experience

• Upvotes

Hi all!

So I had unprotected sex last Tuesday (7.5 days ago), both times he pulled out, the second time was 6 hours after the first. I have had quite an array of symptoms since I took plan b (1st time for me!!) and I am reading some horror stories here about insane cramping bleeding and pain months afterwards and am a little terrified.

Thursday (35-40 hrs after the first sex) I took a plan b - Postinor 2 little pills.
Friday: Cramping, severe fatigue and dissociation
Saturday: Diarrhea, severe fatigue and dissociation (started feeling very sick but sore throat maybe not related)
Sunday: Extreme hunger, Fatigued but feeling better, some back pain but nothing out of the ordinary
Monday: Extreme hunger, feeling much better, TIRED
Tuesday: Energy is coming back, very very hungry, back pain !
Wednesday: Energy is coming back, emotionally feeling slightly normal, side cramping at ovaries, lower back pain, SPOTTING bleeding brown and rust color DAY 1

Can someone share what I should expect for the rest? Will I be okay?

(Will update the rest as I go, I am worried I will bleed forever and my period will be super heavy AND SOME SORT OF ECTOPIC PREGNANCY ARISES)

Also - I think the chances of pregnancy are unlikely but I am quite an anxious person and am dating someone (not the person I slept with) (non-exclusively for now, but I think I may be ready to commit to something more serious soon - we don't live in the same country, but maybe soon). - and if anyone is curious it may have been the best ONS of my life so this stress will be worth it as long as the symptoms stay minimal.

Plan B (Levonorgestrel) Pill Plan b pcos

Hello,

So, I’ll jump straight to it, we had sex with a condom on, I wasn’t that hard when i came, after i came, i pulled out and the condom got stuck, with maybe some semen dripping outside. The condom’s opening was on the outside of the lips, but worst case it was cum that got on the lips. We were concerned the next morning, so we took a plan b within 8 hrs.

She has PCOS, and the app showed it was her first day (sex happened at night, start of that day). After taking plan b, she didn’t have any symptoms, spotting etc. We are concerned, and don’t know what to expect. Please help!

Plan B (Levonorgestrel) Pill Please Help! First time taking and I’m terrified!

Hi, I never post on here but I genuinely need to ease my mind because I am absolutely petrified. I (18F) just started college where I met my boyfriend (18M) and we've been dating for 2 months now. I'm not on any type of birth control but we always use condoms. We did it on Oct. 10th, 21st, and 24th, using condoms on all these dates. I then got my period on Oct 21st and my last day was on the 25th. My cycle is pretty regular and usually around an estimated 28 days.

On the 27th we did it again but the condom broke and it wasn't until after he pulled out that he found a hole in the now significantly empty condom. Within 7-8 hours I took an Aftera / Plan B pill (I don’t know if brands make a difference). I feel nauseous and anxious but mostly terrified of getting pregnant which absolutely cannot happen at all costs. Please tell me what the chances are that I can get pregnant, and other precautions I can take to prevent it. This is literally my worst fear.

I also know these pills don't work when you're over a certain weight, I'm 5'8, around 135lbs/60kg. Please ease my mind. I just need to be told that there’s nothing to be worried about right now…

Plan B (Levonorgestrel) Pill second period late after plan b

late period after plan b

i took a plan b (august 30th) there was no ejaculation i just took it because the condom broke and to be safe. (september)My period came on time but it was shorter than usual as well as lighter.
Some days afterwards I decided to take a pregnancy test because i was just overthinking the length of my period, and it came out as negative (this was 21+ days after last encounter so i would think it was reliable)
My period is 9 days late, 3 days in i took another pregnancy test, negative, on the one week mark of my period being late I took another one, negative as well.
I just want to know how long did it take for some of you guys?

Plan B (Levonorgestrel) Pill How long should nausea last?

I took Plan B exactly one week ago and the same day I had nausea, hot flashes and a panic attack. It’s been a week now and I have nausea usually at night but I have it now after lunch too. I also have hot flashes mostly at night too. How long will this last? My period is supposed to start on November 5th and obviously I’m freaking out.

Plan B (Levonorgestrel) Pill pregnancy scare

My boyfriend and I had sex, but unfortunately, the condom broke. He did not ejaculate during sex, although he had ejaculated about four hours earlier and thinks he urinated before we had sex.
During sex we saw that there was already precum in the condom. When we noticed that the condom had broken, he did not see any white fluid in my vagina, although we understand that this does not necessarily mean that no fluid entered it.

My menstrual cycle is usually around 29 days, and my period ended about six days before we had sex. According to my period-tracking app, I was approximately four days away from ovulation, although I know that the app cannot predict ovulation with complete accuracy.

Because we were worried about pregnancy, I took Plan B approximately 27 hours after sex. I understand that it works mainly by delaying ovulation and cannot guarantee that pregnancy will be prevented.

What is the likelihood that I could become pregnant in this situation?

Copper IUD Copper IUD -- is it worth it for my situation? Do you think I'm at high risk?

23F, So I made a naive and stupid decision this weekend by having sex without protection during my fertile window. For reference, I have a very regular cycle that lasts anywhere between 26-29 days, and my period lasts 6-7 days. I use the Flo app to track my cycle, however I have never tracked my ovulation using home tests before, so the estimates are purely from the app's algorithm.

My timeline for the month:
-- 10/10 period started
-- 10/16 period ended
-- 10/18-10/24 my predicted fertile window
-- 10/22 my predicted day of ovulation
-- 10/24 the day I had unprotected sex

First, we had sex without a condom until he finished on my stomach. He pulled out with enough time for nothing to end up inside of me at all. Then he went to the bathroom, peed, and washed himself off with soap and water and we took a break. Then we had sex a second time, except this time we put on a condom. However during the middle of it, the condom slipped off and got lost inside of me, and had to be fished out. He did not ejaculate at all the second time, so my main concern for this entire night is whether or not his precum can make me pregnant. I do believe I was still in my fertile window as I was plenty wet/had EWCM.

The morning after on 10/25, I took a plan B one step. It caused me to have some nausea and cramping but I feel completely normal since.

My main concern is whether or not I had been ovulating during the time I had sex. If I ovulated days before, and the egg had long disintegrated, then I had no risk to begin with. If I ovulated the day after having sex, then the plan B hopefully extended my ovulation long enough for any sperm inside me to die off. However, if I had sex during the 12-24 hour window of ovulation, then the plan B will not help at all and I could get pregnant.

I have no clue when I ovulated, so I'm afraid the plan B will just end up being useless. I have an appointment scheduled for tomorrow (4 days after sex) to get a copper IUD, however I'm also nervous that this too will be pointless. I'm probably done with ovulation by now as my discharge has dried up and I no longer feel horny/aroused as much, but that's just my guess.

I'm just so afraid that even after I go through the pain and potentially traumatic experience of getting the copper IUD that it will still be for nothing because my egg may have already been fertilized. Everything I've read online states that the copper IUD is not necessarily proven to prevent implantation, and that its main function is preventing fertilization. What if I'm already past that point?

I am completely torn apart over this and could use anyone's thoughts or guidance. I know that he never ejaculated in me at all, so my risk lies in whether or not his precum contained any sperm, so that hopefully helps my case. And I know I made such a stupid mistake that I never will again, but I need to know whether it will really be worth it to get this procedure tomorrow. I'm so afraid it's too late. Anyone with a similar experience that can share?

Plan B (Levonorgestrel) Pill Fertile window took plan b, terrified

Hi everyone, im 19F I’m crying right now and have never been so scared please help

My last period started on October 17 and my cycles are usually around 28–31 days. Then, today (27) the condom broke and he finished inside me, which has sent me into an absolute panic I feel so so uncertain
I went straight to the pharmacy and took NorLevo about 2 hours after it happened. I’m around cycle day 11 and my Flo app predicts I’ll ovulate on October 30, so I’m absolutely terrified that I’m too close to ovulation for the pill to work. I asked the pharmacist for EllaOne because I’d read it’s better closer to ovulation, but they told me NorLevo was fine?
I’ve genuinely been crying all afternoon and feel sick with anxiety. Idk how to calm down I’ve never been through this before. Please be kind, I’m already really scared and just looking for some honest advice or experiences.

Plan B (Levonorgestrel) Pill

EllaOne (Ulipristal) having major regrets

Long story short I let my boyfriend cum inside 😭😭 i’m 19 and not on birth control so it was literally the dumbest mistake ever. I had it within 12 hours after on sunday and it’s now tuesday. I have been in so much pain since then. Insane stomach cramps and nausea, i called in sick for work monday and today but i have to go into work tomorrow because i have no sick leave to use now. How long will i feel like this for? I’ve been so anxious since it all happened and my boyfriend has apologised profusely even though i told him to do it but i just keep on getting upset at him because i just feel like a mess. I’ve read posts on here that people have broken up because of this and that the pill affects them for months afterwards. I didn’t do much research on it before it happened and then when i did i was so upset with myself. I’m so worried it won’t work and im really regretting the whole thing.

Plan B (Levonorgestrel) Pill Reassurance

I feel like I’m going crazy. My story is in the last post. I have unprotected penetration for a few strokes and panicked. Took a plan b. This was sept 25. Plane taken 12 hours later. I had what I think is withdrawal bleeding 4 days after taking the medication. I have taken a total of 5 at home pregnancy test due to symptoms of tender breasts, colics, decreased appetite and emotional… the 5th test taken today (30 days past the plan b) it was morning urine and it was negative. No period yet.

Plan B (Levonorgestrel) Pill Plan B ruined me and my relationship

I don’t know what to do. My boyfriend broke up with me. I took plan b in late March and ever since that I changed. Before I took that I was always a happy motivated person, I loved myself I was happy with who I was. And ever since I took the pill I had the worst side affects. For about 2 months out of nowhere I was insecure about his past rls. And every night I’d accuse him of things with her and I don’t even know why. Because before I took it I seriously did not care about her. I started being mean to him and I started being interested in partying but I never actually acted on it. I was so severely depressed that I took things like that kind of nightlife lifestyle as a mask as to what would make me feel better and I have no idea why. I don’t know what happened to me because before that I did not care whatsoever about that kind of life I was actually really Christian and against it. I don’t know if I lost myself and started holding on to things to hide that I truly was lost and depressed. Because it happened again and I know I fucked up badly. I texted my cousin after my bf threatened to break up when I was sicidal because he was overwhelmed and I had to go into work crying it was a whole mess and I always resented him for that it was about a month ago and ever since I would not believe him when he said he’d changed he started getting distant and I stopped caring, I stopped asking for communication for him to go back to loving me like he used to I just stayed silent for a month. And that ruined me. I sound really selfish I don’t know I’m also only 17. So why were broken up is because he went through my phone and in the text with my cousin it said how I was making a plan with a guy to hang out. And that looks terrible I know, but the real situation was really dumb and I don’t know if it’s a mental issue or the plan b effects but what happened was we were talking at work and he brought up Roblox and him and my bf are type t1d, and this is important for later. So I was like really and we wanted to play Roblox together and I said he should play with my bf sometime because my bf has no diabetic friends and I wanted him to meet him and stuff. And I tried explaining that to my bf but he doesn’t want to believe me and I understand why. He believes I cheated but my point was when I get depressed since plan b I have like a brain shift and it’s like to deal with the pain I put up I either want to attempt like v*pe or something to help it or in that moment I thought pretending to my cousin that like I’m the shit or something that I’m doing good and had options like her would make something better I don’t even know I can’t explain it I just hate myself so much and now we’re done and I get why but I truly loved him and I’m
Not asking for sympathy but I’m asking if plan b really ruined me as a person because ever since it I’ve been depressed, unmotivated, bad thoughts constantly and it was from March so I have no idea. I’m willing to fix myself if it’s getting on pills therapy I don’t know but I just want him. I hate that I said something stupid and not the entire story I over exaggerated it for no reason.

Has Plan B ever delayed your period? If so, how long was it delayed, and how long did it take for your cycle to return to normal?

I’m not asking what Plan B is, just about the timing. I am just curious. Thank you!!

EllaOne (Ulipristal) Am I fucked ? Day 6

Okay so this is not my first time on the Ellaone pill I’m 168lbs . It been a time where I took it late on day 5… all I got to say Ella always worked even when I’m ovulating each every time … I end up having intercourse on the Sep 21st like around 12am so late at night. I didn’t know I was ovulating that day on the 21st. The Ella pill was literally out of stock in all CVS pharmacy locations in my area I literally had to wait till Monday to get it which is today the 26th. So I take it today I know I’m definitely out 120 hour window to take it (day 6) I’m calmly panicking… I used to be on the Nuvaring which I’m considering getting back on. I got off it because I was bleeding for a month. Anybody been in the same boat

Plan B (Levonorgestrel) Pill Plan b after fertile window. Pls help

Hii I’m sorry if someone else already responded these but I’m truly freaking out because I don’t know what to do

Me and my boyfriend had protected sex today at like 2 am , he came inside but when he pulled out he noticed the condom stayed inside of me (we took it out of course) I checked on my health app on my phone and apparently my fertile window ended yesterday, which we never know if it’s accurate to showing the right times of ovulating or anything but I still took a plan B like at 4 am (around an hour or two after the intercourse ) but I don’t know what to do, are there chances I could get pregnant? I also am just very scared of also having to get the copper method but as well of the waiting game… I would appreciate some help or if someone has been in this situation :(

Plan B (Levonorgestrel) Pill Am I pregnant

My boyfriend and I had unprotected sex but it was just for a second. It was one day after my period ended and I took a plan B the next day. He didn’t ejaculate but I am scared there was precum. I weigh around 110 pounds.
