Municipal Affairs Ottawa 2026 municipal election: voter turnout by ward

Thumbnail gallery

Unofficial results from the City of Ottawa. Turnout is down in every ward, but about as many people voted as in 2022 (~314,400 vs ~316,300). The voters’ list also grew by about 146,000.

If you didn't vote

Absolutely no judgement here. If you didn't vote you are in the majority. People often overlook local politics for a variety of reasons.

I would love to know: why didn't you fill out a ballot?

Additionally, if you have an answer: what would/might get you enthusiastic about voting in the future?

I am asking these questions in earnest and in the hopes of maybe getting people out in the future because I believe getting people engaged is the best way to achieve positive results

There is a lot to be optimistic about with the election results last night

I've been following this election pretty closely, and it became clear to me months ago that Sutcliffe was going to be re-elected. Mainly because it is really, really hard to beat an incumbent mayor, and Leiper just wasn't running the type of campaign needed to pull off a major upset.

But I wanted to highlight why many people who were hopeful for a Leiper win should still be happy with last night's results:

  • Allan Hubley, one of the most conservative councillors, was unseated by progressive Erin Coffin (and it wasn't even close)
  • Outgoing councillor Glen Gower, former Watson Club member who voted with Sutcliffe 88% of the time, will be replaced by a more left-leaning candidate in Chelsea Walton
  • Joanne Chianello won by a huge margin over two more right-leaning candidates in Kichissippi
  • All the progressive incumbent councillors won by huge margins, including Sean Devine who faced an concerted effort by conservative councillors to unseat him
  • Sutcliffe's vote share declined by 7% and he received 20,000 fewer votes than he did in 2022, despite having the incumbency advantage
  • Many conservative councillors performed worse than they did in 2022, including Luloff (-38%) and Tierney (-19%)

So we'll have what is almost certainly the best City Council since amalgamation, with progressive councillors who were giving overwhelming mandates, conservative councillors whose support is eroding, and a mayor who was given a sharp indictment at the ballot box. That is a very promising outcome.

City election.

It seems to be like the population of Ottawa want two things. First they want public services improved, especially transit. They also insist on no increase on City taxes. So they vote for the guy who says I will not raise your taxes and then wonder why the services continue to deteriorate. You literally get what you pay for, although 1000 people will reply to this saying the city has more than enough money. We shall see.

Ward 1, The City Begins With A Joke.

It's official, this will be Luloff's final run as city councillor as having now been elected to a third term, he will be able to use that with his military career to move onto the Provincial or Federal scene as he had previously planned to do before. Not even a DUI can stop this machine, only slow it down. It was only fitting that his election party was held at a bar. I wonder how many drivers left there last night that might've been over 80 (0.08%) or in the 0.05 - 0.79 range? Cheers, everyone should get themselves a drink because we are the ones paying the tab.

Sunday 715pm Single-bike-bike-accident Thank you!

Thx to the 2 young couples who stopped after I fell off my bike. Offered first aid, called 911, & dispite my refusal continued insisting on driving me/my bike home! Thx to police managing traffic to keep us all safe.

Thx CoO for new roomy shoulders & bike lanes... the former of which I was testing out. Ironically, feeling "too safe", got distracted by full moon & unusual warm air. Result: I drifted off asphalt's edge. No prob. Rode the gravel, but saw rocks ahead. Panicked. Tried too quickly to get back on pavement. Toppled hard!

Aside from swelling/bruising, am almost back on my bike. Sara(h) & Stanley, thx for ur calm kindness. To the first-on-the-scene couple (sorry ur names continue to be fuzzy), thx for stopping & waiting to see I could bike back safely...and everything between. Thank you!

12 days of work, 60ft stretch, just me and my assistant (aka best friend) alongside 5 other Canadian Indigenous artists. The video shows my portion of the wall only, but overall the composition is 240ft long!

Thrilled to have been able to partake in this incredible undertaking. I hope to do more soon ♡

I think I'm calling my section of this work "Rivers Running Home."

Looking for... Family Neighbour neglects dogs. What can I do.

I should probably be asking somebody else for advice, but I need some extra direction for this. My mom has called (or so she claims) 3-5 times for this. Nothing has changed.

Long story short, I’ve been staying at my parents’ place until I move into my own place Nov 1 (less than a week).

EVERY. SINGLE. NIGHT. from 6p-3a (I’ve timed this shit) two dogs have been whining considerably without notice and barking consistently without care. I have tried to talk to the neighbour over the fence while I’ve been here, buddy just walks away and says to mind my own business. I’ve pushed back a couple of times, but he just goes inside (doesn’t try to escalate anything, just blatantly refuses to talk about it whatsoever).
I have to sleep with my windows open bc of whatever, and all I hear til 2-3am is constant whining from these dogs.

Idk if 311 jusy doesn’t care, or if things are taken care of (the dogs get let inside) by the time they come around, but fuck man. Is there anything I can do? I’m only here for two more weeks max, but should I start recording all this noise? Or just keep calling 311 for nothing to happen.
I feel so bad for these dogs and I’m hoping I can do more than just call useless idiots for days on end.

If anyone has dealt with this situation and has successfully helped those animals, please let me know. I feel like I’m at a loss and no one around cares. These dogs need SOME sort of help.

So what's the plan, progressives?

We need to organize ASAP for 2030 because this city will not move forward in any meaningful way with Sutcliffe in power. We'll see road-widening and costly sprawl, while we can only visit cities with hugely ambitious and creative initiatives around the world. Sutcliffe's campaign promises are conditional on uplifts (no doubt that's in the fine print), which won't happen any time soon. With Chow in power, Ford has a bigger distraction.

Who's going to step up? Someone like Laine Johnson, an outsider, someone else? Who can convince homeowners that a ~$5-10/month tax increase is well worth the benefits? Or what kind of scandal will it take to disrupt the status quo? Clearly some corruption/developer influence, DUIs, child-like social media attacks, and horrendous AI-slop aren't enough. So we need inspiration, not just common sense, evidence, or moral victories.

AMO declares Leiper as Mayor

Not sure what's going on with AMO (Association of Municipalities of Ontario, but their site says that Leiper won, even though the vote counts seem consistent with the official ottawa results.

Something must be glitching out on their site

Buy/Sell/Free Looking for a Table Tennis Table Donation

Hey Ottawa!

I'm part of the Table Tennis Club at Colonel By Secondary School in Ottawa, and we're looking for anyone who might be willing to donate a table tennis table to our club!

If you have a table sitting around that you no longer use, we'd really appreciate it if you'd consider donating it to our school! It doesn't have to be brand new, just in decent, playable condition.

If you or someone you know has a table they'd be willing to donate, please send me a DM!
Thanks

Municipal Affairs Get Up and Keep Fighting

So the results of the mayoral race were disappointing.

Wallowing in it, the turnout, FPTP voting, or whatever isn’t going to help. Despite Sutcliffe we still live in one of the best cities in one of the best countries in the world. I laugh at people talking about moving in the results thread - good luck to you, but you have absolutely no idea how good you have it here.

Let’s get up and keep fighting for a city worth fighting for. The city is more than the mayor, and we have some good city council members. At least one Sutcliffe lackey got voted out (Hubley). Keep pressing yours for changes in transit, affordable housing, and the change we want to see in this city. And look for someone more charismatic than Leiper and able to get out the vote next time around. Onwards and upwards.

ELI5! What I need to do/become, in order to be the mayoral candidate Ottawa wants in 4/8 years?

Imagine that I aspire to be the Mamdani for Ottawa. What do I need to do, how do I prepare 4/8 years ahead to win the people’s hearts ? To be their choice.

Every opinion counts, I want to know what I don’t know to be ready for when I ought to be.

Thank you
