I was with my wife in a cosy little restaurant in Alicante, Spain (where they use Euros of course) recently, on a trip to buy a modest holiday home. We were naturally talking about finances, in English, quietly (but just loud enough to hear if you trained your ear) about how she could move “2 million” to a certain account, and how “2 million” from my savings can be used, and how an apartment worth “3 million” could be bought outright, or with a mortgage of “a million” etc etc.
It occurred to me after the conversation that the woman next to us was looking at us a bit curiously. Then it occurred to me that she heard us casually talk about our millions but of course had no idea we were talking about Norwegian Kroner, not Euros or Pounds.
I do wonder what she was thinking of us!
Edit: The number of people missing the point is alarming. It’s about the misunderstanding about the 10x number of Kroner compared to Euros, and how “millions” sounds crazy to most Europeans. It’s not about currently conversion, and certainly not about bragging (it’s nothing to brag about anyway. So what if some people can buy a holiday house? Thousands do, or buy a fancy house in Norway. We have a modest house, so can afford a small holiday house or cabin).
