[Granger] Matthew Schaefer becomes first NHL player to skate entire 5-minute overtime period
New York Islanders defenseman Matthew Schaefer made history Tuesday night, becoming the first NHL player to skate the entire five-minute overtime period without leaving the ice since the league began officially tracking real-time ice time in 2009-10. The Islanders went on to beat the Nashville Predators 4-3 in a shootout.
Schaefer capped his marathon shift by skating back to defend a potential breakaway in the closing seconds of overtime. He chased down Predators forward Filip Forsberg and separated him from the puck before he could get a shot away.
It was also the longest shift by an Islanders skater on record (since 2009-10), passing the previous mark set by Casey Cizikas of 4 minutes, 50 seconds on March 9, 2023.
Schaefer led all skaters with 32:16 of total ice time and is averaging the fourth-most ice time per game of any player in the NHL this season. He also logged an assist for his 11th point of the season, which leads all Islanders defensemen and ranks eighth league-wide among blueliners.
It was also a notable evening for another Islander; Semyon Varlamov stopped 20 shots for his first NHL win in 712 days. His last victory came on Nov. 14, 2024. The veteran netminder returned to play this season after having each of his knees partially replaced. It was his 77th overall win with the Islanders, tying him with Roland Melanson for eighth place on the franchise’s all-time list.
