MOD POST Remembering and Honoring u/bluequail

It is with a heavy heart that I share some incredibly sad news with our community.

Our top mod [u/bluequail](u/bluequail) passed away on June 30th. I was informed on that day by her oldest son. He also announced it on her facebook page for those who knew her IRL.

bluequail was a vital part of this community, volunteering her time, energy, and passion to help make this space a welcoming and safe environment for everyone. She was an active mod in this same sub for over 16 years. It's incredibly rare to see that level of commitment and longevity these days. She was a great friend and I miss her.

She was a very kind woman who not only took care of her family, but was also very kind and generous to people in need everywhere. She donated a lot of money over the years to complete strangers on Reddit, in subs like [r/assistance](r/assistance) and [r/care](r/care). She helped people IRL too, and even welcomed some people into her own home. She also cared for animals on her farm.

My thoughts and prayers are with bluequail’s family, loved ones, and friends during this difficult time. Thank you all for being part of this community and for helping us honor her memory. Her presence will be deeply missed here.

I know she made many friends on Reddit under this username or her other account where she made most of her donations. I want to invite everyone to use the comment section below as a space to share your favorite memories, expressions of gratitude, or kind words in her honor.

Please keep all comments respectful and supportive.

Posting Guidelines

  • Posters and commenters must now have an account at least 15 days old with atleast 50 comment karma. These will be automatically removed if you do not meet the requirements.

  • Do not submit a post with a title in all caps, or a blank post with just a title. These will be removed automatically.

  • Please be specific with your headline rather than just saying you need advice, make it clear in your post about what you need help/advice about.

  • No polls or surveys.

Rules

Below are the rules of this sub. Disregarding any of these rules may result in a ban. Both posts and comments are subject to all rules.

  1. Nothing personal relationship, sex, or dating related or anything about stalking a person. Even commenting on these threads is a grounds for a ban.

— /r/needadvice is a subreddit for getting advice about things going on in our lives outside of our relationship with significant others, potential significant others, and significant others of days past. Your relationship, your parent's relationships, your friend's relationships... if you are dealing with any person's romantic relationship, it doesn't belong in here. (This is code for "no romance related stuff") No dating advice. No hookup advice. No sex related advice, including anything involving rape (even if it happened to you), molestation, or underage sexual activity.

  1. Nothing about personal messaging each other - Don't ask or tell posters or other commenters to PM, DM, or inbox you.

  2. No sharing/posting to drama subs - Anybody cross posting any threads to the drama causing subs (subreddit drama, any of the SRS, just anything to increase the drama in a thread) will be banned. That just won't be tolerated at any level. Don't tattle on the mods of other subs here either.

  3. No revenge submissions - No "How to get even" at all, not in submissions, not in comments.

  4. No threadjacking or comment qualifiers - Stay focused on OP's problem. If you disagree with someone else's advice, offer some advice of your own with a top level comment instead of debating. If you agree with someone's advice and have nothing to add, just upvote it.

  5. No misogyny, misandry, racism, religious intolerance, or similar - Respect one another, even those you disagree with. We're all equal here. It does not matter if you're male, female, null, both, or nongendered. It does not matter where your come from, or what color your skin is. When meeting someone from a different walk of life, treat that person as you would like them to treat you.

  6. No lying advice - Don't ask how to lie, don't advise on lying.

  7. No references to suicides - Anything related to suicidal ideations are not allowed. For the sake of yours or your family/friend's safety, anything mentioning suicide needs to go to /r/SuicideWatch

  8. No soliciting items or funds - Since we allow throwaways, don't solicit money in here. Please view any effort to solicit money in here as a scam. But any need for donations can go to /r/assistance or /r/care.

  9. No advertising - Do not link your subreddit (unless it is relevant to the subject matter of the post), your youtube page, your personal website, clickbait, or stuff for sale. Mods are the arbiters of what constitutes advertising.

  10. Kinda Safe for work - We know that lots of controversial and personal things get talked about here, and that's fine. Try to keep your titles safe for work by avoiding foul language and graphic descriptions.

  11. Nothing about missing persons - Don't ask about how to track someone down or find someone you used to know.

  12. No stand-alone jokes. A joke with legitimate advice is fine, but not by itself.

Ban Appeals

  • For ban appeals: Do not delete any of your comments and posts, especially if they were removed by the mods. Deleting submissions looks evasive, and it forces us to choose between your word and our memory. Only the mod that removed you can reinstate you.

  • Ask once.

  • Ask nicely.

Friendships Close friend of 14 years blocked me right after her wedding and now keeps wanting to add me again - what do I do?

So my (30F) friend (30F) got married a year ago and blocked me a day after her wedding which was so surprising. She said her husband insisted she does. Then she unblocked me and added me again. I let it slide considering we were super close for so many years.

She does it again after a month and I get actually worried thinking if she is in an abusive marriage. She tells me no she just did it specifically to me because the husband asked. Fine. I said ok enjoy the rest of your life.

She texts me again after a few months saying she wants to clear things up. I said sure call me. She said she will. Then doesn’t make any effort to.

Now she keeps sending me follow request on social media every other week after I delete it.
She also sends normal greeting messages like nothing happened.

What do I do? I don’t find any justification for this behaviour.

Friendships i think i "established a boundary" for the first time, but the event that led up to it still hurts me.

hello. this is my first post to here, it seemed appropriate. for context, i am a first year student that restarted university this year after a brief stint in a different major + a gap year. i did so much work on myself to even be able to talk with people beyond set phrases. i was very crippled from social anxiety (and avpd) alongside familial issues, but i feel i have managed to put at least some in the past with therapy. this year i am trying to venture to the university life to maybe garner some friends of my age unlike my first attempt at university where i gave up quickly.

our university had a student club fair and i joined a few group chats of clubs thanks to this fair. i then started to be very active in a group, as i am a very lonely person living away from my family and i have a recurring issue of devolving to a sort of attention-seeker in any forms of instant messaging (in fact this is why i stopped almost all of them besides one that people are supposed to conduct all affairs from for some reason.)

yesterday, in this group, i made an extremely local joke. it was apparently offensive and "exoticizing" (the subject of this joke were indeed exotic in the place i came from)

one person jumped out at me in the group chat. asked me if i thought i was funny. i hate this harsh social sanction disguised as a rhetorical question. asked me what was my deal. i had spent my gap year with minimal interactions, i had gotten out of a major depressive episode before it, so i had no array of comebacks to choose from. i just said my major and that's why i was interested in it. which i don't think is far off from the truth.

this person condescendingly told me "good for you" and that broke me. all this hard work i did to be seen among my peers, to be taken as an adult, and in one sentence i was revealed how alien i was to my "peers." remembering this makes me want to cry. i just wanted affection.

nobody did anything of course. i decided to revert back to my avoidance behaviour, but a lot more conscious i believe? i certainly didn't get angry at myself or blamed myself for it. hence the title "established a boundary." i decided to not participate in the group any further and got it off my mind though i can't help but check it still... i didn't participate in an event they had planned which i was looking forward to and it seems they don't miss me either.

i want to be seen now, after years of hiding, but no one is around to see me.

what are some options available to me to grieve this? i do have a therapy appointment tomorrow.

Other My little brother smells so bad and i wish i knew why

I hate being the one that can smell stuff strongly. My little brother (13) smells like milk that's about to expire, and it's affecting me the most because I can smell him from another room. It started happening sometime around last month.

No one else said anything until I pointed it out. My mom has a perfume that fixed my sister's bad smell, but my little brother doesn't like it because it's perfume.

His clothes are what smell that way, but I don't know what. He eats the same thing as everyone else, spends a lot of time on his laptop (mostly drawing dreamworks characters or watching movies), and showers once a day, idk why.

But his clothes are on him, so obviously he's the one that smells like it. Right now i wish he would just put on the perfume so the smell can go away but he's being stubborn, and if i spray the room then my dad will get mad at me.

I thought it was my cat, since my little brother is always trying to hold her, but she smells like shampoo, and the smell started long before we got her.

Motivation Any advice for feeling like I have nothing to add in life?

I’m 21 years old and I’ve been pretty aimless these last few years. I have no idea what I want to do with my life, no career ideas, no hobbies, wanted to go to college but don’t know what to even go for. I have no friends, and live in an area far away from anything interesting so it’d be a hassle if I even wanted to go out somewhere, and I quit my draining overnight job a year ago so I haven’t really have anything to preoccupy my brain with. Just been living with my parents helping with the pets.

Thanks to all this, any time I have to interact with someone is kinda embarrassing and depressing for me. I was already not the best socially, but now I don’t even have any idle garbage to say when I’m asked what I’m up to, and have to hear the same variation of “everyone goes at their own pace”. I feel like I shouldn’t even bother opening my mouth at this point.

I get really anxious about normal events now. My sister wants me to meet and hang out with her partners brothers, but I’m really not into the idea. I don’t really want strangers first impression of me to be what I am now, I’m not great company. My family was invited to a wedding that I have to attend this week and I’m not remotely close to the bride like my mother and sister are, I’m positive she doesn’t care if I show up or not but Iim not in a position to refuse since I have nothing else to do. I’m worried about the wedding because I’ll have to talk to people and I’m sure I’ll be asked what I’m up to and have to embarrassingly explain once again that I don’t know what to do.

Im not sure if this makes sense but to sum it up I feel like as a person I can’t add to anything in life, not to my own or anyone else’s. Advice?

Interpersonal Am I overreacting? I just feel angry that my dad doesn't wanna help me

My parents live in another city, and my dad have a very close friend who is staying at the city where I am for a couple of weeks, so they told me to buy some things and my mom's meds and send it through that friend to save some shipping fees.

I already told my parents I'm gonna go to the friend's house on Friday, and they told him and he's fine with it. Just not the exact time. I already told my parents I am available at 1:00 - 2:00 pm but my dad didn't tell him that. Instead he gave me his friend's number and told me to coordinate that with him. I'm not close at all to that friend unlike my dad who talks to him almost daily. I told my dad to just tell his friend I'm gonna go at 1:00pm and he says it's my responsibility and that I should talk with his friend(I know him but never really talked to him besides a hi). Now I am really hating that my dad doesn't wanna help me and make me go out of my way to add his friend, talk to him(I can't send a txt because he can't read english too well and it's better for me to explain it in my broken chinese since that's his first language)

Other I’m autistic and need advice making new friends

I have been here before, on other accounts, ussally I ask my mentor for help, but this one is a bit embarrassing. There is a group of people who are very nice to me in one of my classes, and i would like to hang out with them during break. My current plan is to wait until Friday, to ask them “can I sit with you guys at break?”. I’m not sure if that’s the right approach. Yes they know I’m autistic. Should I do it during break? Should i not do it at all? I don’t know. It would make school easier if I had friends here, since all my friends are either finished school, or at another school and a year younger. I want friends my age

Career An Injury is leaving it hard for me to work

( this is not a medical question I’ve been to the doctor and have a treatment plan!!) I recently tore my ACL and won’t be able to get surgery on it until January. In the meantime, I’m unable to work at my current job due to the physicality and had to stop interviewing for another new job I was applying for for the same reason.
I know everyone is going to say “remote work” but it ain’t that easy to find a remote job when my resume is filled with more physical credentials. I got an art degree for gods sake! The average remote role isn’t going to hire me, so what should I do? Are there any weird side hustles less able bodied people are doing?

Other Seeking Advice Regarding a Dog Attack

Hi, I wanted to ask for your advice on how to handle a situation that happened recently.
I was walking my dog when I noticed another dog loose on the street. It followed me, so I tried to find its owner. Eventually, the dog led me to its owner’s house, and I rang the doorbell. Unfortunately, the owner had another dog inside—a Doberman—that came out and attacked me. For context, I’m 5’3”.
Despite the owner’s attempts to call the dog back, it continued trying to attack me. When her husband came out to help, he also struggled to get the dog under control until he eventually managed to grab it and pull it back inside.
As a result, I injured my right knee, sprained my right ankle, and scraped my left calf. I sought medical attention and have documentation of my injuries, which I’ve already shared with the owners.
I initially asked the owners how they wanted to handle the situation and explained that I would file a police report if necessary. They mentioned that they would need to go through their insurance.
I was simply trying to help return the loose dog safely because I was concerned it could get hurt in the street. Unfortunately, I ended up being injured while trying to help.
I’ve reached out to the owner to discuss a reasonable settlement, but before deciding on my next steps, I wanted to get some advice. Would you recommend continuing to work toward a resolution directly with the owners and their insurance company, or filing a police report as well? I’d appreciate any insight into how best to protect myself and handle this situation.

Mental Health How do I “exposer therapy” my fear of alcohol away?

OK so for context I had a really bad experience with alcohol about a year ago. Like “almost died” bad, long story but I accidentally combined sleeping pills and Vodka. I always get super scared that I took a sleeping pill or a pain killer before I drank and simply forgot about it and that I poisoned myself. It’s all I can think about every time I drink even if it’s objectively stupid.

How do I stop thinking like this? I usually set a timer 10 hours before I want to drink anything and make absolutely sure I don’t even get near sleeping pills or Advil. It’s sorta a reminder that I will be fine, it helps a bit but I want more than just that.

Before you say it, I’m not going to therapy. I understand that your therapist is super awesome, but everyone’s going through their own journey, and for me personally therapy is not helpful and I don’t have money to pay for it right now.

(Also I don’t have an alcohol problem, I only really drink once every 2-3 weeks and I only do it at home. No drinking and driving, no sketchy bars, no overdoing it, I don’t even really drink with other people.)

Career I’m 24 and feel lost in life. How do I find my direction?

I’m 24 and honestly feel lost in life. I don’t know what career path to take, what my hobbies or interests are, or what I genuinely want to do with my life.

It’s affecting my confidence, happiness and relationship with my girlfriend. I feel like I should have things figured out by now, but I don’t even know where to start.

For anyone who has been through something similar, what helped you find your direction? What advice would you give your 24 year old self?

I’d genuinely appreciate any advice or personal experiences.

Mental Health I keep involuntarily making sounds, noises, words and shouts for no reason and I don’t know why?

So, I don’t know if I’m in the right place for this, but I hope so.

This has been getting worse over the last 3 years- I repeatedly keep feeling the need, when alone or with my partner, to make noises. It varies from making unintelligible noises, to words (sometimes saying hello/ good night/ goodbye, especially if my partner is in the room), to swearing at nobody / nothing at all. I just said fuck off twice to an empty room in a sing song voice and I have no idea why.

It’s not really something I want to go to a doctor about (particularly as frankly, healthcare in my country really won’t care about this) and so far I’m managing to not have the impulses around other people so it’s not life ruining

I just want to know why I can’t seem to stop it…

Life Decisions Should I quit my part-time job if I'm feeling burnt out with school and other responsibilities?

Hi everyone,

I actually posted a similar question in r/careerguidance, but I wanted to see what people here think as well.

I'm a 3rd-year college student majoring in CS, and I'm considering quitting my part-time job as a pharmacy tech. I only work about once a week for 6-7 hours, but lately I feel like I'm burning out.

This semester I'm taking 5 classes, I'm a commuter, and I also do research at my university. The research is pretty flexible since most of it can be done on my computer, and the professor I work with is very laid back about deadlines and scheduling.

Some days I leave home around 6:30 AM and don't get back until 6:00-7:30 PM. On those days, I have absolutely no energy left to study or do homework. By the time the weekend comes around, I just want to sleep, relax, and recover from the week. After work, I usually feel so drained that I end up watching Netflix, scrolling TikTok, or doing anything except schoolwork. Then I feel guilty because I know I should be using that time to study.

One thing that makes this decision easier is that I already accepted a co-op offer for the spring that will pay about $10/hour more than my pharmacy tech job. Also, money isn't a huge concern right now because I'm fortunate enough that my parents cover my tuition and most of my expenses.

On the other hand, I feel guilty about the idea of having no income for a few months. I like contributing to my Roth IRA and investing a little money here and there.

Another thing holding me back is that I'm a very introverted and socially awkward person. Honestly, this job is one of the only things that forces me to interact with coworkers and customers, and I feel like it's helped me get a little more comfortable talking to people. If I quit, I'm worried I'll lose that.

There are also a couple of toxic coworkers who can really ruin my mood some days, which definitely doesn't help.

So I'm kind of torn. Part of me thinks I should focus on school, research, my health, and getting sufficient rest. The other part of me worries I'll regret quitting, losing income, and stepping away from one of the few situations that pushes me out of my comfort zone socially.

What would you do in my situation? Do you think quitting sounds reasonable, or am I overlooking something?

Thanks for any advice.

Friendships Struggling to make a consistent college friend group

I’m a freshman at college and I’m struggling a lot right now with my social life. I went from seeing my friends and family every single day to just maybe seeing people on evenings and it hurts.

I have my evenings open as I get all my work done during the day and I try to ask in the group chat of 5 or so people if anyone wants to do anything, or go exploring or just walking with me in the city, watch a movie or whatever and recently I’ve texted like three times in the chat and got no responses.

When we do hangout we have so much fun and I can tell we get along but I’ve been initiating a lot and it not really going anywhere.

I’ve been getting over my fear of initiating and reaching out, plus the whole bit about “I don’t want to bother them” or “I don’t want to seem too desperate” but I just want to have company on the evenings when I can and I don’t know if I am bothering people by my asking.

There’s one person that I’ve gotten close to but again I feel weird reaching out so much directly to them and don’t want to seem clingy.

I’m perfectly happy doing my own thing and exploring during the day but I just feel so lonely during those evenings where I have nothing to do that I want to cry.

Friendships Advice to help my friend out who is going through it and won’t listen to my advice

I’m just worried about my friend

So it’s been a while I started college and our college is kinda intense a lot of pressure and work and competition and most of us kinda started therapy because of the work load and family issues or just talk to each other but there’s this one friend of mine who is feeling burnt out and u can see her spark reducing each time u see her she told her roommate who told me that she’s kinda feeling depressed (idk how bad it is cuz she’s not giving much details) and she’s not been able to complete her work cuz of her anxiety or what she’s going through I’ve been there for her it seems like she can’t bear the stress and the workload from college which is understandable but in my mind I can understand but I feel like you can see it coming. I’ve tried to get her to see a therapy since our college offers free therapy and she’s not ready to try since her mom visited her and told her she’s overreacting about the stress and work idk what to do I just heard form her she fainted and been feeling light headed idk what to do she won’t listen to me about therapy and i try to be there for her but even there is workload on me so I can’t be there for her 24/7

Friendships How do I talk my friend out of buying alcohol for his 13-year-old niece?

My friend (M36) has bought his 13-year-old niece four BuzzBallz for a Halloween party next weekend. She asked for two, but he bought four because they were on offer. He even suggested she could sell two to make her money back.
I’ve voiced my concerns, but he’s still going to give them to her. He drank at 13/14 himself, so I don’t think he sees it as a big deal.
We don’t even know whether adults will be supervising. She’s already got a difficult home life, and I feel like her uncle should be looking out for her.
We haven’t fallen out, but I want to bring it up again before the party. How can I get him to take my concerns seriously without sounding like I’m lecturing him?

Mental Health Help! I Can’t Sleep Without AC, But I Wake Up With Weird Breathing Any Advice?

Guys, I have a breathing issue that seems to get worse when I sleep with the AC on at night, and I'm looking for advice. 😭

I can't sleep without the AC at night because my parents insist on keeping it on. But whenever I wake up in the morning after sleeping with the AC, my breathing feels weird, like something isn't right. Interestingly, I don't have much of a problem when the AC is on during the afternoon, but at night and by the next morning, I feel uncomfortable with my breathing.

Even car AC doesn't suit me. I usually try to keep the windows open, but my family scolds me for it. 😭 I also get motion sickness on hilly roads, like when travelling to Kerala or Ooty, so I usually carry Amrutanjan with me.

My main concern is the breathing issue after sleeping with the AC. Has anyone experienced something similar? Could it be because of the cold air, dryness, dust in the AC filter, or something else? What can I do to prevent this, especially since I can't avoid using the AC at night?

Any advice would be really appreciated! 🙏

Btw I checked my breathing its normal idk why this happens? am I mentally affected?

Family Loss Might have found bio father 2 years after my Mum passed away - what would you do?

Hello, Reddit

Looking for some advice or opinions to bounce around

I've never had any interaction with my bio father, not even named on my birth certificate.

The man I call my Dad has been in my life since I was 3 years old and I love him very much.

I'm 30 next year, my Mum passed away in 2024 and she was the only one who had ever had contact. I had a name and she told me when I was younger when she asked me that she told him I wasn't interested and that he had other daughters since. I...don't know if he's ever attempted reaching out really.

I've never quite been able to shift an uncertainty surrounding this and every time I've searched the name before I've never had a result (it's unique) until tonight

Anyhow - I don't know if I should message

Thing is I can't even tell what I'm trying to gain from this. My Mum is gone, that link is gone. I don't know if I have something in the back of my mind that he should at least know that she's passed if he's tried reaching out?? I don't think I want to build anything at this stage in my life anyway as I have my Dad and I'm not exactly a youngster

I don't know who to even discuss this with, I don't think I could tell my Dad even

Interpersonal How do I grapple with the fact that, outside of how someone treated me, theyre a good person?

I'm sorry if this is vague because I dont want to go into details of what happened. But I blame everyone who was involved. I blame the perpetrator, the person who defended it and called me a jealous liar, the friends that i lost because they didnt believe me. The friends and the perpetrator don't mean much to me. But the second person I'm for some reason the most mad at. I guess I expected more from them given their role.

But theyre otherwise living a good life, at least displaying one. They're christian. They're in a public service field, caring for people who need the extra care. Their tiktok reposts are about anti ice and pro love and kindness. I dont get it. They were vile to me. Ive been going through severe depressive episodes for months because of what happened to me, some resulting in hospital stays, 2 voluntary and 2 involuntary. But theyre so pro mental health and being kind and loving one another. Why not me? Why didn't they hear me out or display any of that love and kindness and sympathy to me?

Friendships Housing Dilema - who do i live with?

I currently live with sevenother girls, and i’m fairly close to them all. Next year, the group is splitting up, and I’m feeling pressured to choose between two close friends.

Person A asked me to live with her and another girl next year. I agreed because Person A and I spend more time together than I do with most of the others. We often spend time together and we’re very close, and I genuinely enjoy being around her. I do want to live with Person A, which is why I said yes.

However, I’m also very close to Person B. We also currently live together, spend a lot of time together, and I really enjoy her company. When I told her that I had agreed to live with Person A, she was very mature and understanding. She didn’t make me feel guilty or create any drama, which I appreciated, but it also made me feel more conflicted. Person B is fun, relaxed, and someone I feel very comfortable living with.

The difficult part is that I feel as though Person A was the driving force behind the group splitting up. I don’t necessarily mean that in a negative way, because she has her own reasons for wanting a different living arrangement, and I understand that everyone is allowed to choose who they live with. However, because she initiated the conversation and asked me to join her, I now feel as though I was pushed into making a decision when i’d rather us all just live together again.

I’m not sure whether the decision is completely final yet, but I feel like I’ve already committed to Person A. At the same time, part of me is wondering whether I should reconsider and live with Person B instead. I like both of them and genuinely want to live with both of them, so this feels less like choosing between a good and bad option and more like choosing between two people I care about. I’m worried that I’m effectively choosing a favourite, even though that isn’t how I feel.

There’s also Person C, who is very close to Person A. Person A has some personal reasons for not wanting to live with Person C next year, and I understand that those reasons may be valid. However, those reasons haven’t been properly explained to Person C, so she may be completely blindsided when she finds out that Person A is making other housing plans without her.

Person C isn’t particularly close to the rest of the group, so I’m worried about how she’ll find somewhere to live and who she’ll live with. I feel uncomfortable knowing that she may be left in a difficult position, especially because she and Person A are close.

I understand that choosing housemates is personal, and nobody is obligated to live with someone just because they are friends. I also don’t want to make Person A seem like a bad person or suggest that she isn’t allowed to make this decision. My concern is more about how the situation is being handled and whether Person C should be told directly and given enough time to make her own housing arrangements.

I’m now feeling stuck. I reallyt do want to live with both person A and B. Person A and B can’t live together due to other commitments btw. but i just have no idea what is best for me and everyone else.
