I'm currently a junior majoring in Computer Science, and I have about 1.5 semesters left before graduating.
With all the layoffs happening across tech, especially at companies like Microsoft, Oracle, and Meta, I've been thinking a lot about what I should be doing while I'm still in college to prepare myself for the job market.
I'm already getting some industry experience, and have a RO lined up, but I'm wondering if I should consider picking up a minor, learning something outside of traditional software engineering, or focusing on a particular specialization.
I've also noticed more conversations about data centers, cloud infrastructure, and cybersecurity, and I'm curious whether these are areas worth exploring.
For those already working in the industry, what would you recommend to a CS student who's getting close to graduation?
Would you pursue a minor, focus on certifications, develop skills in another area, or just stick with CS and keep building experience?
I'm not necessarily trying to switch majors. I just want to make the most of the time I have left and give myself more options after graduation.
