Wilds Playing handheld just hits different

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Eventhough I already have a copy on PS5 and have done all the content, I ultimately pre-ordered on Switch 2 because being able to play Wilds on the go just hits different. Sure, graphics look like chicken soup in handheld, but the frame rate and repsonsiveness are surprisingly great. Pity I will have to regrind the entire thing again in December (Gog gives me PTSD).

Does it look great? No. Does it feel great? Absolutely.

u/L13on 5d ago

What a finisher! Glad you’re having a blast

4

u/amphorousish 5d ago

Yeah, I fell off of playing a while ago so right now I'm just getting used to the controls again, but I'm going to end up wringing this demo dry before the release.

6

u/omgzphil 5d ago

I'd take this than how it runs on my steam deck Might double dip. I'm sad still no cross save. Oh well

4

u/AJ_Dali 5d ago

I'm still holding out some hope that the lower settings the NS2 has come over to PC to low end systems.

5

u/RoyVanG 5d ago

Shoryuken!

1

u/TokwaDoodles 5d ago

How's the battery life?

3

u/L13on 5d ago

About 2 hours

6

u/amphorousish 5d ago

Probably not great, but I just messed around with the first few hunts yesterday and didn't pay attention.

Later today I'll start from 100% and come back here with the battery % after playing for a bit.

4

u/amphorousish 5d ago edited 5d ago

TIL that you can't take a screenshot of the quick menu.

This was after a bit over 45 mins (long lunch/lost track of time) at this brightness setting, this volume (no headset), and using NYXI Hyperion 3 controllers (attached, lights & rumble off).

Edit: And having selected offline play.

5

u/ZetsuboItami 5d ago

I prefer playing games handheld. There's something about the freedom to lay down or switch to comfortable positions while gaming that make it easier to play for long periods of time. Plus the portability to bring it to work when I feel like it. It's why I always preferred having a laptop to a desktop. Better than always having to face the TV and sit in ways the controller feels comfortable.

3

u/L13on 5d ago

Exactly the reason why I am willing to double dip for the Switch 2 copy of Wilds!

1

u/Owobowos-Mowbius 4d ago

What i wouldnt give for a full switch 2 port of World!!!

1

u/L13on 4d ago

That would be the dream. But I recall Capcom made a comment they wouldn’t bring World to the Switch 2

2

u/ZetsuboItami 5d ago

Especially with the preorder sale going on. My birthday is shortly before that so I plan on getting it a week or so before the release.

4

u/Darksys0816 2d ago

I downloaded the demo and tried it out in handheld mode (SW2). It’s just too ugly for me—blurry and, in a way, strange. I suspect there are DLSS artifacts. I can’t play it like this. I’ve just come from playing The Witcher 3 Remaster, which looks fantastic—even in handheld mode—and, above all, is sharp.

3

u/L13on 2d ago

And I think that's totally fair! Visual compromises had to be made for Wilds to run on the Switch 2, and I'm okay with that. But I can see how the visuals might put off some

4

u/Impaled_ 5d ago

Hand cramps included lol

2

u/L13on 5d ago

Got grips installed. Super comfy for hour long sessions (:

2

u/windows10player 5d ago

Which ones?

1

u/L13on 5d ago

Savage Raven FissionGrip!

2

u/EnviousSock 5d ago

It's a great price too - £26 pre-order in the UK. I also get a cheeky 11% off due to a work scheme

2

u/L13on 5d ago

That's incredible value! Ngl one of the reasons why I decided to pre-order was because of the sale

2

u/GingerWitch666 3d ago

Tbf I've been day one on ps5 and I still haven't beat omega or gog 🫠

2

u/L13on 3d ago

No worries. I’ve not done Savage Omega either 😂

1

u/GingerWitch666 3d ago

Oh thank God, it's not just me 🤣 And I've been playing since freedom united 😭😭😭 lmao

155

u/Tybalto 5d ago

Wholeheartedly agreed. I can play sitting on the couch on the TV and then just pick up monster hunter and play in bed before sleep. Just as Gog intended.

46

u/Spite-ninja 5d ago

Before class? Hunt. Lunch break? Hunt. Pick up line for the kid? Hunt. Make the kid jump in the lobby, HUNT

39

u/Lioreuz 5d ago

Back in my days we played DURING class. God bless PSP era.

12

u/Spite-ninja 5d ago

I had noted back then how the psp's design was narrow and allowed for hiding in your coat to play in class. I was ON it. The ds made a sound when you opened it, some BS right there.

2

u/Monstar132 5d ago

A Hoonter must Hoont

1

u/Spite-ninja 5d ago

This one gets it

1

u/Bregneste 5d ago

As long as all of that takes less than like two hours, otherwise you’re running out of battery lol

2

u/Spite-ninja 5d ago

Always carry a pack on me, plus a charger. Accessories for days

1

u/Guilty-Ad-5228 5d ago

me and my friends ended up missing a quiz one time because we were playing MH, we didnt realize we had missed the quiz until people from our class started coming out of class asking where we were, we were like 10 meters away from the classroom

-5

u/SolidusDave 5d ago edited 5d ago

In our home we do exactly that routine with the PS5+Portal already :D

maybe good to mention in case people want to avoid to replay everything (and want nicer graphics).

3

u/welwood 5d ago

I LOVE my portal. I use it all the time. Home or away it's always a blast to use.

2

u/AJ_Dali 5d ago

I'll probably pick it up on NS2 just because of the price, but I don't see a reason to grind through Gog weapons. The game releases in December, and the DLC is slated for next year. I'd be surprised if it doesn't come out between January and March because that's usually when they drop MH and updates. The console release of Iceborn was pretty much the only outlier.

Even if it gets pushed to April, that's a lot of grinding for something that'll be obsolete in about 4 months.

22

u/setonfire_ 5d ago

How am I supposed to hunt chicken, toad and croc only til december. I'm having too much fun even after 90ish hours on pc

7

u/setonfire_ 5d ago

Wish they did as it was in beta where we could hunt as online gang and Rey Dau. that was fun

3

u/Entire_Paramedic_389 5d ago

you can also hunt doshaguma btw. Its out in the field in the quematrice optional quest

3

u/setonfire_ 5d ago

I totally overlooked it and went for the chicken and now the quest is over -.-

2

u/Entire_Paramedic_389 5d ago

you can repeat it lol. Talk to Alma at base camp and select optional quest then Quematrice and its on the map

2

u/setonfire_ 5d ago

Well I’ll be damned xD you’re right! I saw it but haven’t tried to restart it xD thanks !

1

u/SuperKamiZuma 5d ago

Oh really? Thanks!

28

u/Fyuira 5d ago

And that's why the Japanese were so excited for Rise. For them MH was meant to be played on a handheld.

13

u/nakahi70 5d ago

I started monster hunter on the PSP. To me it will always be a handheld game. Glad to see wilds holds up well on switch 2

2

u/Ichizuko 5d ago

Same, I started with 4 Ultimate in 2013. Monster Hunter will always be best in handheld for me and I do love the overall scope and feel of the console world sizes. I am so god damn happy Wilds is coming to switch it gives me a reason to play again since I stopped when Gogmazios came back(randoms kept dying 20x more than I did so I stopped trying lol)

20

u/xxNinjaKI 5d ago

Would’ve probably been a buy for me even though I’m not a fan of double dipping on games. But the lack of cross saves was an instant no for me unfortunately.

I’ve just never seen the appeal in buying a game again that you gotta start from scratch when you already have it on other modern hardware.

4

u/rezignator 5d ago

I've done it a few times, but pretty much only for PC ports when they're super cheap on Steam. Like I rebought Dragon's Dogma on PC when the port came out and Dragon Age: Origins because I wanted to play it again.

1

u/n1Cat 3d ago

Same here. Origins is a different beast on PC also.

3

u/Owobowos-Mowbius 4d ago

It would make sense for me if it was an older game like World. I want to replay that game from scratch.

But wilds? Right before the dlc? No thanks.

1

u/ZetsuboItami 5d ago

I like replaying games myself, plus I've been in positions where consoles broke or weren't available to me for different reasons, so I like having multiple ways to play games I really enjoy. I would prefer if cross-saves were a thing since I beat the game on PS5, but since I can take my Switch to work and knock out a hunt or two on my lunch I know it'll be easy to finish again before Ascendance.

1

u/JeannieLove13 3d ago

I started over on Rise when it came to Playstation, I had to start over on Generations cuz my MH4U New Nintendo 3DS was stolen, I got Wild Hearts on Switch 2 to start over... It's for the thrill of the hunt, not to obsessively grind, that's what the PS5 Pro is for.

7

u/mrduka 5d ago

Wilds + satisfye grip will consume my life lol

6

u/KingNibble 5d ago

As someone with a toddler this is perfect to sneak in a few mins where possible! I had to drop wilds after she became more mobile no i can catch up to my friends!

5

u/AJ_Dali 5d ago

It's the only way to play Wilds with a permanent pause option. When playing single player you can pause the game, but if you're in a multiplayer hunt you don't get the option.

With the NS2 you should be able to just put it in sleep mode. It'll drop you to offline and pause, very helpful when you have young kids.

3

u/KingNibble 5d ago

Oh 100% I used to take the night shift so my wife could get some rest and I could squeeze in some time to play, it eventually became impossible because it'd wake her up now I have to pick moments carefully and having the option to stop whenever would be amazing

2

u/AJ_Dali 5d ago

Just a heads up, I'd assume it'll follow the same pattern as MHGU and Rise on the NS1. So if you're online and press the home button it won't pause, but when you're offline it will.

1

u/KingNibble 5d ago

Thats cool its more about portability and not on a big screen for me. Thanks for the heads up though!

2

u/Spurlz 5d ago

If only there was cross save with PC, I would double dip…

1

u/L13on 5d ago

I wished Capcom would implement it too, but seeing how MH Rise is, I'm doubtful.
Capcom doesn't seem to realize how many more players they can pull in if they'd just do cross save...

10

u/g_hunter 5d ago

I hope they bring the same optimization to the steamdeck. Seems like a wasted opportunity if they don’t.

6

u/Ostanes_hub 5d ago

It would be great if we could donwload this version of the game on pc.
Not only it runs like ass on steamdeck, also it takes more than 2 times the space.

2

u/TokwaDoodles 5d ago

I was about to redownload it on my deck. Glad to have seen this comment

2

u/RubberDuxk 5d ago

Honestly I just stream it to my deck from the PC. The native steam streaming works fine on MH Wilds

2

u/Hikaru321 5d ago

A producer (I think, it was someone higher up in the game’s dev team) in a post shared here a few days ago said the switch’s optimizations could help the other consoles. He did use the word “could” in fairness so can’t say if it’s a guarantee

1

u/sab0tage622 5d ago

Same. Ive been working through the game all over again since i got a pc and bought the game again there. And i plan on getting a switch 2 at some point (even if its just for ravenous), but i certainly dont want to start over again, so heres hoping some of those improvements translate over to the game running decent on steam deck.

5

u/Acrobatic-Republic75 5d ago

I have vivid memories of me playing monster hunter 4u before and during (I was a bad student lol) college classes.

Love that wilds is on the switch 2.

4

u/EvilAbdy 5d ago

So tempted to double dip like I did with rise/break

3

u/Spite-ninja 5d ago

The visuals take a hit, but it feels so good

4

u/Gabiboune1 5d ago

Chicken soup...😂🤣 Switch 2 is my main console (I still have my PS5 for GTA and Silent Hill) I play a bit of Rise couple months ago. I just download the demo, never play wilds before 😊 I think i'm going to pre order the game soon too !!

3

u/Next-Loan5970 5d ago

This is how the game looks on my potato ass pc anyway lmao

1

u/AJ_Dali 5d ago

It looks drastically better docked. I've played the XSS version and the NS2 version looks and plays way better.

Now, handheld is very crunchy, but I've been playing since the PSP days and played the 3DS versions, so it's normal for me.

I just wish they'd add cross-saves, because unless the extra low settings from NS2 come to PC I won't be able to play this handheld without starting over.

They really should let the other systems use it, because XSS in particular is borderline unplayable and having some of these settings would smooth it out.

3

u/Caius21 5d ago

I don‘t own a switch2 yet but will get one and I suppose also mh wilds. How‘s the general consensus? From your video it does not look that bad to be honest. I excepted something worse. I tried it on the steam deck but I did not liked it there

2

u/mauribanger 5d ago

I tried it on the steam deck but I did not liked it there

I think the big performance patch has not arrived to the PC version yet

2

u/Entire_Paramedic_389 5d ago

it looks very comprised to be on the switch but it still looks like mh wilds and there's no hitching or weird frame issues its smooth and consistent. There are options for quality and performance and to cap or uncap the framerate. Performance uncapped hovers in 40s-50s

3

u/Jrocks721 5d ago

Ugh…. Really wish it had cross save

2

u/NotAkihisa 5d ago

I now it supposed to be a dessert like map but why does it look so empty

2

u/Entire_Paramedic_389 5d ago

the switch version drastically reduces whats on the map. Grass is cut back to pop in as you get close and not as dense, small creatures only appear when you're close and their numbers are reduced too

2

u/xxNinjaKI 5d ago

How’s that gonna work in cross play?

1

u/Entire_Paramedic_389 4d ago

small creatures and stuff will just fade in/out due to proximity and they already have lower framerate animations

2

u/Proof_Duty1672 5d ago

This is the way…

2

u/Chemical_Low_8506 5d ago

Yes, MH on a handheld console, for me, that’s part of the game’s essence.

Then again, I started out on the 3DS with 4U.

I was happy to rediscover that feeling with World and Rise on Steam Deck Too bad the optimization for Wilds is still so messed up on the PC version, I still don’t get a good feel for it when playing on Steam Deck. I hope they’ll fix that

2

u/musclenugget92 5d ago

Streaming this game from my pc to my steam deck is so much fun

1

u/sasuku123 5d ago

This is on the onexplayer 3 at 15w, capcom did a great job at optimizing it as best they could

3

u/L13on 5d ago

Looks great. But it costs 3x the Switch 2 🥲

1

u/sasuku123 5d ago

Yeah that’s definitely the negative of it but if you’re able to push through and get one, it’s an amazing handheld with a beautiful screen, the performance wows me everytime and the fact I can dock it to the tv, I practically don’t need a ps5 anymore

1

u/heroxoot 5d ago

Ive been playing since launch on handheld PCs. Hopefully this runs more consistent being a console version. I'd love to see the comparison against low settings PC which is what I have to play on for my XAX.

1

u/L13on 5d ago

I'd be interested too! I have a ROG Ally Z1E. I tried the demo on it, but it ran and looked awful to the point that I felt it detracted away from the entire experience. The Switch 2 version looks and runs significantly better.
I also have a more powerful MSI Claw 8 AI+, but have not tried Wilds on it because at that point last year I decided I'd just stick to my PS5 instead.

2

u/heroxoot 3d ago

On the ROG Xbox Ally X it plays 30fps on lowest settings but 1080p quite easily. I use Framegen to bump it to 60 and it's fine. I can't feel too much difference between it and my desktop doing 120fps without frame gen on highest (HD textures off) settings.

1

u/LexandViolets 5d ago

I want to get RiseBreak on my Steam Deck so bad.
I never played the DLC and I played the base game on Switch.

Does RiseBreak run well on SD?

1

u/L13on 5d ago

Unfortunately, I only have RiseBreak on my og Switch 1 so I can't comment on the Deck's performance

1

u/PedanticButCorrect 4d ago

Really wish they added gyro aiming for the guns like in rise. And the arm pellet shooter thing while they are at it

2

u/L13on 4d ago

There is gyro controls. And my game play used gyro for aiming

1

u/PedanticButCorrect 3d ago edited 3d ago

Is there anyway to change the axis being used for left and right movement for handheld? They have two separate settings for handheld and tv mode but no way to change the axis. The axis they’re using now for left and right only makes sense for using a controller with a tv 😭 they didn’t make this mistake on Rise. It doesn’t make sense to move the console like a steering wheel as if I’m driving

1

u/VacationOne5585 1d ago

What does “hits different” mean? And why does gog give you “PTSD”?

2

u/L13on 1d ago

My first Monster Hunter was Freedom on the PSP, and then MH4U on the 3DS. Being able to play on a portable handheld is how I associate with the game. Being able to experience Wilds on a handheld, rather than being tied down to a desktop PC or console hits that spot for me.
Gog RNG grind for the perfect roll drove me close to insanity. And I might have to repeat that again on Switch 2 lmao

1

u/VacationOne5585 1d ago

Ohh right.yeah makes sense, I’ve only ever played them on handhelds.

3

u/NanoFromMC 5d ago

My only issue is whatever filter makes everything look so baked, but it's not a half bad experience. I've preordered it

1

u/Deep_Blue_Sea_444 5d ago

I'm doing the same thing with World, have like 150 hours & midway through iceborne all on the deck. Runs good & I think the graphics are great on the deck

1

u/zero043 5d ago

How long does the battery last?

3

u/meikaishi 5d ago

Given my experience with the demo I say around 2,5 hours with everything on and max brightness

1

u/AJ_Dali 5d ago edited 5d ago

I wonder if the performance modes make a difference. I'd guess putting priority performance and a 30fps cap gives the most battery.

Edit: the priority setting is in TV mode only, but I'd still think the framerate cap has an impact on battery life.

1

u/Motor_Economy_1741 5d ago

True. It’s much more immersive.

1

u/Kevroeques 5d ago edited 5d ago

I bought it after like 20 minutes of playing the demo, especially after seeing it was 30 bucks on eShop sale. One of the very few double dips I’ve ever done- playing on Steam Deck or ROG Xbox Ally was miserable and looked like deep fried sand even after all of the performance updates, and I need my portability in MH.

Also, tell me why installing Wilds on Steam has ballooned to 121.99gb- I was going to get a SD Express for my Switch 2 for wherever they sell for during Black Friday anyway, but I’d much rather use 40gb on my Switch 2 than 122gb on my Ally.

1

u/AdditionInteresting2 5d ago

Been playing on a handheld since the psp...I agree. There's nothing like sitting anywhere you like while still hunting. Handheld pcs just found a way into my life at the perfect time

1

u/roturix 5d ago

Portable Monster Hunter is my favourite Monster Hunter

1

u/rubenthezx 5d ago

Okay but how does it handle the faster gameplay weapons and monsters..

1

u/VegetableSmile3616 5d ago

But it's not 60 fps and no cross save.... I'm not playing all that again.

1

u/WileyCyrus 5d ago

For me Monster Hunter is a portable experience. I love getting together in the same room and playing with friends.

1

u/hansieboy10 5d ago

I played worlds a bit on PC and I always felt Monster hunter looks a bit blurry inherently.

Downloaded WIlds on the my switch a few days ago. Yes, I initially laughed a bit the graphics quality but I got used to it fast and man it feels so smooth and nice with the joycon vibrations. Way more ejoyable than my time on PC.

1

u/LegendRedux2 5d ago

mh tri on the wii looks better

1

u/Illustrious-Limit473 5d ago

-chickensoup

-is fighting a chicken

1

u/_Tim__tam_ 4d ago

if they can improve the visuals on handheld a bit then i'll defo be getting it on switch 2

1

u/JeannieLove13 3d ago

For sure. But I'm still debating Switch 2 vs my pc handheld. I need to mess around more on the Steam demo.

1

u/cybershiba 3d ago

Played from release on my rog ally and then rog ally x, worth every cent

1

u/zolga0 3d ago

Does it mate

1

u/castleengineers 1d ago

For me, I felt like MH has always been a handheld game, and I LOVE that they’re bringing it to the switch. Can’t wait!

1

u/Fi3ndKr4k3n 1d ago

Capcom need to sit down with Cd projekt red and pay good money to share the magic of optimization they are on another level

1

u/neosixth 5d ago

I have been playing wilds on my phone since release. Using gfn and it's been a blast lol.

0

u/Rough_Durian8602 5d ago

Is it 60 handheld?

1

u/L13on 5d ago

There is a locked 30fps mode, and an unlocked mode where the fps is usually around 40-55fps

2

u/SenpaiSwanky 5d ago

Naw, but there are locked 30 FPS and uncapped 40-55 FPS settings that are holding so far in the demo. Generally demos are older versions and we may see changes to performance between now and release.

Handheld also benefits from VRR, it doesn’t “feel” like 30. I’ve been playing uncapped no issues. Of course it is early game, but I play on PS5 Pro and the only FPS issues I have had since release were all in Windward Plains. No such problems here that I noticed.

2

u/Capt_Viewtiful98 5d ago

In a recent Digital Foundry video they said that VRR isn’t even working in handheld mode

1

u/Orpheeus 5d ago

No lol.

As someone with both a pretty decent desktop PC and a Steam Deck, I've actually come to find that 30fps isn't all that bad on a handheld. I think this, along with modern upscalers allows the Switch 2 especially to punch above its weight.

Also, the screen on that system also has VRR, so you can unlock the framerate and it feels a bit smoother doing that as well.

I could also see them integrating fake frames via Frame Generation like they've done with Dragons Dogma on Switch 2, but I've always found Frame Generation to feel pretty bad with the input delay it adds.

-1

u/Spite-ninja 5d ago

I'm a nintendo gamer. I only feel at home on a nintendo. I had a feeling that, despite youtube analysts saying the system couldnt run it, it would come to switch 2. I was right. Ready to do it all over again, probably gonna sell the ps5

0

u/L13on 5d ago

Hell yeah. I was a believer too that it'd come to Switch 2 and here we are today!
Its honestly magical that it runs on just 10 watts of power in handheld mode. For comparison, PC handhelds would be drawing 2-3x that power requirement.

2

u/Spite-ninja 5d ago

This system is everything I ever wanted as a devoted 3ds lover last decade. Its just win after win for me, just cleared dd2 all over again

-2

u/Voxsen 5d ago

Game looks absolutely terrible docked. Like its being AI upscaled from 240p or something. There’s a point where it begans to detract from the actual experience whether you care about how it looks or not. Props to them for porting it at all I guess.

-1

u/JuggerKnot86 5d ago

Dude it's on a haldheld, not a 27 inch monitor besides the fandom has seen (and Enjoyed) worse with the PSP ports and iPhone Freedom Unite era

-1

u/BennyWhatever 5d ago

This looks exactly like my PC experience on a Ryzen 5600 and GTX 1660. Game just kinda looks bad.

0

u/Entire_Paramedic_389 5d ago

its upscaled from 648p

-3

u/jeffcolv 5d ago

I think it looks bad but I don’t think it looks as bad as you’re saying. Definitely looks like an older gen game but it plays so well and nothing is difficult to identify

-4

u/Voxsen 5d ago

It looks considerably worse than MHGU, a game that was ported from the 3DS. You don’t have to accuse me of lying, just load them both up on your switch and compare them.

1

u/jeffcolv 5d ago

I never said anything about how it looks in comparison to MHGU or called you a liar

-1

u/Snoo_58305 5d ago

The frame rate looks awful

1

u/L13on 5d ago

Dunno man. Feels great and I’m havin a blast. Digital Foundry just posted their technical review of it, check it out

1

u/throwawayaidisney 5d ago

It’s 40-50fps with uncapped frame rate, option to lock to 30

0

u/VulcanCawk 5d ago

Just joined? lol

-5

u/barbietattoo 5d ago

Wow, chicken soup is so incredibly apt. They were very bold deciding to make the introduction zones about as colorful as a Lu Ann Platter from Lubys cafeteria.
