Other A reason not to choose McMaster

I am a fourth year McMaster student and I am going to give a really big reason to not go to McMaster if you are struggling to choose which uni to go to.

The main reason not to go to McMaster (as a commuter) is the parking situation.

The parking is genuinely so bad that if I knew about it, I might not have come here. As a commuter you have to park in Lot M. If you take a look at any map of the uni you’ll see that the lot is about a 20 min walk from main campus, which isn’t too bad itself, but it’s also up an incredibly steep hill for the first 10 minutes (like go and try and walk it before hand in the summer to see if it’s bearable).

Yes, there is a bus that comes to pick you up and take you to the main campus, but there’s only about 2-3 busses that run and it takes about 15 mins MINIMUM for them to get to you unless you’re lucky. There is also only one accessible bus that runs and it goes to more stops than the regular busses, which is good for getting to more specific places on campus, but bad because it takes twice as long to run.

The parking has also gotten WORSE recently. The parking used to have a transponder that opened a gate for you to get in (these sucked because they often broke), but now they just got rid of them for a QR code meaning anyone (even without a parking permit) can get in. I also don’t think they have enough staff to properly ticket people parking there unlawfully, meaning I just spent 20 minutes driving around trying to find a spot - it has never been this bad before). And if you’ve been to the lot you know that there has usually been at least some space in the worst part of the lot and you can be out of there in about 5 minutes, but now, I ended up leaving and there were still about 20 people trying to find a spot.

Just a reminder, you are PAYING a semester/yearly rate for this idiocy.

The only pro is that after 4pm, lot M holders can use certain other lots without charge.

I am not sure if the volume of people will go down sufficiently enough for me to pay for the next semester of parking. I hope it does, but I am not so confident about it just based on my previous 3 years of experience with the lot and it never being THIS horribly congested before.

If you still want to go to McMaster and need to commute, it is possible; I suggest parking on a residential street near McMaster (they are often free to park on and not super crowded), and then walk/bus the rest of the way to campus. This post is mainly just saying that the parking is terrible and getting worse recently so definitely take it into consideration (because I wouldn’t pay for it at this point).

And if you don’t/won’t be commuting, don’t bother listening to this either ;)

Got diagnosed with stage 2 Hodgkin’s lymphoma in December and had my first chemotherapy session on December 22nd. As of today I have completed all 12 of my sessions and am now officially in remission. Thank you to all McMaster faculty for being so understanding, and I hope to see you guys on campus soon :).

Other people be lying. (a pretty long chat with mcmaster hypeman)

hello my marauder friends. mac hypeman here. i have noticed a worrying pattern in the DMs i have been getting. a lot of students (ESPECIALLY first years) are comparing themselves to "everyone else" who gets straight 12s, is part of every club, has a great internship/co-op/job, etc etc. there's something VERY important I need you to know:

in most cases, these people do NOT exist!!

not *everyone* is getting straight 12s. not everyone has the fanciest co-op, not everyone is breezing through classes. people lie! people exaggerate! COMPARISON TO THESE IMAGINARY PEOPLE HURTS YOUR MENTAL WELLBEING!!!

some anecdotes from my life:

  • i know a person who puts their 4.00 GPA on their resume, linkedin, etc etc. i also know for a fact that this person does not have even close to a 4.00 GPA in reality.
  • people exaggerate ALL THE TIME!! i can't count how many times i've heard people calling courses "easy 12s" on here, when the course in question has an average of 60-70%
  • people naturally talk about their achievements more than their failures. the people you talk to in your classes will be quick to tell you about all the 12s they've gotten in courses, but you bet almost NO ONE is going to casually bring up how they barely scraped by with a 51%
  • hypeman is a TA. hypeman gets access to the grade distributions of a handful of courses across faculties. they are, overwhelmingly, in the 7-10 range. hypeman has also watched students straight up lie about their grades to others 😐

kiddos, there is NO SHAME in doing poorly in a class, feeling lonely, not getting accepted into clubs, etc. these are experiences SO MANY of your fellow students are having too, but just like you, they might feel too embarrassed to admit it. take people's claims with a grain of salt and remember that YOU are your only competition.

TLDR: most people are not getting crazy grades/opportunities. whether intentional or not, people often lie about how well they're doing, and it is actively hurting a lot of people's mental health.

as always mac hypeman is here if you need some hype or support 🫂 good luck with exam season!!

Other to ALL Mac health sci graders and admission team

before u guys flame me in the comments - I’m not coping lmao. i got into st Andrew’s school of medicine and accepted my offer even before mhs came out. im good thanks

the class of 2030 is rhe most GEEKED ass people. more than 60% of those accepted did private school, or had heavily inflated marks. the supp apps were written by ai and were mid asfff. to anyone on the admission team that wants to talk ab “hand selected” and “amazing applicants” y’all are liars and genuinely speaking out of your ass. do u genuine,y think a 3rd or 4th yr who’s broke and worried about their own future give a flying shit abt a 150 word essay? js be honest that there’s a hamster that pulls out random names and call it a day.

the marketing mhs has is absolutely insane and some didn’t even apply because they wanted to go to med school, it was simple bc of the prestige. getting a gpa handed to you on a silver platter isn’t everything to get into med school. The stats “60% of mhs grads get into med school” is also a LIE considering McMaster 100% has spots saved for mhs grads in their med school to keep up this false narrative. this wannabe Ivey league mindset w holistic questions genuinely won’t work for long bc eventually the people they accept will js get dumber and dumber and won’t even get medical opportunities. this program is so fraudulent and i hate seeing genuinely hard working students be so upset over a rejection from a program where the admission team and graders genuinely don’t care about them at all.

honestly good for you if your a mhs graduate or ur in the program whos been accepted into med school. the upcoming years will be nothing like you even if Mac pushes this prestigious propaganda up every highschoolers face

edit bc some of y’all gen r on smthn: i got into Mac health sci and only applied bc my parents wanted me to!!! hopefully that calms down some of u

I know this subreddit has seen a million mental health rants but my next therapy appointment is in a few weeks and i have nobody else to talk to so here we are. I'm in my 3rd year and honestly I dont think I can do this anymore. I have no life outside of school cause I have one close friend who doesn't even go to mac and I can't rely on my gpa anymore cause I've been fucking things up all year. I have no job and my parents pay for everything for me so I can't even drop out and pay them back because where the hell am I getting over 35k from. I'm tired and so fucking over everything but I can't do anything about it so I'm just stuck in an endless loop of losing my mind right when I think I'm getting better and at this rate I won't even be able to finish this semester. I don't even know if I'm writing this post cause I need advice or someone to tell me to suck it up or what but I'm sick of keeping all this shit in my head

Other Why Did I Catch 2 People Having Sex In The Washroom?

Geniunely wtf I was at Mac yesterday and I'm guessing since campus was pretty empty these people didn't think someone would walk in on them.

It was one of those one use only washrooms and I thought no one was in there since the door was unlocked. I walked in and saw a girl giving a blowjob to a guy.

For some fucking reason, these asshats had the nerve to be pissed AT ME even though they were too dumb to lock the fucking door.

to add on the washroom smelled absolutely rancid I don't know how 2 people can produce a smell that foul

def made my experience here fucking weird

Other Please hold your door ladies

Hey this is a post mostly directed at the ladies. i always wanna stress the importance of the fact this is coming from a nice place (not hate) but If u are walking behind me and i open the door push the door open with ur hand for urself i cant hold the door open for you while u dont even attempt to. I am a woman myself and im not your boyfriend or your girlfriend so open your own damn door😭 ill hold it open for you but at least try to help. Feel like this is constantly happening just with women and i don’t want to slam the door on anyone or ruin anyones day by doing so, so just wanted to make a post so u ladies can be more mindful of this.

Or atleast say thankyou😭

Edit: this post is not the place to be spreading hate on women in the comments

Its shocking you guys are downvoting this cause i asked other women to help hold the door LOL

Other truth and reconciliation day

today is important in building a brighter future while acknowledging the harm of the past. it’s not just a free day of no classes. it’s a day to honour, reflect and learn. it is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to educate your self and learn. whether you have lived in canada your whole life, or are new here you have a inevitable responsibility to honour the land and the people the were here before you. do not rely on your Indigenous friends and community members to educated your self. tap into readings, podcasts, documentaries etc to hear the truth of Indigenous people. Learn how you can actively resist colonial agendas. learn what you can do with your allyship. Take an Indigenous studies course as en elective. you are not doing enough by simply wearing orange, although that is honouring the truth of residential school survivors, we must do more. We must actively resist harm and fight for freedom, liberation and justice. Miigwech.

Other So like what do I do if my parents mandate that I come back home every weekend

Incoming first year here. I'll be living on campus, but my parents want me to come back home every weekend. A few classmates from my high school are also going to Mac and none of their parents demand they come back every weekend. I've told my parents I want to use Saturday and Sunday to study, but also to hang out with friends if I make some, and also maybe go to parties if I'm invited. But nothing seems to convince them.

Anyways my parents are literally threatening to not pay a single penny of my tuition or rez if I don't come back every weekend (they'll pay for most of my tuition + year 1 rez, while I'll pay the remainder of my tuition + rent for years 2-4 through OSAP, work, etc.). That threat is kind of freaking me out and giving me anxiety, given that if they cut off funding I probably won't qualify for more OSAP, and I barely have any in savings.

Anyways I hope I'm not sounding entitled or bratty but any advice

Other Maroon - An easy way to track macros on campus

Hey everybody! I developed an app that helps first year students track their macros while eating on campus food, I found it extremely difficult to find out what was in my food even with the spreadsheet provided by the university and I built this app for myself but thought that a lot of you might find it super useful as well. Its not perfect just yet so if find any issues there's a "report a problem" button which will submit a complaint directly to my email. Enjoy!

Other I just want friends.

Hi, I'm a 2nd year math student and I quite literally have nobody to talk to other then brief interactions in class every so often. I literally tried everything, talking to people in class, going to clubs, whatnot, and it literally feels like every single one of those people has their own close friends to choose, so why the hell would they choose me or include me in anything?

In other words, when I try and like initiate something with anyone, they're obviously like friendly for the first 2 minutes of talking, and I never hear from them again. Even when we share class, if they remember me, all I get are just shallow in-class interactions. I study hard to understand the class material and help others, they only come to me if their stuck on a problem.

I used to have 1 (just 1) close friend in first year but he just seemed to completely forget about me as he apparently "doesn't have time or energy to contact me" because of his job. Which I'm hesitant to believe unless he got deployed onto a space station or war zone or is miles under the ocean for a saturation dive (his field of study is as far from this as imaginable) and he can't contact me. (not true because i see him liking reels while ignoring my messages). He did say he was an introvert and talking to people was really energy intensive for him, so there might be some truth to his claims? Anyways if he keeps treating me like this I'm not too sure if this will work out.

I just want someone who will pick me as their first choice. I want someone who I can share all sorts of stuff with outside of just class. I feel like I'm going more and more insane every day why does it have to be so hard can someone just be my friend please
