Election Time! In-Person Absentee Voting begins Tuesday Oct 20!
In-Person Absentee Voting (aka early voting) begins Tuesday October 20 through October 31 for the Nov. 3 election.
Anyone who is legally eligible to vote can do so at their city's locations (ie. if you live in Madison, you can vote at the Madison locations, but if you live in Monona, you can only vote at the Monona locations). You'll need to bring an approved form of ID with you to vote. Here's a list of approved IDs. One that tends to trip people up is that out of state driver's license are NOT an approved ID. If you've moved here and haven't gotten around to changing you driver's license, check the approved list linked above for what other options you have (like a passport) or get to it and get that driver's license changed.
Not registered? Not a problem! You can register to vote at the time of voting, even early voting. Here's a page that talks about the requirements for registering to vote. There is a link on that page to the registration form that you can fill out online, print and bring with you, but if you don't have a printer, no problem, you can just fill out the form at the voting locations. Along with voter ID, you'll also need a proof of residence. Here's a list of options for proof of address. For many of those options, you may be able to pull them up on your phone to show them when registering. Having worked elections for over 15 yrs, I'd say having to register while voting adds from 5-10 min to the process.
Myvote.wi.gov is going to be your go to site for your voter information. You can preview what your ballot will look like, confirm if you are already registered, find your voting location if you want to wait until election day to vote, and track your ballot. For those outside of Madison, at the top of the Myvote site, click on "Vote Absentee In Person", enter your address, and your local locations and times will be provided.
Voter Guides:
This post is for voting information, not for debating. Any such comments on this post will be removed. However, if you have questions about the voting process, feel free to ask. Myself and many users of this subreddit have worked as election officials and are very familiar with the voting process.

Sharing this handsome fella.
He’s starting to get a bit thin at the top but he glows like he’s made of fire.

Multiple gunshots on the east side of Lake Monona at 6:00 this morning?
I'm laying in bed with the window open at my house off of Buckeye between the lake and 51 and I hear a couple sirens, then a series of loud bangs, maybe eight of them. Not sure but it sounded like gunfire. Then two more at 6:10. Not necessarily the crisp pop of a handgun, more explosive like a shotgun. Weird.

Favorite tree in full bloom
On the west side. Last year, it was so vibrant that I saw a couple families stop by on the weekend to take family photos with it as a backdrop. 🙂 It's still beautiful this year, but maybe last weekend was it's peak.

Announcement Google AI is Wrong About Voting
I was checking the early voting hours for my local city hall. Google seems to think there isn’t early voting which is ridiculous because I just voted there…
Remember to confirm all you find on the internet concerning the election, including when and where you can vote.
Edit: Apparently, I need to add some info since I’m getting so much hate for talking about ai. I’m a masters educated public school teacher. I know how to conduct academic research and teach this skill constantly. When I started my search for early voting hours at my local municipal hall, I thought a basic google search should have been sufficient. As many of you know, Google has plopped an ai summary at the top of all searches. Hoping it might save me a click for something as basic as hours of operation, I scanned it; knowing to take the results with a grain of salt and shot of tequila. I knew it was wrong immediately and decided to share that info here since it involved your right to vote and as yet another sign not to trust ai for those less skilled in knowing when further research is required. Didn’t expect a PSA to get so much attention and hate.

Sun Prairie has my absolute favorite tree
Found this beut while I was riding around a couple years ago. The contrast of the colors was amazing and I figured even if it's not Madison, people might appreciate it... :D

Beltline confusion
As someone relatively new to the Madison area, can someone please explain why the westbound Beltline exit for Dodgeville/Midvale Road is ALWAYS backed up? 😂 It doesn’t seem to matter what time of day it is, there’s almost always a line of cars waiting to exit. Is there a reason for this, or is it just one of those Madison traffic mysteries I need to learn to accept? 🤣

Recognize this cat? (Reston Heights/Glacier Valley)
This cat has been hanging out around Glacier Valley apartments for over a year now. I’ve assumed it may be an indoor/outdoor cat from somewhere nearby, but it’s still worth putting its picture out there!
Last summer, this friend was incredibly shy and cautious. Some new residents have been leaving food out for this cat, and today it was incredibly affectionate and seeking attention.

Stolen Bike Update
Hi all,
It’s me again with an update about my bike. It was spotted at the Whole Foods in Hilldale but we just missed the bike and person who took it. The suspect has a white hat on, has black gloves on, is wearing a black and white bomber jacket, appears to be white, is about 5’9”, skinny, is wearing black jeans, and white shoes. I do have a photo of him but don’t want to break Reddit’s guidelines.
Please if you see him contact me and/or call the Madison Police. MPD did come to the scene and is searching for him as well. The suspect has a knife so please don’t approach him.
Also, huge thank you to the Reddit user who let me know it was at Whole Foods! Without your message we wouldn’t have been able to find all this out.
Thank you.

Change of career in your 40s, 50s and beyond?
Have any of my Dane County neighbors made a career change, vastly different than what you’ve done for most of your career? Why did you make the change? Any advice you would give for those wanting to make the switch and delve into something new? I’m a professional with an advanced degree working in healthcare and want something different, currently my mind is set on IT (not sure what area, exactly) and hope it’s not too late!

Data Center Regulation
Glad to see Madison residents show up for this meeting! With all the controversy on data centers & AI, are there any thoughts from folks who attended the meeting on the proposed drafts? Did you feel heard by the folks presenting and that your questions & concerns were addressed?

Pop.up Brewers shop in Verona
Posting this Tuesday morning - there is a pop up shop at the corner of Main and Verona Ave. They have hats, shirts, flags, etc. He says the gas station owner here let them set up. He says they'll have World Series stuff tomorrow or Thursday if they win tonight here.
He said they has been somewhere in Madison but had some issue so they moved here. Anyway just posting in case anyone looking for cheaper stuff. No affiliation, just saw him setting up on my way to work.

Any former federal employees who moved to state employment?
This seemed like a good place to ask this question as it's Madison.
I'm currently in the interview process for a position at the state. The opportunity and team seem fantastic.
I have 10 years of service as a federal worker. Feeling beat down. Been through a lot the last 2 years.
Have other feds in the area moved to state employment? How was that transition? What do you miss? Do you regret it?

Batting cages for old amateur?
I played baseball as a kid in my community's youth league. Now I'm in my 40s and I have a random desire to take some swings. I wasn't that good as a kid and will probably suck, but I'd like to try.
What is a batting cage facility in the Madison area you would recommend? Somewhere I won't feel too uncomfortable or embarrassed taking a few bad swings at very slow balls. I don't want any help or looky loos, just somewhere to go by myself and give it a shot.

Extreme Auto Detailing LLC
Just wanted to warn folks to be wary of these folks. I went with these folks based on Google Reviews: first mistake.
Pickup occurred blind because every single email they sent to me was flagged as spam.
I would describe the experience as top-tier pricing for mid results. I was called a dick for saying that.
They went with “my photos don’t show what you’re seeing” and decided to gaslight me about the two dirt spots that were on car that they failed to remove after 300 bucks plus of exterior detailing.
There are a lot of detail shops in town. And since they clearly manipulate reviews (they blocked mine from publishing), I thought I’d use the sub to warn off others from using Extreme Auto Detail.
As always, YMMV.

stolen bike
gallerySomeone took my bike. If anyone sees a blue Centurion bike for sale or somewhere around town, it would be awesome if you could let me know. It had a kryptonite lock on it but that's probably gone. Doesn't have the drink holder anymore.

Can we get a single thread going for today (10/27) to post any official or unofficial watch parties that are going on in Madison. I have only heard of Working Draft with an official watch party (https://www.workingdraftbeer.com/events/2026/10/27/game-four-of-the-fall-classic-go-crew) what else is going on tonight?
