Discussion Design Engineer student looking into problems with MTB bikes for redesign ideas.

• Upvotes

Hello

I am currently a Design Engineer student going into my 3rd year and have been tasked with looking into redesign ideas and currently trying to brainstorm ideas to come up with.

Is there any products or specific parts of bikes that could be improved on a universal level, I'm currently looking into a bike frame with external opening ports for brake fluid lines ensuring maintenance easier but unsure if its sufficient enough to base a project on. Any ideas on what specifically could benefit this idea, or alternatively completely new ideas that would be better.

I've linked a Google form below, if anyone could make the time to fill it out it would be massively appreciated https://forms.gle/SSWcDADyfbPRkXQ5A

If not any ideas you do have could be put in the feed of this chat that would also be a huge help.

Thank you :)

Discussion Looped out a manual & snapped my ankle (feet stuck to flats).

Hey guys. I'm a relatively novice rider and recently started pushing to hold my manuals longer. I had a bad habit of panic-grabbing the rear brake, so I decided to try one without covering the brake on a slight asphalt downhill, going pretty slow (maybe 5-10 km/h).
I was super fatigued and had massive brain lag. I leaned back, blew right past the balance point, and looped out. Since my finger was off the brake, the front end stayed up, and my brain just forgot to bail.
Instead of stepping off, my Shimano GF400 shoes stayed glued to my XT flat pedals. The bike washed out hard to the right, taking my planted right foot with it. Heard a loud SNAP and my ankle just twisted completely out of place.
I was stuck on the ground. A bystander tried to help me up but accidentally moved my broken ankle in the process (ouch). Got an ambulance straight to the hospital.
Just had surgery and got plates installed. Doc says if I nail my PT, I'll be 100% after the hardware comes out next year. Lying in bed has given me too much time to think, so I’d love some input from this community:
1. Anyone had this exact crash? (Rotational ankle break because your foot wouldn't unglue from flats). How was your physical and mental return to riding?
2. Ankle armor: For when I return, any specific braces (like Space Brace) or stiff high-top shoes you swear by to prevent twisting?
3. Overall protection: This was a huge wake-up call. What's your go-to, top-tier armor for knees/shins, chest/back, and elbows?
Thanks guys. Ride safe.

Discussion Which Off-Bike Strength Exercise Has Actually Helped Your MTB Riding?

I'm curious about the strength work that makes a noticeable difference on the bike, rather than just making the gym numbers go up.

Single-leg work, hip hinges, core training, grip strength — all of them seem useful on paper, but I'd love to hear what riders have actually noticed on steep climbs, technical descents, or longer days on the trail.

For those with a home gym, what exercises do you keep in your routine?

And is there anything you tried that looked useful but didn't really carry over to riding?

Discussion Mondraker Anark

General thoughts and opinions on mondraker bikes? Their durability/warranty? I’m looking at the anark and would put a dual crown on it and have it replace my current DH bike as a more nimble park bike. I’m also curious if anyone knows whether the zendit or summum rear triangle is compatible, it would be sick to hook up the summum adjustable dropouts.

Discussion Learning bar turn but became dead sailor?

I'm practicing bar turn for the first time and I just can not pull the bar back after the turn, resulting in a pretty standard dead sailor and almost crush. I though I am pretty comfortable on the air before this. Anyone have any advise on how to practice it properly?

Also I noticed my brain and my body are fighting against each other, like I want to do a left bar turn before jump, but in actual I got a right bar turn somehow.

Discussion Is the marzocchi super Z same as the bomber Z with 38mm stanchions?

I was thinking about buying a Marzocchi super z but then I saw there was a bomber z with 38mm stanchions, could I just buy bomber z and switch the super z 190mm air spring inside that fork?

Brakes New brakes

Hi there

I’ve been using Shimano xt brakes for 5 years now . And I like them .

The power is nice , easy to service and adjust , power is excellent .

BUT I want to try something new because rhe only gripe I have with these , the bite point . There are 3 settings off.

Nothing , a tiny bit and full on anchor .

For my new brakes I want gradually modulation . And I don’t mess around with dot, and it shouldn’t be crazy expensive .

Any suggestions ?

Video Race line comparison from GoPro footage

I’ve been working on a side project to generate race lines and calculate time gaps from POV footage. Right now it’s some extra information for fans of the World Cup but I think it could be useful for amateur racers.

I currently use this with my GoPro practice runs to figure out which line is fastest for downhill events and help visualize and lock in my line the night before enduro.

Discussion How do you handle your dog during 3–4 hour MTB rides on road trips?

F-150 truck camper here. My 70 lb black lab rides trails with me but taps out around 5 miles, and my rides run 3–4 hours. Truck and motels don't work for leaving him that long. Thinking about a small trailer (~$20k budget) as a safe, ventilated home base for him while I ride. What works?

Brakes Brake pad recommendations

Looking for brake pad recommendations for SRAM Code Ultimate brakes. I’ve been using the green Galfer pads and they are great, but I just eat through them. I realize I’m asking to have my cake and eat it too, but is there anything out there with close to the same stopping power but longer lasting? I’m a heavy rider at 200#, so I’m prepared to accept that this is just my lot in life.

Discussion Lula Lake 5 Points 50

Just wanted to give some major credit to this race and its organizers! Was a fantastic event - super fun course, well marked, great volunteers and aid stations, camping in the gorgeous Lula Lake Land Trust, absolutely delicious free food all weekend, and free beer post race. Was a great family friendly environment. I really can’t say enough good things. It was hard AF but I think that’s on me 🙃

At Knoxville, TN Urban wilderness bike park, I was going down one of the blue flow lines. Sucked a bug into my mouth and it just went down the pipe. (Turn 6 in the vid).

FYI. They are doing their Fall Fest celebration November 6 and 7. Should be lots of cool MTB stuff.

Anybody wear anything like these on rough trails? I got a hip-bruise the size of a toy poodle the other day and this has some appeal to me...

WhichBike When you rent a bike abroad, how do you get the riding position right?

I'm an amateur triathlete exploring an idea, and I’d like to hear from people who travel for cycling holidays, training camps or races.

When you rent a road, gravel or mountain bike, how do you get it set up to feel comfortable and familiar? Do you send measurements beforehand, bring a bike-fit report, adjust things at pickup, or just ride whatever the shop provides?

The idea I’m exploring is a free “bike fit passport.” You’d create it using guided photos of your current bike, a few details about its components, and the manufacturer’s geometry information to help work out your existing setup. If you already have a professional bike-fit report, that could also provide the starting measurements.

You could then share the passport when booking a rental. It would translate your usual riding position into setup instructions for the specific bike you’re renting—even a different brand, model or frame size—so the shop knows what to adjust before you arrive and where the rental bike’s limits might prevent a close match.

A few things I’d love to understand:

  • Thinking about your last rental: how did you handle the setup, and how did it feel on longer rides?
  • Has uncertainty about fit ever made you bring your own bike instead—or skip renting altogether?
  • What do you already use to record and share your setup, if anything?
  • Would you use something like this for a future trip? What would you need to trust it?

Please mention what kind of riding you do and roughly how often you rent. Experiences where everything worked perfectly are useful too!

WhichBike Maxx Jinxx experiences?

I'm looking at buying a new All Mountain bike for tall people and got hopelessly caught up in the process. Now I suddenly run into a German manufacturer called Maxx. It seems to be exactly what I'm looking for and highly customizable but I can not, however find any reviews and apparently not a word on Reddit about the brand or the Jinxx in particular. Does anybody have any direct or indirect experiences with the brand or even the type?

I'm looking at a non-XC because of the forward position and my back not willing to comply anymore. Low reach and stack have always plagued me on any bike for that matter. I love the lightness of XC's but I might not have that much of a problem with the 2 kg extra compared to my former Merida OneTwenty considering weighing over 90 kg.

Discussion CE2 Body Armour

Picked up my new to me DH bike on the weekend, already loving it and already getting into way sketchier sections than before.

Thinking it might be time to upgrade my armour to CE2, strongly prefer jacket style. 110-115kg and 183cm. Needs to be somewhat breathable but that's not the priority. Rib/kidney protection would be nice but not critical. Shoulder protection is.

Looking at Leatt 3DF Airfit Evo vs POC Oseus VPD vs TLD Stage Ghost. I like the Alpinestars but can't get it easily in Australia.

Thoughts on the above? Current armour is Leatt, it's comfortable enough but I have POC helmets and now the TLD has grabbed my interest, it's also marginally cheaper.

Discussion Please review my send

So this was my first send (https://www.reddit.com/r/Hardtailgang/s/sDtrZinxzE) that I have posted. Since then, I have practiced (although not diligently, I admit) and have gotten myself a proper MTB (https://www.reddit.com/r/Hardtailgang/s/udEW2IBiE2), and this is my first attempt at anything technical with it.

I request all to please review the footage and offer advice/guidance. All responses are greatly appreciated 🫶🏻
