Minnesota Outdoor Bud Rot Watch — Wednesday, October 28: A drying break ahead for those still holding
For everyone already harvested and working through drying, trimming and curing—hope your season finished well.
For those with plants still outside, there’s some encouraging news: Thursday–Friday brings widespread sunshine, and weekend rain chances have eased. Today’s rain and fog still deserve attention, along with colder northern nights.
These scores describe current and peak forecast weather pressure through November 3. They’re estimates—not disease probabilities or percentages of crop lost.
| Region | Weather pressure | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| Brainerd / Crow Wing | 75 — High | Another ¼–½” of rain possible today. Mostly sunny Thursday–Friday, with Thursday gusts near 20 mph helping drying. Overnight lows 33–35°F allow localized frost. |
| Bemidji / Northwest | 60 — High | Light rain possible today, then mostly sunny Thursday–Friday. 30–31°F tonight through Friday night brings freeze risk. Moisture pressure should fall. |
| Duluth / Northeast | 80 — Severe | Rain today–tonight follows 0.47” Tuesday. Thursday sunshine and gusts near 25 mph help recovery. Inland lows around 32°F Thursday–Friday nights; lakeshore conditions differ. |
| St. Cloud / Central | 85 — Severe | Four consecutive measured rain days could become five today. Sunshine returns Thursday–Friday, although morning fog may delay drying. Lows near 37°F. |
| Twin Cities | 80 — Severe | Fog and thunderstorms today, followed by sunny Thursday and mostly sunny Friday. Morning fog remains possible. Representative lows around 42°F. |
| Marshall / Southwest | 85 — Severe | Five consecutive rain days could become six today. Mostly sunny Thursday offers relief; partly sunny Friday. Lowest forecast low around 38°F. |
| Mankato / South-central | 75 — High | Fog and thunderstorms today–tonight, then sunshine Thursday–Friday near 60°F. Morning fog may linger. Lowest forecast low around 40°F. |
| Rochester–Winona / Southeast | 65 — High | Some sun and wind today before tonight’s thunderstorms. Sunny Thursday and mostly sunny Friday offer a useful break. Rochester lows near 40°F; valley temperatures vary. |
The useful window: Thursday–Friday, October 29–30. Sunshine should reduce moisture pressure across the state. Overnight fog and dew can still leave sheltered plants damp, so a sunny forecast doesn’t guarantee every flower dries quickly.
Frost is a separate concern. Bemidji has the clearest freeze signal, followed by inland Duluth. Brainerd gardens and sheltered low spots could frost even with forecast air temperatures slightly above freezing.
Looking farther ahead, rain chances return early next week. NOAA favors wetter conditions November 2–6, followed by a drier outlook November 4–10.
