Nothing super crazy. This is on a Panasonic SV1, my primary laptop for school/coding. Yes, it’s crying a little bit, it’ll be okay tho (:

I’m totally new to everything but I really enjoyed messing around with this! I was largely inspired by a different popular rice that made rounds and was Evangelion themed. I built on that and made this my own thing, plus added a hyprland-esque activity transition desktop effect (custom). Forgot to show the dock/panel, sorry! It is hidden by default and shows on mouseover on the bottom of the screen.

For some reason this recording seems to lag and jump some of the aforementioned desktop effect. In real time it looks cooler ;<

I’m larping and lowkey not even into P3 that much, I just liked the wallpapers and character design. Also I heard blue psychologically makes you not want to kermit as much and I got depression so. Yeah. LOL

ANYWAYS hope yall enjoy this as much as I do. It makes my eyes very happy.

I am making the lightest [good looking] desktop environment for Linux, and I am so proud of making my dream project go true after 15 years of planning it. Now running on an old government issued laptop. (Ready to play TF2!)

Hey guys! Last month I've been building my dream desktop environment. I've been developing in Java and Rust doing boring things over 12 years, and I always wondered why cheap operative systems had to look like Windows 95.

I am running broke on my job and no company wants to take me so I am experimenting new things and building startups and these "dream" non-profit things I always wanted to make.

I built my open source free desktop environment for Linux with one simple purpose:

  • Revive, maintain and recycle old hardware without losing the UI/UX.

Why doing this?

  • Some people still use windows on these computers, yikes.
  • The linux alternatives are ugly, and the ones that are not, are heavy yikes.
  • I want to end the loop of "distro hopping to find the lightest one" and make the definitive.
  • I don't know, just passion for not throwing away working hardware? lol

If you want to give it a look:

[Hyprland] I kept ricing until it became a whole desktop

This started as a Quickshell bar and kept growing until it became a whole desktop. Everything you see is one setup: the bar with an island in the middle that turns into the launcher, the control center, the player and the
rest, plus a few apps of its own, an installer, and a phone link.

Pick one of 14 Catppuccin accents, or go light with Latte, and the shell, GTK and Qt apps, Firefox, VS Code, kitty, the icons and even the wallpaper follow it.

2 things I'm happy with:

- the phone shows up in the bar with its battery and notifications (KDE Connect's protocol, my own implementation)
- updates take a snapshot first, and if the system doesn't boot afterwards it rolls itself back

More screenshots, a 90-second video and an ISO you can install are on
https://vyntarisos.com . It's free and open source, and it's a alpha: if you try it and something breaks, or something looks off design-wise, tell me. That's half the reason I'm posting.

Ricing Advice

Had an old, unused PC decided to install arch and now im getting deeper and deeper into to rabbit hole. I am very new to linux so I am using noctalia shell, and I am wondering is quickshell worth learning to create even better rices for myself ? Noctalia is perfect and I love the ease of customisation - changing my bar to whatever I like, whenever I like which is about every 2 days, and I love how quick I can do it, so would I just be wasting my time learning quickshell or even waybar or is it now obsolete ?
