Hi all! Basically the title. Hopefully not too boring of a post!

I’m interested in learning about general history of knitting, I’d love a book but am open to papers, articles, etc. Thanks in advance 💗

Finished Object [FO] Finished my first steeked project!

I've just finished my first steeked project in time for the arrival of a new niece/nephew.

This is the strawberry garden baby blanket by Josh Henzler, completed in a mix of drops lima and karisma and some yarn local to me, Susan's family.

Project page: https://www.ravelry.com/projects/omeisl/strawberry-garden-baby-blanket

The pattern is ok. I found a few areas a little unclear, but the chart is lovely. Crochet edging is completed wrong side facing and that along with blocking made such a difference with the curling edges. The only part I'm quite disappointed about is the steek stitches where I caught the white yarn are a little obvious on the border.

I chose to duplicate stitch the strawberries, inspired by some other projects. I had originally thought to complete them with colourwork but I thought this project would be a good push to improve my duplicate stitch skills and was worried about tension issues with three stranded colourwork (another area of mine that needs some work!)

To do the steek I used the crocheted method with some light felting at the ends. I then roughly sewed the steek edge down, and a very good friend sewed a green velvet ribbon to hide the edge.

The blank section in the middle of the blanket is just waiting for new family member to be named! And I will then duplicate stitch an initial. I'm torn between red or green, so would love other thoughts please!

I made this Fortuna's wheel jumper when I first found out I was pregnant, and today my toddler got his own 🥰

I used the sverrigsgade pattern and transposed the charts myself, wasn't too tricky!

HIGHLY recommend using leftover yarn (or intentionally over-ordering) to make matching jumpers for your wee one ⭐

Finished Object My first sweater, featuring a custom crossword color chart!

Strangely enough, this is my first-ever sweater, even though I’ve been knitting since I was 12! I’ve been obsessed with putting custom colorwork charts on hats for the past 6 or so years and finally decided to try the same thing on a sweater. The yarn is Cascade Yarn’s 128 Superwash Merino Wool (color 518), and the pattern is petiteknit’s Louisiana sweater—which is knitted in the round, so I had to improvise to put a design on the chest. I ended up using long pieces of yarn and knitting fair isle just across the width of the motif. There were a lot of ends to weave in this way, but I don’t think you can see the extra weight after blocking! I’m really happy with how it came out, and it was a quick knit—only three weeks from start to end, thanks to the jumbo yarn weight used. Stay tuned to see if I’ve been bitten by the sweater bug now! :)

I was knitting my way along this morning and was just soooooo astounded by what a quick knit this is. I looked at it on my needles and thought that *obviously* I'll be wearing this very soon. Well! 😂🤷🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️

FYI, my last few wearables were bottom-up and this is my first time knitting top-down.

Finished Object Finished grandpa's requested hat

I am a live-in caregiver for my 95 year old grandfather. I often knit while I am sitting with him, and he has started asking me to knit specific things. This is my favorite, which I just finished today. He wanted me to knit it for my dad. My dad is thrilled.

Pattern was A Comical Hat by Cheryl Molnar. My grandpa liked the starting 2x2 rib so much he wanted me to just stick with that instead of the offset rib design.

The Block O is craft felt cut to shape and wrapped in scrap yarn, then sewn on while the hat was stretched out. He specifically wanted a handmade patch sewn on and I had no idea what I was doing so I got creative.

Yarn is AlohaBlu Hawaii in the colorway Red Gray White. This yarn is what started it all, he wanted me to stop my other projects to start with this yarn right away.

Edit: photos are of my dad!

Junko Okamoto’s HANA in Cascade 220

I had purchased this yarn last year to knit my boyfriend a sweater and tried a couple times to make him one but knew deep down the relationship wasn’t right and couldn’t bear to actually ever finish it. We broke up early September and i immediately cast this sweater on, it’s like a big warm hug and very imperfect, as you can see I ran out of the gray yarn on the last sleeve and the stitching is messy but I love it!

Tips and Tricks Finished sweater turned out perfect!! Except…

Thumbnail

I just finished the heart chain sweater by From Mayo (knitting for Olive heavy merino in cream) and am absolutely thrilled with how it turned out!!! I’ve been knitting for about 4 years and started making sweaters in March of this year. This is also my first cable knit sweater. I am so glad I finished this in time for sweater weather, and I plan to wear this for a trip to Europe this winter!

HOWEVER…I realized the knit on my shoulders looks a little…stretched? I am sure this is a tension-related issue. I have very loose tension, and to even come close to hitting gauge I have to size down my needles by 1mm and go a whole size down.

So, I am wondering if anyone has specific tips, or whether this sort of thing will just get better with experience! Any advice would be greatly appreciated 🥹

I was a bit ambitious after finishing my first knitted project, I decided to take on the Dot Top by p1zip (https://ravel.me/dottop) and I'm so glad I did! Definitely not without mistakes, but it's such a fun and rewarding project. The I-cord edge around the neck and armholes really took it to the next level, although I decided not to do it on the bottom edge since the fabric feels comfortable as is

Yarn used was Queen City Yarn Coleman in the shade Soot and Casasol Bambú in the shade Mostaza

Hi everyone, this is my first sweater! I learned to do colorwork, and steeks!

Pattern: The sheep sweater by Rosa Pomar.
Used local to me yarn from Mitchell Yarn Co. ( Ann Marie’s flock I believe ), undyed/natural 100 percent wool

I worked two extra rows of sheep so it would be extra long, you can see in the first and last pic. Second is freshly blocked

I made this for Rheinbeck, my mom and I matched :) it was my fist festival. Last pic :)

My Renanculus is done! I never thought I'd make one, but my LYS hosted a KAL and I joined mostly for the company. I kinda get the hype now - it's a beautiful sweater and was so fun to knit!

I used fingering weight merino held together with mohair, both by Majo

Rave (like a rant, but in a good way) What happened to me? I got bit by the knitting bug

I used to knit back in high school and I'm now 35 and found cheap yarn and needles at the thrift store so I decided to give it another go. I'm addicted! I can't put my knitting down xD What has happened to me?? I'm not even into knitted end products (I don't wear knitted sweaters, etc), I just have this urge to do another row...and another row... and another row... and before I know it it's 2AM and I'm a zombie the next day.

I'm currently making a plushie for my daughter and I'm very excited! Anyway! Just here to see if anyone experienced the same as a beginner 😄

Also, genuine question, do people often get muddled in their head with the knitting counts? Any tips to keep track of the number of rows and knits? I made a lot of mistakes and accidentally unraveled a couple of loops and I don't know how to fix it. I'm gonna find out!!

Discussion Suggestions for using a ton of tiny yarn balls?

Post image
18 Upvotes

Any suggestions on what to knit with around fifty 10g yarn balls? they are sport weight and each has 26m of yarn.... I bought it as a lot online but I didn't realise they were tiny little balls! There's around 1,300 meters so I could make a big something or a bunch of little somethings, but I have no idea what is a good thing to make with all these... None of them are the same color 🤣

Tips and Tricks How are we blocking things in tiny apartments with cats?

My cat wants to eat my gigantic knit winters pullover because it smells like a sheep

I have a tiny apartment and there are no spaces to keep both the gigantic sweater in (flat) and cat out

🆘

ETA there are no spaces to block off in a tiny apartment, that’s like The Whole Thing otherwise it wouldn’t be tiny lol

Doodle cards and scrap yarn for this.

I’d love to line this with a fleece or fabric so the inside threads don’t show while I’m wearing it. Has anyone done so — sewing on a lining?

About 5 months ago I made the questionable decision to knit a self-drafted, steeked, fairisle cardigan for my then 7-month-old.
I knew that I should aim to make it much too big, but wasn't sure how big. Well, I think I nailed it. 11 months old and room to grow!
I also gave myself grace when my life got crazy busy to convert to simple stockinette for the sleeves. I actually think this turned out looking pretty cute.
I think she will be able to wear it all winter (which is good, because it was a silly amount of work)!

2 weeks ago I decided after years of being too intimidated to try, that I would finally commit to learning to knit. I couldn’t get it with DIY videos so I decided to sign up for a knitting course and that helped it click for me. I’m someone who learns by asking questions, so having a person to talk to in real time helped a lot.

This is nothing crazy by any means, but the small progress I’ve made from swatch 1 to swatch 5 is exciting. :) I can’t wait to dive into socks and sweaters. No idea what yarn I used because it was gifted to me without wrapping.

I have the pattern for the S*phie Hood, but I heard that’s best as like a second project. Flat knitting in garter stitch does call to me….(I do still need to learn increases, decreases, and I-cord edging). I planned to do the Step by Step Sweater too. Have yet to learn to knit in the round, but I did buy sets of interchangeable circular needles, so it’s on my list.

Does anyone else have any beginner friendly patterns or projects they’d recommended? Any advice or tips in general for a newbie? I’d also gladly accept any feedback on my tension or technique. Thanks for having me and I’m stoked to be a part of this community!

Discussion Anyone here a member of The Knitting Guild Association?

Just came to say that anyone wanting to learn or those wanting to up there knitting game I recommend you join the Knitting Guild Association and sign up for a course or 2. They have a few immersion weekends for specific project types like socks and shawls as well as courses ranging from very basic knitting to master knitting with certifications if desired. They recently had a presentation on yarn and yarn literacy. Wow. Excellent presentation and I am now way more confident when subbing yarns. Best thing I ever did.

Rant I HATE PURLING IN THE FIRST ROW

I hate it. I hate it so much. I drop my cast on stitches so often when I purl in row 1. I hate it so much it’s really REALLY tempting to just crochet a chain of the right length and pull up loops from the chain because that would be so much more stable for me.

I already crochet to cast off, would crochet to cast on be so bad? Would it affect my tension? What if I used a hook that was about half a mm bigger than the needle I’m using?
