I went with a friend to a K1 Circuit. This is our 4th time, multiple races per session with their rentals.
This time my friend ended up crashing on a section they felt confident about since they’ve cleared it many times with no problem. They understand that crashes happen but they can’t help but keep reviewing the incident in their mind about how it happened since the section and the approach to section couldn’t have led them to a crash the way they did. My friend also comes from the world of racing on tracks and not new to racecraft. The crash led to damages to the kart. My friend is suspecting kart condition as a potential contributing culprit as the karts are not normally well maintained.
Having so many unknowing risky factors such varying as kart condition from kart to kart involving chassis, steering, rods, brakes, tire and such, without a detailed evaluation of the kart before or after you’re at a much higher safety risk than you anticipate especially if you’re a driver than tends to like to push the karts a bit to find faster lap times. Karts are also now electric motors so there is even more factors at play.
When you do crash there is no footage, there is no report. All they do is send the kart to a mechanics to evaluate on their own discretion on which parts you need to pay for. Additionally they seem to be more concerned about the damage payments than evaluating you for injuries as they don’t have a process to do so, but they are quick to rush you to the counter to pay for kart damages. There is no insurance waiver to be offered either. K1 doesn’t offer any sort of insurance policy as a waiver or even injury spot covered compared to other sports such as skiing or snowboarding.
Damages can add up quick and can really put hundreds on top of the races you might’ve purchased.
If you dive into their customer reviews there are a handful of accounts where many do feel poor kart conditions led them to their crash. Interestingly enough when you dive into the financial state of K1 Circuit they are currently in debt so in a sense it feels they are positioned to be incentivized to want to charge fees as traffic to their locations are not generating sizable profitable to offset. Hence the lack of a damage insurance option. To me this becomes a conflict of interest that should be kept in mind.
After this past session we’ve decided to refrain from returning to K1 Circuit unless we bring our own karts.
Decide for yourself. For us, the monetary and safety risk is simply too high.
