Weekly thread r/JRPG Weekly "What have you been playing, and what do you think of it?" Weekly thread

Please use this thread to discuss whatever you've been playing lately (old or new, any platform, AAA or indie). As usual, please don't just list the names of games as your entire post, make sure to elaborate with your thoughts on the games. Writing the names of the games in **bold** is nice, to make it easier for people skimming the thread to pick out the names.

Please also make sure to use spoiler tags if you're posting anything about a game's plot that might significantly hurt the experience of others that haven't played the game yet (no matter how old or new the game is).

Since this thread is likely to fill up quickly, consider sorting the comments by "new" (instead of "best" or "top") to see the newest posts.

For a subreddit devoted to this type of discussion during the rest of the week, please check out /r/WhatAreYouPlaying.

Weekly thread r/JRPG Weekly Free Talk, Quick Questions, Suggestion Request and Media Thread

There are four purposes to this r/JRPG weekly thread:

  • a way for users to freely chat on any and all JRPG-related topics.
  • users are also free to post any JRPG-related questions here. This gives them a chance to seek answers, especially if their questions do not merit a full thread by themselves.
  • to post any suggestion requests that you think wouldn't normally be worth starting a new post about or that don't fulfill the requirements of the rule (having at least 300 characters of written text or being too common).
  • to share any JRPG-related media not allowed as a post in the main page, including: unofficial videos, music (covers, remixes, OSTs, etc.), art, images/photos/edits, blogs, tweets, memes and any other media that doesn't merit its own thread.

Please also consider sorting the comments in this thread by "new" so that the newest comments are at the top, since those are most likely to still need answers.

Don't forget to check our subreddit wiki (where you can find some game recommendation lists), and make sure to follow all rules (be respectful, tag your spoilers, do not spam, etc).

Any questions, concerns, or suggestions may be sent via modmail. Thank you.

Discussion Guys Don't sleep on Crystal Project.

I saw a post a few days ago talking about some RPGs that are under the radar, and I bit on this game, I ended up staying up all night and playing it til 6am this morning. The battle and class system is robust, the platforming is so fun and clean, the rewards for exploration are high, and it seems like the put so much love into it. The story has been a little meh so far but im having a legit 9/10 experience right now and that usually doesn't happen with RPGs for me these days! Please give it a try!

Question One question: What was the first JRPG you played? I started with Pokémon when I was a kid on a Game Boy emulator.

And after that, it was just addiction, like Final Fantasy, Chrono Trigger, Xenogears, and even the fan games made in RPG Maker.

Question Near the end of Skies of Arcadia and I got this upgrade, did I forget to upgrade my defense or is it that big a jump?

Post image
188 Upvotes

I fought a mandatory enemy encounter and got the sparkling deck, I go to equip it and I realized it was a HUGE jump in defense. What I had on had me at 127 defense, what it gives is 572.

I'm curious if at some point I equipped early game armor by accident and sold all my good stuff, making things trickier than necessary or if this late game armor is just a huge stat boost.

I did this as a child playing Castlevania Circle of he moon where I didn't look at the numbers and just equipped what ever I thought red or blue might indicate. I realized later I played the whole game with starting equipment.

For Skies I didn't have much trouble either way, I thought it might be funny if the bosses were doing way more damage than they're supposed to!

Also if you've ever accidentally played a game like this feel free to share.

Recommendation request Recommendations for JRPGs w/o social sims (non-2D or 2.5D)

Currently playing Fortune's Weave and love the story and actual game play but HATE the social sim part.

What are your favorite non 2D or 2.5D JRPGs without social aspects? (I've already played most of the 2D/2.5D ones).

Prefer turn based, but I can do live combat if not too difficult.

PS5 or Switch 2 platform.

Recommendation request Recommendations for JRPG with good story?

• Upvotes

So many recommendations recently seems to suggest ignoring story. Like Crystal Project is great but the story is meh or Final Fantasy Resonance is great but the story is meh.

What are your recommendations for stories you don't consider 'meh'? Bias towards more recent releases please. Stuff on PS5 or Switch 2 perhaps?

Mod says I need more characters so... people love talking about the themes of Expedition 33, people sometimes reference the bombing mission in Final Fantasy 7 when talking about environmental issues. What games have story beats that you think will be worth talking about in the future?

Discussion Favorite RPGs about demon transformation

So lately an idea I was interested in exploring was that I wanted to see how often the premise of RPGs about power that comes at a steep price was used.

Yes I know that BOF Dragon Quarter used such a premise about how morphing into a dragon ends up draining Ryu the more he uses it, but I became interested in seeing that particular concept used more often in the genre where the player can turn into a demon with super powers such as high stats, but doing so will have damage to the unit if they use the ability too often.

Recommendation request Games like final fantasy 9?

I’m trying to find an RPG that has the same kind of magical, fairytale atmosphere as Final Fantasy IX. I love the grand fantasy kingdoms, the colorful fairytale art style, and the overall cozy world-building

The biggest thing for me is the main character I do not want an edgy, brooding hero. I want someone fun non-edgy, and upbeat (kind of like Zidane)

I don't really care about complex or super dark themes, and romance can be in it or not, doesn't matter to me. I just want a really solid fantasy adventure with that classic storybook feel

Platform: Any platform (PC, Mobile, Switch, Emulators)

Games I enjoyed: Final Fantasy IX, Chrono Trigger, grandia

Desired aspects: Turn-based or action combat, storybook high fantasy setting, non-brooding MC. romance (fine if it's not there, but even better if it is)

Discussion Does anyone here play games with lighter tone in autumn and/or winter?

I live in the Uk and weather in autumn can get you a bit moody. I’m currently playing my first Pokemon game (ultra moon) and LBX Little Battlers experience and have a whole bunch of other lighter JRPGs I have as a backup if I can’t get into these. I was wondering, does anyone else plays their games like this? I remember when I was in high school and I played the first monster hunter and final fantasy x during spring/summer and had one of the best experiences with playing games.

Release I'm making Spectrakin, a monster-taming RPG with town recruitment/upgrades, set in a forgotten land where civilisation mysteriously collapsed

Thumbnail

Hi! I'm the dev behind Spectrakin, a monster-taming RPG inspired by the GBA+DS Pokémon games and Digimon World. The core gameplay is centred around three key pillars:

  • Team-building: Catch, train, and build a team of unique Spectrakin, with growth systems that influence their strengths in and out of battle, as well as their evolution paths.
  • Adventure: Explore the diverse region of Eidolia, uncover the tragic history of the world, encounter strange elemental factions, and discover what lies beyond the boundary between worlds.
  • Town development: Meet humans and Spectrakin on your journey, help them with their troubles, and convince them to join your town to unlock new facilities and upgrades.

Story: Once a thriving civilisation, Eidolia was abandoned following a mysterious catastrophe that brought humanity's ambitions to an abrupt end. Now, generations later, people are slowly returning to its ruins, unaware of the secrets that still lie buried beneath them. As you explore in search of your missing brother, you'll piece together the events that led to Eidolia's downfall, and discover that the forces behind it may not be as distant as they seem.

Please consider following my Kickstarter page and hitting the "Notify me on launch" button if you're interested, it really helps me out! You can also wishlist on Steam.

Recommendation request Loving Ys VIII right now, but trying to choose my next game between Tales of Arise, Ys IX, or Ys X—is Arise's combat transition jarring? Spoiler

Hey everyone,

I'm currently playing through Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of DANA and I am absolutely loving it. The storytelling is beautiful and the seamless overworld combat is incredibly fun. However, my biggest gripe by far is the map system—I frequently find it incredibly complicated, frustrating, and easy to get lost in.

I'm looking ahead to my next purchase once I finish this game. I want to jump into a true action-JRPG masterpiece that has phenomenal mechanics, rewarding exploration, a forgiving but engaging difficulty level similar to Ys VIII, and a vastly superior, modern map/navigation system.

Right now, I've narrowed my top choices down to Tales of Arise, Ys IX: Monstrum Nox, or Ys X: Nordics, but I have a couple of specific dilemmas:

The Combat Transition: I know both Ys IX and Ys X keep the seamless style I love, while Tales of Arise warps you into an enclosed arena for battles. For those who love seamless overworld combat, did Arise's screen transitions feel jarring or break your exploration immersion?

The Map Quality: How do the maps in Ys IX, Ys X, and Tales of Arise stack up against Ys VIII? I've heard Ys X has much better modern navigation tools, but I've also heard Ys IX can feel a bit dull and grey in its exploration.

Aside from those three, I am completely open to other masterpiece recommendations! If there is another modern action-JRPG out there with amazing real-time combat, an adjustable or accessible difficulty level, a gripping story, and a clear, user-friendly map, please throw it my way. (Note: I strictly prefer real-time action, so please no turn-based or brutal souls-like recommendations).

Would love to get your honest, unbiased feedback to help me make my final choice. Thanks!

Newcomer & 1st post in this sub.

I've been following this subreddit for quite a while, reading everyone's posts.

Instead of asking which games to play or making recommendation post, I made my switch backlog after browsing & checking several posts past in this sub.

I've grouped them as much as possible based on franchise & series.

It took me 2 weeks to collect all of the game+update+dlc & installation.(may take lifelong to play)

17 Atelier, 17 FF, 13 Trails, 12 DQ games in one system is crazy.

Let me know if there are any games in the list that aren't JRPGs or if I've missed anything.

Discussion Sometimes it helps me relax to play PS1 Wild Arms

Uncomplicated, I maxed out the items, so I can go pretty much where I want (this negates the tedium associated with classic JRPGs' frequent random battles and difficulty scaling up). Home from new and intense (but rewarding) job, helped kiddos with homework and riding of bike, arranged dental appointments for said kiddos, made dinner and now... just 1.5 hours of blissful anime and pixel mid 1990's JRPG with a nice overworld and a story about prehistoric demons and their mother draining the land. Doesn't get much better for this middle aged dude. I mean, of course it could be better, but honestly, baseball season is over and my college football team sucks and it's my off week from the gym so yeah... pretty sweet way to relax for now.

Question Megaman X Command Mission?

Hey hey.

I only discovered the existence of this game today, and it goes for £8 at that.

The past 3 JRPGs ive played have been SMTV, Metaphor and currently playing through Persona 3 Reload. I need an Atlus break.

Is this game decent? It looks great, but a quick glance at review scores and it looks very mixed. So there must be some issues with it somewhere.

What do you guys think of it, and even as a Megaman noob, is it worth playing?

Recommendation request I just finished Star Ocean the second story R and absolutely loved it - is there any other similar game you'd recommend?

I've been long time fan of western cRPGs but fairly new to JRPGs - there are a few titles I absolutely fell in love with and would like to discover more.

I recently finished Star Ocean the second story R and had a blast - would love to find more titles like this one. Naturally, I was considering other Star Ocean titles but it seems like the common consensus is that SO2R is the best entry of the series and more recent entries are considered mediocre at the best. So, I'm hoping to find other titles that aren't SO but equally as enjoyable.

  • Desired platform: PC (Steam) and Switch 1
  • Desired aspects:
    • I want a game where I can play as a female protagonist.
    • I prefer real time combat over TB
    • Fantasy setting (Star Ocean was good because it is a mix of sci-fi and fantasy setting)
    • I love games with good companion interactions where you can build relationship with them, a decent romance is a huge plus but not a must requirement.
  • JRPGs I loved:
    • Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflection (loved combat - very good translation of MH mainline real time combat into TB combat, loved characters and enjoyed fashion hunting)
    • Rune Factory 4 Special (social interaction aspect was top notch)
    • Star Ocean the second story R (enjoyed combat and getting to know companions via PA)
  • JRPGs I liked:
    • Octopath Traveler 0 (but the story was too dark for me)
    • Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma (enjoyed social interaction aspect & village decoration)
  • JRPGs I had mixed feelings:
    • Granblue Fantasy: Relink (it was fun for about 10 hours but then got too repetitive)
    • Romancing Saga 2: Revenge of the Seven (I found the combat too tough even in lowest difficulty, especially the boss fights)
  • JRPGs I didn't enjoy:
    • Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter (protagonists rubbed me wrong way)
    • Rune Factory 5 (it felt quite... soul-less compared to RF4 and clunky as hell compared to Guardians of Azuma)
    • Fire Emblem: Three Houses (didn't like Byleth (she felt so... dead inside?) and didn't enjoy restrictive schedule of having to teach students and all)
    • Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin (some characters were really annoying and combat didn't feel like MH & too repetitive with Head to Head/Double Attack spam)
  • JRPGs in my wishlist (waiting for a sale): Octopath Traveler 2 & Harvestella

Discussion Boss Battle Theme

What is the coolest or most beautiful boss battle music you’ve ever heard? Preferably from a JRPG.

I’m currently developing a game, and the boss battle themes are still open/available.

I am paying attention to all the opinions and will review them one by one!

Recommendation request Recent jrpg's with great things to do once you get the airship for overworld exploration? Particularly talking about getting OP early like farming or colliseum end game fights once you get the airship.

I'm playing Final Fantasy Resonance and getting relatively near the end of the game. I love that once I got airship access in the game, the overworld completely opened up and I was doing things immediately like grinding on some end game island with cactuars that give hundreds of thousands of experience points then doing stuff like the optional coliseum fights that give extremely OP stuff as rewards for winning and/or buy from the arena vendor. You can do these things immediately but I don't like how in some jrpg's with airship overworlds that don't let you do anything until the very end of the game, while on the other hand FF Resonance lets you do pretty much everything right away at around the halfway point, which I appreciate.

Are there any recent jrpg's you guys can think of (recent like switch 1, 2, ps5, ect) that has very satisfying gameplay opportunities once you get access to the airship and can travel to optional islands with great stuff to grind or farm? I've played all the Octopath games and the recent dragon quest remakes like 7, 3, 1 and 2. I haven't played YSX proud nordics yet which I've been eyeing but not sure if it has what I'm asking in this topic, aka fun stuff to do once you get the airship and access to the entire world map pretty much.

After 22 years of remaining Japan only, the directors cut bonus content of the cult classic PlayStation 2 RPG Shadow Hearts Covenant is finally accessible in English. With this patcher, the US version now features the additional story content and upgrades, with English dub and Undub options, as well as the ability to convert the game from two single layer desks to one dual layer disc.
