So many recommendations recently seems to suggest ignoring story. Like Crystal Project is great but the story is meh or Final Fantasy Resonance is great but the story is meh.
What are your recommendations for stories you don't consider 'meh'? Bias towards more recent releases please. Stuff on PS5 or Switch 2 perhaps?
Mod says I need more characters so... people love talking about the themes of Expedition 33, people sometimes reference the bombing mission in Final Fantasy 7 when talking about environmental issues. What games have story beats that you think will be worth talking about in the future?

Ive always wanted to try a persona game, but the 100+ play time and supposedly poor pacing has always put me off. Having recently looked into metaphor, it seems like the most appealing by far out of the persona games. I really really like medieval set games, my favourite so far being ffxvi, I really liked the turn based combat of ffx and e33 (and even ifs the combat isn't great/ similar, im happy to overlook it for the following), so my only concern is how is the pacing and the story. One thing the latter 3 games had In common was an amazing story, now I wouldn't expect metaphor to have quite as good a story as those, but is it still really compelling? Are there strong and frequent story beats, set pieces and plot twists etc. This brings me to the pacing, is the story always moving forwards? Does the story always compile you to keep playing and find out what happens? All of this is to say, is the story good and is it the main focus of the game, and is it paced well? Thats all, Thanks

I saw a post a few days ago talking about some RPGs that are under the radar, and I bit on this game, I ended up staying up all night and playing it til 6am this morning. The battle and class system is robust, the platforming is so fun and clean, the rewards for exploration are high, and it seems like the put so much love into it. The story has been a little meh so far but im having a legit 9/10 experience right now and that usually doesn't happen with RPGs for me these days! Please give it a try!

Apologies if this was brought up in here before because I was looking at cases in gaming where a protagonist is so twisted said protagonist ends up being criticized for their edgy nature.
To help provide some examples of the use of the trope, some are Gig from Soul Nomad and Metallia from the Hundred Knight as I found them kind of interesting for how amoral they are as they will stop at nothing to get what they want as their goal is to conquer the world they live in.

Currently playing Fortune's Weave and love the story and actual game play but HATE the social sim part.
What are your favorite non 2D or 2.5D JRPGs without social aspects? (I've already played most of the 2D/2.5D ones).
Prefer turn based, but I can do live combat if not too difficult.
PS5 or Switch 2 platform.

I played nier replicant + automata recently and was really drawn in by the story and development of the characters. Currently looking for something similar, with a strong cast and thought provoking story. Preferably something playable on windows PC.
For reference I also like the trails, fire emblem, and final fantasy series

No changes to the actual game itself, just the name and that’s it. Asking for three main reasons: 1) Final Fantasy is no stranger to using the bones of a scrapped project to make a new numbered entry out of it. 2) The whole “phantoms of past characters” thing hasn’t stopped other longrunning RPG franchises from attempting a similar concept for a main installment and nobody questioning it. And 3) the game’s got plenty of FF hallmarks like the 3-tier magic system, crystals, some flavor of Cid, creatures like chocobos and moogles, limit breaks, a protagonist named after a weather pattern, and actual RPG elements like status effects, elemental weaknesses and affinities, gear and equipment, and a whole party of characters to control.

I live in the Uk and weather in autumn can get you a bit moody. I’m currently playing my first Pokemon game (ultra moon) and LBX Little Battlers experience and have a whole bunch of other lighter JRPGs I have as a backup if I can’t get into these. I was wondering, does anyone else plays their games like this? I remember when I was in high school and I played the first monster hunter and final fantasy x during spring/summer and had one of the best experiences with playing games.

Resonance came out last week and I keep seeing it compared to Octopath II, so now that people have had it in their hands, where do you land?
Octopath II has that gorgeous art and the campfire vibe. Resonance has the Final Fantasy name, the Visions summoning system, and cameos like Cloud and Tidus. Both are HD-2D turn-based, so it feels like a fair fight.
If you’ve played both, which one wins for you and why? If you’ve only played one so far, what’s your take?

Hey everyone,
I'm currently playing through Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of DANA and I am absolutely loving it. The storytelling is beautiful and the seamless overworld combat is incredibly fun. However, my biggest gripe by far is the map system—I frequently find it incredibly complicated, frustrating, and easy to get lost in.
I'm looking ahead to my next purchase once I finish this game. I want to jump into a true action-JRPG masterpiece that has phenomenal mechanics, rewarding exploration, a forgiving but engaging difficulty level similar to Ys VIII, and a vastly superior, modern map/navigation system.
Right now, I've narrowed my top choices down to Tales of Arise, Ys IX: Monstrum Nox, or Ys X: Nordics, but I have a couple of specific dilemmas:
The Combat Transition: I know both Ys IX and Ys X keep the seamless style I love, while Tales of Arise warps you into an enclosed arena for battles. For those who love seamless overworld combat, did Arise's screen transitions feel jarring or break your exploration immersion?
The Map Quality: How do the maps in Ys IX, Ys X, and Tales of Arise stack up against Ys VIII? I've heard Ys X has much better modern navigation tools, but I've also heard Ys IX can feel a bit dull and grey in its exploration.
Aside from those three, I am completely open to other masterpiece recommendations! If there is another modern action-JRPG out there with amazing real-time combat, an adjustable or accessible difficulty level, a gripping story, and a clear, user-friendly map, please throw it my way. (Note: I strictly prefer real-time action, so please no turn-based or brutal souls-like recommendations).
Would love to get your honest, unbiased feedback to help me make my final choice. Thanks!

So lately an idea I was interested in exploring was that I wanted to see how often the premise of RPGs about power that comes at a steep price was used.
Yes I know that BOF Dragon Quarter used such a premise about how morphing into a dragon ends up draining Ryu the more he uses it, but I became interested in seeing that particular concept used more often in the genre where the player can turn into a demon with super powers such as high stats, but doing so will have damage to the unit if they use the ability too often.

And after that, it was just addiction, like Final Fantasy, Chrono Trigger, Xenogears, and even the fan games made in RPG Maker.

Hey hey.
I only discovered the existence of this game today, and it goes for £8 at that.
The past 3 JRPGs ive played have been SMTV, Metaphor and currently playing through Persona 3 Reload. I need an Atlus break.
Is this game decent? It looks great, but a quick glance at review scores and it looks very mixed. So there must be some issues with it somewhere.
What do you guys think of it, and even as a Megaman noob, is it worth playing?

I originally picked up the collector's edition of FF7 Rebirth when it was released and I still have yet to complete it. I had to take multiple breaks because of all the extra content stuffed into this game and I totally lost count of how many breaks I have taken so far. I believe I am getting towards the end of the game where you have to follow the Turks up north to the temple but every turn I take there is another side quest mission. I also looked at the total time I played Rebirth and it is at almost 100 hours! How does a 30 hour game from 1997 turn into almost 100 hours for just the second part?
Anyone have advice on how to push through this last section? I totally lost the will power to get through so maybe I should just give it a rest? I remember FF7 on PS1 being very enjoyable so what has changed with this updated version of FF7?

I fought a mandatory enemy encounter and got the sparkling deck, I go to equip it and I realized it was a HUGE jump in defense. What I had on had me at 127 defense, what it gives is 572.
I'm curious if at some point I equipped early game armor by accident and sold all my good stuff, making things trickier than necessary or if this late game armor is just a huge stat boost.
I did this as a child playing Castlevania Circle of he moon where I didn't look at the numbers and just equipped what ever I thought red or blue might indicate. I realized later I played the whole game with starting equipment.
For Skies I didn't have much trouble either way, I thought it might be funny if the bosses were doing way more damage than they're supposed to!
Also if you've ever accidentally played a game like this feel free to share.

As the title says, I recently installed an emulator. Got Jean D'Arc and Valkyrie Profile. Feel free to suggest more good titles or any jrpgs you want. I skipped the whole PsP era which is something that makes me sad but I'm trynna make up for it. Bonus if the title is 20 or less hours. Thanks in advance.
