Sightseeing & Activities Authorized ticket/access websites for most IT attractions MEGATHREAD (will be stickied soon)

The Mods need your help please!!! Of all the questions posted in this sub, the majority center around tickets and ticketing. There are many websites/apps/online content that purport to be the "authorized" site to sell tickets to all the main IT attractions: obviously they aren't so we are compiling a list (see below- if a particular city/town is missing please let the Mods know) of all the correct, legal and authorized websites for tickets/ticketing/access. Please contact the Mods via Modmail and send links to the authorized sites ONLY and we will incorporate them into this post. Thank you from the Mods and your fellow travelers: this should save everyone a lot of time in the future.

Please don't use this post to ask questions about <attraction/site/ticket/whatever> here, use the sub for that.

CAVEAT EMPTOR applies to any and all 3rd party ticket vendors. Remember: only buy tickets from the authorized site(s) that you want to visit. Ticket resellers buy bulk tickets and then hike their prices. You will have no protection from cancellations, ticket problems and anything else with 3rd parties. If there are no tickets available for your date then you can either try to visit the location and get a ticket that day or run the risk of buying 3rd party tickets. If you must purchase 3rd party tickets then use a credit card that you can charge back if there are problems. Again: CAVEAT EMPTOR (buyer beware). The same thing applies to all online 3rd party hotel/transportation/misc sites as well.

EES +ETIAS + FCO AIRPORT INFORMATION

Lots and lots of posts about the new EES system for the EU. All your answers are here:

https://travel-europe.europa.eu/ees

Also coming in Q4 2026 is the ETIAS: https://travel-europe.europa.eu/etias so be prepared for that as well.

But please: no more questions about how long it will take to submit your biometric data at <XXX> airport for EES. It will take as long as it needs or has to. It could be less than 5 mins at a smaller airport that's fully staffed or it could take over an hour (and maybe a LOT more) at a large airport that only has 1 booth open. It could be easy at 7am and impossible at 10am the same day- no one knows.

Exiting should take less time as (theoretically) everyone leaving the EU will already have their EES data stored. But sometime the eGates just don't work properly or 6 gates are down for some reason or you have angry airport staff yelling at people and sending them to the wrong lines...just because they're annoyed (looking at you FCO).

If it's your 1st time with EES, then add at least an hour to your scheduled arrival time to clear EES and that should be fine. If it takes less time then you're good. More? At least you planned this delay in advance!!!

FCO AIRPORT UPDATE FROM LATE 2026: work has begun at FCO to tear down the elevated train tracks that connect(ed) T3 to the outlying E31-E44 gates. You now have to walk quite a long ways from the Duty Free area past temporary gates and structures to a bus pickup point. As most US flights depart from these remote gates and all tend to be leaving around the same time, the lines can get very very long. You should budget AT LEAST 30+ minutes of wait & travel time to get from T3 to your gate via the bus. This construction will last until March 2027 (so they say, the actual date may be far longer as ADR works always take far far longer than planned). Details here: https://www.adr.it/web/aeroporti-di-roma-en/infrastructure-works

TRAIN TRANSPORTATION & INFORMATION

\*LIVE TRAIN ARRIVALS/DEPARTURES BOARD*\** Use the link below to check live arrivals/departures info from a specific station, handy for checking platforms as well as delays/other info:

https://www.rfi.it/en/stations/station-page/quality-services/Public-information/Live-departures-Arrivals-Monitor.html

There are 2 main companies that operate trains in IT- Italo (only high speed trains between major cities) and Trenitalia (both high speed & regional/local trains). There are other regional train companies that operate in specific areas, that info is below.

Schedules: train schedules are sometimes released late- if you are looking for a particular train months in advance and you see nothing listed you're probably way too early to be be booking tickets. Try again a few weeks later. Generally tickets get released 2 to 3 months out.

Buying train tickets from 3rd party sites comes with the potential for problems including: no refunds, bad info and misleading fares. Only buy tickets from the approved companies and you won't have any issues. Using 3rd party sites to determine a route is fine- just take that info to the correct website and purchase your tickets there.

Train strikes: these happen often and are announced well in advance (normally!). Here is the main site that can assist you with determining the impact of strikes and which trains will be affected: https://scioperi.mit.gov.it/mit2/public/scioperi (site is in Italian) and here's another one BUT this requires a VPN set to IT to work: https://www.cgsse.it/calendario-scioperi

Validations: tickets purchased online or via the app(s) will automatically validate at the departure time of the scheduled train and can be used only for that train if it was automatically validated. If you want to change train you must do so before the automatic validation (thus before the departure of the original train). Get to any train station and make the change in person at a ticket window if the app isn't working properly.

MOBILITY ASSISTANCE for trains: from u/Jacopo86, this link provides helpful information about mobility assistance: https://www.rfi.it/en/for-persons-with-disability/information-about-the-assistance-of-the-sala-blu-in-one-click.html

Roma & Vaticano

» Colosseum: https://ticketing.colosseo.it/en/

Some top info from u/anonbutler about the Colosseum Night tour tickets: "These tickets are limited and highly sought after, so here’s a breakdown of exactly how to score them. Ticket availability opens exactly 7 days and 12 hours before the scheduled tour time. For example: If you want the 8:30 PM tour on July 29, you need to be online and ready at 8:30 AM (Rome time) on July 22. These tours are offered only on Tuesdays & Thursdays and Includes access to the Colosseum underground. Booking link: use this direct URL with the desired tour date built in (replace the XX-XX dates as needed): https://ticketing.colosseo.it/en/eventi/una-notte-al-colosseo/?t=2025-XX-XX. Start refreshing a few minutes before the drop time. There are 7 time slots between 8:15 PM and 10:30 PM, released every 15–30 minutes. Be fast — it’s a bit of a mad dash. I practiced the booking process multiple times before the real date just to make sure I am prepared when I really needed the tickets. After a few failed attempts, I finally snagged tickets for the 8:45 PM slot. If you miss out the first time, don’t give up — keep trying! Slots open gradually after 15-30 minutes."

Additional Colosseum Notes May 2026 from u/mirr0rrim: in an effort to stop scalping bots from taking all the public tickets, forcing you to hire a third party tour guide, these unapproved tour companies are intermittently being denied access to the Colosseum. This is NOT about tour companies lying saying they have tickets for you but at the last minute cancelling because they couldn't buy any. This is about the Colosseum only allowing third party tour guides' tickets to be used if they are on an approved list. List here:

https://colosseo.it/en/2026/01/list-of-accredited-partners-april-2026/

Because this enforcement is so new, there are mixed results. If you get lucky and the Colosseum employee is feeling generous, you'll still get in (just without your guide). However others have not been so lucky and they were denied entrance and had to get in line to buy new tickets. If you buy on location, you will NOT get to buy underground, attic, or arena tickets. Just general access. Some tour companies are warning a week in advance, others 1 day, and even worse some say nothing til you show up. Highly recommend checking this list or contacting your tour guide. If you don't see your guide, they might still be approved, it's just their parent company is listed and they fall under that umbrella.

Itinerary !!MUST PROVIDE TRAVEL DATES!! First trip to Italy with my daughter (19) : does this itinerary look realistic?

Hi everyone! My daughter and I are heading to Italy next spring. I'm mostly healthy, but I have a health condition that means I can't be on my feet a lot and need to be mindful not to overexert myself. I also get motion sick on longer rides (but can take medicine if need be… just don’t want to take it every day. We’re planning one main activity a day with downtime to rest, and we'd rather have unique experiences than rush between tourist traps.

Dates: Leaving Sunday night, May 23, landing in Rome Monday morning, flying home from Naples Friday, June 4.

Rome (3 nights)
Mon 5/24: Arrive and rest
Tue 5/25: Early-morning Vatican tour (still deciding on this one, might swap for a food tour)
Wed 5/26: Golf cart tour in the morning, Colosseum night tour

Florence (3 nights)
Thu 5/27: High-speed train to Florence, afternoon shopping
Fri 5/28: Perfume-making class + maybe timed entry to see David at the Accademia
Sat 5/29: Half-day trip to the Tuscan countryside to see the rolling hills
Sorrento (5 nights)
Sun 5/30: Train to Naples, car to Sorrento
Mon 5/31: Beach day
Tue 6/1: Capri by the larger ferry (not an all-day small-boat tour)
Wed 6/2: Pizza-making class
Thu 6/3: Free day for shopping
Fri 6/4: Fly home from Naples
Questions:
Does this pacing seem realistic, or is anything more physically demanding than it looks?
Vatican tour or food tour in Rome? Which would you pick?
Any tips for Capri?
Any recommendations for easy, low-walking Tuscany half-day trips from Florence?
Anything we'd regret missing that fits this pace?
Thanks so much in advance!

Trip Report Random inspection at airport gate question.

Hi all.

I just flew out of FCO back to the US a few days back. At the gate, I was chosen for an additional random inspection. This is the 4th time I've flown out of FCO and the 4th time I've been selected for the supposedly random additional search. This time, they at least didn't make me completely empty my bags and let my wife and kids stay a few yards from me (they made her board the airplane in the past).

Is this actually random? Or, am I triggering something? I have Italian ancestry and my surname is a pretty common Southern Italian name. Is there something to that?

Overall, I don't really care. It's mostly just a mild nuisance. I'm more curious at this point because 4/4 seems quite the odds.

Itinerary !!MUST PROVIDE TRAVEL DATES!! Dolomites with an elderly person

Hello

I would like to take a trip to the Dolomites in May or June, and I'd like to take my elderly mom with me. As she's over 70 and with some health issues, we can't do any crazy hikes or anything too demanding. Our trip would probably start from either Venice or Milano.

I'm wondering, do you have any suggestions how to best experience the Dolomites with an elderly person? Are there some locations where we could take a gondola or a funicular up for some views and some easier (rather flat) walking routes? Due to health issues it's also important that bathrooms wouldn't be too far.

In one post someone suggested Ortisei or Siusi/Fiè to Alpe di Siusi. Would that make sense? Does it have sufficient infrastructure?

If it's not possible then I will probably just stick with Lake Garda area or something less demanding.

Transportation FCO Airport ALERT- FYI increased travel time to Gates E31-E44 (Remote Gates) until March 2027

The Mods have also pinned this info in the sticky post at the top of the sub about tickets. If you haven't read that post yet we suggest you do so to review all the new info: https://www.reddit.com/r/ItalyTravel/comments/1icygbo/authorized_ticketaccess_websites_for_most_it/

FCO AIRPORT UPDATE FROM LATE 2026: work has begun at FCO to tear down the elevated train tracks that connect(ed) T3 to the outlying E31-E44 remote gates. You now have to walk quite a long way from the T3 Duty Free area past temporary gates & structures to a lower level bus pickup point. As most US flights depart from the above remote gates & all tend to be leaving around the same time (early to late AM), the bus wait lines can get very very long.

There are limited services at the remote gates with only 1 semi-decent place to grab something to eat/drink- please don't get the disgusting pizza they have there it's an abomination: the sandwiches are just OK & yes the grumpy ladies serving coffee have always been that way. There are no lounges either as they're closed. Do your shopping at T3 and grab what you need there.

Sightseeing & Activities !!MUST PROVIDE TRAVEL DATES!! Are these genuine Borghese Gallery tickets and did I buy the right one?

I bought two tickets for November 1 on this website

https://www.tosc.it/event/galleria-borghese-galleria-borghese-22159566/

It only gave me the option of 4 euros each (2 booking fee + 2 service fee)

Is it because it falls on the free sunday date? Thank you for answering!

Transportation Rome to Venice train

Hello,

I'm traveling to Italy soon and need some advice.

Our plane lands in Rome at 12:20 pm on Sunday December 20th and I'm planning on buying the 2:30 pm high speed train to Venice.

My questions are the following:

Is 2 hrs enough time to clear customs and take the express to Rome Train station and then the High Speed train to Venice? No baggage claim, carry on only.

Should I wait to buy the train tickets at the station instead?

Any advise from Locals and frequent travelers is greatly appreciated.

Transportation Looking for Bus transport info between Sorrento and Positano mid-November

I'll need a bus from Sorrento to Positano and back on November 12. I'm looking at the SITA website but I just do not understand the schedule they have published.

I'm also trying to use Unic Campania app, but it shows nothing available at that day and time. I think I don't know which stations to select in Sorrento and/or Positano. I've read the only SITA bus stop in Positano is Sponda, but that doesn't seem to be working either.

I've also read that ferries don't run reliably in mid-November because of the weather.

Any ideas? I know this question has been posted in the past, but not specifically for November 2026 and I have read that the schedule changes November 1. Quite confused.

Thank you!!

Transportation Day trip to Frigento...

This will be my first trip to Italy (Europe in general for that matter), and I am trying to make a day trip from Naples to Frigento. My Poppi grew up in Frigento until he came to America at 21 years old. I would love more than anything to go see the town he grew up in.

Should I rent a car for a day trip there and back? Would it be easier to do public transportation from the city to the country?

Any ideas/support/guidance is highly appreciate! Grazie!!

Transportation Traveling from Florence to Rome on October 30th.

We have a train booked currently from Florence to Rome. However, we are aware of the general strike happing that day. What would be a good backup option for transportation? We looked at flixbus but that may also be striking?

Sorry if this is stupid we are first time travelers.

Itinerary !!MUST PROVIDE TRAVEL DATES!! Anyone have any advice for trying to get a same day ticket to enter the colosseum?

Trying to get it for today, October 26th, there was last minute changes to our itinerary and if we could somehow make do the colosseum today it would work out perfectly. Anyone have any advice? Is it even possible? Everywhere I’ve seen online is either sold out or charging $2000. (Not kidding)

Itinerary !!MUST PROVIDE TRAVEL DATES!! Upcoming Strike and Train Travel

Have a Trenitalia ticket for train #9405 from Venice to Rome on October 30th. I am aware of the strike and I see it is on the list of trains at https://www.trenitalia.com/it/informazioni/treni-garantiti-incasodisciopero.html

I know technically anything can happen, but does this mean my train will still run? If so, are buses participating in the general strike and getting a bus would be a good backup? If all buses are participating as well, what should I do? I really appreciate everyone's help since I'm not familiar with this!

I'm ok with leaving Venice a day early, as frustrating as that would be. I just want to make sure that's the necessary thing to do before I act!

Transportation Is this enough time to make train?

Hello, our flight to Rome from the US lands at 9:35 AM. I am looking to book a 12:50 PM train to Venice. Will this be enough time to make it through customs and to the Leonardo Express to Roma Termini? We do not plan to check luggage, we will be taking carry ons. Thank you!

Accommodation !!MUST PROVIDE TRAVEL DATES!! Which area of Naples to stay for 2-days for ease of travel to and from Pompeii with public transport?

Ciao tutti.

Heading to Italy fairly soon and want to see if I can get some tips. Part of our trip is heading to Pompeii from Rome for a two-day portion. Understanding that a base in Naples is ideal/required - what part of Naples would people suggest for ease of transport to and from Stazione Centrale?

I suppose what I mean would be ease of taking a local train in, or ease of getting a taxi et. al. We were looking at the Chiaia area, and while it seems nice I feel like it would be a bit too much to be traveling to-and-from in such a short stay.

Dates would be 11/28-11/30, so yeah, a bit short notice.

Itinerary !!MUST PROVIDE TRAVEL DATES!! Lake Garda w/ 4.5 yo

We will be staying in Lucca for 3 weeks with a 4.5 yo, and then I have a week+ to account for for the end of our trip where we need to head towards a main airport hub (Rome or Venice). I was looking at Lake Garda on our way from Tuscany to Venice potentially, but see mixed reviews with toddlers. We’ll be there the middle of May, so lake activities won’t be an option. My child is more of an outdoors/ biking kiddo but still on the younger side. Thoughts or suggestions?

Transportation Was this taxi trying to overcharge me? What happened?

I got off the cruise terminal in Salerno. There’s a sign for a taxi. There seemed to only be a couple taxi drivers coming back and forth. I think most people just walk or find alternative transportation.

We were going to the Concordia pier to catch a ferry. When a taxi pulled up, I asked what the fare would be there and he said 20 euros. I kind of questioned the price by the look I gave to my girlfriend. At that point, he was out of the taxi. He then said wait 5 minutes a couple of times to me. I was a little confused. I thought he was saying that he was going to sit there for 5 mins. He then engaged the couple behind us. They were the only other people in the queue and they agreed to the 20 euros.

He must have either meant for me to wait 5 min for the next taxi, or he was going to drop the other couple off and be back in 5 minutes. I think it was the former.

My research suggests there aren’t flat fees for this route, but he was not doing metered only flat and refused to give me a ride.

We ended up walking and it was shorter than I thought.

There’s no rideshare here and freenow always shows unavailable. I don’t like to negotiate price on the side of the road. I’m going to Rome next and have to take a few short trips. I here that these aren’t worth it for the drivers. What do I do next time? Do I just not ask the fare and ask them to turn on the meter? Are they allowed to say no to meter, or can you get ripped off by meter?

Sightseeing & Activities !!MUST PROVIDE TRAVEL DATES!! Is Mount Baldo still accessible in November, whether hiking or via public transport when the cable car shuts down for the season?

Im heading to lake garda for 2-3 days in november and the Funivia Malcesine to Monte Baldo will be closed while I'm there. For those experienced with the area, are there any ways to still ascend it whether assisted via public transport or specific hiking trails that arent too crazy

---
Additional details just in case:

- We are used to walking 20,000-30,000 steps a day - we live in Japan and are very active so a lot of walking for several hours is no problem

- We're going on this trip for the first time, as our honeymoon if that matters

- I am particularly interested in knowing if the hotel I booked for Rome is good or if the surrounding area is good, or if we should move somewhere.

- Also, should we spend 6 nights in the same place?

- For the New Years Eve - if you could pls recommend a good place to spend it on, would love something lively of course if possible!

- We love historical places, we love the arts, and we love trying all sort of food; we also love nature, and we absolutely love drinking after dinner ahah

Thank you so much!

Accommodation !!MUST PROVIDE TRAVEL DATES!! Trip to Bari 1-3.11

Hey all. I have planned trip with my wife to Bari on 1.11 to 3.11, but now all we hear is about transportation protests, lack of supplies in shops and closing restaurants.
Is it still worth to travel in such circumstances or should we cancel it?
Will we really have such a problem to get transport from airport or find something to eat??
