r/iPod and r/iPodClassic Guidelines for Sellers, Product Reviews, and Customer Support

Version 1.0.0, released 2026-08-25

The following guidelines are in place to ensure that r/iPod and r/iPodClassic remain a safe and fair place for discussing iPods and iPod modding, as well as to protect sellers and buyers. These rules will come into effect on the 25th August 2026 and apply to all posts made on or after that date.

1. Separation of Business and Moderation

For the sake of fairness and neutrality, moderators of r/iPod and r/iPodClassic may not operate their own for-profit businesses selling devices, device parts/accessories, or offering repair/modding services. Conversely, users who own or are employed by for-profit businesses selling devices, device parts/accessories, or offering repair/modding services are not eligible to apply to be a moderator of r/iPod and r/iPodClassic.

2. Advertising

Advertisement posts for the sales of goods or services are not permitted on r/iPod or r/iPodClassic, this applies to both businesses as well as private sales. We want these places to be about discussing owning, using, or modding iPods however this is not free real estate to advertise your store. If you wish to advertise on Reddit in general, you must enrol through Reddit's advertiser program. Please note this is not the same as post boosting, if you sign up for paid post boosting this does not make you eligible to ignore this rule even if the post is tagged as a "Brand Affiliate". Reddit ads are not the same as Reddit posts.

Posts by sellers advertising their goods or services will be deleted, and repeat offences will result in a ban. Using alt accounts to recommend your store while acting as a third party is also prohibited and will result in post deletion and a ban.

There are other subreddits that permit the advertising of device sales, such as:

r/AppleSwap

r/HardwareSwap

3. iPod Vendors List

While advertising posts are not permitted, our community features a pinned FAQ with a list of verified vendors. Reputable sellers may apply to be added to this list. In order to be eligible, your store must have a valid warranty and returns policy, as well as contact details for customer support. To apply, please send a modmail.

4. Product Reviews

Product review posts are permitted, however you are strictly required to disclose whether you purchased the goods or services yourself or if they were provided by the vendor for review purposes. If you are affiliated with the vendor, you are also required to disclose this. Reviews with undisclosed affiliations with vendors will be deleted.

Reviews must be made in good faith and reflect your personal opinions, vendors must not influence the contents of your review. If a review is found to be made in bad faith (either by a vendor influencing the reviewer for a dishonest positive review for them or a negative review of competitors), it will be deleted and repeat offences will result in a ban.

Vendors may not use alt accounts to post reviews of their own stores or of competitors while posing as a third party, anyone found doing so will have their posts removed and may be blacklisted from the verified vendor list.

Vendors also may not request the removal of legitimate negative reviews. A legitimate review should describe personal experiences of the purchasing process or the goods/services, but cannot contain personal grievances or targeted attacks. Reviews must not contain any AI-generated content. Reviews will only be removed if they contain content that breaks the subreddit rules or false claims, however legitimate negative reviews will remain to help buyers make informed purchasing choices. Vendors who abuse the reporting tool in an attempt to remove legitimate reviews may be blacklisted from the verified vendor list.

5. Customer Support

r/iPod and r/iPodClassic are discussion forums, we are not direct representatives of vendors and cannot provide customer support. Posts enquiring about specific orders will be locked and we will provide contact details for the relevant vendor. In general, while these posts will be locked they will not be deleted as they may provide useful information about buying experiences from vendors that may help others make informed buying choices. The two exceptions to this are if the posts contain personally identifiable information or if they devolve into unnecessary drama, in which case the post will be deleted.

I’ve acquired a few more classic iPods over the past months which I’ve slowly been restoring.

It’s been fun learning about the quirks of each generation such as the FireWire syncing on the Gen2.

I’ve added flash storage to a few but kept the stock HDD in many of them to retain the original experience and feel.

Having a size limitation means you need to be more deliberate about what songs/albums you want to add which to me is part of the experience.

I’m also using a 2007 Mac Mini running Snow Leopard as a dedicated manager for syncing and charging. Makes it much easier and stabler than modern macOS.

I have been getting back into my retro, nerdy tech hobbies, and just found my old 2008 iPod classic. I didn’t realize that people were retrofitting these to be used in modern day and really like the idea of possibly doing that to this. Any ideas on what the first good steps are? What are considered “tasteful” updates/upgrades and what aren’t. Thanks for any help.

Trouble shooting a “broken” 7th gen

Post image
16 Upvotes

Took a risk buying a broken 7th gen that could not get past the Apple logo.

iPod - i tried all the usual … force start, disc mode, diagnostic mode (i got in 1 time) but could not get far with the HD not working

Computer - nothing on iTunes, sometimes it turned up as an usb drive but was not able to format or anything.

Solution - after changing the HD to one i had lying around it worked like a charm :)!

Even though i have my flash mod and battery on the way i could not wait to open it up and get it to work to see if i didn’t buy a dead iPod.

Hope this can help someone in the future, take a risk sometime!

I’m trying to figure out if the reading is bad and the hard drive is dying. I need to transfer the music into iTunes before that happens.

rewind button on 7th gen - troubleshooting

Hello everyone,

The rewind click button on my 7th gen iPod classic has stopped working. (Despite only ever having been temperamental at best..)

I have opened up the iPod and tried the obvious - cleaning up around the button & even lifted tape affixing the click mechanism and cleaned under the contact (which looked clean tbf) - it is still not working!

Would love to know if there is something I am missing here or any bright spark here has any other suggestions before I put it back together and spend the rest of my life trying not to think about it.

Thanks in advance.

Question Database Size Question

Greetings iPod fans! I have a question about the on-device iTunes database. I have (original) 80 GB 5th generation (aka 5.5 generation) iPod, which I have flash modded with 512 GB storage. This iPod has 64 MB of RAM, but my iTunes database is 74 MB. I understand that the iPod reads the database into RAM at startup, but obviously the database is larger than the available RAM. I haven’t noticed any issues using the iPod, so I’m curious, what symptoms do people experience when the database is too large to fit in the RAM?

AI-Generated Content Teaser: 3D Rendering Engine via BCM2722 - iPod Video 5G/5.5G

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

What this is:

A fully, device side 3d rendering, done in real time over the BCM2722 chip on a flash modded video.

AI Disclaimer

The video was taken by me, and not generated via AI.

What was generated by AI was:

- The documentation I relied on

- Some of the lines of code that went into this example (code-completion)

- much of the test-bench done locally prior to putting it on device.

- Much of the simulator code, which got updated as more was learned about the hardware and software layout needed to accomplish this

- Some of the drawn assets within the test video. I did do some of the basic geometry, but I'm not a 3d artist, and I'm not adept at converting things into C-code, or vectorized triangles for the graphics module.

Device Specs:

German-region iPod Video 5.5G (64MB version)

iFlash Quad mod with 1TB of flash storage

3000mah mod

Haptic Feedback Mod

USB-C Mod

(Purchased from PlayerMods -- I am not endorsing nor sponsored by them, though I've enjoyed the device just fine)

Custom RockBox OS (See Context and Anticipated Questions)

Context

This is part of a much larger project, but I thought everyone here might find this nifty.

In my work on reverse engineering the PP5022 and BCM2722 for my main project, I decided to speed up testing features of the BCM2722 (the dedicated video chip on the iPod Video models) by creating a 3D rendering engine.

The video here is an example of my test run. The menu displayed is part of my developer menus on the backend of my build. The backend is a heavily modified version of RockBox, but I won't go into detail here about how much I've modified it, as I plan to release a GitHub repo shortly that will be more interesting to talk about.

Anticipated Questions

How was this done?

After examining publicly posted spec sheets, the results of some black-box, clean room style testing of the Apple-built display drivers on my device, and some general knowledge of hardware and C design, I figured that it would be possible to deploy a 3d graphics engine for the iPod Video that would run at natively comfortable speeds.

What do you plan to do with it?

Not entirely sure. I mean, much of what I learned will be useful in implementing what I'm calling 'Album Flow' on my firmware (Cover Flow-like view). I am also thinking of releasing, for the same Firmware, when available publicly, Game SDKs, including an example Game that uses the 3D rendering engine done here.

When can we see it ourselves?

I don't know exact dates, and I don't want to get anyone's hopes up for specific timelines, but the engine, documentation for the three chips inside the iPod Video, and of course, the base firmware that was able to run this demo, are all a part of the release plan for my upcoming project.

What makes this interesting?

Well, importantly, none of that rendering was done CPU side. Obviously there was some DMA/disk IO stuff going on in the background on a CPU thread, but the actual drawing of the images was done all on the GPU (VideoCore II, BCM2722). The chip itself is vastly more efficient than the CPU, and, more importantly, can be turned entirely off at the hardware level.

This means that, if you want to render things, such as Cover Flow, UIs, etc etc, you can do most of that processing via the BCM2722, and when the screen is off or not being updated, you can either have that chip idle or entirely shut off.

Currently, RockBox uses a pass-through method that generates most frames on CPU and sends commands of WHAT to draw to the BCM2722. In this case, the BCM2722 is driving the visuals and calculating what to draw, and drawing it itself.

Finally

If you have any other questions, comments, or hopes for what insight my project might be able to provide, let me know. I posted this to show people what the iPod Video can do, with the general feeling that, while some of it has been publicly explored, not enough has been shared.

My hope is that my ultimate project gets a larger discussion started of how to use our old hardware, and especially these lovely devices in particular, to their fullest capacity.

Question Which battery?

Just a quick question since some options are limited at the moment; but what is the difference in hourly usage between a 3000 mAh and the 3800 mAh battery? If it’s not that much, should I just get the 3000?

Also, what is the size difference?

I ask because I need to start my iPod build for my girlfriend before Christmas comes, been sitting on her pod for about a month now.

TIA!

Edit: sorry I forgot to add that I have both the 5.5 and the 7 gen iPods. My main concern right now is modding the thin-backed 7th gen

Hi! A question for the experts: how can I identify an original item and determine its value? Thanks to everyone for the tip. I checked the device; all the serial numbers match. The runtime is 27 hours, and the battery is at 4185 mV.
